About MisCon
MisCon is Montana’s longest running science fiction and fantasy convention. We promote literacy and the arts within the
science fiction and fantasy genres, and we work to provide a forum where families can spend time together.
With discussion panels on the crafts of writing, art, contemporary science trends, cinema and theater, MisCon has
something for everyone with an interest in science fiction, fantasy, or horror genres. We also have readings, an art show
and auction, sword fighting demos, a Writers’ Workshop, a dance Saturday night, and 24 hour gaming rooms.

Our theme this year is “The Resistance.” This means anything from nasty goblins spoiling crops and stealing babies, to
sparkly, happy, gossamer-winged, shoe-repairing advice givers. The yearly theme influences panel topics, invited guests,
decoration, and sometimes convention-wide events. We encourage guests, members, and attendees to take each year’s
theme to heart, and let it influence your preparation for MisCon each year.
MisCon 27 1
Welcome to MisCon 27!
From The MisCon People’s Movement:
Our theme this year is “The Resistance.” So, you’ll see all sorts of decorations and costumes
etc related to the idea of resisting the crushing grip of the Evil Overlords - possibly the Illuminati.
The Illuminati are not present at MisCon.
is a myth.
You know this.
Their existence
You will enjoy MisCon and ignore the
ridiculous notion of infiltration by THEM.
Uh, so help us. Help us to make your MisCon experience fun, safe and enjoyable. Mostly
safe. (Seriously, these guys are everywhere. Trust no one unless you know them well already.
So, have fun. Check out the art show (clear your mind and stare into the
pictures), play games (especially Iluminati), see what’s available in the Merchants room
(Buy.
Buy.
Stimulate the economy.)
Uh oh, someone’s at the door. I’d better get this emailed right away. Sure, this guy looks like
a UPS employee, they do that stuff all the time.
Before I sign off, there’s some critical information you need to know. Help, help! They’re
not human! He’s kicking in the door! Watch out! Trust no one! It’s wearing Justin’s face! Hide
anywhere you can!
Trust me.

Guests of Honor
JIM BUTCHER
Science Fiction author
While he was sick with strep throat as a child, Butcher’s sisters introduced him to The Lord of the
Rings and The Han Solo Adventures novels to pass the time, thus beginning his fascination with
fantasy and science fiction.[4] As a teenager, he completed his first novel and set out to become
a writer. After many unsuccessful attempts to enter the traditional fantasy genre (he cites J. R. R.
Tolkien, Lloyd Alexander, and C.S. Lewis, among others, as major influences),[4] he wrote the first
book in The Dresden Files—about a professional wizard in modern-day Chicago—as an exercise for
a writing course in 1996 at the age of 25.
For two years, Butcher floated his manuscript amongst various publishers before hitting the
convention circuit to make contacts in the industry. After meeting Butcher in person, Ricia
Mainhardt, the agent who discovered Laurell K. Hamilton, agreed to represent him, kick-starting his writing career.[5] However, Butcher and
Mainhardt have since parted ways; Jennifer Jackson is his current agent.[6] Butcher has written two series: The Dresden Files and Codex Alera.
Codex Alera has ended after six novels and The Dresden Files are still ongoing; he has also written a Spider-Man novel, entitled The Darkest
Hours, released on June 27, 2006. In addition, he contributed a short story for publication in My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding with Charlaine
Harris and Sherrilyn Kenyon, among others, released in October 2006. He has since contributed to the anthologies Many Bloody Returns in
September 2007 and My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon in December 2007.[7] In October 2008, he released another short story in Blood
Lite and a novelette, Backup, illustrated by Mike Mignola.
THERESA MATHER
Fantasy Artist
A professional artist since 1989, Theresa Mather creates fantasy works featuring a variety
of unusual creatures. Best known for her pieces painted on feathers and stone, integrating
her paintings with the natural colors and textures of the surface, Theresa draws much of her
inspiration from the world around her.
“When I need inspiration, I go hiking somewhere,” is what Theresa tells those who inquire. Theresa
and her husband Barry Short reside in Cedar City, Utah, where the many nearby national parks
– Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capital Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, and Grand Canyon - give her plenty of
opportunity to find inspiration.
Theresa is an artist who chooses to work outside of gaming and publication, exhibiting and selling her work at science fiction convention
art shows across the country. She enjoys the freedom this gives her to paint whatever she desires, allowing her paintings to be truly her
creations. She was active in the field of antique carousel restoration from 1989 through 1999, painting suites of large scale paintings for the
crestings of 5 antique carousels and decorative paintwork for a sixth.
While Theresa does have some formal art training, she suggests that those curious about this aspect of her background simply rent and
watch the movie Art School Confidential, which parallels her experience quite well. She’s learned that when it comes to creating art,
classrooms are no substitute for simply doing the work.
Theresa exhibits at over 70 shows each year and is the recipient of numerous awards, including Popular Choice Best of Show at ConJose, the
2002 Worldcon.

Patty writes books. You can find a complete list of titles
elsewhere. You probably don’t really care where she was
born [Butte, MT] or what her favorite animal is [horse].
The list of jobs she’s held over the years doesn’t tell you
as much about Patty as it does about which jobs were
available at various times in our past. I could fill pages with
various facts and tallies that detail the events of her life.
Instead, I’d like to tell you a bit about who she is.

Rob Carlos
As a two year old, Rob Carlos was writing and drawing on
any blank surface with anything that would mark it. He
loved superheroes and was particularly into Spiderman
–his mother once told me that she started taping huge
sheets of paper to the walls to protect them Rob kept
with his artwork, learning other media besides crayons
and markers, throughout his school years. In high school,
his creative nature led him into the world of Dungeons
and Dragons. When he wasn’t creating art, he was playing
with friends – which only fueled his imagination with more
interesting creatures to bring to life (and yes – he still plays
when he can) Rob started college in the 80s in New York at
RIT as an engineering major. However, art called him back,
and he transferred his major to fine art/illustration. He
did not feel like he was learning much and could not relate
to his instructors, so he left RIT and headed to Florida ,
where he found himself working as a graphic designer for
a local printing company. He was working there when I
met him – and still playing D&D with friends, drawing and
painting whenever possible. When the printing company
went bankrupt I told him to just concentrate on his art. He
started selling prints on his website and was asked to do
some paintings for the Robert Jordan Wheel of Time TCG.
In 2001, we came to the Seattle area, and decided that it
was for good. Rob has a fairly extensive web site and has
worked briefly with other forms of fantasy role playing
games. Recently, Add an Accent® has begun working with
Rob to offer eleven of his dragons as beautiful pewter
figurines. They have also started putting his artwork on
ceramic tiles, and have begun the line of “Stellar Dragon”
ornaments. In 2007, Rob started showing his work at local
Sci-fi & fantasy conventions. He continues today, though
“local” has become a thing of the past, Rob will continue
to draw and breathe life into characters, monsters, and
fantasy creatures for as long as they keep telling him
stories. May the stories never die.
Brenda Carre
Writing and drawing have always been Brenda’s bliss.
Now she’s retired from her day job as an art instructor she

Peter has been publishing short stories since 1993, game

novel, Second Paradigm, landed him several speaking
engagements on the topic of how to write time travel
and true nonlinear stories. He is currently playing in the
Steampunk sandbox as a writer at, and Art Director of, a
creative studio at www.FairyPunkStories.com.
This year he is a finalist for the Bram Stoker Award® for his
first Graphic Novel, ‘Behind These Eyes.’
Robin Walker
Robin learned how to draw while in the sciences because
basic skills and high standards were rarely taken seriously
in art schools, as is still the case today. Art is generally
perceived by art schools and the public as therapy or a
way to socialize while one’s hands are moving. The art
trends of the 20th century have been seldom more then
the sanctification of the inane. Do get her started on this
topic.

Major Events
Art Show
Room 300
Hours: FRI 12-7 / SAT 10-7 / SUN 10-3 / MON 10-4
Every year MisCon displays the work of both successful and aspiring artists. These
wonderful works are displayed, sold, and auctioned. MisCon sees art as its purest
definition: anything may be considered art. MisCon has never, and will never,
restrict the type of art accepted for the art show and auction. Art may contain adult
themes and/or be graphic, and these pieces will not be hidden. MisCon makes every
effort to display adult artwork in a tasteful way so patrons with small children may
self-censor.
Art Show Rules
Art staff are available in the art room at all times, so feel free to ask questions or
make comments. Artists entrust their work to MisCon staff, and MisCon takes this
responsibility seriously, so please:
•
Do not touch the art.
•
No photography or videos. Those seen doing this will be asked to delete photos
and leave all equipment with staff until the patron is ready to leave the art
room. Repeat offenders will be asked to leave the convention.
The Bidding Process
Each art piece has a silent bid sheet that lists information about the art, the starting
bid, and the direct sale price which is only available when no other bids are made.
Costume Contest
The Costume Pageant will be on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. Everyone is urged to
come and participate and to cheer their favorite costume entries. Entry forms are
available at the Costume department table next to the Registration tables until
5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Please turn them in by 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. No late
entries will be accepted. Poetic license will be freely taken if they aren’t legible; in
self-defense, make sure the announcer can read what you want said. Presentations
should be limited to 90 seconds. Winners will be announced immediately following
the Pageant. Awards and Prizes will be handed out at that time and you must be
present to win. If you want music during your presentation, you will need to provide
the music and machinery to play it on.
Prize Categories
Pets, Youth, Best of MisCon Theme, Best of Show, Judge’s Special Award
Rules (You know, stuff you have to do.)
•
Please be on time. If there is a change from the time listed on the entry form it
will be posted at the Costume department table.
•
No name tags on your costume (unless you are dressed as a rabid SciFi fan)
•
This is a family event in a public place. Keep it PG-13 (no nudity).
•
Absolutely NO fire, explosives or other hazardous effects, period. If you have a
question about an effect or prop, check it out with Security.
•
We ask that there be NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY during the actual contest.
There will be an opportunity to take pictures during the intermission period of
the show.
•
Live weapons MUST be peace-bonded and may not be drawn without prior
permission from the Security and Costume department staff.

Stay in character. How you present yourself is as important as the hours spent
developing your costume.
•
Practice before the contest, especially if you use music or other props. If you
wear glasses, and aren’t Harry Potter, spotters at the stage will be happy to
hold them for you, and help you on and off.
1) items with silent bid winners (one or two bids)—these will not be in the auction
•
When you first come onto the stage area, show the judges your costume, not
just the audience and be prepared to describe your character and anything
special about your costume to the judges.
3) items with three bids—these will be in the auction and will start at that third
bid price. The third bidder is still responsible until there is a live auction bid.
•
Don’t forget your shoes. Elves do not generally wear Nikes and Galadriel didn’t
even own cowboy boots. A great costume can be ruined by a lack of attention
to details.
Art Auction
•
A repair kit is handy. You might have to wait longer than anticipated, and bits
and pieces have a tendency to go south. Again, the spotters will be glad to
hold it for you during your presentation.
•
Just because it’s black, doesn’t make it a costume.
•
Keep telling yourself, “This is FUN!” It is!
the Art Auction. On Sunday at 4:00 p.m., three lists will be posted in the hall to let
patrons know the status of each art piece:
2) items without any bids—these will be in the auction and will start at the

Great Hall • Sunday, 6 - ?
Auction bid paddles will be signed out to auction patrons. Each patron with a
paddle is responsible for all pieces won by that number. Pieces that have a minimum
bid of $350 or more will be left in art room during the auction.
When you have won a piece, keep your paddle up until you are acknowledged by a
staff member.
Payment & Pickup
•
Art may be picked up immediately following the auction and during Art
Room hours. To make a special arrangement, contact Heidi Carstens-Bennett,
CthulhuBob Lovely, or Justin Barba.
•
Payment by cash or check is due at the time of pickup. PayPal payment is
accepted with approval from Heidi Carstens-Bennett.

hall Costume contest
Got stage fright? Do you like to dress up for the convention, but don’t like to enter
the Costume Contest? Do you look just like your favorite media or game character,
at least in the right light? Want to win money? Then this is the contest for you!
Come costumed for the con, stop by the Info table next to the Registration & get
your picture taken for the Hall Costume Contest. Your picture will be posted for
con-goers to vote on by cash votes. Convention goers shamelessly buy votes for
their favorite costume by donating cash. The costume that generates the most
votes, i.e. the most cash, wins half of the proceeds and the other half goes into
MisCon coffers to help promote fun happenings like this.
rules
•
You must wear your badge.
•
One photo will be taken for each costume entry person.
•
No nudity allowed—no costume is no costume
•
No dangerous or potentially dangerous props or special effects will be allowed.
•
All weapons MUST be peace bonded.
•
You may not enter the same costume in both the Hall Costume Contest and
the Costume Contest.
•
Costumes will be judged solely on visual presentation. There are no
requirements as to what hours costume must be worn or displayed. For
maximum exposure, it is recommended that costumes be shown as often as
possible. Remember that votes are donated by con-goers and depends on as
many people as possible seeing you and voting for you.
