Welcome
Upon first visiting Granville, many feel as
though they’ve stepped back in time to
a kinder and gentler locale… an unhurried
place where folks still stop and chat on
by Steve Matheny
the street and people want to learn your name and become acquainted. Small
town America still exists, and you’ll find the best of it here in Granville.
to
Granville
People also are struck by
the look and feel of our well-kept
Village. If you didn’t know better, you’d swear
you were in a quaint New England college town! There’s a
reason behind this phenomenon. Granville was founded
by settlers from Massachusetts and Connecticut over
two hundred years ago, who arrived with a clear vision of
their new home. Key elements of that initial concept are
still evident today. You may even be reminded of Lerner
and Loewe’s charming musical, Brigadoon. In that classic
production, a magical village in the Scottish highlands
appears only for one day every one hundred years.
This mystical phenomenon occurs in order to protect
Brigadoon’s warmth and simplicity from being changed
by the outside world.
There’s more to the story, of course, but you may
nonetheless recognize some parallels upon your first
visit to Granville. However, unlike Brigadoon, Granville
does not disappear into the mist for centuries at a time.
Despite our reverence for our historical past, we strive to
continually rejuvenate and renew our village.
In this year’s publication, you’ll find three stories which
describe the thoughtfulness, care, and commitment
behind the renovation of several iconic landmarks in our
Village. In recent years, Denison University acquired both
the Granville Inn and the Donald Ross-designed Granville
Golf Course (now known as the Denison Golf Club at
Granville). After a nearly year-long renovation effort the
Granville Inn re-opened in May and, thanks to Denison’s

new stewardship, golfers will continue to play on one of
the most scenic and challenging public courses in Ohio.
Equally impressive are the remarkable renovation efforts
currently underway at the historic Buxton Inn. The Buxton
is honoring its distinction as being the oldest continuously
operating Inn in Ohio by conducting its rejuvenation and
renovation – one room at a time – while remaining open.
It is a great comfort to Granville residents and visitors alike
that these two landmark properties will continue to operate
as Inns and serve our community for many years to come.
In this issue you’ll also learn that Granville offers a number
of highly respected bed and breakfast options. And, you’ll
find a feature story about the Eating Local initiative, what
this means, and why Granville has truly become a food
destination. True to our agricultural roots and heritage,
Granville is at the forefront of this growing national trend.
We’re proud of the inroads that have been made in efforts
to source healthy and locally grown produce and farm
products. Finally, we also take an opportunity this year
to spotlight the remarkable success of Kendal at Granville
– a unique Quaker-based continuing care retirement
community. In 2015, Kendal at Granville will observe its
tenth anniversary. They are a shining example of a highcaliber, community-focused service organization which
has thrived in the local area.
I hope I have enticed you to visit and explore all that
Granville has to offer. Words and pictures alone aren’t
sufficient to tell the full story. If you have the opportunity,
I encourage you to stop by the Chamber of Commerce office
located in the heart of the Village. We’d love to tell you more
about our unique hometown!

Two Iconic Properties
Once Again Linked
by Ginny Sharkey
When Denison University purchased the
Granville Inn in 2013, it wasn’t following a
long-term strategy to enter the restaurant
and lodging business. Rather, the college
realized it was time to step in when the
previous purchase contract was pulled.
“We feel fortunate to be able to act on this
opportunity to invest in our remarkable community
and in this iconic property,” said Seth Patton, Vice
President for Finance and Management at Denison,
“We believe it is important for the continued health
of the village and surrounding area to keep the Inn
viable. Not only is it a significant local employer, its
services are important to Granville’s downtown and
to Denison visitors, as well.”
The college has invested heavily in the Inn, which
opened in 1924. The $9 million restoration and
renovation has been sensitive to the original architecture, which was in the style of a grand English-style
manor house. Local legend has it that scenes of a
1942 Henry Fonda movie based on a script written
by James Thurber, “The Male Animal,” were filmed in
part at the Inn. Indeed, Thurber was rumored to have
spent quite some time in Granville and the Inn itself
is referenced in the movie.
“Denison certainly did not plan to become an
innkeeper,” said Patton, “but because of the strong
ties and shared interests between Denison and
Granville, we are committed to this project. The goal
is to enhance the Granville Inn, making it a vital and
successful business.”
Columbus Hospitality has been selected to run the
Inn’s daily operations as well as the food services at
another recent Denison acquisition, the Denison Golf
Club at Granville, formerly known as the Granville Golf
Course. The golf course was given as a gift to the
college from its shareholders in 2014.

Two Properties continued
It is appropriate that the two properties are
once again linked through ownership; they
were both built by John Sutphin Jones who
hired legendary golf course architect Donald
Ross to design the course and prominent
Columbus architect Frank L. Packard to
design the Inn. Packard also redesigned
another Jones property, the Bryn Du Mansion,
which was originally built in 1865, and the
Granville Public Library, a project for which
Jones donated $10,000 in 1922.
The Denison Golf Club, long noted as one of the best
public courses in the Midwest, is a prime example
of Ross’ genius, taking full advantage of the rolling
Welsh Hills terrain to create spectacular views and
challenging holes. Hole No. 18, with a vista of the
village of Granville in the foreground and the Denison
campus atop College Hill beyond, is especially
stunning.

The gorgeous 1924 course is still true to Ross’ vision,
though it has been updated to be even more appealing
to players of all levels. “We want to make this a very
friendly course for everyone who likes to play — from
serious amateurs to those who just want to enjoy a day
in beautiful surroundings,” says Ben Cavey, Regional
Operations Manager for Davey Golf, the firm chosen to
manage the Denison Golf Club.

The Inn was purchased by Denison University in 2013
and after a carefully planned and meticulously executed
restoration and renovation the Granville Inn re-opened
its doors to the community in May.
A labor of love for many, the planning and construction
took just over one year to complete. And, in recognition
of the important relationship between the Inn and the
community, every effort was made to work with local

craftsmen and to source local materials. Robertson Construction of Heath,
Ohio, was responsible for overseeing the renovation and other services
including design, plumbing, electrical, painting and finish work which was all
performed by central Ohio companies.
Designed to maintain the original splendor while adding modern amenities
The renovation team sought guidance from local historians, archives from
Denison University, and even artifacts found carefully tucked into corners
and hidden behind walls to guide the restoration.
Nine new guest rooms were added on the third floor by raising the roof on
the back side of the building, creating a total of 39, including three suites.
The renovated Inn also features the addition of modernized mechanicals,
most notably an elevator, as well as new heating and cooling systems, fire
alarms and sprinklers.
The former Carriage House was transformed into an intimate new event space
suitable for up to 60 people. The three Carriage House doors open into a
walled courtyard creating a lovely outdoor entertaining area perfect for small
weddings, parties, social and business gatherings.

Historic Charm continued
Denison Hall, formerly known as the Great Hall,
received a complete facelift with higher ceilings, new
carpeting, updated fixtures and artwork. All of the
banquet and meeting spaces have been equipped with
state-of-the art audio visual equipment and technology
that provides a significant upgrade to what the Inn
previously offered and creates a functional and unique
option for business meetings and retreats.
Perhaps the most noticeable change that has come
from the renovation was made to accommodate
today’s more casual dining trends. The former pub
space is now the formal dining room, and the area
that formerly hosted the main dining room is a larger,
livelier tavern space — with restored original wood
paneling, original light fixtures and working fireplaces.
Now in Granville!
The heart of the Inn remains the kitchen
The state-of-the-art restaurant and catering kitchens
are a new ‘canvas’ for the chef and his team, inspiring
incredible new dishes along with traditional customer
favorites. The award-winning Oak Room restaurant
offers fine dining with chef-inspired menus, creative
entrées, and a sophisticated ambiance perfect for even
the most special occasion. The new Tavern at the Inn
is a warm and welcoming spot where guests can enjoy
classic tavern dishes such as fish and chips, specialty
burgers and soups, along with daily and weekly chef
specials and seasonal offerings. The Tavern is the
perfect place to enjoy European continental breakfast,
lunch, dinner, or drinks any day of the week.
Whether passing through town, planning a getaway,
dreaming about a wedding or simply in search of a
delicious bite to eat, be sure to stop in and experience
the true luxury and incomparable service of the new
Granville Inn.

Eating
Locally
by Andrew Kohn
In the Village of Granville eating locally
means local restaurants using locally
sourced ingredients.
The Farm-to-Table movement has swept the nation
with chefs sourcing products grown in local gardens,
supporting family farms, and utilizing their community
food infrastructure. Licking County is no different — with
the founding of the 30 Mile Meal Project, members of
our community are working to promote a local food
collaboration that facilitates institutional and
restaurant purchasing and promotes
local food access, all while furthering
the goal of economic development in
and around Licking County.
Granville is uniquely suited to take
full advantage of this local movement.
Many restaurants source products from
community farms. This may range
from offering a locally brewed beer
on tap to creating a menu that takes
full advantage of the numerous local

than 50 local vendors to the community every Saturday morning (from
early May through October), with offerings that range from in-season
vegetables and humanely raised meats to
delicious baked goods, and flowers grown
in county soil. While families certainly
take advantage of the Market, chefs also
can be seen perusing the fresh produce
as the official cowbell rings, signifying the
opening of the Market.

lunch. Many restaurants will have at
least one daily special composed of
items freshly acquired from the Market
that morning. The lettuce or beans
picked at sunrise by a local farmer may be
part of a delicious, savory entrée at lunch
time. And in Granville, that lunch may not only
include local produce and meat, but beer, wine, ice
cream, and locally roasted coffee.
The proximity of Granville to the Columbus metropolitan area has
increased development pressures on the area. In spite of this increased

pressure, the Village has managed to retain its
distinctive small town/rural character without the
suburban sprawl so common throughout central
Ohio. More than ever, consumers are aware of
the importance of sustainable local food — for the
health of their families as well as for the health of
the planet. Licking County is at the forefront of this
movement, and Granville, at its epicenter, is poised
to offer visitors a food experience.
Not only Granville restaurants have taken advantage
of local food, but also large purchasers, including
Denison University, the Granville Schools, and the
Licking Memorial Hospital. Such organizations
purchase large quantities from local producers,
spurring economic development in and around
Licking County. These actions provide welcomed
consumer education surrounding agriculture and
local food and, in turn, strengthen markets for local
producers and processors while capturing more of

The Buxton Inn–
A Historic
Renovation
by Adrienne Molnar
The historic Buxton Inn was opened in
1812 as a tavern with overnight rooms at
the crossroads of old stagecoach roads
servicing central Ohio.
Listed on the National Register
of Historic Places, the Buxton
is Ohio’s oldest continuously
operating Inn using its original
building. The Inn served as
Granville’s first post office, has
hosted many dignitaries and
celebrity guests, and is highly
regarded as a well-ordered
house with excellent cuisine
and a home-like atmosphere.
In December 2014, three
local preservationists led by
Robert Schilling purchased
the Inn with the intent to
preserve its distinguished
history and insure that
the Inn will continue to
operate for many years to
come. Mr. Schilling is no stranger to difficult
projects and, since the early 1980s, improving

communities through historical preservation has
been his passion. Indeed, he seems to relish those
projects that others feel are too challenging, too
complex, or simply too overwhelming. Regarding
this effort, Robert stated, “We are not only reviving
a business, we are preserving a piece of our unique
American history. For over two hundred years,
everyday people, titans of business, and builders of
the American foundation, have come together to
create the Buxton Inn’s legacy. It is important to us
to honor that legacy.”

Buxton Inn continued
So how do the new stewards of The Buxton plan
on securing its future? The first task was to study
the Inn, its history, buildings, staff and clientele to
determine what people liked and what they would
like to see changed. Second, was to apply for
Historic Tax Credits to help fund the renovations.
Once these are secured, extensive renovation
can begin in midsummer. In the meantime,
guest rooms are being revamped to provide
greater comfort for travelers. Original hardwood
floors are being exposed, linens upgraded, and
bathrooms refreshed. In addition, a new website
has been created to reflect the historical elegance
of The Buxton. Throughout these renovation
efforts, the Inn plans to remain open to continue
to serve its guests and the local community.
The Buxton’s General Manager, Adrienne
Molnar, is pleased to be a part of the Inn’s
future and looks forward to working closely
with organizations including the Granville Area
Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Licking
County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. “2015
is going to be an exciting year for Granville and Licking County,” said Adrienne. “There are many great projects
in the works. We’re eager to work with our local
organizations to increase leisure travel and attract
business clientele to the area. We look forward
to continuing our role as an upstanding part of
the Granville community and a steward of its rich
history.”
