I don't fully understand where the disconnect occurs, but it is often viewed in a negative light. Why don't we, who are engaged in the work of kingdom, view our financial stewardship in a more missional sense? Why don't we look at it like this young man? We talk so often about the first fruits, of what God has blessed us with and how everything Everything - comes from God and belongs to God, but there is a hesitancy when it comes time to offer these back to God. If you follow my Rev. John A. Worzala Dumke facebook account you might have noticed that from time to time I make references to the kingdom of God, or the kingdom of heaven, being associated with something. I have referenced the Kingdom to be like a craps table, or a Grateful Dead concert among other things. This past week my father, who covers agriculture news, texted my wife with a story that he believed was very preachable. This kingdom story comes to us from the Kewaunee County Fair where a young boy named Blake was selling his pig at auction. Now it is well known that at youth auctions patrons and vendors will pay out graciously to encourage the young people. Well Blake, before going into the auction ring, decided he was going to donate $500 of his proceeds to the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. During the auction a local business said they'd pay the $500 so Blake could keep his money. This ended up triggering a outpouring of donations from vendors totaling in thirty (30!) donations of $500. That's $15,000 dollars of gracious giving, inspired by a young man at a county fair. We have to be reminded that we are called to be good stewards of our finances for this is a sacred thing. We need to be reminded ever so often that our giving helps to fund and give life to the mission of the church in this place, in this neighborhood. The tough thing about summer is we become so preoccupied with vacations, weekends away, boating, etc, that sometimes we forget that the mission still needs to be funded. Summer is tough when it comes to church budgets, that is the honest truth - but I have faith that this congregation responds to the work God has called us to in this place and the support of the ministry of Peace Lutheran Church done in the name of Jesus Christ, in the wintery and warm months of the year. God’s Peace, Pastor John PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE GREETINGS, If you haven't already noticed, there is a new face in the church office. We welcome Kim BlakeJungwirth as our new Office Financial Coordinator. Kim has a little history with PLC. As a child, she was baptized here at Peace and remembers going to Sunday School here as well. She also lived across the street during her younger years. How interesting that years later she would be working here! Please feel free to stop in and introduce yourself to Kim when you are at the church. She is looking forward to meeting all of you. Join me in welcoming Kim into our Peace Family—We are happy to have you with us. We are also happy to welcome Kristi Cocking as our newest Leadership Team member. Kristi is replacing Matthew Pfluger on the Leadership Team as Matthew and wife Kayla and their children, Aili and Max, are moving. Kayla is going to attend Wartburg Seminary in Iowa. God's blessings to the Pfluger's as they start this new chapter in their lives! Thank you Kristi for agreeing to finish out Matthew's term. We are happy to have you on board! In this chaotic world in which we live, please take time to pray for others, do a good deed, be kind, and let the light of God shine through you. Be a blessing where you can and enjoy the rest of your summer! Summer Faith in Film Lesson Series // Members of Peace, family, and friends // Peace Lutheran - Rm 105 // Tuesday, August 23 - doors 6pm / movie 6:30pm // Feature presentation: AMISH GRACE Details: The Faith and Film series is about celebrating life and inspiring each of us through the power of story. Since the advent of the movies, there have been countless stories that have reached in and touched the soul. Consider the power of story to move you along in your journey. Consider the power of story to remind each of us of the importance of faith, hope and love. Consider the potential for the world to be a better place. And consider the possibility that films change people and people change the world. Light refreshments are provided by the Spirit Team. All this information, and more, can be found on the church web page: http://www.peaceoshkosh.org. Feature presentation: AMISH GRACE Synopsis: This film is based on a true story and the book Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy by Donald B. Kraybill, Steven M. Nolt, and David L. Weaver-Zercher. When a gunman killed five Amish children and injured five others in a Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania schoolhouse shooting in October of 2006, the world media attention rapidly turned from the tragic events to the extraordinary forgiveness demonstrated by the Amish community. Through the eyes of a grieving mother, Ida Graber, and other devastated families, this movie explores the Amish’s astonishing reaction to the horrific shootings – of forgiveness and compassion – Amish Grace 3 FAITH FORMATION projectFAITH:Camp (All year) CRAFT RETREATS: Craft retreats begin between 4-6pm, dinner is served 6:30-7pm, and programming begins at 7:30pm. Our hands.” Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. This year’s dedicated day of service will also mark the 15-year anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. As you continue to share God’s love with your neighbors, whether it is preparing and delivering meals to people and families rendered homeless or cleaning your neighborhood parks, consider thanking and holding in prayer the emergency responders in your area as part of your service. “The world can be a dangerous place. But there are some who, when disaster strikes, run toward the danger. These are the first responders, firefighters, police and EMTs, who live out their baptismal vocation in service to their communities in times of intense need. They do God’s work with their hands.” – ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton Service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ – every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life – flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace. God’s Work. Our Hands Weekend at Peace is September 10-11. Sign ups will be at church and online with service at such places as Growing Oshkosh, Day by Day Warming Shelter and Habitat for Humanity. 6 7 8 MEMBER INFORMATION PRAYER REQUESTS FUNERALS If you or someone you know (with their permission) would like to be put on the prayer list, please contact Pastor John either by phone (231-4730) or email [email protected]. These will include examining the origins and structure of the Bible, its authors and key personalities, the history it reveals, the impact this book has had on civilization, and, of course, the theology and faith it preaches. Read the Good Book lately? Peace Lutheran is taking steps to improve our overall Bible literacy with a program we call Rediscovering Scripture. After all, the Holy Bible is the very foundational document of our faith. It traces our faith story and theology from the very beginning through the end of the first century AD. It is the definitive source for all that we believe — and something we should all be well acquainted with. We’ll encourage members of the congregation to participate in the Groups they find most interesting. We are developing further program enhancements, opportunities and inclusions beyond that. Pew Bibles To start, we’re going to be placing Bibles in the pews at Peace Lutheran. We’ll be using these Pew Bibles during worship services. The goal is to get us all a little more familiar and comfortable with opening this unique and special book. We Need Your Help Providing Pew Bibles will be a considerable expense. We’ll need about 250 copies to adequately provide for everyone in our services and study groups. These Pew Bibles are $10 each and we’re asking members of the congregation to help with the cost. For the remainder of the summer, our weekly Bulletins, in addition to this newsletter, will include an order form where people can donate Pew Bibles. Please prayerfully consider helping with the program. All the Pew Bibles will be the same edition of the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV). This is the version endorsed by the ELCA. Having us all use the same Bible will also make it easier to stay on the “same page” during services. We plan to begin using Pew Bibles in the fall of this year. Anyone who wants to have their donated Bibles inscribed with a special dedication can do so, but those donations need to be made by September 1. There’s space on the Order Form for that purpose. You can also purchase copies for personal use at home for the same $10 cost. Advanced Study In addition to encouraging independent home study of scripture, we will also be holding Study Groups that will approach Bible literacy from a number of different 11 BIBLE LITERACY TEAM DEDICATONS FOR PURCHASED PEW BIBLES Gerald Henry Schettl Joseph & Agnes Schettl Harold & Elsa Niebauer Harold & Ruth Sitter Dorothy & Eugene Balta Lester & Violet Klabunde Henrietta & Reube Tesch James Buck Dale Smith Barbara & Florian Olejnik Ruth & Melvin Berholtz Agnes Nikolaus Ferdinand Nikolaus Jimmy Nikolaus Wallace Lord Michael Nelson Shannon Clark Showers Clarence & Jo Weber George Y Olga Weber Burton & Dorothy Lewis Harold & Neva Helm Clarence & Valois Schock Fred & Jean Nelson Alph & Meriel Overby Thanks to all who have donated for the pew Bibles, whether or not they included dedications. SPIRIT TEAM Why You Need to Move Beyond Tweetable Bible Reading Cultivating spiritual disciplines in the Internet era By Chandler Vannoy, as posted in Relevant Magazine, July 11, 2016 In our world today, every bit of news and media thought while swimming around a fish bowl. Yeah. Let comes in short, easy-to-read snippets that seek to get that sink in for a second (but probably not longer than the point across very quickly. eight seconds). This is great for breaking news, quotes and quick thoughts, but unfortunately, our minds are becoming rewired to expect all information to be fast and convenient for us. We are trained to read 140 character tweets, watch six second vines and show someone we care by simply double tapping their photo. A recent study showed that people’s attention spans are now only about eight seconds. That is a second less than a goldfish can concentrate on a Our generation is apt to always be thinking about the next thing, and in turn, we become distracted easily. Even the San Francisco 49ers know that this is true: They implemented “cell phone” breaks into practices and meetings every half hour, because studies from Stanford show that millennials are too distracted and really aren’t learning anything after that threshold. (continued on page 13) 12 SPIRIT TEAM This might seem intuitive, but while we often plan out other aspects of our days, we often avoid doing so This way of thinking has seeped into the way we read with Bible reading, instead just hoping we’ll get to it if the Bible. These FLL’s were built by George Sawall using 90% reclaimed materials. There has been a small amount of confusion about who was going to get the licensing paperwork completed, but even without the nameplate, the libraries are still functional and you can start using them to trade books. We would love to continue to stock them with books. If you have books for children or adults, please consider donating them to our FLL’s. You can drop them off at the Preschool Office, Room 104, or you can put them directly in the libraries themselves. There is a library by the preschool’s 8th Avenue entrance (Door #7) and there is a library by the playground fence in the Circle Driveway. Check them out! Heather B. Miller 14 SOUTH PARK DANCE—THE WRAP UP This year’s South Park Dance, SPD, has been labeled the best SPD to date! And while I absolutely agree with the label, I was not the person to create it. Carla Nigl and Carl Sosnoski, the two people who started the event eight years ago and brought our group into the event three years ago, have dubbed this year The Best Year Yet. The big difference--our hardworking volunteers! This year we had more volunteers from our Church Family than in the past two year combined. I can vouch that they put in some long and hard hours on Friday July 8th beginning with setup and ending with the take down. The core group of volunteers began at 9:30 in the morning and didn’t finish until 11:30 at night. We were helped out by many more volunteers who came to work in shifts--selling concessions, maintaining clean grounds, grilling, stocking beverages, and maintaining the cash boxes. We brought in enough money to cover the cost of the technology updates that were made in Room 105 and to also contribute to replacing lighting in the sanctuary. We are very happy to be able to make these contributions as we all benefit from the updates. We are already planning for next year, and we hope to make that year the next Best Year Yet! Heather B.
