Medina Calendar 2015-16
Medina Central School District A Message from the Superintendent Dear Parent/Guardian, Welcome to a new school year! I am excited to start the 2015-16 school year in the Medina Central School District. The Mission of our school district reads, “All students of the Medina Central School District will reach their full individual potential: academically, emotionally, physically and socially.” I share our Mission with parents to communicate our school district expectations. One thing is certain- our district needs ongoing support from all stakeholders, including families to reach our mission. We ask that you collaborate with our school district to help ensure our students will be college and /or career ready upon graduation. This partnership between schools and families will also strengthen our school district, as we all want what is best for all children attending MCSD. Parent involvement and engagement is one of the six tenets of effective schools. As a district, our goal is to ensure our parents are engaged and involved in our district initiatives. Please know that you are always welcome in our schools, district office and all extracurricular events. Together we can, and will build a school district of excellence. Student achievement will remain our focus in 2015-16. As a district, we continue to make great strides in the area of academic achievement including improved graduation rates and improved passing percentages on many Regents examinations. This improvement cannot be made in isolation, but through a strong partnership between our district and the community. Our teachers and support staff have worked tirelessly to bring about effective changes in curriculum, instruction and assessment practices. The Medina School District is moving in a very positive direction and we must continue this momentum as we focus on the future. This calendar publication is designed to familiarize you with the programs, policies and services of the Medina Central School District, as well as provide you with a quick reference for scheduled meetings and activities throughout the year. For the most current information and news, refer to the District website at www.medinacsd.org. You can also like us on Facebook as we use social media to communicate the many good things going on in our district. If you have any questions during the year, please do not hesitate to call my office at (585) 798-2700. I look forward to a great school year! The Code has been revised to comply with the New York State Dignity for All Students Act (DASA). The Dignity Act was signed into law on September 13, 2010 and took effect on July 1, 2012. This summary describes some of the important aspects of the Code of Conduct. Who? The Code of Conduct applies to all students, District personnel, parents, and other visitors when on School District property or attending a District function. When? The Code of Conduct was revised and approved by the Medina Central School District Board of Education on August 21, 2012, and revised and approved on August 12, 2014. Where? The provisions of the Code of Conduct apply to activities taking place on any property or in any building owned or leased by the District, including District-supervised school buses. The Code also applies at District-sponsored extracurricular events. Why? The Medina Central School District is committed to providing a safe and orderly educational environment where students receive and District personnel deliver quality educational services without disruption or interference. The Medina Central School District Code of Conduct contains provisions regarding: • • • • • • • • • • • • • Student rights and responsibilities Appropriate conduct, dress and language Security and safety of students and personnel Prohibited student conduct Disciplinary measures to be taken for incidents involving illegal substances, weapons, the use of physical force, vandalism, violation of another student’s civil rights, harassment and threats of violence Student removal from a classroom, District property or function for substantially disruptive behavior Compliance with state and federal laws relating to students with disabilities Law enforcement notification for Code violations which constitute a crime Juvenile delinquency petition or Person In Need of Supervision (PINS) petition Referral to appropriate human service agencies Minimum suspension periods for students who are violent or who repeatedly are substantially disruptive or substantially interfere with the teacher’s authority over the classroom Visitors to District buildings Dissemination and revision of the Code of Conduct A complete version of the Code of Conduct is available for review in each of the District’s school buildings, in the District Office, One Mustang Drive, Medina, New York, as well as on the website: www.medinacsd.org. Attendance Policy It is a well-known fact that being a good student starts with good attendance. In fact, good attendance is important in school, work, sports, club activities, and any other aspect of life. Having good attendance lets others know that you are responsible and take your work seriously. That is important to being a good student, a good employee and a good citizen. In order to do well in school, you must first make sure you are in school on time. Therefore, in keeping up with New York State Law, the Medina Board of Education has adopted an attendance policy, which applies to all students grades K through 12. Who is required to attend school? According to New York State Law, children must attend school between the ages of six and 17. A student who turns 17 years of age during a school year must continue in attendance until the end of the school year. What happens when a student is absent? The student must present a signed note from the parent giving the child’s full name, date, days of absence and reason for absence on the day of return to the designated person responsible for attendance in that building. What is an excused absence? Excused absences include personal illness, illness or death in the family, religious observance, medical appointments, quarantine, impassable roads due to inclement weather, approved college visits, required presence in court, military obligations, approved educational trips, approved cooperative work programs, drivers test, job interviews or other such reasons as may be approved by the Board of Education. An absence for any other reason is unexcused and is so noted on the student’s record. After three days without a written excuse, the student’s absence will be recorded as an unexcused absence. How will unexcused absences from class affect a student? In grades K-12 consequences may include, but are not limited to, in-school suspension, detention, and denial of participation in interscholastic, extracurricular, co-curricular fieldtrips and activities. How would a student know how many absences they have? Although it is the student’s responsibility to keep track of their own attendance, the school will notify parents when attendance becomes a problem. The notifications will alert you that possible consequences may result. However, students or parents may consult with the school at any time to find out the student’s current attendance status. What happens when a student needs to be excused from school early? In grades K-12, the student should present a note, signed and dated by the parent/guardian, to the designated person responsible for attendance in their building. A complete copy of the Medina Central School District Comprehensive Attendance Policy #7110 is available at any school. Student Dress Code All students are expected to give proper attention to personal cleanliness and to dress appropriately for school and school functions. Students and their parents have the primary responsibility for acceptable student dress and appearance. Teachers and all other district personnel should exemplify and reinforce acceptable student dress and help students develop an understanding of appropriate appearance in the school setting. A student’s dress, grooming and appearance, including hairstyle/color, jewelry, makeup and nails, should: 1. Be safe, appropriate and not disrupt or interfere with the educational process. 2. Recognize that extremely brief garments such as tube tops, net tops, halter tops, spaghetti straps, plunging necklines (front and/or back) and see-through garments are not appropriate. 3. Ensure that underwear is completely covered with outer clothing. 4. Include footwear at all times. Footwear that is a safety hazard will not be allowed. 5. Not include the wearing of hats in the classroom or any other headgear that detracts from the learning environment, except for a medical or religious purpose. 6. Not include items that are vulgar, obscene, and libelous or denigrate others on account of race, color, religion, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability. 7. Not promote and/or endorse the use of alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs and/or encourage other illegal or violent activities. Each building principal or his or her designee shall be responsible for informing all students and their parents of the student dress code at the beginning of the school year and any revisions to the dress code made during the school year. Students who violate the student dress code shall be required to modify their appearance by covering or removing the offending item and, of necessary or practical, replacing it with an acceptable item. Any student who refuses to do so shall be subject to further discipline, up to and including out of school suspension. School Food Service The Medina Central School District’s Food Service Program is contracted through Aramark Education, who will offer nutritious breakfast and lunch for students in grades kindergarten through twelve. Under new federal guidelines, districts are required to offer more nutritious meals, more fruits and vegetables. School meals are subsidized by the state and federal governments to help schools keep the cost per lunch low so most students may participate in the program. Additional subsidies are available for families who are eligible for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. *A NEW application for Free and Reduced Meals must be turned in by October 1st each school year to be considered for the program. Prepayment of meals is available at each school by going to: myschoolbucks.com Meal Prices 2015-2016 GradesBreakfastLunch K-3$1.15$1.30 4-7$1.20$1.45 8-12$1.20$1.45 The Food Service Director can be reached at 798-4229.
