015 has seen the fifth competition of this kind here
at SNG Barratt. We received entries from all
corners of the World over the summer, and the
competition was certainly fierce.
Images were judged on number of photographic
qualities; their technical skill including sharpness,
compositon and lighting, their creativity and their
originality.
The votes were close in the top 5, at times being neck
and neck, but Damien Nally overtook at the final bend to

at SNG Barratt.
Runners up included a stunning XK120 photographed
by Rudolf Couturier of Germany to take the title for the
Classic category. Rainer Zottmaier’s Series 2 E-Type set
against a striking caslte backdrop was the landscape
winner. A wonderfully lit ‘under the bonnet’
image submitted by Stuart Steinberg from the USA and
Brian Spencer’s XJS restoration image from Australia
topped the remaining two categories.

WORKSHOP DIARIES...
Here at SNG Barratt, we want to be sure that we are providing
the highest quality parts to our customers.
That’s why we fit and test parts that we supply and manufacture to
our own fleet of Jaguars, including our fully-restored 1964 E-Type
Series 1 4.2. All of our cars have benefitted from the wide range of
upgrades and replacement parts that we sell and, in some cases,
make right here in our Bridgnorth workshop...
With the cold weather on the way, we have seen an
increase in the demand for heating products, namely
the E-Type Series 1 Heater Box. These are
manufactured on-site by our skilled workshop team,
from sixteen different pre-cut blanks. In total, an
impressive fifty operations are needed to complete
the box, and we take a look here at some of the key
stages.
The blanks are produced by precise laser cutting
technology to ensure 100%
accuracy, and these are then
formed to shape by folding,
rolling and pressing on hand
operated machinery. The
main body or matrix housing is formed first, using a

brake press (see image 1)

highest quality products leave the workshop to be
put into stock for our customers.
Once the matrix 1housing is formed, the sides and
fixing brackets are folded before the process of
constructing the box can begin. The fan box
assembly is formed on pyramid rollers (see images 2
and 3) and on specially made press tools, ensuring
the profile is correct to original specification.
A key component to the heater box is the main inner
flap attached the to the matrix housing, which
controls the intake of hot and cold air. This is formed
using a ‘wired-edged’ technique (see image 4), with
hand tools and learned skills
to form the steel around a
3/16” bar. Traditional metal
working skills such as this
are a key part of our
manufacturing process.

When it comes to the main
construction of the heater box, this is done using
a bespoke jig with dimensions taken from our very
own E-Type, to ensure that the finished product is
100% correct to the original part. Each pre-formed
steel blank is inserted into this jig and then the32
panels are spot welded together.31

Brazing of the mounting brackets and fan box is a

process that we have adopted as an addition to the
original production of the E-Type heater box. Using
a gas fluxer here creates an almost invisible joint
withour compromising on the strength and durablity

of the joints (see image 5).
This particular heater box, part number C17271, fits
E-Type Series 1 models; both 3.8 and 4.2. Also
produced in-house is the V12 equivalent as part
12 including the fan box - C33380).

Once assembled, the boxes are cleaned up and
smoothed ready for quality control
checks before

being disassembled and sent out for powder
coating. Upon their return they are reassembled and
given a final check before being approved into stock.

SOVY DIARIES...

During the early 1990’s SNG Barratt purchased Sovy, a
company responsible for making a range of electrical
items for many British motors, including Jaguar.
Now Sovy are assembling and/or rebuilding an even wider range of parts right here at our Bridgnorth headquarters. In this issue, we take a closer look into the
production and benefits of one of our popular ignition products; the V12 Distributor Conversion Kit.
The Opus ignition system is fitted to the E-Type V12
as original equipment. For a while, we felt that this
system was in need of a modern approach to
improve reliability.
Our objective was to design and build a system into
the original components, retaining the outward
appearance of the original whilst making sure some
clever things were going on behind the scenes! We
began this task around ten years ago, trying out
various processes and componenets to find the best
results. The end product is something we are very
proud of. We now manufacture and supply two
versions of this kit; one for carburettor models and
one for fuel injection E-Types.
The first stage is to assemble the distributor; a two
wire pick-up type and containing a trigger board.
New internals are fitted and a new distributor cap
put in place; a module tester is then used to ensure
no faults are present before the full conversion kit is
constructed (see images 1 and 2). These distributors
are modified specifically for either the HE of the HEF
kit and are designed to work in harmony with the
other components. Therefore, they are not available
to purchase as stand-alone products.

The components that make up the conversion kit, bar the ignition coil, are all manufactured right here in our
Sovy workshop to the highests standards. When it comes to assembling the amplifier, this is all done by hand
or on hand-operated machinery (see images 4 and 5). Modern components are built into the amplifier case,
with the only visible difference being that out amplifier gets its trigger from a two wire pick-up rather than the
original three. Every amplifier is individually tested after completion.
The amplifier and matching ignition coil require a 12V supply, so the next stage in the process of designing
this exclusive kit was to redesign the ballast unit to cater for this, whilst retaining the tachometer output
terminal which allows the instrument to work correctly.
Once all elements are individually made and tested, the kit as a whole is put through an extensive testing
process using PicoScope software (see image 3), where we ensure that all components are working well
together and no abnormalitites are present. The testing facilities
allow us to check the vacuum advance and trigger boards before printing out an ignition trace and trigger board trace
to confirm correct operation.
Over the years, components have been remade
so that we are today in the position that
virtually no parts from old units are used in
the cnstruction of these kits. In the very near
future, it will be possible for us to
create these entirely from new
components.
As mentioned earlier, two versions of this
kit are available and both are
assembled here in our Bridgnorth
workshop. Part number DAB113HE
fits carburettor V12 E-Types whilst
part number DAB113HEF is the kit of
choice for fuel injection models.
We can also supply a made-to-order
long lead version of either of the
above kits for customers with original
amplifiers fitted to the body who wish
to keep the same body fitting.

are manufactured and supplied
exclusively by SNG Barratt. You can

manufactured in-house by our skilled workshop and Sovy
teams. Featured in this article are a few key products from
our extensive heating range.

Heater Matrix
The heater matrix in your vehicle is like a small radiator
that acts as a heat exchanger, with an inlet and outlet to
allow the heated engine coolant to flow through it, then
the blow motor blows air through the matrix, resulting in
heated air in the cabin.

A little insight into what we have been
getting up to, and what you can look
forward to in the coming months.
Moving forward in 2016 ...
This year has seen some major changes to our Bridgnorth
headquarters, including the addition of our newest building to
extend our warehouse capacity and enlarge our vehicle testing
facilities, as well as significant improvements to our warehouse
system.
2016 will continue to see SNG Barratt develop and progress, with
plans to expand our workshops, which will increase the
production of parts for later models.. Our in-house autojumbles
have allowed customers to pick up some great finds from our
stock containers. These containers are now being cleared to
make space for another new building which will double the size
of our current workshop facilities.
Our Sovy department is also getting a
facelift, which will allow us to
manufacture a wider range of parts for all
Jaguar models.

After its inaugural show in 2015, the London Classic Car Show is
back (18th-21st February). Another very popular event is Techno
Classica at Essen (6th-10th April), which is well worth the journey if
you have never visited before.
We will be exhibiting at both of these events, so come along to
