Post it at www.baltimoreguide.com. It’s a harvest, all right. But think trash and weeds, not gourds and leaves. The theme for the citywide cleanup is “Fall Harvest,” and it’s slated to take place this Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. The harvest theme focuses not only on the collection of trash but on the transformation of dumping sites into gardens and pocket parks. Expect the emphasis of the day to be on alleys, lots or illegal dumping sites. City officials will recognize gardens that have been tended over extended periods of time, according to information distributed by the Department of Public Works. Volunteers can also find out how to revamp neglected or abandoned areas into gardens through the Adopt-A-Lot program offered by the city. Communities who have noted that they will be participating in the clean-up are listed here. (Note: Some events are being held on separate dates; check the information thoroughly for details): Friends of Carroll Park host a tree planting on Saturday, Oct. 18 beginning 9:30 a.m. Meet near the basketball courts, in the 1400-1500 block of Washington Blvd. Free grilled sausages, salads and a drink will be served to those helping to plant trees. Info: Gary Letteron 410-396-4369 or Gloria Pestridge 410-528-1121, [email protected]. Friends of Patterson Park host the Edge-A-Rama on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers will meet at the White House, 27 S. Patterson Park Avenue, and coffee, supplies and donuts will be provided. All volunteers will be edging as many of the historical brick pathways in the park as possible. (Note: If it rains, events will be canceled). Info/sign-ups: 410-276-3676, [email protected]. Hampstead Hill Association will meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18 in front of Hampstead Hill Academy, 500 S. Linwood Avenue, and volunteers will clean the surrounding area. Tools will be provided by the city, but volunteers may wish to bring work gloves. Info: Jean 410370-2644. Greektown CDC volunteers will meet on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Bank and Lehigh streets. Info: 410-327-3306. Messiah Lutheran Church on O’Donnell Square has an exterior clean-up on the East end of the Square around the church and Messiah Hall from noon-5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18. Volunteers can meet at the church office door (across from John’s Carry-out). Snacks will be provided. Info: Lee Hudson 410-342-4543, messiahodsq@ netzero.net. Note: The community associations listed above provided information on their activities for the citywide clean-up. Other communities may be participating but did not respond to requests to provide details. Residents who do not see their neighborhood listed above can contact local their community associations to see if they are participating. Other clean-up and neighborhood improvement activities are held throughout the year; the following have been submitted to the Guide’s Community Calendar: Canton Community Association/O’Donnell Square Stewards hold a community service day with Struever Bros. on Saturday, Oct. 25. Volunteers will help plant the flower beds and install the community service board beginning at 8 a.m. in O’Donnell Square. (Those who bought an engraved brick can look for it at that time). The city made it official last Friday—Mayor Sheila Dixon paid a visit to Locust Point to announce the city’s intention to pay for and build the first of eight dog parks over the next few years. Latrobe Park will be the first of these doggie playgrounds and construction should begin by April, with a completion date—not too optimistic, we hope—in August. About 100 two- and four-legged supporters came out for the event. The dog park will cost about $150,000. It will be 7,000 square feet and will incorporate a hilly terrain in the center surrounded by a flatter terrain. There will not be separate parks for large and small dogs. This is actually the second dog park in the city. A privately funded dog park was constructed in Canton four years ago. Next, some recreation for us two-legged beasts. Friday was opening day for the Mimi DiPietro Ice Skating Rink in Patterson Park. The rink is open now through March. Admission is $4, but a season pass is only $30 and gets you 10 admissions. Skate rental is $2. Public sessions are Russel BMW now offering MARYLAND’S ONLY Certified Fast Service. Call your friendly neighborhood service advisor, Gabe Rozzi Sr @443-341-8233 for more information or to schedule an appointment printed in the Community Calendar, or you can call 410396-9392 for a schedule. And don’t forget about the rink’s Halloween Spooktacular on October 31 from 7-9 p.m. Enjoy cookies and witch’s brew punch. Wear a costume and get $1 off admission. Last but not least, plenty of readers gave feedback on last week’s column. Here are a couple of I received one email from Will Brown, a Federal Hill resident and a participant in this year’s Baltimore marathon, the largest of the races that include Locust Point in their routes. Will seemed unconvinced that we experience difficulties in Locust Point during the marathon, or that those difficulties aren’t just part of living in the city. Here’s a good example of the frustration Locust Point neighbors feel. Cindy Curley told me of an exchange her husband had with a police officer who was blocking traffic during one of the many races that have come through the neighborhood. Cindy’s husband works at Harbor Hospital and is on call from time to time. He was called into work that day and the police officer would not let him through. He persisted until the policeman finally let him through during a break in the runners. I think someone who is on call for a hospital and gets called into work should not have to argue with a police officer, of all people, to get there. I am happy to say things are improving. This year the Key Highway Extension (the Loop Road) was open to get out of the neighborhood, something that was not true last year unless you left the neighborhood very early. Getting back in that same route was a different matter since Key Andrew L. Dowell 1901 Eastern Avenue 700 S. Conkling Street Baltimore, Maryland 410-327-1442 www.lillyandzeilerfuneralhome.com Bernard I. Pollock Attorney-At-Law • Real Estate Law - Deeds • Property Settlements and Financing Matters • Wills & Estates • Living Wills, Medical Instruction, Elder Law • Power of Attorney • Planning for a Nursing Home 3129 Eastern Ave. 410-342-6733 Highway was blocked at McComas Street. I guess we’re batting 500. Last year neighbors complained of not being able to get out at all. This year we could get out, just not back in. Maybe next year we’ll be able to do both. Will also mentioned that the race is over in our neighborhood by 10:30 a.m. so we only get locked in a few hours. Actually, the last runner came through after 11:00 this year, and the road blockades were not removed until after 3 p.m., but that may be splitting hairs. The point I make here is that people have other things going on besides the marathon. I know a lot of people love to come out and make a morning of cheering on the runners. I am actually one of those people. My husband, daughter and I have gathered with friends on the street clapping and cheering every year since I moved to Locust Point. But there are those who may have other responsibilities that take precedent over the marathon. They have jobs they need to be on time for. Some people who work the night shift would actually like to get back into their homes for some much needed sleep. Their kids have soccer and dance and swimming lessons to get to in the mornings. I did see improvements this year. I would like to see us push for more compromise and cooperation between organizers of events and ask the city for a requirement that event organizers, the police and the city give neighbors more notice when an event is planned in any neighborhood in the city. Everything is subject to compromise— who could possibly argue against compromising? UNIQUE DETAILING LLC WINDOWS & SCREENS REPAIRED 700 E. Post it at www.baltimoreguide.com. Patterson Park goes to the dogs on Saturday. And that’s a good thing. BARCStoberfest, the annual fund raiser for the South Baltimore-based Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter, runs 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. (The rain date is Sunday, Oct. 19). The event has pet information, vendors of pet-related items, crafts, a scavenger hunt, 50/50 raffle and a silent auction. And naturally, it celebrates man’s best friend and raises money for, and awareness of, BARCS. New this year will be a “Strut Your Mutt” walkathon to benefit shelter animals. (Pre-registered walkers who raise $40 or more will get a free BARCStoberfest T-shirt and the highest fund raiser will win an Apple iTouch). BARCS will be bringing adoptable pets to the park throughout the day, and will be able to help interested individuals begin the adoption process. It also has the event that everyone comes to see — the canine costume contest, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Costumes will be judged in four categories: Most Original, Best Baltimorean, Matching Dog/Human, and Best Last Minute. (Note: Those who want to participate in the contests must be signed up by 1 p.m.) There is a $15 registration fee per dog in each category (costumes as well as other contests held during BARCStoberfest), with all proceeds going to support the dog park. Information on the event, including a timetable for when various competitions will take place, as well as registration forms for the Strut Your Mutt event, can be found at the BARCS website, www.baltimoreanimalshelter.org. This is worth it. by Lynn Williams [email protected] Note: Have a comment on this article? Post it at www.baltimoreguide. com. I had no intention of reviewing Scittino’s Pizza & Pasta this week. Not that I have anything against Scittino’s, mind you. I had actually never even heard of Scittino’s. As my daughter was long overdue for a dinner out, I thought of Luca’s, the Italian place in Locust Point with connections to Highlandtown’s iconic Matthew’s. But Homecoming was looming, and the perfect dress had not yet presented itself, so we headed north instead, to Loehmann’s and, I thought, Victor’s. Victor’s was Harbor East even before there was a Harbor East, a waterfront restaurant with a great view and calamari so good it earned a shout-out on “Homicide.” I remembered that Victor’s had relocated to a Timonium shopping center—no view, but I assumed the seafood would still be worth the trip. But when we reached said The Baltimore Guide shopping center we discovered that Victor had sold out a few months previously. So Scittino’s it was. Scittino’s has a shopping-center-bistro vibe that will feel familiar to anyone who has been to chains of the Strappazza ilk. With its bold wall graphics depicting Italian foodstuffs, its stone-look tile floor and its case of deep-dish pizzas up front, it’s definitely a cut above your standard pizza and subs joint, but looks more like a place Scittino’s Pizza & Pasta Timonium Crossing, 2080 York Rd. Open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mon.-Sat., 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sun. Phone: 410-308-0620 Our dinner for two: $43.78 for a casual slice than for serious dining. We were surprised, then, by a very good meal, better than some we’ve had in Little Italy itself. Admittedly, the Caesar salad ($5.95) was not a promising herald of things to come. It was coated with way too much creamy dressing, without a hint of the promised Parmesan. The mozzarella caprese ($7.75) was wonderful, though; the tomatoes were Self Storage & RV, Boat, Vehicle Storage All Units Ground Level Drive Right Up • No Inside Hallways Professional Storage Specialist FREE Features Available: ✓All Ground Level Storage ✓Boxes & Storage Supplies • Incoming Fax ✓Gate Area Video Recorded ✓Free Incoming Fax Service •Work Area and ✓24 Hr. Best of all, though, was the mozzarella, which was the snowy, homemade kind. In honor of Victor’s, but without great expectations, I ordered the calamari. Wow— it was perfect. Perfectly tender, perfectly crisp, perfect light batter, perfect ratio of rings to tentacles, perfectly huge serving for $7.75. My husband was thrilled when I presented him with the leftovers. My daughter’s one exception to a meatfree diet is clams, which she will happily eat fried, chowdered, or, as at Scittino’s, sautéed with olive oil and garlic and served with Parmesan over linguini ($15.95). This version had an edge over most, as it was made with baby clams, tiny and delicate, instead of the usual chopped kind. As Scittino’s bills itself as a pizza place, I figured I’d better order some. The spinach white pizza ($12.95 whole, $2.95 slice), which involved a thin, tasty crust, mozzarella and ricotta cheeses and just the right amount of garlic, was the kind of dish that the Nutrition Action people would label “Food Porn.” But fat grams aside, it was a winner. Also in the don’t-tell-yourcardiologist category was the tiramisu, a decidedly rich version of this usually airy dessert, topped with a thick layer of chocolate-dusted mascarpone. If the name sounds familiar, you may hail from Catonsville, where Scittino’s Italian Marketplace is a longtime fixture for those seeking authentic groceries, deli and takeout. The new place is owned by a cousin of those Scittinos, and from what we’ve sampled of his cooking, next time we’ll try something more ambitious from the specials board. And maybe another pizza. The Latest Dish… With downsizing the order of the day, don’t expect small plates to go out of fashion anytime soon. Tapas, mezze, and other mix-and-match appetizer menus really do provide the best bang for your dining-out buck. The newest place to get your small-plates fix is Tapabar, which has arrived at 413 High Street in Little Italy (formerly Café di Roma). Owner Carolina Llaguno is a proponent of the “farm to table” movement, and uses produce from Maryland growers. Organic, fair-trade wines from Chile are featured, and can be sampled at Wednesday’s wine tastings. For information, call 410-223-3020. Your nose knows when gas is leaking. And this Friday, a Federal Hill gallery will bring them together for a night of creative celebration. School 33 Art Center, located on Light Street, will host a bash for the arts from 6-8 pm.The party will close out the gallery’s current exhibition of photographs by Baltimore native Andy Cook, and will also kick off a weekend of art studio tours. Local hip hop duo AK Slaughter and ‘50’s-inspired indie rock outfit The Art department will play a free outdoor show during the party. “It’s a party, so we have a little more freedom to experiment. We are trying out a new song we have never played before,” said Aran Keating, a member of AK Slaughter. It’s hard to imagine AK Slaughter in a setting that didn’t welcome experimenting. The group draws from reggae, pop and even Bollywood on its high-energy tracks – and almost always gets the crowd dancing. on Friday, guests can work up a sweat by dancing in the street, and then go inside for last look at Cook’s new photography exhibit. Cook’s show, called “Scenes from Long Roads,” features 12 new images. Most are landscapes of Baltimore, novia Scotia, Japan and California. The closing of his show kicks off another big event for School 33, the open studios tour weekend. The free weekend of selfguided tours invites visitors into local artist studios. It’s a chance to purchase local art and talk to artists about their work. “We are creating synergy between the artists and the neighborhood. We are trying to develop an arts community, and we are happy to be a part of it,” said John Hughes, exhibitions coordinator for School 33.. For us it just makes sense to do dIy spaces, ar t galleries and par ties. We seem to fit really well into that environment, where it is community based, rather than actual venues. That is where we star ted and that is where we have been continuing. At this thing, it’s a par ty, so we have a little more freedom to experiment. We are trying out a new song we have never played before. what is the song called? I wanted to call it “Cold Compress,” emily wanted to call it “Clap Attack.” you can decide. you can name it. Are you two dating? A lot of your songs hint that you are. In our songs, a lot of emily’s solo tracks, she sings about her experiences. They are very feminist-oriented, about sex and stuff. I think we inevitably do a lot of play back and forth, like in our song about getting harassed in the mall. There is a lot of inherent back and for th, and mirroring each other. It’s really just about me and her doing whatever we want. www.bmore ive.com Paramount Theatres is showing newly restored versions of The Godfather parts one and two at the Senator Theatre until Thursday. Only five theatres in the nation are showing the rerelease. If you can’t make it, check out the new DVD. is restored, hits the Senator Theatre By B R i A n D AV i S “Does this look like a rash to you?” here’s our film reviewer’s take: If you’re into lists (and let’s face it, most of us are), then you’re guaranteed to find The godfather on any Top 50 Films of All Time list. It is iconic, it is enduring, and it redefined the gangster genre. What makes it so powerful? Why is it considered one of the best movies ever made? Well, the violence and subject matter are certainly a good place to start, and one glance at the cast is enough to startle: Marlon Brando. Al Pacino. Robert duvall. diane Keaton. James Caan. Who couldn’t get wrapped up in an epic Mafioso flick starring these cinematic greats? And then there’s the narrative, with Michael’s (Pacino) chilling character arc, falling (or rising) from national war hero to murderous crime lord. Watching his father gunned down, his brother assassinated while trying to defend his sister from an abusive husband, and his wife murdered accidentally in an attempt on his own life, the pleasant, innocent Michael Corleone slowly hardens into a cold killer. And peppering the film along the way are corrupt police captains, cars exploding with beautiful women inside them, family betraying family, and decapitated horses. It makes for a hell of a ride. But what really sets The godfather above every other player in the league is its richness of theme. opening with Michael’s sister’s wedding, You read right. Free oysters* . Sundays 12-4 pm. and ending with the execution of her husband, the film not only allows but dissects the contrast and codependency of light and dark. The dedication to family versus the willingness to kill others’ family; the refusal to sell drugs because of their social effects versus the ambivalence towards violence and corruption; charisma versus coldness; these are all merely different sides of the same coin. Writer/director Francis Ford Coppola deftly intercuts between the bright wedding outside (family), and the dark office inside (business), declaring from the opening scene that light and dark, family and business, they are opposite yet also the same. And to hammer this point home, he ends the film with a similar intercutting technique, alternating shots of Michael’s nephew’s baptism with shots of his ordered killings. The godfather remains a powerful, beautiful, enthralling film, and to watch it in the theatre is an offer that can’t be refused. Earn Over 100% 24 The Baltimore Guide REAL ESTATE MAILBAG Benny L. Kass Inman News DEAR BENNY: We bought a second home a year ago where we’ve spent very little time (a few days here and there) until recently. We recently discovered a number of problems including an inadequate radiant floor heating system -- we can’t get heat past 60 when its 30 or below outside (this alone may cost $25,000 to fix (seller says he never had a problem); the cooktop vent exhausts indoors in violation of manufacturer specs; the window wall is bowing, and window cracking indicates a load-bearing structural issue; and leaks are visible at almost every rafter-to-wall seam ... we can see outside! What are our rights in this situation? We paid $1.5 million for this 2,200-square-foot home. --Vikki DEAR VIKKI: You paid a lot of money and noted that you had an inspection. Did you see the house yourself before you bought it? Have you discussed the situation with your home inspector? He may have some culpability if he missed all of those things. The seller claims that he never had any of the prob- VERONICA KIMMITT GRI, ABR 443-690-6740 Office: 410-675-5500 www.fellspointrealestate.com lems you described. Most sellers say that; sometimes it’s true, and sometimes it’s not. But proving the truth in a court of law is not easy. Furthermore, the fact that you discovered the problems a year after you took title will be a defense that the seller’s attorney will raise if you file suit. The seller will take the position that if there are problems in the house, they occurred after the seller sold the house. You have to do a lot of investigation. Talk to neighbors -- did they hear your seller complain about various things in the house? Check with local repair companies to see if they remember working on the house before you bought it. If your state has a “seller disclosure” law, read the disclosure carefully. If you believe that you can prove that the seller misrepresented the condition of the house, you may have a stronger case based on the erroneous statement. I tell all of my clients that litigation is expensive, time-consuming and uncertain. Sometimes the better course is to accept the fact that you bought a lemon and pay the moneys to fix it up. DEAR BENNY: We sold a rental condo in 2001 via a tax-deferred 1031 exchange replacing it for another rental. We moved into the home in December 2006, making it our primary residence. How long do we have to live in the home in order to qualify for the Internal Revenue Code 121 exemption? --Mike DEAR MIKE: Because you obtained the replacement property as part of a 1031 (Starker) exchange, you are not eligible for the up-to-$500,000 exclusion of gain until five full years have passed. If, for example you acquired the property on Aug. 1, 2001, you could not claim the exclusion until Aug. 2, 2006. Clearly, you meet the five-year test. However, you 960 FELL ST - BELT’S LANDING #510 - Drastic reduction! $299,000. Best buy in Belt’s Landing! Waterview, balcony, garage parking for 2 cars, 2BR, 2BA. Harbor House Rental To w n h o m e s DEAR BENNY: I am a 43-year-old teacher who bought a home with my mother 12 years ago. Recently my mother has developed health problems, which caused her to lose her part-time job. Her pension does not allow her to live on her own. Due to the loss of income she has decided to declare bankruptcy. She owes more than $30,000 on credit cards. I do not want her credit to affect mine or to lose my home. Selling at this time is not an option. Would the best course of action be to have her sign the house over to me? If so, what do we need to do? If not, what do you suggest? --Rebecca DEAR REBECCA: My first suggestion is that you immediately retain a local attorney who understands bankruptcy. I am not a bankruptcy attorney, but do know that some transactions may be set aside by a bankruptcy trustee if they are made within a certain period of time. For transactions between relatives, the trustee can look back one full year. This is known as a “preference in bankruptcy.” Furthermore, there are tax consequences if the house is transferred to you. Is there any way that you can assist your mother with her credit-card debt? Have you or your mother talked with the credit-card company? They may be willing to arrange a payment plan, so that your mother will not have to file for bankruptcy protection. Benny L. Kass is a practicing attorney in Washington, D.C., and Maryland.
