BACKGROUND >
HAMMARKULLEN
CITY CENTRE
Bredfjäll is part of Hammarkullen, a suburban area in northeast Gothenburg on the west coast of Sweden, that belongs to
the city district of Angered.
14min
It was conceived as a part of the Million Home Programme in
Sweden and was expected to host about 300,000 people in
the future, but economic decline in the 1970s put a damper to
this plans.
10,4km / 10min
The developments are scattered in the woods and have poor
connectivity with each other.
Construction works in Hammarkullen started in 1968,
with 2670 apartments built eventually and a plan area of
123,000m2 and completed in 1973. A

PILOT PROJECT
It is poorly connected to the City center of Goteborg as compared to other outlying areas in the larger city area.

GREEN SPACES
The building are separated from each other with extensive
green spaces which are an impressive connection with nature,
but are rather undeveloped.
Managed by Graflunds and Bostadsbolaget
Number of apartments: 810 (690 graflunds, 120 bostadsbolaget)
Average rent/74 m2: 5255 kr (bostadsbolaget)
Official number of inhabitants (born before 1998): 1629
Average income: 137.200 kr (half of Gbg as a whole)
Inhabitants with other native language than Swedish: 57%

Its notable that Hammarkullen itself is circled by woods that
create a feeling of isolation from other surrounding areas.
There are pedestrian paths through the woods that lead to other suburban areas nearby, like Hjällbo, but they lack enough
lighting and probably seem unsafe.

MEDIA COVERAGE
Hammarkullen is very often potrayed by the media as an immigrant ghetto with issues of social unrest and a gang haven.
AREA PLAN 1:2000
Good media coverage however include the annual celebration
of spring, the Hammarkullen Carnival, that takes place in late
May or early June.
