Our class is cocky… and we know it. We
have walked through the hallways with our
noses high, entitled, pushing everyone else
out of the way since we were freshmen. There
never really was an awkward transition period,
upperclassmen looked up to us even though
we were shorter. We are the Class of 2008.
Reflecting back on my years in the lovely
green roofed East Lyme High School,
specifically with this year’s senior class, I
find that I have never heard so many people
talk about themselves. At the same time,
never in my life have I met so many people
with something to say.
We officially won Spirit Week two years
in a row, we screamed with joy during these
highs, and came together during the lows.
As one, we rallied after the loss of a class
president, and mourned the loss of a great
friend. The memorial fund for Taylor Emery
is one of the most aggressive fundraising
efforts East Lyme High School has ever
seen. Out of the ashes, the Class of 2008
has risen...and risen high.
Our class has some of the school’s
greatest athletes, scholars, cooks, debaters
and artists—breaking records, raising AP
scores and accepting awards left and right.
We have an impressive cumulative GPA,
and still have the time to build houses for
those in need or rock out on our guitars.
We set our standards high, and we have
had a history of exceeding them in every
way imaginable.
So yes, we are confident, but we have the
right to be. To the members of the Class of
2008, congratulations, may your hard work
and efforts continue to reward you wherever
you choose to go. To everyone else ... you
have some big shoes to fill.
Stef and I began the school year with a
goal to become the voice of the ELHS student
body. This led to me sitting at my computer
week after week pondering potential topics
for editorials that would not just be the voice,
but shout for the change we needed to see in
our high school. 20 editions later, I realize
the reason behind the problem: there is, in
all honestly, not much that is wrong with
East Lyme High School.
For four years we woke up at the crack
of dawn, walked through that set of double
doors and were educated. And yeah, there
were plenty of things to complain about
throughout the course of the day, such as
the horrible food in the cafeteria or the fact
that Day 1 is always harder than Day 2. Then
again, it is our job to rebel and/or criticize
anything institutional, especially regarding a
place at which we spend six hours and fortyfive minutes a day.
But as we leave, the thought of never
walking these halls again brings about a
feeling of fondness. These were our first
stomping grounds. Inside this building we
were educated in academic lessons and life
lessons. ELHS brought friends together. And
even those classmates who we saw everyday
and will never see again, they have in some
way have touched our lives.
What you will not get, however, at any
other school in the country is a whistle blown
at any act of PDA, or the entire swim team
parading around the cafeteria in Speedos.
Or a Day 1 Morning Show that incorporates
the song Funny Bear into every episode.
Or a faculty that performs Thriller for the
entire community.
We are truly products of East Lyme High School
and because of that, we should walk across the
stage this friday with our heads held high.

Tomorrow we graduate.
Think of it, next year we are all going in
separate directions, across the country. East
Lyme High School will never be the same.
There will be no more circles at lunch, or
cheesy pickup lines. I can’t fall asleep and/
or make fun of liberals in Mr. Sanford’s AP
Government class anymore. The computer
marked John in Mr. Beale’s room will be
lonely now, as my trash will not be renting
the space next year. Ms. Hardy will have one
less conservative to deal with. I can no longer
go on the morning show with my deep,
masculine voice and bring the student body
the news of the school and or get in trouble
by Mr. Place. I can also no longer use my
diabetes as an excuse for leaving Madame
Sidorova’s French class. And Mr. Mahon will
have to find a new kid to anger him. I can no
longer hang out on the basketball bench, or
pretend to practice at track. Ms. Lil won’t be
there to solve my problems. No more Pete My
Baby. I have to go by my real name instead of
Hands, or Tucan. We can’t wear T-shirts that
say Free Biko and maybe Cody. There will be
no more rapping in front of 800 people and
I’m pretty sure I won’t have two escorts that
beautiful when I become president.
Instead, we are now going out into the
real world, Class of 2008, and honestly I
don’t think the world is ready for us.
To leave you all I would like to quote
the greatest president, Ronald Reagan, by
saying, “Life is one grand, sweet song, so
start the music.” So let’s play that Rascal
Flatts (man I really wanted that R.Kelly jam...
Just kidding.)Well, let’s pack up our bags;
our legacy at East Lyme High School is over.
My next goal is to become Mr. Lyndon State.
So MC, Botinni let’s head up to the Green
Mountain State and begin that college life.
It is over.
Tomorrow, arguably one of the greatest
times in our lives comes to an end. No more
will we have to wake up at the crack of dawn,
park at the grocery store and hope to not get
caught, drag ourselves into first block praying
to get past George without a tardy slip.
I am going to miss this someday, however,
but for now I am ready to go. The rest of our
lives have begun, and it is about time.
For the past four years I have worked hard,
sometimes not as hard as others, for this one
day, graduation. I do not regret anything in
regard to the way I have spent my past four
years. I am thankful for all of the teachers that
have helped me along the way, especially my
man Mr. Beale! Without Mrs. Kelly I don’t
know if I could have made it through freshman
year. Mr. Roberts, thank you for all you have
done and for your support and guidance to
me throughout the past four years.
Going to college next year all I can hope
for is that I am ready and that East Lyme High
School has gotten me to the point where I am
as prepared as possible, and that my troubles,
triumphs, and lessons learned will guide me
through the years to come. I am going on
to play football and baseball at Wesleyan
University. I won’t have my wingman Steve
Gray. I will have a whole new team, and it
is a little scary to think of rebuilding these
relationships. High school sports have to
end, but I will never forget my teammates
and all that we have accomplished.
I am proud of our class in that we won
Spirit Week junior and senior year. The way
our class rose up and came together that week
was one of the best moments of my high
school career.
So in the words of Lost’s Desmond, “See
ya’ in another life brotha’.”

When I was little, I had this concept that
once you grow up, you have no memory of
what your life was like before. I was terrified
to leave preschool for kindergarten, because
I had it in my head that I would never be
able to remember any of my former friends.
Surprise, surprise: 14 years later, I’m still
friends with Lexie Whipple, who I met in
my Creative Playschool days. I also clearly
remember getting in a big fight with her about
dress-up clothes.
Though I understand that the future won’t
erase the past, I do wonder how things will
change. What if my current friends and I grow
apart? How different will Future Me be from
who I am today? Thoughts like these can be
overwhelming, like many things regarding
that big, looming thing called The Future
often are. But we all have to realize that while
not knowing what may come is not always
the greatest feeling, this is how life goes and
it’s going to be okay. Whatever happens in
each of our futures is entirely up to us and
we should look forward to it with excitement
rather than backward with mourning.
My point is, while we are all about to start
a new chapter in our lives, we’re not starting
a new book. Now it’s time to part ways and
discover what lies ahead, but don’t be so sad
and so scared that you can’t appreciate the
present. If the people in our lives today are
people we really and truly care about, we
will keep them close to us. We will all change,
hopefully for the better, while retaining the
foundation of who we are today.
Once we stop fretting about how the past,
present, and future will link together, we can
start focusing on turning the future into the
present. So, stop worrying in time to enjoy
the end of the school year. You only get to
graduate high school once, so have a blast!
Kate Eberle
Mollie Teeter
For me, senior year has been 180 days full
of groans and complaints regarding school.
I’ve spent my time doing the dirty work of a
senior who made the mistake of taking four
AP courses and applying to ten colleges,
falling asleep at night to the sweet thought of
the coming June.
Now it’s finally here and it doesn’t seem real
to me. It even scares me a little. High school
has somewhat prepared us for this transition
with baby steps such as getting your license
and earning an increasingly later curfew, but I
think that we are all still a little scared, going
out into the world without the protection of
our parents, friends and teachers. So what do
we do now? We build.
I like to relate going away to college to a
young bird leaving her mother’s nest to make
her own. Similar steps must be taken to start
new in each scenario.
Step One: Build a nest, and make sure that
it’s comfortable for long-term living.
Step Two: Find a food source.
Step Three: Make friends with neighboring
birds; you never know when you’ll need a
favor or perhaps just some company.
I want to think that if I follow these
simple steps, I’ll be well on my way to being
a successful college student. The truth is,
though, that the ride is hardly bump-less,
and there are always unexpected storms that
your nest may not protect you from. But then
again, thus is life. If things were perfectly
planned out, life would lose all mystery
and we’d be living like Stepford wives.
As Deas Vail’s lyrics go, We’re putting our
lives in this, falling over ourselves ‘til it all
makes sense. All we can do is put our all into
everything we do, hope for the best, and smile
as much as we can to try make our days as sunny
as possible.

With the school year
ending, the student body loses
more than just
graduating seniors
by Valerie Ferdon
After serving five years as
the principal of East Lyme High
School, Mr. Roberts will be
retiring after graduating the Class
of 2008.
On Wednesday, June 11, a
school-wide farewell party was
held in the Commons. Each class
president gave Roberts a book,
a very appropriate gift for the
former English teacher.
During his last year, ELHS
was featured in U.S. News
& World Report’s Best High
Schools 2008 Search, placing
as one of only 505 schools in
the entire country awarded a
silver medal.
Roberts plans to continue
to
work
in
education
after his retirement. He is
considering teaching college
courses or writing and doing
consultation work.
