40th Anniversary Celebration Weekend 1976 - 2016 Friday 15, Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 July 2016 40th Anniversary Celebrations 2016 is a special year for the University as we celebrate 40 years since our foundation. We invite you to celebrate with us at our 40th Anniversary Weekend on Friday 15, Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 July at the Hunter Street Campus where we will have a great programme of special events and entertainment for the whole family. An Evening with William Shakespeare Friday 15 and Saturday 16 July, 19:30 to 22:30 The University of Buckingham presents ‘An Evening with William Shakespeare’ in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the birth of our greatest playwright. Students and staff will be performing Shakespearian songs, sonnets, readings and music in the Radcliffe Centre, and then the cast and audience moves outside for a special performance of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in the gardens of Ondaatje Hall by candlelight. ACT 1 - 19:30 to 20:30 A selection of Shakespearian songs, sonnets, readings and music, in The Radcliffe Centre, Church Street, Buckingham INTERMISSION - 20:30 to 20:50 Refreshments will be served in the Radcliffe Centre ACT 2 - 21:00 to 22:30 A special performance of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ Ondaatje Hall Gardens, Church Street, Buckingham Please bring rugs to sit on (or small deckchairs if you have restricted mobility). Is your Coffee and Walnut Cake a delectable delight? Do carrots jump for joy in your Carrot Cake? Are your Flapjacks flipping delicious? Do your Viennese Whirls twirl? If the answer is YES; then you need to enter the ‘Buckingham Bakes It’ Competition on Friday 15 July. (Open to all staff, students and their families) Just bake your favourite cake(s) and bring it/them to Willow Bank by 11:00 on Friday 15 July. It can be one large cake, small individual cakes, tray bakes or cookies. They will be judged by three enthusiastic cake connoisseurs, and prizes will be awarded. There are three categories: • Best Cake • Best Cake (10 years old or under) • Best Decorated Cake All cakes will be kept and used for the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at the Fete on Saturday 16 July. The University of Buckingham Medical School Open Afternoon Saturday 16 July, 12:00-15:00 The University of Buckingham Medical School are opening their doors to the public and showcasing the newest Medical School in Britain. Visitors will not only be able to take a sneak peak at our clinical skills labs and anatomy rooms, but also have a go with some of the simulation equipment used in teaching our students. We will have local GPs, current students and teachers all available to chat to about Buckingham’s role in shaping the future medical landscape of the UK. Milton Keynes Hospital will also be represented by doctors and facilitators who will discuss the trust’s role as a university hospital. If that hasn’t already piqued your curiousity, we will have a special guest appearance from our canine friends, the Medical Detection Dogs, and a ‘Kiddie’s Medical Corner’! Celebration of the University of Buckingham’s 40th Anniversary Saturday 16 July, 19:30 The Man Who Knew Infinity Drama/Biopic (109mins) (12a) Starring: Jeremy Irons, Dev Patel, Stephen Fry, Toby Jones, Jeremy Northam, Kevin McNally Directed by: Matt Brown This film is based on the untold, true story of Srinivasa Ramamujan, one of the great minds of his generation. He was a self-taught mathematician who was admitted to Trinity College, Cambridge, just before the First World War. His genius for mathematics took him from the slums of Madras to working with theorist G H Hardy, who initially thought that his approach was a hoax. Spurred on by his mentor, Ramamujan overcame racism and the rigidity of academia to revolutionise the field with his startling theorems, which he attributed to divine inspiration. Duck Race Duck Race Sunday 17 July, 12:30 ( judging for the ‘Best Dressed Duck’ will be at 12 noon) Prizes for the best dressed duck and for the race winner. Barbecue and bar available and picnics welcome. Lots of children’s activities and family fun. The race will be followed by Caribbean Music by Mighty Jamma Steelpan and the Chancellor’s Cup Sports Competition. Ducks are £2.00 and available from the University Bookshop and Santander on Hunter Street. All proceeds go to the Alumni Annual Fund Charity. Take a tour and talk to the doctors, scientists and researchers involved in this ground-breaking work right here in the heart of Buckingham. Find out how they are developing new treatments and drugs to improve insulin sensitivity and harness the power of plants and alternative medicine to combat these common diseases. All welcome.
