Box 1030 Burney, California 96013 NEWS PHOTO / Craig Harrington With additional staffing, Shasta County is working to get more inspections done and more code enforcement compliance in our eastern Shasta County area, noted Dist. 3 Supervisor Pam Giacomini. “Finally we have some funding and reorganization to enable more oversight and service to our area,” she said. “There is a movement afoot to clean up the Burney area by some citizens — a worthy endeavor. “Shasta County has had an extra-help building inspector assigned to our area for the past couple years so code enforcement has somewhat fallen behind. “We now have a fulltime inspector who regularly takes that route twodays per week (additional days as needed) so staff will be able to respond to complaints in a timely manner. “Please fill out the direct online complaint form at http://www. co.shasta.ca.us/docs/ Resource_Management/ bldg-forms/Code_Violation_Complaint_form. pdf?sfvrsn=2 or visit the permit center at 1855 Placer Street, Redding. “The phone number for the inspection division is 244-5068,” she said. By SUSAN HOGUE Artist/crafter Michelle Blunt of Burney has a unique response to many items that most others would consider fodder for the dump. Their “junk” becomes her “junque,” bits and pieces to be evolved into everything from one-of-a-kind jewelry to lace adorned purses to handcrafted fabric dolls and unique wall signs. Nothing escapes her “re-purposing” visions. “I try to use stuff that’s already a little damaged because I don’t like to cut apart stuff that’s still whole,” Blunt said. “I take broken parts of things and make them into something different.” One of her most different, “who’d-athunk-it” creations, is bracelets formed of curved leather pieces separated from old baseballs. She had taken apart the worn softballs, repaired the braided trim on each segment, then added beads, clasps, and perhaps other enhancements, resulting in a soft, comfortable, and totally original “cuff” sure to please the most rabid of baseball fans. And that is only one of many unique jewelry items she has made. A material especially favored by Blunt in her jewelry creations is bits and pieces of burnished brass “lace” that were originally back plates on keyholes, drawer pulls, or other such hardware. “I like those little pieces,” she said, “because the patina on them looks like Old silverware evolves into hanging ornaments when Michelle Blunt enhances forks and spoons with painted images and then wraps them with baling wire, one of her many art expressions. –Please See Page 5A HAVE YOUR COMMUNITY DELIVERED TO YOUR MAIL BOX • CALL 725-0925 TO SUBSCRIBE TODAY! THE INTERMOUNTAIN NEWS • AUGUST 10, 2016 • PAGE 3A LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thanks to all citizens Editor: During the week of July 17 through July 23, 2016, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office conducted direct enforcement in numerous areas of Shasta County. High crime areas were targeted by patrol deputies which resulted in numerous arrests, citations issued, stolen vehicles recovered and stolen property recovered. The areas included in and around Win River Casino, Happy Valley, Cottonwood and stretches along Highway 273. However this “News Release” is not just about the proactivity of the deputies. This release is to thank all the citizens of Shasta County. During this direct enforcement operation, numerous upon numerous citizens of Shasta County contacted my deputies. The citizens expressed their appreciation of our commitment to “Serve and Protect.” The handshakes, the “High Fives,” the hugs, and the comments to us about being safe as we do our job has been overwhelming. On behalf of myself, and my deputies and the Sheriff’s Office as a whole, thank you very much! The unbelievable thoughts, gestures and prayers meant a lot to us! Thank you Citizens of Shasta County. –Sergeant Steve Grashoff S114 Patrol Operations Thanks to all for O.S. BBQ success Editor: We would like to thank the community for supporting the Old Station Volunteer Fire Company at our Chicken Barbeque on July 30. It was a great success, due to the hard work by our volunteers, led by John Becker, Don Curtis and Dave and Diane Snodgrass. Many volunteers helped set up, serve and clean up and we couldn’t do it without them. The crafts fair was enjoyed by all, with organization by Barbara Gularte. The raffle prizes were donated by the community and the craft artists. We thank everyone who attended and helped fund our local Shasta County Volunteer Fire Company 12. –Joann Moore, Treasurer Old Station Volunteer Fire Company It seems to me... Editor: It seems to me that real estate values in the Burney area have not kept up with other locations. People I’ve talked to feel their appraisals were significantly lower than they expected. The Calfornia state office of Real Estate Appraisers has a procedure to follow if you have concerns about your appraisal. You may obain a complaint form at www.orea. ca.gov or you may call (916) 552-9020. They do require “evidence supporting your allegation.” The complaint form is relatively easy to complete, but if you would like help or would just like to share your experiences, I can be reached at PO Box 819, Burney 96013. –Rick Morris Burney Eternally greatful Editor: We would like to thank everyone for their kind words, phone calls, cards and sympathy in the passing of our Mother and Grandmother Louise Roufs Chandler. Mom lived a wonderful full life for almost 99 years and was healthy and happy to the end. The food that was brought and prepared for the reception was outstanding. To all of our friends that were there to support our family we are eternally grateful. –Stan, Glorianne, Doug, Vicki and Scott Weigand Sex offenders in compliance On Friday deputies with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office conducted a SAFE (Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement) operation throughout Shasta County. The purpose of the operation was to conduct probation and parole compliance checks as well as address verifications throughout Shasta County on subjects that are convicted sex offenders. The primary objective was to ensure that sex offenders living within Shasta County are in compliance with their probation or parole conditions, and to ensure their address registration requirements. As a result of the operation the team contacted 25 registered sex offenders and conducted eight searches of offenders who were either on probation or parole. The team conducted a total of 25 address confirmations on sex offenders to verify their residence of record and attempted an additional 10 address verifications. Each of the sex offenders contacted were found to be in compliance with the terms and conditions of their probation, parole, or address confirmations. California’s Megan’s Law is available on-line and provides the public with certain information on the whereabouts of sex offenders so that members of local communities may protect themselves and their children. The law is not intended to punish the registrant and specifically prohibits using the information to harass or commit any crime against a registrant (Pen. Code § 290.46). Those who have any information regarding a known or suspected sex registrant that is in violation of the terms of his or her probation, parole or address registration are urged to contact the sheriff’s department. By Dr. JAMES L. SNYDER Growing up we did not have a TV in our home. My father was just too cheap to spend the money for something as frivolous as TV, so he bought comic books to read. “Books,” he often said to us, “are better than watching some silly TV program.” They were also cheaper. Then one day something happened that changed everything. On November 22, 1963, the president of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, was assassinated. The next day my father went out and bought our first TV set. Then everything changed in our home. Our father stayed on top of all the stories connected with the president’s assassination. It was a sad time for our country. My siblings and I were introduced to a phenomenon called cartoons. Now, I had a large collection of comic books which, if I had today and I could sell them and become a very rich man. However, a TV cartoon was something altogether different. It took us a long time to realize those cartoon characters were just that and not real people. To us, they were as real as real got. When we got home from school, my siblings and I headed for the TV set and were mesmerized by these cartoons. We loved them all. I say we loved them all but there was one exception. That one exception was Porky Pig. We hated to see Porky Pig on the TV because he always said, “That’s all, folks!” And that was the end of the cartoons. The first time we saw him say that we cried. “What do you mean that’s all?” We just could not believe our eyes and ears, but that was the end of the cartoons for the day and we would have to wait until tomorrow to see them again. It is not like today when you can watch anything you want, anytime you want to watch it. That was when I was young, but as I got older I began to see that Porky Pig could serve a situation right well. For example, when I was in school and the teacher went on and on and I was getting so bored that I would have liked to have brought Porky Pig into the classroom to say, “That’s all, folks!” Then we would head to the outside playground where the real fun was. Porky Pig would have been a great blessing in most of my classes. Not that the teachers were boring, mind you. Just that what they were saying was boring. Nothing is more boring than when somebody is talking about something you have no interest in whatsoever. That is when we need, “That’s all, folks!” Don’t let this get around or I will deny it, but as a teenager sitting in church I often wished that Porky Pig would walk down the aisle while our pastor was preaching and say, “That’s all, folks!” (I wonder how many people think that while I’m preaching?) Sometimes you have enough of something and just want it to stop and just don’t know how to do it. I imagine, I just am not going to ask, but at the dinner table there are times when the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage would like to bring Porky Pig into the dining room to say to me, “That’s all, folks!” Of course, because Porky Pig is a pig she might be afraid that I would eat him by mistake. She may be right about that. Lately, I have been thinking of Porky Pig and what he could do today. I am not sure if the cartoons are still on television I have long ago given up watching them. Of course, if you watch any political program on TV it does resemble a cartoon, at least a bad cartoon. Porky Pig could come in handy, particularly concerning politics. If I see one more political debate or whatever they call it on TV, I think I am going to scream. Here is exactly where Porky Pig could come in for the rescue. Just as they begin some political program, Porky Pig comes on the set and says, “That’s all, folks!” And we move on to something less boring. That would be a great help today. I think what makes politics so boring and obnoxious are the politicians themselves. There should be a rule somewhere that says that anybody running for any kind of political office needs to hire Porky Pig in order to know when enough is enough. If anybody is interested, I’m willing to hire myself out to be someone’s Porky Pig, I can say “That’s all, folks” in a variety of sarcastic tones. Porky Pig could give the American public a well needed rest and break from all the nonsense we see on TV. I know in Washington there’s a lot of pork that goes around, but the kind of pork I’m talking about is Porky Pig who can stand up and speak for the American public, “That’s all, folks!” We need somebody to be America’s voice today and as far as I am concerned, Porky Pig fits the job. Everything should have an end in sight somewhere. I like what the apostle Peter said. “But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer” (1 Peter 4:7). Could someone in the political arena, please stand up and say “That’s all, folks!” Dr. James L. Snyder is pastor of the Family of God Fellowship, 1471 Pine Road, Ocala, FL 34472. He lives with his wife in Silver Springs Shores. Call him at 352-687-4240 or e-mail [email protected]. The church website is www.whatafellowship.com. Aroma therapy beads a favorite -From Page 1A they came from a long time ago.” She sometimes adds to that “long time ago” look in the brooches, necklaces, earrings, and pins she makes by attaching vintage beads to the brass lace pieces, thus “framing” the beads. Included in those beads are everything from vintage freshwater pearls to modern “Mirage” beads, those liquid crystal “mood” beads that change colors in response to body temperature fluctuations. Another favorite among Michelle’s jewelry materials is the “aroma therapy” beads she develops herself by soaking fairly porous clay pieces in lavender or spice liquids, and then making necklaces with the scented beads. Jewelry, however, is only a part of Blunt’s art and craft expression. She started some 30 years ago making fabric dolls and teddy bears with jointed, movable arms and legs, all of which she regularly sold out of at craft shows in Redding. After moving to Burney 28 years ago so her husband, Ed, could help construct what was then a new sawmill outside Burney, Blunt began participating locally in yearly craft shows. She continued to evolve in her expressions, creating everything from “brooch bouquets” constructed with vintage jewelry, to charming little “Mer-Babies,” infant mermaids made of colorfully glazed clay, and wallhung towel racks formed of broken chair parts salvaged from burn piles. Those towel racks include hanging loops and words such as “home” formed of twisted, black baling wire. Blunt’s penchant for upscaling salvaged materials is especially apparent in her lack of ability to pass up pieces of antique, crocheted doilies, lace trim and colorful old fabric scraps. Those collectibles are mostly used in her recycled linen “Gypsy Bags” and purses. She uses old linen napkins, scarves and kerchiefs when making her “flax seed pillows”, microwaveable or freezable pain and tensionrelieving packets, filled with the aforementioned flax seed. And, speaking of “salvaged,” Blunt even follows her philosophy in the sewing machine she uses daily, an electrically upgraded, antique Singer treadle model which she’s had for many years. After she and her husband settled into Burney, Michelle got to know other local artists and became a regular participant in area art and craft shows, one of her favorites being the Santa’s Workshop developed years ago at the InterMountain fairgrounds by local artists Toni Diaz and Rena Hawkins. Meeting local artists encouraged Blunt in her work, with especially valued commentary from artist/ teacher Pat Carlson, who told Blunt “You’re really not a crafter. You’re an artist!” Such encouragement helped Blunt continue to express her creativity during her years as a stayat-home mom raising three daughters. It also contributed to her decision, when her youngest daughter graduated high school, to return to school herself and earn her teaching credential. With credential in hand, Blunt began her teaching career substituting at Fall River and Burney Elementary schools, then, after five years, taking a full-time position at Montgomery Creek Elementary, where she has worked the past three years. At Montgomery Creek she teaches transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade. “It’s a great new venue for me, actually,” Blunt said, “as I can kind of incorporate my art work into my teaching.” And, she said, she has her summer break to prepare for one of her long- time favorite venues, participation in the Inter-Mountain Fair booth featuring local artists and crafters in the commercial building all through the fair on Labor Day weekend. There will also be, after the start of the school year, the Holiday Homemade Craft Fair in November at Burney Elementary School, and then, in December, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Christmas Bazaar, all of which are events perfect for the enjoyment of sharing her works with others. WHEREAS, by virtue of this default, the Secretary has declared the entire amount of the indebtedness secured by the Deed of Trust to be immediately due and payable; NOW THEREFORE, pursuant to powers vested in me by the Single Family Mortgage Foreclosure Act of 1994, 12 U.S.C. 3751 et seq., by 24 CFR part 27, subpart B, and by the Secretary’s designation of me as Foreclosure Commissioner, recorded on 06/25/2015 as Instrument No. 2015-0018224, notice is hereby given that on 08/17/2016, at 11:00AM local time, all real and personal property at or used in connection with the following described premises (“Property”) will be sold at public auction to the highest bidder: AS MORE FULLY DESCRIBED IN SAID DEED OF TRUST Commonly known as: 40905 BROWN ROAD, FALL RIVER MILLS, CA 96028 The sale will be held at: At the East entrance to the County Courthouse at 1500 Court Street, Redding, CA. The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development will bid $217,066.73. There will be no proration of taxes, rents or other income or liabilities, except that the purchaser will pay, at or before closing, his pro rata share of any real estate taxes that have been paid by the Secretary to the date of the foreclosure sale. When making their bids, all bidders except the Secretary must submit a deposit totaling $21,706.67 [10% of the Secretary’s bid] in the form of a certified check or cashier’s check made out to the Secretary of HUD. A deposit need not accompany each oral bid. If the successful bid is oral, a deposit of $21,706.67 must be presented before the bidding is closed. The deposit is nonrefundable. The remainder of the purchase price must be delivered within 30 days of the sale or at such other time as the Secretary may determine for good cause shown, time being of the essence. This amount, like the bid deposits, must be delivered in the form of a certified or cashier’s check. If the Secretary is the highest bidder, he need not pay the bid amount in cash. The successful bidder will pay all conveying fees, all real estate and other taxes that are due on or after the delivery date of the remainder of the payment and all other costs associated with the transfer of title. At the conclusion of the sale, the deposits of the unsuccessful bidders will be returned to them. The Secretary may grant an extension of time within which to deliver the remainder of the payment. All extensions will be for a 15-day increments for a fee of $500.00, paid in advance. The extension fee will be in the form of a certified or cashier’s check made payable to the Secretary of HUD. If the high bidder closes the sale prior to the expiration of any extension period, the unused portion of the extension fee shall be applied toward the amount due. If the high bidder is unable to close the sale within the required period, or within any extensions of time granted by the Secretary, the high bidder may be required to forfeit the cash deposit or, at the election of the foreclosure commissioner after consultation with the HUD representative, will be liable to HUD for any costs incurred as a result of such failure. The commissioner may, at the direction of the HUD representative, offer the property to the second highest bidder for an amount equal to the highest price offered by that bidder. There is no right of redemption, or right of possession based upon a right of redemption, in the mortgagor or others subsequent to a foreclosure completed pursuant to the Act. Therefore, the Foreclosure Commissioner will issue a Deed to the purchaser(s) upon receipt of the entire purchase price in accordance with the terms of the sale as provided herein. HUD does not guarantee that the property will be vacant. The scheduled foreclosure sale shall be cancelled or adjourned if it is established, by documented written application of the mortgagor to the Foreclosure Commissioner not less than 3 days before the date of sale, or otherwise, that the default or defaults upon which the foreclosure is based did not exist at the time of service of this notice of default and foreclosure sale, or all amounts due under the mortgage agreement are tendered to the Foreclosure Commissioner, in the form of a certified or cashier’s check payable to the Secretary of HUD, before public auction of the property is completed. The amount that must be paid if the mortgage is to be reinstated prior to the scheduled sale is $217,051.69 as of August 16, 2016, plus all other amounts that would be due under the mortgage agreement if payments under the mortgage had not been accelerated, advertising costs and postage expenses incurred in giving notice, mileage by the most reasonable road distance for posting notices and for the Foreclosure Commissioner’s attendance at the sale, reasonable and customary costs incurred for title and lien record searches, the necessary out-of-pocket costs incurred by the Foreclosure Commissioner for recording documents, a commission for the Foreclosure Commissioner, and all other costs incurred in connection with the foreclosure prior to reinstatement. Tender of payment by certified or cashier’s check or application for cancellation of the foreclosure sale shall be submitted to the address of the Foreclosure Commissioner provided below.
