Twenty-five years ago a group of ambitious and
dedicated community members, city administrators
and generous benefactors set out to make a wild
dream come true. Looking back, there is no doubt
that their vision and determination to create a permanent home for the
“Summer’s Best Music” forever changed Kettering. It is with gratitude for
their efforts that we dedicate this Fraze Pavilion 25th Anniversary Edition of
Contact with Kettering to those who worked tirelessly to make the crowned
jewel of Kettering a reality.

Since 1991 Fraze has served millions of customers and has gained many
loyal and dedicated fans. Season after season, concert-goers rave about how
seeing internationally known musicians at Fraze feels more like enjoying a
private show in their own backyard. Well, we have been hard at work getting
Kettering’s “backyard” ready to welcome you for our 25th season. In the past
year we’ve installed all new brick pavers and pedestrian lights, improved the
signature fountains, added a patio and constructed a one-of-a-kind guest
entrance and light tower. Soon new banners will go up throughout the park
and along the corridors leading to Fraze to commemorate this special season.
We have so much in store to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Fraze
with you! There’s an amazing line-up of artists this year — see pages
8 and 9 for the season schedule. Your favorite Fraze Festivals, $2
Tuesdays, Breakfasts with the Beatles and $5 Fridays are all back. And
to top it all off, the 25th Anniversary Free Concert Series featuring
Blood, Sweat and Tears with Bo Bice in June, Grand Funk Railroad in
July, and The Spinners in August, is our way of thanking you for all of
your support of Fraze over the past 25 years.
I have a list of my favorite Fraze memories, and I’m sure most of you
do too. For some Fraze means that once-in-a-lifetime chance to see
a music legend live on stage. For others Fraze means a treasured
annual tradition like the Kettering Block Party, Spass Nacht, Holiday
at Home and Taste of Kettering. For me, Fraze means community and
Fraze means Kettering pride.

Under the Stars, we’re saying
thank you to the Kettering
community and all our fans in the
Miami Valley by offering three
FREE concerts.
While the concert is free, a ticket is
required for entry and will be available
on the dates outlined below at the Fraze
Pavilion Ticket Office located in Lincoln
Park. Tickets will not be available at
Fraze FanFare. There is a 4 ticket limit per
person, per day.

“Summerfest originated with the Mix team and me wanting to do a big feel-good,
retro concert at Fraze,” says Jeff Stevens, co-host of the Mix Morning Show. “I think
people like to be nostalgic. This annual event is a night out and a chance to forget life
for a couple hours and sing your lungs out and have fun at a great place.”
“Every artist says ‘we love this place’ when they play Fraze, and they usually repeat
it on stage too,” adds Stevens. “I’m looking forward to Summerfest 18 with Rick
Springfield, who was our very first Summerfest artist back in 1999.”
“This past September we lost my sister-in-law Carol
Wittkamp at age 34, my inspiration in starting the
event 19 years ago! We celebrate her great and
joyful healthy years, and are inspired with hope for
the future — and eventual cure,” says John Condit,
founder of this fund raising event.

Son of Pavilion’s Namesake
Reflects on 25 Years
Mark Fraze, son of Ermal and Martha Fraze,
remembers vividly the story behind the
world class venue’s early beginnings.
me ‘this was the way I’m going to honor
your dad.’ That’s when it became Fraze
Pavilion.”
“In the late 1980’s I was at the city’s
government building working on some
zoning issues for my recording studio,
ReFraze, which I built in 1983. Pete
Horan, then Assistant City Manager, was
there and said he wanted to show me
something. Pete had a mock-up of this
entertainment venue the city wanted to
build. I mentioned how nice the mockup was and Pete said there were some
opportunities for the capital campaign to
help fund it. My father passed in 1989 and
organizations of all kinds were coming
to mom’s door to help fund something
to build in honor of dad. From Junior
Achievement, to a tool maker museum, on
and on.” Mark says.
The 4,300 seat outdoor amphitheater
opened in 1991 and safe to say exceeded
all expectations.
On a whim Mark took the as yet unmanned project to his mom.
“Mom already had an interest to do
something and this project really struck
a chord with her. She loved it and told
“Did I really think it was going to do as
well as it has back then? Well, I knew it
would do well, be a success. And whatever
I thought it was going to be it has become
more than that.” Mark says. “Sheryl Crow
(in 2003) shoots her live concert on DVD
there and when that happened, musicians
woke up and said, ‘Whoa this is the place
to go. Fraze Pavilion is on the A list’. Then
Ringo Starr performs in 2008, does it get
any bigger?” Mark says.
Mark says even though his dad never saw
the Fraze dream come true, he would be
humbled and thrilled by the enjoyment
and enrichment thousands have received
for 25 summer seasons.

Award and Academy of Country Music
Entertainer of the Year opened for Dwight
Yoakam and SheDaisy in 2006.
NORAH JONES – Opened for the
Indigo Girls in 2002. In 2003
she won 5 Grammy Awards.
BLAKE SHELTON – His first
Number 1 hit “Austin” hit the
charts in 2001 the same
week he opened for Jo
Dee Messina. Shelton
made a return visit in
2010.
MICHAEL BUBLE – First appearance in
July 2003 after he sang the Canadian
National Anthem at Baseball’s All Star
Game. Tickets were $12.50. Buble
returned to sell out the venue in 2006.
FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE – Performed twice
in the same day, June 2, 2012. Once on
the festival stage in Lincoln Park and on
the main stage later that night when the
Country Throwdown Tour, headlined by
Gary Allan, stopped at Fraze.

Q&A with Fraze Fan
Scott Kinnison
Why is Fraze special to you?
The stage is so close to the audience. Most
venues the size of Fraze have a much higher
stage and a barrier wall between the artist and
fans. The Lincoln Park background setting is
wonderful too. Hearing crickets and cicadas in
the quiet moments between songs is pretty neat.

As a frequent concert goer,
best show you’ve seen?
The first show I went to was Melissa Etheridge
in 1994. I go to 12 to 15 Fraze shows per year,
so that’s a tough question to answer. If I had to
pick one, I’d say the Steve Martin, Edie Brickell
& The Steep Canyon Rangers. But I could also
categorize things into favorite type of show.
Favorite Tribute show by far is Get the Led Out
(Zeppelin tribute). The best $5 shows would be
John Waite, The Romantics, and Colin Hay.

I’m a “music junkie” who by day sells ATMs and
banking equipment, but on the side I have a

to help the artist’s music get heard.
Anything Else to Add?
Fraze should get high marks for its diversity.
They offer a nice mix of genres. Most venues
tend to focus on a much narrower style of artists.
I’ve been to dozens of venues around the US,
and Fraze is one of, if not the very best. I hope
the Kettering and Dayton community realizes
what a wonderful facility they have in their
backyard.
Love At ‘Fraze’ Site, The Bentley’s
Jamie and Craig Bentley met on July 23,
2013 at the Hunter Hayes concert. Jamie
and her best friend Erica had been looking
forward to a girl’s night out for months.
“I’ve always been a fan of the fairytale
ending, however I never thought I was
going to meet mine that night,” says Jamie.
“Erica and I found the perfect spot on the
lawn hours before the show began and
that’s when it happened. That’s when I
looked up and saw him heading right
toward us. I looked to Erica and told her to
look at him, he could be the one. He walked
toward us and sat down and my heart
skipped a beat.”
Jamie goes on to say, “Now this might be
a little cheesy but 10 months prior to this

with my daughter, Emily.

meeting their families
and realizing their moms

became parents April 2, 2016.

and is looking forward to
seeing Rachel Platten in August.
New baby Charlotte will join the
family this summer for Swamp
Romp and Bacon Fest.
The couple told us, “Fraze will
forever hold a special spot in our
hearts. If it wasn’t for the Hunter
Hayes concert, we would have
never met and our lives would be
forever different. Thanks to Fraze
we have a story we will be able to
tell our children and grandchildren for years
to come. This is just the start of our Happily
Ever After.”

James Dunlap – Of all the venues in this area, it is the prettiest place to put in a 15 hour
day. Technology has changed so much through the years. I’m a sound engineer and sound
systems have gone from giant mixing consoles and heavy amplifiers to light weight digital
everything.
I have never been one to get star-struck but, I almost was when after a show, John Entwistle
(The Who) asked me to fetch his sunglasses off of his bass rig. I just stared at him with child
eyes and kept saying his full name. He probably thought something was wrong with me.

summer. The volunteer department and Fraze team has been great to me. To take someone
who doesn’t live in Kettering and welcome them with open arms — I have had a blast. We
have a lot of laughs and great times. (Volunteer since 2012)
Rod & Lyn Springer – As part of the volunteer leadership team, we interact with our
guests, and try to make them feel welcome. It is rewarding to know we are helping them
have a pleasant entertainment experience. By the way, Fraze is a great place to people
watch. (Volunteers since 1996)
Amanda Lasson - I started out 8 years ago simply pouring beers and serving hot dogs
and I am now managing the concessions area. Which means I manage inventory, sales and
staff while still pouring beer and selling hot dogs.

Summers at Fraze are my favorite time of year! I love the work, being outdoors and reuniting
with my second “family”. I spend time with these people outside of work and throughout
the year. I am grateful for the opportunity to know them. I’m so lucky to work outside in the

duties as assigned” that’s for me and I love it. It’s the best job EVER!

Mike Broaddus - One of the funniest stories for me
in 15 years was in 2012 when Bonnie Raitt was here. 20
girls, all wearing red wigs, walk through the entry gates
together. With Bonnie coming back in August — I’m
waiting for another Kodak moment.
But a moment I’ll forever cherish was an Air Force Band
of Flight concert. I noticed a gentleman and a lady sitting
in the first row. She was trying to get him comfortable as
he sat in his Veteran’s attire. I walked over and asked if I
could help. She informed me she needed to go to the
restroom, her husband Bob was ill, she did not want to
leave him alone. I told her I would keep him company.
Bob and I talked about how much he loved the Air Force Band and
was so glad he got to attend. After his wife returned she asked if I could help her to the
car when the concert ended. I realized at that point, Bob was very ill. A hour or so later
as I got Bob and his wife back to their car he grabbed my hand looked at me and said,
“Thanks, I had a great time and forgot how sick I really am.” This is what Fraze is about.

Over 4 million people have visited concerts, festivals and free events at Fraze
Pavilion and Lincoln Park over the last 24 seasons.
Ringo Starr made his Fraze debut in 2008 and returned for another
sold out show in 2014.
Approximately 300 team members hired each summer for ticket office,
concessions, usher, ticket taker, peer security and back stage positions.
Ermal Fraze patented the “pop top” in 1963.
Over 2600 ice cream treats served each summer.
220,000 gallons of water circulate through the fountains in Lincoln Park.
The Taste, the Kettering-Moraine-Oakwood Chamber of Commerce’s
biggest fund raiser, moved to Lincoln Park in 2001.

Art on the Commons is now in its 28th year.

year after year. Last summer more than 400 properties
were nominated for this award. You will receive a letter
and nomination postcard from Mayor Patterson. Please
consider nominating yourself or a neighbor for this most
prestigious award. To nominate a property in Kettering,
all you have to do is complete the postcard and mail it
back to us. Winners will be recognized publicly at a City
Council meeting and an attractive sign will be placed in

construction projects
aimed at preserving our
infrastructure each year.
Work is already
underway on the entire
length of Stroop Road from
South Dixie Drive to Dorothy
Lane. From South Dixie Drive
to Shroyer Road the project
improvements will include
milling off approximately
2.5" of the old asphalt and
replacing it with new asphalt
along with improving handicap
ramps to meet current
standards at the intersections.
The East Stroop Road portion
of the project will involve the
construction of a 10' wide
sidewalk from Glengarry Drive
to Wilmington Pike plus asphalt
resurfacing along East Stroop

Grandchildren
According to the U.S. Census
Bureau, over 86,000 children
in the state of Ohio are being
raised by their grandparents.
These grandparents are a
part of a growing group of
Americans referred to as
Kinship Caregivers.
Kinship Care refers to a
temporary or permanent
arrangement in which an adult
other than the child’s parent
is the primary caregiver. No
matter what the reason for
this relationship these children
require additional emotional
support due to the situations
that led to the kinship
relationship.
Older individuals also have
some unique problems when
taking on this role. They may
be experiencing a decline in
health that often comes with
getting older. Finances may
also be a concern when the
grandparent is living on a fixed
income such as social security.
The greatest concern heard
by advocates is not that the
grandparents are not willing
to be the caregiver, but that
they have concerns about their
physical or financial ability to
care for the child.
The Kinship Caregiver Coalition
was formed to advocate for
these special caregivers and
the children they care for.
Support offered by the
Kinship Navigator program
includes information and
referral for services such
as medical care, financial
assistance, housing, legal
assistance, support groups
and most important

and understand.

effort to encourage preschool for ALL 4 year olds.
Preschool Promise offers tuition assistance for any
Kettering family wishing to enroll their 4 year old in
preschool. Assistance varies depending on family income
and selected participating preschool provider.
