Division Names Product Support Specialist
Ohio’s Dependable Dealer
To Maximize
Customer Uptime
The Environmental Division has named Dean Hatem
as Environmental Product Support Specialist. As part of
an initiative to further raise the bar on customer support,
Hatem’s primary focus will be to work directly with customers who need assistance, and facilitate warranty claims.
“Any time a customer experiences technical difficulty
with a product, I am the direct line of contact and
am responsible for resolving the issue to the customer’s
satisfaction,” he said.
“Dean has spent enormous amounts of time training on,
studying and working on our equipment in the field,”
said Tim Smith, Environmental Division Sales Manager.
“As Environmental Product Support Specialist, Dean
will be raising the bar on customer service by helping us
expedite resolution of customer issues. In some cases,
he’s so familiar with the equipment he can even walk a
customer through a fix over the phone.”
With two decades of experience servicing equipment,
"I can work with the operator running the equipment and
explain what adjustments need to be made to optimize productivity."
Dean Hatem; Environmental Product Support Specialist, Columbus Equipment Company
Hatem will be available to consult on, or troubleshoot,
any equipment not running to expectations. “I can
work with the operator running the equipment and
explain what adjustments need to be made to optimize
productivity. This is part of operator training—at the
startup stage of new equipment—and saves the customer
having to schedule, and pay for, a future service call."
As the Environmental Division’s go-to technician,
Hatem is also a trainer, and valuable resource, for all
Columbus Equipment Company technicians working on
Environmental Division products at any of the company’s
ten statewide branches. He will also develop existing
parts systems and procedures, in order to increase availability.
Hatem has worked on environmental equipment since
the division started in September 2007. “Ever since I
worked in a sawmill during high school, I’ve been
passionate about forestry equipment. This division has
an incredible product line, along with a committed,
fast-growing customer base. I’m stoked to be a part of
helping manage that growth, and serving customers as
they grow their businesses,” he added.
In the new role, Hatem will continue to attend
factory training to stay ahead of the equipment and
technology curves, and will interface with Columbus
Equipment Company manufacturers, relaying customer
feedback on product development issues.

Counter Conce
To Disrupt For
Barko is bucking a trend by introducing a new track feller buncher/harvester in the 45,000-lb weight
class. “Some of the larger manufacturers have vacated that market,” noted Bruce “Sparky”
Enstrom, Barko’s director of forestry sales & marketing. “But we see a need from our customers
for this size carrier.”
The Barko 240 meets expectations with maximum tractive effort of 65,833 lbf.,
and swing torque of 50,787 ft-lbf., making it the industry leader in its size class.
In 2012, the company set about designing a new, stateof-the-art machine from the ground up, concentrating
on including all the specifications customers want. Key
concerns were keeping the weight at 45,000 pounds and
providing high drawbar pull and lots of swing torque.
The Barko 240 meets expectations with maximum
tractive effort of 65,833 lbf., and swing torque of 50,787
ft-lbf., making it the industry leader in its size class as well
as being comparable to other large-size class machines.
All indications are that Barko has a winner on its hands.
“We showcased it at the Great Lakes Logging Congress,
one of the largest shows in the country, in early September,”
Enstrom said. “The 240 received a tremendous amount of
attention, positive comments and feedback.
The 240 offers a number of advantages over larger
alternatives,” he noted. “It has a lower price and it
offers better fuel economy. The 240 is only 9-feet-4inches wide, so it is compact enough to do select cuts
or row thinning where bigger pieces of equipment can’t
operate. And at 45,000 pounds, there’s no need for an
overweight permit.”
Those features appealed to Mike Heiss, owner of
H&H Land Clearing of Middlefield, Ohio, who ordered
the machine after demoing it. The Columbus Equipment
customer was the first in the world to buy a Barko 240.
“I like that it’s a lighter machine so it’s easier to move
around. It worked as good as a bigger machine, and I’m
looking forward to the improved fuel economy,” Heiss said.

The Barko 240 has several unique features
designed for ease of maintenance. Instead of tilting,
the cab slides forward 36 inches to
provide access to the swing motors,
swing bearing, engine and
boomfoot. The company has a patent pending on the
design. The machine also has a single, large gull
wing on the right side of the machine that provides
a large working platform when it’s tilted down.
Another unique feature is the air-knife system, in
which an air compressor blows air across the windshield in place of a wiper. The system doubles as an
air compressor for tools when a tech is working on
the machine.
“I like that it’s a lighter
machine so it’s easier to move
around. It worked as good
as a bigger machine.”

harvesting. It offers a 21.2 foot reach without attachment, and the D-5 undercarriage has an impressive
26.5 inches of clearance.
In addition to logging and land clearing, Enstrom
believes the machine’s 220-hp engine will make

it attractive to operators in the biomass field. “There’s
a real place in the biomass industry for a hot saw, and
horsepower is important with a hot saw. I think we’ll
really see the market open up for this size
of carrier.”
