Please send all articles, columns, and announcements
for the Currents to [email protected].
Late articles will not appear in the next issue.

We are excited to announce that after several
months of hard work, we have launched our new VYC
website! We think you will find it to be informative,
comprehensive, and easy to navigate. So, log on to
www.veniceyachtclub.com and poke around.
There is one rather significant change, and that is
how you now access the member’s side. As there is
sensitive member information located in that area, we
have added a layer of security. Please read through
the instructions below.
1)At the top right of the menu, on all the Public
Pages, there is a menu item named "Members"
with a down arrow tic mark immediately next
to the text. Click there and the login panel will
appear.
2)Enter your USERNAME and PASSWORD. Your
USERNAME is: first name_last name_member
ID#.
Example: Joe Smith would appear as
joe_smith_1750. Please note that the underscore
symbol between segments is necessary.
3)Everyone has the same PASSWORD for the
launch of the website, venice_yacht_club, all
lower case, no caps, no special characters except
for the underscore symbol between words.
4)Failure to enter a correct set of credentials will
cause the website to issue an error message. You
can hit the "Browser Back Button" and try again.
If a failure happens more than once, you might be
doing something wrong such as using the CAPS
key, etc.
5)Once a login is successful, you are taken to
a landing page where you will be offered the
ability to modify your Member Profile data and
to change your password to whatever you want.

Commodore’s Comments
Happy 4th of July everyone! This
is a very busy time of the year. There
are many things going on from the
entertainment to the activities.
Please check the Currents to keep
informed on what’s going on in July.
On July 14, the VYCCF is hosting an
event called Jazz Under the Stars to
increase awareness of their signature
project, Feed the Hunger - Feed the Mind, that is focused
on childhood hunger and literacy in our community. The
band All that Jazz will perform that evening. If you’re
interested in sponsoring or donating to the event, please
contact P/C Melinda Short or me. Thank you.
The Finance Committee, chaired by John Winger, did
an outstanding job in developing the budget for 20162017. They were able to meet the future financial needs
of the VYC without raising member dues. As a result
of their efforts, I am pleased to report that the Board of
Manager’s Column
First off, I would like to thank
everyone that came out to the Club
over the Memorial Day weekend. We
had a terrific turnout and everyone
seemed to have a great time. Even the
weather cooperated. The memorial
service on Sunday was beautifully
done. One of my favorite activities
was the kids' fishing tournament on
Saturday morning. As always, the kids had a great time
and even caught a few fish.
Each month, I receive an electronic version of the
Currents once it is completed. In May, I decided to send
it out to you so you could get a jump on planning for
the June activities. I figured why not. Well, I received
numerous positive comments about it, so I will continue
to do so. This is not intended as a replacement for the
paper version you receive each month.
By the time you receive this, we will have introduced
new glassware at the bar. It really was time to replace the
rather tired pattern we had been using for years. A big
thanks to the House Committee for the work they did on
this project.
As a reminder... somewhere hidden in each issue of
the Currents is one member’s membership number. If
the member finds it, there’s a complimentary bottle of
wine waiting for the member to enjoy while dining at
the Club. Also, I know many of you will be traveling this
July 2016
Directors unanimously approved the new budget. Thank
you to all involved!
You may have noticed that the VYC webpage looks
a little different. I am happy to announce that the first
of two releases of the new website took place in June.
Many of the enhancements are on the member’s side of
the website. Each member has his/her own credentials
to access the site. Once you enter the member side, you
can update your profile and password. Please contact the
General Manager or his staff if you need assistance. There
is also new imagery that displays our beautiful Club.
Getting involved at VYC is a great way to meet other
members and take ownership in your Club. If you are
interested in getting involved in any of the numerous
committees at the VYC, please feel free to email me.
Looking forward to seeing you at your Club!

summer. Remember to take your VYC burgee along in
your suitcase. You will need it so you can snap a photo
of you and it for the “Where in the World is the VYC
Burgee” contest. Please email it to me directly (gm@
veniceyachtclub.com).
We encourage you to bring your boat to the Club, tie
up, have lunch, or just kick back and relax. However,
all of the slips in our marina are permanently assigned
to other members. So, it is important that when coming
into the marina, you notify the Dockmaster on duty at the
time, preferably by contacting him on your radio as you
are approaching the docks. He will be happy to assist you
in finding an appropriate dock space and in tying up.
Finally, my most favorite holiday of the year is coming
up... the Fourth of July. A big day is planned with lots
of fun activities. We always have a huge turnout and I
suspect this year will be no different. It would help the
staff be better prepared if you would please take a minute
and call ahead with your reservations. We just want to be
ready when you arrive.
Fair winds and following seas.
Jerry Clemens, Club Manager
The Club will be closed
Tuesday, July 5.

VENICE YACHT CLUB CURRENTS
Chef’s Corner
In the U.S., July is National
Watermelon Month because
a cool, refreshing slice of
watermelon is the epitome of
summer, plus the watermelon
harvest peaks this month.
You may think you know
everything there is to know about
this summertime fruit, but allow
me to surprise you. Watermelon
is more than just delicious, it’s a
super healthy addition to your diet (in moderation,
of course).
Six watermelon facts that might surprise you:
1.Watermelon has more Lycopene than raw
tomatoes. Lycopene is a powerful carotenoid
antioxidant that gives fruits and vegetables a
pink or red color.
2. Watermelon juice may relieve muscle soreness.
Fresh watermelon juice has Amino Acid which
can help protect against muscle pain.
3. Watermelon is a fruit and a vegetable.
4. You can eat watermelon rind and seeds.
5. Watermelon is more than 91 percent water.
Hydration, here we come (it’s not a substitute
for drinking plenty of fresh water, however).
6.Some watermelon is yellow. The Yellow
Crimson watermelon has yellow flesh with a
sweeter, honey flavor in contrast to the more
pink fleshed Crimson Sweet.
So, come by the Club this month and look for
menu items with watermelon and take advantage of
this low-calorie (about 46 calories in a cup), nutrientpacked summer fruit.
Bon appétit!
Chef Josh

Featured Wines of the Month
2014 Sofia Rosé
Sofia Rosé flaunts a beautiful perfume of red
cherries, wild berries, and a distinct floral
note reminiscent of hyacinth. Its vibrant
palate is silky and ripe, with juicy flavors
of plums, pomegranate, and raspberries
layered with spice notes of cloves, tea
leaves, bergamot and orange peel.
2013 Murex
The Imperial Red Blend
The wine’s color is dark purple and inky,
while the nose shows dark berries, earth, and
light oak. The palate displays a rich mouth
feel with dark cherry fruit, earthy core, and
a long medium dry finish, featuring well
balanced vanilla tannins.

Message from the Fleet Captain Sail
I am pleased to report on the progress of SV Joy, our
Club’s 33’ sloop. Joy is afloat and raring to go! We now
have 11 couples in the Joy Sailing Club, nine current and
two more signing up upon their return to Florida in the fall.
While Joy is used mainly for pleasant day sails, after a rig
tune up and repair by members last month, Joy has been
racing in the Venice Sailing Squadron series on the Gulf
with renewed speed and improved handling characteristics.
She won third place in the Club’s recent Shark's Tooth
Cup. Since being donated to the Club in 2008, Joy has
been kept in Bristol condition and is an important resource
for members who once owned a sailboat, always wanted
to sail a boat, or otherwise broke out in a:
Sea Fever
I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the
sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white
sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running
tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls
crying.
I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like
a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's
over.
~ John Masefield
Your Fleet Captain-Sail broke out in a fever last month
and it wasn’t Sea Fever - it was Fuel Fever. During a day
sail on the Gulf, SV Fruition’s engine sputtered to a stop.
Two days prior we had changed the oil and all filters so I
was not concerned; some dirt must have gotten in the fuel
line. While I do not have a fuel gauge, it was certainly not
an empty fuel tank: I had computed 17 gallons remaining
in the 38 gallon tank and distinctly remembered just
having filled her up back in 2012! We kept checking fuel
lines, filters, fuel pump, etc., etc. One pesky crewmember
kept questioning my fuel usage computations which have
always been accurate for over 32 years. I was absolutely,
positively convinced we were not out of fuel. Well, we
were out of fuel! How embarrassing.
As a member of BoatUS, Fruition is entitled to free
towing service, of which we availed ourselves. Another
Club sailboat (who shall remain nameless but whose
initials are Carpe Diem) also ran into engine problems at
the same time in the same place and she had to wait in
line while Fruition was towed to the fuel dock. What a
July 2016
coincidence. Good thing we didn’t bang into each other
out there.
The official report on the incident is that Fruition had a
fuel injector whose spring got stuck, but by filling the tank
the fresh fuel cleaned it out and the engine started running
just fine. That’s my story and I am sticking with it!

Message from the Fleet Captain Power
Now that we are into the month of July it is time to
make sure we are ready for the summer hurricane season.
The hurricane plan for the marina has been updated for
the new season, and each of us should do the same for
our individual vessels no matter where they are berthed.
One of the most important items in your plan should be
the availability and fitting of the proper size and number
of dock lines. Lines need to be doubled and secured to
pilings if possible to prevent damage from the high winds
we can experience even if it is not a “named storm.” To
get a complete plan in place, see the Dockmaster for a
suggested plan or download one from boatus.com.
I hope you had a chance to enjoy some of the activities
at the Club over the Memorial Day weekend. The staff
and a number of volunteers did a terrific job over the
three-day event. I want to thank Bob Bethke, Richard
Appell, Bob Klingbeil, and Jim McGowan for their usual
fine job running the kids’ fishing contest. And special
thanks to Beth Piel for managing the kids’ games on
Saturday, and to Big John for running his Dollar Dive.
We had five crews attend our May Cruise-In to the
St. Charles Yacht Club just west of Fort Myers. I have
said before that this is one of the friendliest clubs in the
council and this cruise proved it to be right again. The
facility itself is first class, but it is the members and staff
that really make you feel welcome. During this weekend
we held the first annual “Venice Yacht Club Knot Tying
Contest.” The title was captured by The Red Team
lead by Cindy Abbot of Mach Turtle and the crew of
Romar II.
Our Cruise-In schedule continues to evolve for the
remainder of the year so check out the recent changes
and additions below. A quick reminder to all boaters
and non-boaters alike to join us for the Fleet Captains’
Luncheon every Tuesday starting at 11:30 a.m.
See you on the water,

Because of member support, we are making an impact
in our community. In May, we were overwhelmed by
receiving 28 grant applications requesting over $80,000

consider a donation to the Foundation to support our
focus on active military and veterans’ organizations and
our Signature Project, Feed the Hunger - Feed the Mind.

He became a role model and mentor for younger sailors.
Appointed by Representative Vernon Buchanan, he has
entered the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
John Thomas, VYBA Coach Honored
The Executive Committee of the VYBA Board of
Directors has named John Thomas an Honorary Life
Member of the board. John began teaching sailing at the
VYBA many years ago, initially also providing private
lessons. Later he joined the board of directors and
subsequently served as its president for several years. He
continues coaching our younger sailors. Sailors, parents,
and our current board members seek his valuable counsel
on many occasions. John is truly a revered asset to VYBA!
Only two others have been so honored in VYBA’s 64
years: Ann Spaulding, long time volunteer sailing instructor
and board member when the VYBA was incorporated in
1969, and Joe Dombrowski, Past Commodore of the VYC
and former VYBA Board of Directors member.
VYBA Alumni Association Formation Announced
Wishing it had happened long ago, VYBA formed an
alumni association as a mutual way for communication.
Records of many former VYBA sailors have been lost or
destroyed. Research is underway now to recover as many
names as possible.
If you know of former VYBA sailors, please let us
know. You may send a note by U. S. mail to VYBA, 1330
Tarpon Center Drive, Venice, FL 34285 or provide names
by phone or email to our sailing program director, Bryan
White: Phone: 468-1719 or
Email address: [email protected]

immediately thereafter as VYBA sailors prepare for the

Florida Council of Yacht Clubs
A general and executive meeting
was held at St. Andrews Bay Club on
May 13-14. Representatives of 26 out
of 36 member clubs were in attendance.
Commodore Jack Burwell reported
that 90 people have signed up for the
November FCYC Cruise. If interested,
contact VIP Travel in Sarasota. Limited
space is still available.
The Attendance Award for future FCYC meetings will
be determined by the number of people checked in at the
registration desk and not by the number of people at the
General Meeting.
Vice Commodore Audrey Rice represented the FCYC
at the Boating Federation Meeting held at the Isles YC.
Several relevant topics were discussed. It was important
that the FCYC was represented and will continue to
receive information from the Boating Federation.
Treasurer Bob Peterson reported that all bills are paid
including yearly dues.
Government Affairs, George O’Malley, reported
concerns over the recently passed Anchoring Bill in
South FL. These decisions were made on a regional
level. There are some concerns that there needs to be
State regulation.
Fleet Captain East, Wayne Stewart, reported that
there are concerns that Ethanol-15 may cause trouble in
gasoline engines.
Fleet Captain West, Bob Peterson, reported that the
Key West trip was a success. There were 32 people that
represented seven clubs.
Several clubs have contacted the Council concerning
membership. At this time, it appears that most will have
a difficult time meeting the criteria for membership, due
to non-profit status.
St. Charles YC reported that the Club will be open for
dinner on Wednesday and Saturday. Clubhouse will be
closed for vacation July 24 – August 10. Dockmaster will
be available and the pool will remain open.
St. Petersburg YC, Pass-a-Grille, is now open for
dockage. You must make your slip reservations through
the St. Petersburg YC Dockmaster.
Pelican Isles YC reported that the pass to the club is
open. However, if your draft is greater than 4 ½ feet it is
not recommended.
The next General Meeting will be held at Pelican Isles
Yacht Club on July 9.
Capt. Turk Hemseri, FCYC Director, Phone: 445-2050
