With the full approval of the Ministry of Education, Cyprus, the sports section of PASCAL English School Larnaka has begun its operation with daily morning training for the athletes on the school premises. Athletes involved in the sports program at PASCAL English School Larnaka, train in football, judo or taekwondo and as from the next academic year, other sports such as basketball and swimming, will also operate. Support is offered by a qualified Sports Psychologist and also by means of frequent ergometric and field testing to ensure the students‟ safe and steady progress. GLIMPSE@PASCAL Reflecting, Rebuilding: Emerging stronger 8th National Session European Youth Parliament Cyprus 28 August – 31 August 2014 Larnaka The European Youth Parliament (EYP) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) which aims to encourage independent thinking, intercultural encounters, voluntary action and personal initiative amongst young people in Cyprus. The National Session is the biggest annual event organized by EYP Cyprus. Delegates from this session are selected to take part in future international events. The students, who are divided into committees comprised of different schools, are given a unique opportunity to discuss current European topics and come up with their own resolutions to these problems. Some of the topics of this year‟s General Assembly – “Reflecting, rebuilding: Emerging stronger” ranged from the attainment of energy independence in light of the Ukraine crisis, corruption in the EU, Balkan integration into the EU and the controversial legalization of single-sex marriages throughout Europe. This year‟s „Discussing Europe‟ forum raised the topic: “Empowering the Youth: The Workforce of Tomorrow” with three speakers: Mr Nicos Marcou, Head of Human Resources, Assistant Director, EY Cyprus, Mr Panayiotis Sentonas, President of the Cyprus Youth Board and Mr Yiannos Yiannaki Commissioner for Volunteering and Non -Governmental Organisations of Cyprus. This year‟s delegates from PASCAL English School Larnaka were: Pantelitsa Stavrou, Marilena Papachristodoulou, Natalie Redpath, Lazaros Hadjiforados, Stylianos Hadjiforados, Nicole Costa (journalist) and Margarita Samouridou (organizer). They were accompanied by their teachers Aspasia Manti and Christiane Camacho. PAGE 3 “The Athletic Section of PASCAL English School Larnaka along with the Elite Sporting Club have taken upon the responsibility to carry out JUDO demonstrations initiated by the Cyprus Athletic Federation in all Primary Schools aiming at promoting JUDO. Ms Despina Kaittani, Judo trainer of Pascal‟s Athletic Section and of the Elite Sporting Club, will carry out, along with her team, 4 demonstrations at the Federation‟s premises in Nicosia. More than 1000 pupils will watch these demonstrations.” 1st PANCYPRIAN JIU JITSU TOURNAMENT The pupil of the Athletic Section of PASCAL English School Larnaka and member of the Elite Sporting Central Pupils’ Council Elections On 7th Oct 2014, our Class Presidents met to elect the Central Pupil Council. The elections were carried smoothly and the Year 6 candidates that ran for the Presidency of the Central Pupil Council gave a short speech in their attempt to convince others to vote for them. Our pupils were given the opportunity to meet with the athletes and play with them. Our School believes in promoting inclusion of youngsters with Intellectual Disabilities. glimpse@moreevents JUDO DEMONSTRATION FROM PASCAL ENGLISH SCHOOL & ELITE SPORTING CLUB TO LARNAKA’ S PRIMARY SCHOOLS Club, Paula Costa, won Gold Medal at the 1st Pancyprian Jui Jitsu Tournament which took place in Nicosia on Saturday 25 October 2014. PAGE 4 PASCAL ENGLISH SCHOOL LARNAKA PUPIL VOLUNTEERS AT PANCYPRIAN SPECIAL OLYMPICS Eighty-five of our pupils were active volunteers at the Pancyprian Special Olympics from Monday 13th October until Friday 31st October. The “Games of the Heart” were an amazing experience for all our volunteers and we are extremely proud of the maturity, ethos and affection with which our pupils handled themselves. Congratulations to all the athletes from Special Education Schools/Institutions taking part and to our pupils! GLIMPSE@PASCAL PASCAL English School, Larnaka Annual Careers Fair On Wednesday, 19th November 2014, PASCAL English School Larnaka successfully hosted its 8th annual Careers Fair on its school premises, between 7 pm. till 9 pm. Professionals from a range of occupations, along with officials from various Cypriot universities were the honourable guests invited to liaise with students from years 3, 4, 5, 6 and parents/guardians. A presentation was given by two professionals in the counseling field, namely, Mr. Chris Sofroniou and Mr. Nikos Chrisostomou followed by an open discussion with parents concerning the different ways students can choose their course of study. Students and parents/ guardians were later encouraged to speak to professionals about their employment and prior studies in order to better understand the academic process and practical issues related to each profession. In addition, officials from various universities of Cyprus informed those interested about application procedures for entry into their respective universities. Euro-quiz 2014 Marilena Papachristodoulou, a pupil of PASCAL English School Larnaka, achieved the highest score amongst pupils of Year 5 who voluntarily took part in the Euroquiz 2014. The General knowledge contest with the European Union as a theme, was held by the European Parliament in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture. Marilena will be invited to participate in a Session of the European Parliament, known as “Euroscola”, as a representative of our school at the Headquarters of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. PAGE 5 Collection and Distribution of food High Achievers International Awards 2014 PASCAL English School Larnaka has set fundamental objectives towards the promotion of activities and charity events that contribute socially to our community and individuals in need, cultivating a humanitarian and voluntary spirit within the students. It is within this spirit that we once again launched this campaign in order to collect as much food as possible for the Aradippou Municipal Agora, for the families in need and in particular for families who were literally starving this year more than ever due to the economic crisis. Thirteen pupils of PASCAL English School Larnaka have achieved the Edexcel High Achievers International Awards for Art GCE A level: Fine Art & International GCSE Art and Design: Fine Art. What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is that fact that these students are a year younger than most art exam candidates doing the exam and achieving these high international subject marks. Our sincere congratulations to our PASCAL Engish School Larnaka students who are: Art GCE A level: Fine Art Loukia Liperi, Lambros Theodorou, Kyriaki Theodorou, Fotini Stephanou, Gabriella Soteriou and Katerina Kyriakou. School Halloween Party A Halloween party was organized by the Artemis House, the Parents Association, the School and the School council on Friday 31st October, between 9:00 pm and 12:00 pm in the School Cafeteria. Educational Trip to Protaras for Forms 1&2 An optional Overnight School Excursion to Ayia Napa was organized for Form 1 and 2 students which was a great success. It‟s fast moving, so there‟s no chance of getting bored! It has many benefits, both mental and physical: It burns calories, tones up your muscles, improves coordination, develops concentration and selfdiscipline, and teaches you how to work in a GLIMPSE@PASCAL We are planning to invite a dermatologist to talk to students about skincare as well as a fashion stylist to give advice on what to wear according to each body type and style. A nutritionist will be asked to talk to them about diet and healthy nutrition and a personal trainer will be invited to demonstrate an exercise regime. We are also planning to take students to a beauty salon to show make up application techniques as well as to a perfumery to demonstrate how perfumes are produced. The aim of the cooking club is to help students to learn basic food preparation skills, prepare and cook healthy, nutritious meals, understand how to prepare foods using good sanitary practices and prevent injuries in the kitchen by following glimpse@thisyear’sclubs Our aim is to provide our graduating year with a series of club days that will combine learning with having fun. We aim to treat our 6th Formers in their final year by exposing them to new experiences that they may not have thought of trying otherwise. We want to stimulate them into being more active and open minded about what Cyprus has to offer but more than that, our aim is to create a thread of activities that they will remember, courtesy of their school. By participating in the organized events, we hope that our members will see the benefit of being in- imagination. These activities may include fun craft activities that involve the use of exciting material, depending on the season, field trips to galleries and art exhibition centers, experience of the concept of drama & body movement. The students will begin to unlock channels of communications and self-expression, group or individual projects, competition entries organized by the Ministry of Education and glimpse@moreclubs PAGE 7 The aim of the club is to develop the dancing skills of the students in different types of dances such as Street dance, Salsa, Latin, Greek etc. Maria Karapitta, the Mambo Dancing School teacher, will visit our school premises to teach the students different dances. Every club day, students will have the chance to learn the basic steps of different dances. Students who choose to join the Drama Club develop an understanding of Drama through the use of technology, lectures, discussion and an exploration of theatrical games. They develop a cohesive sense of team spirit, through the use of theatrical games, trust games, and an exploration of drama. They participate in different ways: acting, makeup, scenery/ props, script writing, music, or costumes. Students have the opportunity to show off their creative side! Decoupage is a decorative technique in which a design is made of cut-out pieces of newspapers, magazines, catalogs, books, printed clip art, wrapping paper, greeting cards, fabric, tissue paper, lace, paper napkin or ribbons The main aim is to create a club run by past EYP alumni to train new pupils for participation in the European Youth Parliament and other similar events. Team building strategies, brainstorming, resolution writing, and discussion among the activities of the club. The European Youth Parliament Cyprus (EYP) is a non-governmental organization which aims to encourage independent thinking, intercultural encounters and personal initiative amongst young people in Cyprus. The aim of the club is to introduce students to the organization and its philosophy. Each year, 6 students from the club will be chosen to represent our school in the EYP National Session. Conventional wisdom in the old days stated that God-given talent was the be all and end all for a successful career in football. Training was only a necessary supplement to what was already imbued within a particular individual. Today, while the term „talent‟ is still used, developments in coaching have allowed youngsters to emulate the greats with increasing ease. Indeed, such is the importance of football coaching skills club. Futsal is one of the most quickly developing sports. Pu- PAGE 8 The aim of the club is to enable students to work out, improving their overall fitness. The members of the club will have the chance to do something that will take their mind off the stress of the school and at the same time they will manage to improve their aerobic fitness, flexibility and strength. During the six club days, we will go to Platinum gym in Larnaka where the instructors will discuss fitness with club members, encouraging them to continue working out. Then, girls will follow a specific program and will also have the chance to participate in a TRX class. Paintball is a fun sport that requires stealth, tactics, stamina and a high pain threshold. The Paintball club aims to allow students to experience the different paintball ranges in Eastern Cyprus, visiting a different one each club day. To teach safe and responsible use of firearms including sound decisionmaking, self-discipline and concentration. It aims to enhance development of participant's self-concept, character and personal growth through safe, educational and socially acceptable involvement in a shooting activity. It promotes the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship, and ethical behavior. It encourages understanding of natural resource concepts through participant's interests in shooting and hunting. GLIMPSE@PASCAL Students will interact with specific organizations, who are active in social welfare. Students will be motivated actively, not only through specific activities during the club days, but also during the whole academic year in the internal school events, to get involved in different aspects of social welfare. Particularly, we are going to visit and cooperate with CHRISTOU STELIOU IOANNOU FOUNDATION: Visit and be informed about the operation of “Κοινωνικό Παντοπωλείο Λάρνακας», visit UNICEF, and organize Blood Donation. Additionally we will visit the pediatric department at the General Hospital of Larnaka and create a pleasant atmosphere and experience for the children by playing, drawing etc., visit “Argos”, which is an animal shelter in Ormidia as well as the Cyprus Red Cross. glimpse@evenmoreclubs regulations. The Sport Variety Club offers the chance to its members to “get away” from lessons and school by engaging themselves in pleasant and fun activities.
