FY 16 Year in Review
Since 1997, the WinterKids Passport has helped Maine kids get off the couch and into the
snow! The Passport opens doors to an exciting array of fun and healthy winter activities for the
whole family.
While the winter of 2015-2016 is not one that will be
fondly remembered by snow lovers, the Passport
continued to provide opportunities for 1,556 Maine
children to try a new winter sport. The Passport’s 50
participating areas provided opportunities for Maine
families to develop healthy lifestyles and to become
lifelong winter outdoor enthusiasts. Some partner areas
held WinterKids Days, gaining new customers by
providing deep discounts for the whole family.
Our 2016 Passport Family Survey indicates that the
Passport is doing its job! More Maine kids and families are
getting outside & active, thanks to this highly effective
and beloved program!
1,556 Passports were distributed throughout Maine.
83% of WinterKids Passport users skied/snowboarded at least once using the Passport.
23% of Passport holders tried a new snow sport for the very first time using their Passport.
60% of the Passport families said that they increased their ski days in 2015-2016 as a result of
having the Passport.
67% of parents agree that the Passport helped their child become more active in the winter;
and these parents believe that this will continue after their child is out of the program.
Here at WinterKids we are always looking to improve our programs to better serve WinterKids
families and partners. We asked parents about the future of the Passport.
Here’s what they said:
88% of respondents would be interested in an online version (a downloadable app or
e-mail) of the WinterKids Passport.
83% would be interested in additional Passport offers via a log-in.
“My daughter really enjoyed using her Passport this year. It was given to her as a Christmas gift
and she has gotten a lot of use from it.”
Stacy, Lewiston
“My wife and I skied periodically as kids, but once we had a family; we skied very little.
Without WinterKids, we would have not been able to teach our kids how to ski.”
Ryan, Scarborough
“We were able to ski at places we typically do not visit, which was great. We explored more
Maine mountains and found some we really like.”
Mike, Readfield
“I think with the Passport he has found something that he normally wouldn't have tried
because of the expense - something that he is actually finding he is really good at and has been
encouraging his friends to do it too.”

WinterKids Challenge in Maine & New Hampshire Schools
Data Summary 2015-2016
The WinterKids Challenge is an innovative physical activity program based on WinterKids’ Guide to
Outdoor Active Learning (GOAL). The Challenge encourages preschool and elementary school
teachers to incorporate fun, outdoor activity into their winter lessons. In order to meet the Challenge,
teachers must 1) facilitate a minimum of three active, academic lessons (or a 6-week unit for
preschool) and 2) provide qualitative and quantitative data following each outdoor experience.
Teachers can adapt WinterKids lessons to their classroom needs, with each lesson lasting thirty
minutes to one hour.
The 2015-2016 season marked the sixth year of this program, and the first time teachers and students
in New Hampshire have joined the Challenge. 338 teachers (219 new this year and 119 returning)
and 5,187 children joined the WinterKids Challenge this school year. This data reflects 33% of
participants (111 teachers completed program surveys via Survey Monkey). This year, Challenge
students and teachers were outdoors and actively learning for more than 7,780 hours (466,830
minutes)!

Enhanced early education!
Half of the teachers modified the lessons in some way, adapting the
program to work for different age groups and physical settings. Most
teachers made small changes—incorporating materials on hand, or
adding additional concepts to expand the lesson. “We included

Hello, D24 Rockstars!
I cannot thank you enough for participating in a hugely
successful 4th annual WinterKids Downhill 24! This
event exceeded our wildest dreams, and we are thrilled
to be able to reach even more kids in the coming year.
From T-Rex on the mechanical bull to megasize
mountain donuts to skiing under the lights for the first
time in history to Sugarloaf nearly running out of beer
(!), we had a blast---and by all accounts, you did too!
Below you will find links to: event sponsors, WMTW
Channel 8’s event coverage, team prize winners,
the final All Sports timing results, our FB photo
album, and the awesome video Sugarloaf created.
You helped us raise
$222,000 for
WinterKids programs.
Incredible!
Did you know?
• 383 people participated in the challenge?
• Sugarloaf’s mountain ops team worked day and night with Pike
Industries to place the lights on the trail?
• The top 3 teams collectively raised nearly the same amount as
the whole event in total last year?
• The top fundraiser racked up $ 9,680 in donations? (Jeff Zachau
is the man to beat!)
• 17 people raised over $2,000 each individually?
What does all of this mean?
It means more kids will get outside and active more often in the winter (23,410 this year!). It means
thousands of kids in the poorest, most rural corners of Maine will get outside with their teachers during
the school day in Washington, Penobscot, Aroostook, Somerset and Franklin Counties. It means hundreds
of kids new to winter will ride inflatable rafts down Portland’s Payson Hill at WinterKids’ Welcome to
Winter. It means hundreds more families from all across Maine will get out at the mountains, the tubing
parks, the skating rinks, and the cross country trails to learn new winter sports and build healthy, lifelong
habits. It means enhanced WinterKids’ staff, board, and volunteer capacity to reach more kids. Thank you!
On behalf of the WinterKids staff and board,
thank you for making this year’s event fun,
successful,
and
impactful
for
WinterKids.
We are looking forward to 2017, and you can be sure
we will let you know as soon as registration opens!
Yours truly,
Julie Mulkern
WinterKids Executive Director

THE PROBLEM
CHILDHOOD OBESITY IS INCREASING
28%
of kids are overweight or
obese when they enter
Kindergarten in Maine
and New Hampshire.*
2X
Childhood obesity has doubled over
the past 30 years for preschoolers and
adolescents and more than tripled for
children aged 6-11.**
CHILDREN ARE LOSING THEIR CONNECTION WITH NATURE
Children in the U.S. average
just 30 minutes a week of
unregulated time outdoors;
however, their weekly electronic
media exposure is almost 45
hours a week.**
Unstructured outdoor activity is
down by half from the previous
generation.**
The average American child
can recognize 1,000 corporate
logos, but can’t identify 10
plants or animals native to his
or her own region.**

2015 ANNUAL REPORT
Celebrating 15 YEARS of helping children develop
healthy lifelong habits through education
and fun, outdoor winter activity.
15 years of moving, learning,
and exploring!
2014-2015
Board of Directors
In the last 15 years, WinterKids has reached over 75,000 Maine kids through innovative outdoor
programs for families, schools and communities. Wow!
Eric Kolben, President
UBS
In 2015, we built upon this success by reaching more kids than ever before! We also created a new
strategic plan that will ensure WinterKids future sustainability and growth, including: an overhaul
of the WinterKids Passport to help more families get active outside in the winter; expansion of our
popular school program, The WinterKids Challenge, in Maine and New Hampshire; and, a change in
venue for our signature winter fundraiser, The Downhill 24, to Sugarloaf in 2016. WinterKids will
light up the ‘Loaf for the first time in history! All of this helps us to get more kids and families outside
more often, improving health, increasing self-esteem, and enhancing connections to the outdoors.
Thank YOU for helping us to achieve our mission.

the WinterKids Board of Directors for 7
years, and served multiple roles on the board
including 2 years as President. The Peisners
are avid winter enthusiasts, and firmly believe in connecting kids who would otherwise
not have the opportunity to try winter sports, recreation, and competition. Through a
collaboration with Portland Nordic and Portland Recreation, the fund supports up to 10
children each year with transportation and equipment to participate in a 12-week cross
country program at the Riverside Golf Course in Portland.
INAUGURAL EVENT – The 1st
Annual It’s a Wrap! at The
Rack celebrated 15 successful seasons of
WinterKids! Our spokesman, Seth Wescott,
hosted the event at his restaurant, The
Rack, at Sugarloaf. Seth posed for countless
photos with happy winter kids, sharing their
collective love for all things winter! Thank
you, Seth!
2015 - 2017 STRATEGIC PRIORITIES
To achieve our vision for the future, we have set the following strategic priorities to guide
our work:
Secure WinterKids’ future financial and organizational sustainability
Clarify and successfully market the WinterKids brand and demonstrate our impact
Increase participation in all of our programs, activities, and events
Restructure the WinterKids Passport to increase utilization and revenue for programs
