T lso notice how our posts are bent outward, making room for a wider slat at the top and graduating smaller to the lowest slat. The wider top slat gives more comfortable support to the shoulder area. As it had been for centuries, London became the center for new design in Windsor chairs. An area twenty miles west of London, near Chiltern Hills, became a small chair-making center by midcentury. Furthermore, Windsor chair building had spread throughout England by the 1770s as provincial craftsmen familiar with Windsor form capitalized on the distance between the local consumer and the metropolitan market. T urning our focus now to design; solid back splats were added to Windsor chairs in the 1740s. Under the influence of high-style designs by Thomas Chippendale, by the 1760s back splats were ornamented with pierced openings. Earlier chairs had shaved stick legs, but later legs were turned and tapered. By the 1760s, most chairs had turned rear legs with cabriole front legs. By about 1775, the front legs were connected by the addition of curved “cow horn” stretchers, usually with knee brackets to the back legs. As design advanced, bent arm supports were used. Thus by circa 1760 there was a substantial transformation from the earliest forms to a more refined pattern suited to chairs intended for indoor as well as garden use. n addition to the high-back chair, the round-top chair originated in the 1750s. Our chairs are inspired by the designs in vogue during the 1770s. Changes came afterward. A chair made by Frederick Walker in Sherwood Forest in the early 1800s exemplifies later changes from cabriole legs, cow horn stretchers and bent arm posts, to turned legs, stretchers and arm posts. A Windsor chair is built from a shaped and contoured wooden plank. It is drilled from the top and bottom to anchor posts, usually with spindles above and legs below. The upper parts are secured into the seat, and are separate from the leg frame. They are unlike other styles such as ladder-back or Queen Anne chairs which have continuous legs and back-post frames. B r i e f H i sto r y o f t h e B e r i a h G r e e n Fa n - ba c k W i n dso r Chairs eriah Green was born November 22, 1774 and married Elizabeth Smith in December 1793. Beriah Green enters our consideration because of the distinctive Windsor chairs he built circa 1797-1800 while living in New London County, Connecticut. This craftsman was apparently influenced by the work of Ebenezer and Elijah Tracy, also of eastern Connecticut. 1002A 1001 C h a i r s , Ta b l e s , a n d Ca b i n e ts B H i g h - ba c k W i n dso r A r m e d C h a i r # 1 0 0 2 A 21 3⁄4 ” w x 17 3⁄4 ” d x 41 3⁄4 ” h Fa n - ba c k W i n dso r S i d e C h a i r # 1 0 0 1 17 1⁄2 ” w x 17 3⁄4 ” d x 39 1⁄4 ” h Inspired by Beriah Green ca. 1797 in New London County, Connecticut reen’s Windsor chairs are of individual character. Most striking are the ornamental spindles in the back, which were almost unknown in fan-back chairs at the time. These beautifully compliment the spool, ring and taper turnings on the back posts as well as harmonizing well with the flared baluster legs. G T 26A 26 Pa d d l e - Ba c k W i n dso r # 2 6 20” w x 17” d x 40” h Pa d d l e - Ba c k W i n dso r A r m he overall design is tied together with a full-bodied, deeply carved, yet graceful seat. Note particularly the knife-edge on the front as it slopes sharply under the seat and the artistic way the angle flows around the side and gracefully changes to the more upright form in front of the back posts. Other notable features are the socketing of the chair legs inside the seat plank, the grooveless spindle platform, the distinctive lines of the seat scoop which contribute so much to its comfort and the small wooden pins on each side anchoring the side posts. # 2 6 A 21” w x 17” d x 40” h ntrigued by this graceful composition, we determined to reproduce this chair for discriminating furniture buyers of our time. We are convinced that we have been faithful to the original design Beriah Green crafted two hundred years ago – a chair that has not been surpassed in beauty or comfort since. Examine closely the features mentioned above and experience the comfort of this well-thought-out design. Then if you are as fascinated by this classic as we are, we invite you to commission several examples for your home. This resemblance to bamboo became popular in England in the mid 1700s. Direct trade with the Orient stimulated bamboo work among the English. This in turn spread to America after the Revolution when Samuel Claphamson emigrated to Philadelphia in 1785, where he crafted “bamboo chairs.” T 39A 39 B i r d Ca g e W i n dso r A r m C h a i r s , Ta b l e s , a n d Ca b i n e ts #3 9 A 20 1⁄2 ” w x 17 1⁄2 ” d x 37” h B i r d Ca g e W i n dso r # 3 9 18” w x 17 1/ 2 ” d x 37” h 58 58A T h u m b - Ba c k B amboo legs and rungs were used on high-back chairs and the new bow-back designs introduced to Philadelphia in the mid 1780s. But more design changes occurred within a few years as legs were changed from three to four-sections, and leg supports changed from H-frame to box-frame. By 1800 the style changed as round-back chairs which had been in fashion for fifteen years yielded to square-backs which prevailed until the 1850s. These new-fashioned bamboo Windsors, sometimes called “Squair-top,” often had two sturdy side posts with seven vertical spindles capped by single or double bows in the crest. Seat designs varied, but generally had decorative grooves carved in them. On arm chairs, turned arms became popular as they replaced scroll-design arms. # 5 8 18” w x 17 1⁄4 ” d x 36 3⁄4 ” h T h u m b - Ba c k A r m # 5 8 A 20” w x 18” d x 36 3⁄4 ” h The Thumb-Back is referred to as a “pierced slat back Windsor” circa 1820. Notice the easy movement of our deep dovetailed slides. Our pedestal tables are equipped with geared rails that are smooth running, and assure you that the top is centered on the base, regardless of how many leaves you use in the table. We build our table aprons with a gap to accommodate the natural expansion and contraction of solid wood tops. The gap is covered with a moulding. Most extension tables can store two to four leaves inside themselves between the slides. (Eency-Weency and Round tables are too short for leaf storage.) Four leg style tables use a sturdy mitered corner block in each corner. This strong bolt-on system can easily be removed for moving. Each chair leg is trimmed to make the chair sit solidly and equally on all four legs. This also protects your flooring. Wooden wedges soundly pounded into the spindle, posts and leg ends give you the security of a well made Windsor. After being glued and wedged, the excess is cut off and sanded smooth with the top surface. The contrasting grain assures you of the authentic design. Solid Hardwood steam bendings, as used on this continuous arm demonstrate the grace and beauty of Windsors. The art of steam bending is yet alive in America today! Our catalyzed varnishes give you durability without sacrificing good looks. Just wipe up the spills after dinner and be satisfied that no damage has been done! Leaves without aprons save storage space when they are not in use. Leaves with aprons are available if you desire the fully enclosed look. A typical leaf order may include 1 or 2 apronned leaves so that the table can be extended permanently without a gap in the apron. Yes! We deliver door to door and set up the furniture in your rooms. 30 y S o l i d H a r d wo o d Sta i n C o lo r s Furniture O T n addition, solid hardwood furniture can be repaired if damaged because there is no veneer or artificial surface that can be scraped or rubbed through. I onal variations of reddish, brownish and paler shades are common in the red oak wood species. The heartwood is always darker than the sapwood, and it may have a very fine or broad pattern. Dark brown mineral streaks are common in the cherry heartwood. The sapwood is pale and almost white in color. Cherry wood color deepens and grows richer with age.
