Go Green! Indian Institute of Technology Delhi ENVIRONMENT AWARENESS CAMPAIGN: THE FUTURE WE WANT | CASE STUDY Jan 2013 Environment Awareness Campaign: The Future We Want | Case Study June ’12 IMAGE : RIO20+ HERE WE GO! The future lies in your hands..! Introduction Negatives The Earth has enough to fulfill every one's need, but not every one's greed... Due to lack of guidance, we could not follow it up in significant way. We studied all the submissions and kept it on our resource Elibrary. We are in search of a good mentor professor who can guide us wherever required. NSS IIT Delhi and Sustainable IIT Delhi came together this year with a noble initiative of the rigorous and much talked about Environment Awareness Campaign which started from 5th June, 2012 on the special occasion of World Environment Day. Workings The Campaign started with a wonderful case study/article writing competition spanning over a period of one month. In this competition, we presented a set of problem statements and situations based on some common environmental issues of our country. Care was taken so that participants could directly connect to the problem set and his/her efforts to do such a deep analysis may help the society in some way. The participants were judged on the basis of innovation, originality of thought, clarity, quality and ground reality of ideas. Positives Good Outreach all over Delhi, off campus and in Campus! It also attracted few PHD students, Environment enthusiasts, IIT Delhi & other college’s professors who will be joining us in our next semester environment workings and endeavor. CELEBRATING INDIAN WILDLIFE WEEK Jan 2013 Celebrating Indian Wildlife Week 1st Oct’12 - 7 th Oct’12 IMAGE: INDIAN WILDLIFE HERE WE GO! Animal Planet, Surprisingly human! Introduction NSS & Sustainable IITD over a period of one week (1st Oct’12 - 7th Oct’12), organized several environment educational activities with a purpose of celebrating Indian wildlife week. The idea was to create awareness among people about the importance of nature, biodiversity and how it can be saved and conserved, learn about the parts of a tree, the role of trees, and how other wildlife depend on trees for survival. All programs were open to public in order to Participate | Create | Connect | Inspire. Workings We had inaugurated the “Celebration of Indian wildlife week” with a movie screening followed by plethora of events on the floor keeping in mind our college Minor 2 exams progression at the same time. Movie Screening(GO VEG!), Photography cum documentation competition for IITD Campus Biodiversity Magazine, Online awareness about Indian endangered species over social websites, Online discussion forum, Nature Walk in Campus dedicated towards awareness of Flora and Fauna inherited by our Campus and location of biodiversity information board across institute were some of the main events. We received huge number of biodiversity photographs submissions by students and IIT Delhi residents. Progress Our workings on Campus Biodiversity magazine and designing of biodiversity board to be located at different places across institute are still on. Hopefully, this project will be over by next two months. Positives Indeed it touched the target audience as expected but still some more good ideas could have also been incorporated, but due to close proximity with minors we were unable to do that. Negatives Online discussion forum was not properly channelized although we still shot expected audience through social websites. Moreover very few took interest in discussing things over the online portal as minor exams were on progress. CAMPUS WASTE MANAGEMENT IIT DELHI Jan 2013 Campus waste management IIT Delhi Aug-Nov’12 IMAGE: IIT DELHI HERE WE GO! Start Small, Start Now…! Campus Waste Management We periodically organize campus cleanliness drive with the motto "Let us keep the Campus Green and Clean". Lots of students, Professors, administration and IIT staff unite together for this grand green initiative. The area which are usually covered are entire campus including Neelkanth area, Faculty Apartments, Guest House, Hostel areas, Workshop, Biotech Lounge, Nalanda Grounds, SAC & SDA Subway. Our campus is found to be cleaner than previous years. The areas in the back of the hostels which were raised as a concern sometime back also showed improvement. But a lot of littering was observed in the subway, SDA; mainly the muck (waste) of ice-cream and nearby vendors. Considering that, we are planning to get a dustbin established in that area. The vendors have also been instructed to keep dustbins with themselves. On Spot Segregation: PET bottles were being collected in a separate polybag in each region. These collected PET bottles have been sent to a plastic recycling firm; Gurgaon based enterprise. Apart from the above, we are still on execution and planning stage for efficient and quality Campus waste management, completing our homework and seeking guidance all around with an aim of Zero Waste Management. POSTER COLLECTION DRIVE Jan 2013 Poster Collection Drive Sept-Nov’12 IMAGE: RENDEZVOUS 2012 HERE WE GO! Money grows on trees: Recycle Paper! Introduction Progress This is one of our Environment Team voluntarily initiatives towards Reduce, Reuse, Recycle of Paper wastes at our IITD Campus. Presently, we have only focused on our first hit towards all Institute and hostel notice boards. The posters being used for publicity and sharing information all across are collected after it expiry date for variety of purpose. We will soon expand our workings further in paper wastage further letting this PCD success as our platform to leap upon. As usual, we will carry forward with this scheme, and try to find the best possible uses for these collected posters. All the posters are collected at the end of the month from each hostel and accumulated at one place. There are various ways of re-usage of outdated posters at campus like Using back side of the poster for flashing the other notices again, Using blank back side of poster for painting and sketching workshop conducted by NSS IITD Teaching project, Sending posters to NAB (National association for Blind) for its brail conversion and a lot more... Workings We collected outdated posters all across the institute and hostel areas for various social and environmental purposes focusing on Reduce, Reuse and Recycle of these posters which previously were being dumped up or sold to Kawadi wala without any proper environmental considerations. We installed a collection system in every hostel and institute areas and got huge amount of posters collected every week. We carried forward this project on trial basis for three months(Sep, Oct, Nov'12) which included general college schedule, our biggest cultural fests of India (Speranza, Literati, Rendezvous) etc. In total we have collected around 6000 posters so far where each poster printing cost around Rs. 20/- Further analysis has been done over the PCD Project Report & documentation. Positives Indeed it’s a great Success! We need to make this solution sustainable throughout by installation of E-notice boards and E-posters usage across the institute. A good cooperation and appreciation by students, institute and hostel staff were availed. Negatives Since these all things are our self-initiative, and collecting posters by student basis is not the correct way, the administration should look into it. Since collection and trial re-use of these collected posters during Rendezvous time required a lot of voluntary effort, efforts need to be put in to reduce student dependency of this scheme. The illustration says it all. It's ironical that most of us show concern at the cost of our own cause. Sad but true. GREEN RENDEZVOUS & PET BOTTLES COLLECTION DRIVE Jan 2013 2 Green Rendezvous & PET Bottles Collection Drive 19-22 Oct’12 IMAGE: RENDEZVOUS 2012 HERE WE GO! THE ENVIRONMENT, AS WE SEE IT… Introduction With a budget of more than 50 lakhs, more than 400 participating colleges, performance by ace stars, Rendezvous is an event full of Grandeur, Competition and Glamour. In these bright lights and loud sounds, nature’s plea for a sustainable development goes unheard. We, as Sustainable IITD and NSS IITD have tried best to contribute our small bit to a greener Rendezvous by our initiatives toward Campus waste management and recycling pet bottles which would otherwise land up in landfills or in hands of people who sell spurious stuff. Workings A new waste management technique for PET bottles has been installed in IITD campus during Rendezvous. Most plastic bottles (colddrink and water bottles) are made of Polyethylene terephthalate (PET).You can easily identify a PET plastic by their unique code, a resin identification code number "1" inside the universal recycling symbol, usually located on the bottom of the container. Activities covered: Launching RDV’12 Green initiative by IIT Delhi Director, Prof. R. K. Shevgaonkar addressing around 7000 people in OAT, IIT Delhi. For environment workouts, RDV appointed 10 RDV'12 Environment Ac-heads from our green team under Environment Committee, RDV'12 with ALL PASS ENTRY. Reuse of Posters collected in Poster Collection drives, using its back blank side for spreading environment message, instructions etc. Flashing video Teaser and Environment message, instructions in LCD screens installed all across institute and also in College movie screening Hall (Dogra Hall) during intermissions, initial and endings. Here is the link to the official video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2RbsKuR tzQ&feature=share We installed so many cartoons at different important places for handling general waste management, later on it was collected by Cleaning staff, IIT Delhi. We in collaboration with a plastic recycling firm; Gurgaon based enterprise installed 4-5 big PET BOTTLES COLLECTION BOX at most prominent places during those times like OAT, Library food stalls and near SBI Bank stalls. Some extra collection boxes for Pet bottles were kept at different locations like FX to ensure the same. With proper management and pitching for PET bottles, they were collected specifically in those BOXES and each night bottles were gathered at a place and boxes were refilled with new filler. We collected around 1500 plastic bottles which have been sent for recycling. Positives Indeed a great Success! We need to make this solution sustainable by permanent installation of PET Bottles collection Box followed by periodical collection and recycle. A good cooperation and appreciation by students, institute and hostel staff were availed. Negatives Due to less manpower and solely students’ initiative, it was indeed a very challenging, treacherous job for us handling lakhs of crowd present at IIT Delhi campus during those days. We need more guidance from the experts, administrative support and motivation from the ideals to sustain this solution. Due to excessive use of plastics, crackers etc. this Rendezvous could not become ideally “green” but we hope the next time it would be. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2013 NEW YEAR'S GREEN INITIATIVE: GREEN AWARENESS CAMPAIGN IITD Wish you a very happy and green New Year’13.
