A breakfast of ham or sausage, eggs and pancakes will be served from 7-11 a.m. The funds raised through the breakfast and raffles offset the costs of operations for the flying posse. Walk & bike tour A nature walk and bicycle tour is offered on Great Shasta Rail Trail on National Trails Day, Saturday, June 4, beginning at 9 a.m. GRST is California’s newest off-road trail for non-motorized use, located between McCloud and Burney. Events begin at the Burney Trailhead located east of town at the intersection of Highway 299 and Black Ranch Road. The Nature Walk is a scenic exploration of the trail’s flora, fauna near the ground and surrounding tall trees. Tour leaders are a retired forest service official and a nature educator. The trail is open to all bicyclists who may ride any distance. Fat tire bikes are more stable on the red cindered trail. The organized bicycle ride to the “Stand by Me” bridge over Lake Britton is nearly 10 miles, one-way. For additional information, contact [email protected] or call 530-925-6362. NEWS PHOTOS / Craig Harrington 89/52 Deputies arrest man in assault On Thursday, at about 3:05 a.m., staff from Mayers Memorial Hospital reported an assault victim in the emergency room. Shasta County sheriff’s deputies from the Burney Station responded and contacted a 26-year-old man, who requested to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation. The victim reported he was contacted by an acquaintance, Juan Diaz, 27, of Burney at the Pit River gas station earlier in the morning. Diaz was upset with the victim due to him failing to repair a firearm for him in a timely manner, stated sheriff’s Sgt. Quentin Johnston. “The victim agreed to go to Diaz’s residence on Oak Street in Burney to talk about the firearm in question,” Johnston said. “Once at the residence, Diaz further asked the victim about the firearm. The victim tried to inform Diaz he could not fix the firearm due to it missing too many parts,” Johnston said. “Diaz became upset and grabbed a .22 caliber handgun and sat in on a table in front of him. Diaz made several threats to pistol whip the victim. Diaz reportedly grabbed the pistol and hit the –Please See Page 10A 6/2 Intermountain Artists & Crafters Mix of sun and clouds. Box 1030 Burney, California 96013 Her art incorporates glass in its many forms Story and Photo By SUSAN HOGUE Glass in the form of tiny “seed” beads or custom cut triangles, waves, petals or squares is the basic material in Tony Diaz’s creative expression these days. In the hands of Diaz, those glass pieces become everything from exquisitely executed jewelry, to translucent wall hangings, yard art and “stained glass” windows. The latter are formed of specially cut glass pieces glued to the panes of windows recycled from old houses. Those old windows end up as everything from a “Monet inspired bridge over water,” as seen here, to a “scattering of flowers in leaded glass” as displayed in the window of Diaz’s friend’s house in Burney. As for those glass seed beads, they are stitched, two tiny beads at a time, to leather backings forming original, “design as you go” bracelets, pendants, necklaces and other jewelry. Toni’s jewelry creations incorporate other items as well, including small animal forms, abalone shell, baroque fresh water pearls, or semi-precious stones such as turquoise, often in their original, “found” shapes. No two finished pieces are ever alike, Diaz noted. Another unique, seed bead item she has enjoyed making is Christmas tree ornaments, where she has stitched together a beaded “bonnet” which slips over the top of a globe ornament. “The beaded decoration comes off,” Diaz said, “so if the ornament gets broken it can just be put on another ornament.” Such practical considerations are –Please See Page 3A On display here are a few examples of works by Fall River Mills crafter Toni Diaz. She makes a special point of using recycled materials in her work, including everything from the old windows mentioned above to tables, chairs, nightstands, wood slabs, glass and dinnerware, pieces of fabric, and the bedsheets she uses for batik designs. The furniture pieces are often painted in bright colors before being topped with mosaic glass “tiles” she custom cuts to fit whatever design she has in mind. The “glass mosaic” patterns also surface such items as coat racks or, in cut mirror pieces, the front of guitar-shaped wall hangings. A lifelong resident of Fall River Mills, Diaz credits her mother, Gertrude St. John, who was born in McArthur, with being her “inspiration and long time supporter in many ways.” Her mother made beaded jewelry pins and did “incredible embroidery work,” Diaz said, mentioning that she is using sections of her mother’s embroidered clothing to make a wall hanging for her own daughter, Marnie Chapman. Marnie had recently visited from her home in Alaska where she is a science professor at University of Alaska, Sitka. That family closeness is important to Diaz, she said. Her son, Marlon Sloan, who is a naturalist at McArthur Burney Falls Memorial State Park, lives just down the street from her home and birthplace, a quiet site overlooking the Pit River. And, her brother and sister-in-law live in the original family dwelling next door to Toni’s house and studio. When asked about her collection of materials for her craft projects, Diaz allowed as how she’s “only working with glass any more.” She did mention, though, her past productions of many different items such as “primitive soft sculptures made of muslin,” including a little dog figure which she covered with old watches and appropriately titled “Watch Dog.” She also has enjoyed working in papier-mache, a technique she learned years ago when she took frequent trips to Mexico. It was on those trips that she developed a fondness for Mexican folk art, especially the art related to Day of the Dead celebrations. In tribute to that folk art she has among her works at home a “skull” sculpture which she has adorned with multiple colored glass tiles, bringing a lively sparkle of respect to what some would consider a macabre subject. When acknowledging the wide variety in her art production, Diaz, mostly self-taught, said she is “a firm believer that if you want to do it, you can learn how.” Saying she will often “switch off” in her art expressions, Diaz said “I can’t ever quit because I’ve got too much stuff! So I just keep making different things out of all of it. My main thing in making stuff is to make it,” she said. “I just like the making of it, and then I want it out of my life.” That, she said, is one of the main reasons she likes donating items to benefit such organizations as the Fall River Education Association, Channel 9/KIXE, or the Mayers Memorial Hospice program. She also markets her works under the heading of “stuff by toni” at such venues as The Beadman in Redding or jewelry stores in Sitka, as well as, locally, at Intermountain Campus • MORE CLASSES -to graduate faster • MORE FLEXIBILITY -for class completion • MORE OPTIONS -to build your future FALL SEMESTER begins August 15th Apply Today! www.shastacollege.edu Shasta College is an equal opportunity educator and employer. As to her philosophy behind the creating and the giving in her everyday life, Diaz said “if you sweep your floor, you have to sweep it again tomorrow. But if you create something, it’s there forever. That,” she said, “is very satisfying.” And is, no doubt, the reason she will continue doing, every day, what she enjoys best, the process of “just making it.” VIDEO AT burneyfalls.co PAGE 4A • THE INTERMOUNTAIN NEWS • JUNE 1, 2016 BURNEY HIGH SCHOOL TRENTON ARENDT ASHLEY BAILEY BAYLEE BERLT GABRIELA CHACON BARRERA DEVON CHRISTENSON RAY GUERRERO VANCE LANKFORD ALEX MADERA MARILYN MADERA KYLER MARKS MARIBEL MERCADO CAMERON PEARSON STEPHANIE RICE BRIAN ROPER LOVELY SCHECKLA LAUREN SCHNEIDER EMMA SEALANDER JASON SEARL ANTHONY SEMER JUSTIN SHAW ELIJAH STUMBAUGH CARISSA TEREBA JESSICA THOMPSON BEVERLY VAUGHN KATIE YOUNG PRECISION LUBE EXPRESS COME SEE US AT OUR BUSINESS LOCATION 43597 HWY 299 336-5222 37451 Enterprise Drive Burney • 335-5372 Shasta Green, Inc. 35586-A HIGHWAY 299 BURNEY 335-4924 CARPENTER’S TRUCKING & VOLCANO ROCK Hwy 299E • McArthur 336-5256 HIWAY FRANK WATKINS AGENCY GARAGE 44275 Highway 299 McArthur • 336-5532 100 North Market St. Bieber • 294-5677 H&R LOGGING 21681 Cottonwood BURNEY 530-335-2522 BYRON BOYD TRUCKING MOUNTAIN VALLEYS HEALTH CENTERS 554-850 Medical Center Drive • Bieber CASSEL BIG VALLEY 294-5241 FALL RIVER 336-6535 BURNEY 335-5457 335-3541 BURNEY TRANSPORTATION 21703 Cottonwood • Burney 335-2729 THE INTERMOUNTAIN NEWS northstate.news • 725-0925 INTERMOUNTAIN FLOORS 437260 Mt. Watch for signs posted along the route. Tickets remain at $15 or $13 for those who don’t want a ride on the train. Proceeds from the event help support all branches of the Modoc County Library. Ticket holders will be welcome to wander the grounds and visit many turn of the century buildings, including a jail, barber shop, school, assay office, blacksmith shop, bayou house, and much more. Among the demonstrators will be wool spinning, pottery making, Dutch oven cooking, wheelwright, leather craft, and more arti- sans displaying their talents. And don’t forget – a ride on a real train will be the highlight of the day. Rumor has it that a bandit might be planning a holdup of the train so riders need to be on the lookout. Back by popular demand, the Oregon Old Time Fiddlers will join a local group of musicians throughout the day. All the above is included in the cost of a ticket, as is the barbecue lunch. Tickets are presale only and cannot be purchased the day of the event. Sponsored by the Friends of the Modoc County Library, tickets can be reserved at the Adin, Cedarville and Lookout branches and purchased at the Alturas library. The victim then fell to the ground,” he said. The victim reported Diaz hit him four more times in the head with the pistol. Diaz also kicked the victim several times, Johnston stated. The victim stated Diaz then stuck the pistol to the back of his head and asked him if he wanted to die. The victim then negotiated with Diaz, offering him a newer firearm if he let him go. “Diaz drove with the victim to his residence, where the victim gave Diaz a newer firearm,” Johnston said. The victim was then able to negotiate his release from Diaz and stated a friend later drove him to the hospital for treatment. The victim received several sutures for his wounds and further medical treatment. A search warrant was later requested and granted by the Shasta County Superior Court for Diaz’s residence on Oak Street in Burney. p.m., deputies served the search warrant. Diaz initially refused to come out of the residence for a short time, telling deputies, “You better not come in.” “Entry was subsequently made and Diaz was detained without further incident,” Johnston stated. Diaz was also in the company of a young juvenile, who was later released to his mother. During a search of the residence, deputies located the two firearms described by the victim as being involved in the assault. Deputies also located suspected blood evidence that matched up to the victim’s statement. Evidence of narcotic use and sales were also located during the search. Diaz was arrested and booked into the Shasta County jail for terrorist threats, assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, extortion, child endangerment, and assault causing great bodily injury. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 730-2727 or visit this Internet Web site www.servicelinkasap.com, using the file number assigned to this case 3841-40. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site.
