It's also a hard task to point out a single event because there have been so many in the past decades that the ones not mentioned could easily be wronged. Nevertheless it can be said that it is not just the world's largest flying hill that makes Planica what it is. Planica is the place where the history of ski jumping and flying has been and will be created. Planica has outgrown the frame work of the country on the sunny side of the Alps and has become a world renowned synonym for the greatness of sports. Some say that the things in Planica are finally changing for the better. We who have for many years been a part of this largest sporting event in Slovenia, say the same. The new Nordic center will be a reward for all who have in one way or another been a part of Planica's history, and will be the proof that Planica deserves more - more for competitors, coaches, viewers, journalists, organizers, for everybody who have in the last seventy and more years created Planica's story. 15 FIS Ski Flying World Championships 2010 In the valley of the jumping hills man has for the first time in history jumped over 100 meters and over 200 meters and then 239 meters which is today's world record and will for sure be soon exceded. In Planica the technical masters have created a new history of jumping and flying hills construction. Gorec, Bloudek and Rožman's heretage has been in great style carried on by brothers Gorišek, and the valley at the foot of Ponce mountains stays forever engraved in the minds of countless devotees of this sport – the ones that at the speed of more than 100 km/h take off into the precepice as well as the ones who, down by the outrun, with open mouths and unbelieving eyes, witness the shifting of borders of human ability. Ansambel bratov Avsenik – Planica FIS Ski Flying World Championships 2010 20 PLANICA AND CHILDREN The artistic competition Planica and Children has become an indispensable part of the Planica story. The competition began in 2005 when two classes of a primary school in Ljubljana were invited to visit the valley at the foot of Ponce mountains. Since then every year more children from all over Slovenia take part in the competition. We have till now received innumerable excellent posters which show how children love ski jumping and how well they know Planica. Of course, we have prepared the competition this year as well. Together with the Ministry of Education and Sports and the Institute of Fair-play and Tolerance in Sport we make a well-trained team that enables our youngest to enjoy unforgetable days in Planica. The children who visit this most northwestern part of Slovenia get a chance to see the best representatives of the fascinating sport called ski flying. We are very glad that every year we have the oportunity to see primary school students enjoy this winter spectacle, and while offering fun we also keep in mind that it is our task to present to them the healthy way of living that goes along with sports. 21 FIS Ski Flying World Championships 2010 This year seven and eight graders and their teachers together with other visitors, organizers and journalists will once more with enthusiasm watch the flying hill and loudly cheer each flight. We must by all means also mention the project lead by insurance company Zavarovalnica Triglav d.d. which has been for decades bringing more than 3.000 children to Planica each year from all over Slovenia and thus presenting this wonderful event to our youngest visitors. FIS Ski Flying World Championships 2010 22 FACEBOOK As more and more people today use the internet as a source of information and entertainment, we have decided to present Planica also on the Facebook, the most popular and the most populated virtual social network. On April 29, 2009 the page Planica 2010 FIS Ski Flying World Championships was created. By the end of February 2010 it already had over 4.000 fans, most of them of course from Slovenia - from Ljubljana and Maribor, to be precise. Other fans come from Norway, Austria, Poland and Finland and some even from the United States. 87 percent of fans fall into age category 13 - 34 years. Increase of older ski flying fans is expected when older internet users accept Facebook as an everyday part of the internet. The fans' comments show their desire to improve the page and help Planica shine in all its splendour. Many of them also claim that Planica is one of the most eagerly expected sporting events at home and abroad. 23 FIS Ski Flying World Championships 2010 PLANICA IN NUMBERS . . . . . . . . . . 67.000 people visited Planica competitions last year. More than 14 TV companies will broadcast Ski Flying World Championship. More than 400 journalists and photoraphers were accredited last year. 9 seconds is the duration of the record flight of 239 meters. 4.000 children who took part in the competition Planica and Children visited Planica in the last five years. 832 flights have been performed by competitors in the World Cup competitions since 2005. 39 jumping records have been set in Planica. 39.066,5 meters in total have been flown at qualifications, team and individual competitions during 2004 Planica World Championship. 18 countries took part in the last Planica World Championship. 17 countries took part in Planica World Cup competitions in the last five years. MEDIA COMMENTS Spiegel, March 17, 2000 “Einfach geil.” (”Simply cool!”) Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, February 6, 2004 “Stress values like in the Formula 1!” MMC RTV Slo, March 19, 2005 “Exceptional atmosphere at the foot of Ponce mountains!” 24ur.com, March 20, 2005 “Record by record in Planica.” Eurosport comment at Romøren`s record flight, March 20, 2005 “The guys are not normal, the guys are not normal!” Delo, March 17, 2006 “The hunt for the lenghts is open.” Siol.net, March 15, 2008 “Ski flying Mecca.” Slovenia Times, March 6, 2009 “A place for daring men.” FIS Ski Flying World Championships 2010 24 Interview Jelko Gros, Chief of competition What do you as the chief of competition expect from this World Championship? A World Championship always brings a world champion as well. It is not just a series of competitions. From my point of view it is of course one of the peaks that I as an official can experience. I always devide the expectations to personal ones which I have already mentioned and to the ones pertaining to the organization or the event itself. I expect that my teammates, who I've been working with for two years now and who had of course been here before me, will do all the work that they do so well. We Slovenians have always been well-known as good sporting workers. I also expect them to remain loyal to Planica and the whole tradition. In what way will this World Championship be different from those abroad and those from Planica's past? It's hard to say whether we will do better or worse, because no competition in the world equals its precedent. My first and formost care is that we do all we can. If the wether is fine and the competitors are in good form, the viewers will enjoy the competition. And if besides that Slovenian jumpers do their part well, it will be the greatest reward for all, including the guys who already work in Planica or will start to soon. The Olympic Games will just be over. Can this World Championship be compared with them? What motivation will competitors have? I think that due to the Olympic Games the festivity in Planica will be even greater, as will be competitive tension. I think that a day after Olympic Games athletes forget about them and go for new victories. We the officials have a bigger problem with that because we have to take history into account, but athletes have to forget everything and look ahead as if nothing has happened. Therefore I have no doubts about their motivation. Which part will the new rules play? With this system we will be witnessing many long flights. I expect to see at least fifteen jumps over 200 meters and at least two over two hundred and thirty meters at each competition. Is it different or perhaps harder to manage a competition in Planica than in other jumping or flying hills? Planica competition is rather demanding. The conditions are predictable but they change at certain hours of the day. To jump in Planica with the wind blowing from behind, as it happened last year, is not possible. The flying hill is made for record lenghts and it's a pure pleasure to see the lifting wind. Competitions in Harrachov are perhaps more demanding to manage due to specific aerodynamic conditions on the jumping hill. In that sense Kulm and Oberstdorf are more simple. 25 FIS Ski Flying World Championships 2010 www. pocket.com Download a free city guide at www.inyourpocket.com Hotels Restaurants Shops Nightlife Sightseeing Events Maps LJUBLJANA “In Your Pocket: A cheeky, wellwritten series of guidebooks.” The New York Times February - March 2010 The Best of Slovenia Our favourites from the past, present and future Picasso & Clavé Enjoy your The works of two Spanish masters come to Ljubljana COMPLIMENTARY COPY of Ljubljana In Your Pocket Ski Flying Championship N°10 - € 2.90 N°5 - 6Lt www.inyourpocket.com www.inyourpocket.com Watch people fly through the air at Planica Hotels Restaurants Cafés Nightlife Sightseeing Events Maps BLED “In Your Pocket: A cheeky, wellwritten series of guidebooks.” The New York Times Winter 2009 - Spring 2010 Including BOHINJ & BOVEC Ski & Spa A comprehensive guide to Slovenia’s best resorts Winter Masters Games Bled hosts one of the world’s largest multi-sport recreational events Shopping in Ljubljana N°2 - € 2.90 N°5 - 6Lt www.inyourpocket.com www.inyourpocket.com A rundown of what the nearby capital has to offer Europe’s leading publisher of locally produced city guides E S S E N T I A L C I TY G U I D E S Individual success hinges on surrounding yourself with the right people, tools and solutions.
