briar cliff preview
2008 gpac football team previews
by: Jared Bodammer
Don’t ask what happened a year ago. Briar Cliff players and the
program’s new coaching staff prefer to discuss the present and the
future instead of the team’s winless 2007 campaign. Head coach Tom
Rethman came to Briar Cliff following seven seasons as the offensive
coordinator at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Rethman,
who will also serve as the team’s offensive coordinator, inherits a
squad’s whose strength could be defense. The Chargers return eight
defensive starters including a linebacking corps which could be one
of the league’s best. Leading the young defense will be interior
linebackers Jarrod Makovicka (junior) and Eric Bolin (sophomore).
A pair of senior linebackers (Billy Mousel and Taylor Schumacher)
provides the defense experienced bookends. Offensively, the team
returns a pair of senior quarterbacks in Kyle Gerdes and Lane
Claussen. The duo combined to throw for 1,453 yards, last year. The
team also returns its leading rusher from a year ago in sophomore
David Smith (443 yards, four rushing touchdowns) and junior wideout
Luke Roder, who returns after missing all of last season with a knee
injury. In 2006, Roder led the team with 36 receptions, 648 receiving
yards and nine touchdowns. Several new offensive additions are also
expected to make an immediate impact. Rethman, his staff and the
team’s 80-plus member roster will begin laying a new foundation
for the program in August. Rethman has said that the team will be
focused on improving with each play, each practice and each game.
The Chargers will open the “Tom Rethman Era” with a non-conference
game at Grand View, Aug. 30.
Concordia Preview
by: Wade Tracy
The 2008 Concordia University, Nebraska football team will have
to rely on the strength of a experienced defense as the offense will
have to overcome the loss of two of the premier running backs in the
GPAC, JaMaine Lewis and Jeff Neujahr. Concordia’s offense will
be anchored by an experienced offensive line led by second team
All-GPAC tackle Andrew Sunderman, and honorable mention center
Dustin Ehlers and guard Tom Schutte as the Bulldogs look to create
more balance on an offense dominated primarily by the run game
the past two seasons. On the defensive side the Bulldogs return an
experienced D-Line with senior, first team All-GPAC nose guard Matt
Baller, and senior, honorable mention end Brock Simonsen returning.
The Bulldogs will have to fill holes with the departures of All-GPAC
selections at safety: Brett Mertens, and linebacker: Trent Laune.
Dakota Wesleyan Preview
by: Matt Higgins
The Dakota Wesleyan University football team heads into the 2008
season full of optimism after a strong finish to the 2007 campaign.
DWU returns 21 out of 22 starters from a team that finished 2007
with the school’s first-ever three-game winning streak in Great Plains
Athletic Conferencee play. Head Coach Brad Pole, now in his fourth
season, led the Tigers to a 4-6 overall mark a season ago. Seniors
Daniel Wysong (LB) and Kyle Meier (DL) are coming off All-GPAC
seasons and return to lead the DWU defense, which returns all 11
starters. The Tigers’ defense also returns four other players who
received All-Conference honors: defensive backs Eric Adolph and
Jordan Gau and linebackers Ryan Deibert and Dane Carlson. Twoyear starter and All-Conference Honorable Mention quarterback
Jon Doom (Jr.) is back under center for the Tigers, and he’ll direct
an offense that returns 10 starters from a season ago. Four other
All-GPAC players join Doom on offense: receivers Bubba Slaba and
Jesse Ayers and linemen James Hansen and Zach Zephier. Special
teams will be an asset for DWU this season. All-Conference Second
Team punter Nick Tolsma and All-Conference Honorable Mention
kicker Sergio Leon also return to give DWU one of the most potent
kicking games in the conference.
Dana Preview
by: Shad Beam
Palpable excitement surrounds the 2008 Dana College football
program. With 18 returning starters, the Vikings are a sure bet to
improve on a 4-7 record in 2007. Dana will continue to take to the air
this season with the “River City” offense says Coach Bill Danenhauer.
Senior Marcus Sladek (Omaha, NE) returns to lead the River City
offense. Sladek, slated to start his fourth season, passed for 2,454
yards and nine touchdowns in 2007. Mark Schlueter (SO, Omaha,
NE) and Andrew Hawley (SO, Lincoln, NE) return as the top targets
for Sladek. Protecting Sladek are a pair of all-GPAC selections from
2007 in Clayton Timm (Council Bluffs, Iowa) and Marcus Gorges
(Omaha, NE). Otis Seals (Omaha, NE) returns as a two-year starter.
The strength of the Viking Fury defense is in its linebacking corps.
Chris Vacek (Omaha, NE) and George Drinnin (Omaha, NE) will be
looked upon to lead the deep Viking linebackers. Brandon Terry
(Omaha, NE) and Davis Pattee (JR, Shelby, Iowa) will lead the Dana
defensive back field. Anchoring the defensive line for the Vikings are
Nate Weathers (JR, Omaha, NE) and Robert Foran (SR, Schuyler,
NE).

Tigers, under Head Coach Matt Franzen, return 16 starters, 9 on offense

on both sides of the ball. The offense will be led by three-year starter
J.R. Artozqui at quarterback and Second Team All-GPAC offensive
lineman Jake Ryba. The defense will be led by Second Team All-GPAC
defensive lineman Seth Styskal and linebackers Josh Warren and
Hondo Fanning.

program in 2007, are expected to make up the 2008 roster that will
open play on September 6 against Northwestern in Sioux Center.
The Dordt College football program began in October 2005 when
the Dordt College board of trustees directed the athletic department
to implement a football program. Heavner was hired in March 2006
and the first recruit for the program was signed in January 2007.
Bill Bauer and Wade Whites were hired as offensive and defensive
coordinators in March of 2007. Heavner has had coaching stops at
East Central University (Oklahoma) and Missouri State University.
Hastings Preview
Nebraska Wesleyan Preview
The Hastings College Broncos are looking to continue their climb back
to league prominence in 2008. After a winning campaign in 2007,
the Broncos are optimistic that they can continue to improve. The lofty
goals are fueled by a good group of returning starters—seven on
offense and seven on defense. Offensively, look for junior receiver
Maurice Mansfield, senior running back Dan Bargen, sophomore
running back Nick Grummert, and senior quarterback Dayton
Edwards to play key roles for the Broncos. As they enter the third
year in the 3-5 scheme, the Bronco defense shows promise as well.
Key returners include sophomore linemen Jake Mueller and Pete
Botkin, and junior linebacker Mackenzie Hemje. Juniors Aaron
Chochon, Jeff Klug and Mike Cardenas anchor an experienced
secondary. Another key returner is sophomore kicker/punter Gavin
Rodriquez who had an outstanding freshman year in 2007.
After posting back-to-back 7-win seasons for the first time since
1991, the Nebraska Wesleyan football team is looking to take the
next step in 2008 and return to the NAIA playoffs for the first time
since 2000. Head Coach Brian Keller, the winningest coach in NWU
history, enters the 2008 season optimistic as he returns 13 starters
from the 2007 squad that finished 7-3 and ranked 22nd in the NAIA.
On offense seven starters return, highlighted by All-GPAC running
back Jordan Stutzman who had 11 TDs last season. Four starters
return on the offensive line and that looks to be a strength for the
Prairie Wolves. NWU must replace three-year starter ZacRabe
at quarterback. Junior Matt Hegge saw action in all 10 games
last year and looks to fill the void as the signal-caller. On defense,
five starters return from a unit that posted three straight shutouts
in 2008. All-American senior safety Phil Schroer led the country in
interceptions for the second straight season and is poised for another
run at All-America honors this season. Two other starters return in
the NWU secondary to make that the strength of the defense. The
Prairie Wolves must replace three starters at linebacker and will look
to some young players to step up right away.

The Midland Lutheran College Warrior football team will try to
make the old look new again in 2008. After a couple of seasons
with the Warriors running a spread type of offense, look for MLC
to mix things up with a new look in its offensive scheme. Terence
Maahs, a senior quarterback from Lincoln, will lead the Warrior
offense, helped out by senior multi-purpose back Jinho Tohara.
MLC will rely on their big offensive lineman, led by senior Randy
Donner. Defensively, the Warriors welcome back Brian Hanson, an
all-conference linebacker, for a final year of play. Hanson will lead
the Warriors, who have experience at linebacker, in 2008. MLC will
have to replace their starting defensive tackles, but look for high
energy and inspired play on the defensive side of the ball. Coach
Casey Thiele will enter his second season guiding the Warriors, and
with the additions of Kelly Lee at Offensive Coordinator, and Antoine
Manning as Defensive Backs and Special Teams Coach, MLC will add
new wrinkles to all facets of the game, which look to be productive
this season.
Northwestern Preview

The Red Raiders are coming off another fine season in their traditionrich program. They finished the 2007 campaign with an 8-2 record
and were ranked 15th in the final NAIA rating, just missing out on the
NAIA Postseason Championship Series. It was the fifth consecutive
year that Northwestern finished the season ranked in the top 20. The
2008 squad returns 33 letter winners from last season, including 16
starters, eight on both offense and defense. Head Coach Orv Otten,
beginning his 14th season as the head coach, is 98-42 (.700 win
percentage) overall and needs just two victories to reach 100 in his
tenure at NWC. His teams are 53-21 (.716) in the GPAC. Coach
Otten and his staff will bring over 90 players into preseason camp
which will begin Friday, Aug. 15.
Morningside Preview
Sioux Falls Preview
Morningside returns 16 starters and is coming off four consecutive
NAIA post-season appearances. The Mustangs, who have advanced
past the first round of the NAIA Playoffs each of the past three
years, will feature one of the nation’s most prolific passers in Ian
Gilworth, who threw for 3,623 yards and 36 touchdowns and set
a Morningside record for completion accuracy at 65.5 percent
last season. The Mustangs include an impressive cast of receivers,
including Antuan Bloom, Beau Kildow, and Blake Anderson, who all
had over 50 receptions, plus return leading rusher Pete Lewis and
touchdown machine Tyler Childress, who has rushed for a schoolrecord 24 touchdowns in his Morningside career. Mike Buckley
intercepted seven passes last season, including a school-record three
in one game against Northwestern for a Morningside defense that
set a school record with 31 thefts last year. Ryan Oetken added five
interceptions to go along with a school-record 17 pass breakups.
Linebacker Bret Nickolite was the Mustangs’ big play defensive
specialist with 17.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including six
quarterback sacks, to go along with two blocked kicks.
The No. 2-ranked University of Sioux Falls football team will look
to make its third straight appearance in the NAIA national title
game this season. USF is the defending GPAC football champion
after going 10-0 in the league last fall. The Cougars claimed NAIA
National Runner-Up honors in 2007 (13-1 record) after advancing to
their second straight title game before losing, 17-9, to Carroll College
(Mont.). That loss snapped a school record 27 straight wins by the
Cougars. Overall USF has won 28 straight home games and 63 of its
last 64 conference games. USF head coach Kalen DeBoer is entering
his fourth season. DeBoer has compiled a 38-3 overall record and
a 9-2 postseason mark, including winning a national championship
in 2006 the second in school history. The 2008 Cougars return 11
starters. At the quarterback position, USF is faced with the tough
task of replacing 2007 NAIA Player of the Year Chad Cavender
(Redding, CA.). Cavender finished his career 27-1 as a starter and
will be succeeded by Lorenzo Brown, a transfer quarterback from
North Iowa Area Community College. Top Cougar returnees include
senior running back Erik Cimpl (Dante, SD), who was second in the
GPAC in rushing with 1,081 yards and was also a 1st team AllConference selection. Junior defensive back Trevor Holleman (New
Holland, SD) also returns after leading the team in tackles (71.5) and
interceptions (5) in 2007.
