The first Fiber Hawaii exhibit was sponsored by Hawaii Craftsmen in 1982 at the Amfac
Center Gallery. This marks the 30th anniversary year of the biannual exhibit. The late 70's
and early 80's was a time when fiber art was coming into its own as fine art as well as a
traditional craft. Artists were experimenting with all sorts of techniques and materials. We

wanted to encourage artists from all media to accept the challenge of making something with
textile media or concepts so we sent out letters inviting sculptors, painters, printmakers,
ceramists and others to enter the show. Encouraging work "In, Of or About Fiber" has
continued to be a guiding force in the Fiber Hawaii exhibits and it distinguishes this exhibit
from the other fiber exhibits in town which feature one technique.
Fiber Hawaii 2012 was juried by Susan Taber Avila, Professor of Design (Textiles & Fashion)
at the University of California, Davis and a Chutian Scholar at Wuhan Textile University in
Wuhan, China. Ms. Avila gave a lecture titled "TEXT/ile" in which she discussed many artists
who incorporate words and letters into their textile work. She also shared photos of her own
work and the process she uses to create layers of stitching with a sewing machine on water
soluble material that dissolves and leaves an intricate web of thread. Sometimes she
incorporates words culled from Internet spam. Her piece in our exhibit features starburst
patterns of layered threads. She discusses some of her thoughts about her jurying process in
the catalog juror's statement (a brief excerpt): "I realized that my own choices might
surprise or possibly even provoke the viewing audience. Ultimately I chose work that either
spoke to me or that I felt could help propel and inform the ongoing discussion about fiber
and the important significance of textiles."
The exhibit features 96 pieces by 63 artists chosen from a total of 130 entries. Yoko Haar
won the Indru and Gulab Watumull Award of Excellence for her ceramic piece titled "Trail
#7". Bud Spindt won the Merit Award sponsored by Pegge Hopper for his cast glass work
titled "Sun in a Basket". Kellie Vaughan won the Hawaii Craftsmen Merit Award for her work
"In the Language of Her bones". Darius Homayounpour won the Honorable Mention award
sponsored by Liz Train in memory of Shore Hodge Lipsher who was co-chair of the first Fiber
Hawaii exhibit. Patricia Steinhoff won the Honorable Mention sponsored by the Hawaii
Handweavers Hui. Melanie Marlo, Linda Sjogren and Ualani Davis all won Hawaii Craftsmen
Honorable Mention awards.
The Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and Arts acquisition committee came to the exhibit
and gave out five Acquisition Awards. Congratulations to Bud Spindt (two awards), Charlene
Hughes, Lori Uyehara and Susan Taber Avila!
Thank you again to all the volunteers who helped put this exhibit together! A big mahalo to
the Honolulu Museum of Art School director Vince Hazen and his staff for the gallery space
and their help with lighting and signage.
Installing an exhibit is always a big job and we have to comment that many of the entrants
made our job harder this year. Many pieces did not have any thought given to the
installation! We had to nail or pin right through the fabric or paper. In one case we had to
put a hanging device on a frame back. In many shows this would not be acceptable. If
needed, artists should sew Velcro or fabric sleeves or tabs to the back of their artwork and if
the work needs a dowel or stick in the sleeve to hang, the artist should supply one. The
installation crew should not be expected to hunt down dowels or pin together hems or
potentially damage fragile work with nails. Give your work the professional look it deserves
and avoid the possibility of being rejected for not being installation-ready.

Mamiko Carroll will be designing the work
flow in the HC office to create a more sustainable organizational
structure in the office. In doing this she will also be taking care of
many of the HC office manager's tasks starting in mid November.
She comes in with a strong background in office management as
well as being a textile artist and Aloha Knitter.
Her design work can be seen in Knitty, Stitch 'N Bitch Nation, Stitch 'N Bitch: The Happy
Hooker, Get Hooked, and Knitscene, among other publications. In 2011, she began
working with Cooperative Press as the series editor for the Fresh Designs Crochet books.
Mamiko will be in the HC office at Marks on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. You can also
leave a message at 521-3282 or email her at [email protected]

MEMBERS' WEB PAGE POLICY CHANGE
HC is no longer able to afford to create webpages for free for its members. HC must pay the
webmaster to create a member webpage and that costs almost as much as the dues
so it doesn't make economic sense. Beginning now the basic cost of a web page for members
will be $25 (still an incredibly good deal!).
For more info, click HERE.
NOTICE: We will be checking the web pages against the membership list. If your
membership is not current, we will be removing your page. We'll be sending out notices
before we delete, but it's easier if you make sure you're paid up. Please

NEEDED!
AHA HANA LIMA 2013 Coordinator
Liz Jackson has had to step down so we will need a new 'Aha chairperson. The media
coordinators are: Suzanne Wolfe for ceramics; Hugh Jenkins for lampwork glass; and Liz Train
for fiber.
NEWSLETTER EDITOR (comes with a stipend)
January will be my last issue. I have some things I have to do. I will be able to help you and
will continue to contribute (and I hope more of the membership will too) with photos and
such. It's been educational for someone with relatively weak computer skills but it's been fun
and a good excuse to attend everything and ask questions. There is a template on Constant
Contact. You should own a digital camera and be able to write a paragraph or two. I
accumulate the entries and photos throughout the month, then take 2 or 3 evenings to clean
them up and assemble them and Kay as president, adds and fine tunes.

Karen Gally; Shige Miyamoto, Emiko Kuraoka and Amy Goo (David Kuraoka's mother and sister); Jennifer
Owen.
Honolulu Museum of Art First Hawaiian Center
999 Bishop Street, October 3 to January 11, 2013
Progressions: Recent Ceramics by David Kuraoka and Jennifer Owen showcases the
extraordinary talent of two ceramic artists.
David Kuraoka, whose commitment to ceramics has earned him recognition as a Living
Treasure of Hawai'i, presents his ongoing series Tall Necks, a body of work in porcelain and
stoneware. Born on Kaua'i, Kuraoka recently retired as professor and head of ceramics at San
Francisco State University and maintains studios in the Bay Area and Kaua'i.
Jennifer Owen's latest series Gathering Places was inspired by walking through buildings
designed by Frank Gehry and sculptures created by Richard Serra. Owen combines geometric
and organic forms to create sculptures that symbolize places for people to converge and
contemplate. Owen is an Assistant Professor at University of Hawai'i Maui College.
Evolution: Mixed Media Works by Karen Gally
This exhibition brings together Gally's 10-year evolution from large quilts, through mixed
media, and, finally, graphite drawings. Connecting the varied media is an obsessive attention
to detail and consistent visual language of metaphorical and botanical imagery that,
according to the artist, relates to concepts of vulnerability, danger, hope, power and
protection.

SOARING VOICES: Contemporary Ceramics by Women of Japan
Maui Arts and Cultural Center, Until January 6, 2013
This international traveling museum exhibition presents the rich and innovative ceramic
culture of Japan through the exquisite works of 25 female artists. Four generations of awardwinning artists, working in both sculptural and traditional forms, demonstrate the superb
creativity of women in a field generally governed by men.
Participating Artists:
Ikuko Ando, Masuko Emi, Sachiko Fujino, Fuku Fukumoto, Kakun Hayashi, Kyoko Hori, Nanako
Kaji, Chieko Katsumata, Eiko Kishi, Junko Kitamura, Shoko Koike, Kiyoko Koyama, Atsuko
Kubota, Yuriko Matsuda, Kimiyo Mishima, Yuki Nakaigawa, Yasuko Sakurai, Mariko Shibata,
Ayumi Shigematsu, Sachiko Shimizu, Etsuko Tashima, Kyoko Tokumaru, Asuka Tsuboi
We honor these pioneering women who have passed on: Takako Araki, Kyo Tsuji
Discover works that demonstrate a range of methods, materials and motifs, many inspired
from the natural world, ancient literature and Noh traditions, and some charming ceramic
surprises. The curators hope that these eloquent works of Japan's outstanding women artists
will move viewers with a Japanese beauty and serenity whose existence seems to have been
forgotten in this age of technology and globalization.
Soaring Voices is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue produced by the Museum of
Contemporary Ceramic Art at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. It
features full-color photographs of the ceramics and individual essays by the artists who tell
their own stories and explain their diverse techniques, mediums and influences.. The
catalogue also includes a substantial essay section written by Louise Cort of the Smithsonian's
Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and other highly recognized curators who explain the evolution of
women's roles in ceramic making in Japan and why an exhibition of this nature takes place at
this time.

ARTIST OPPORTUNITIES
The Window at Mark's Garage is a wonderful mini-exhibition space available to all HC
members for month-long displays. Most of 2013 is open. Take advantage! Contact Barbara
Guidage for more info.
Ceramics by Barbara Guidage
Window Artist Procedure:
Hawaii Craftsmen has some small boxes available to display your pieces if you do not have
your own. They may not be exactly what you need. They may have to be cleaned or painted
prior to your using them.
You can bring your own display boxes, fabric, etc, to set up your display. Some other items
other artists have suggested are - scissors, tape, double-stick tape, fishing line to hang any
items.
The window area is approximately 4'H X 6'W X 2'D. There are 3 - 4 hooks attached to the roof
of the window for you to hang lightweight items.
The back wall is a sliding glass door so you cannot attach anything to the back wall. Items
must stand alone. Think about elevating your art off the floor so that it can be above the
bottom of the window ledge. You don't want to cut off the bottom of your pieces.
You must label and price your pieces. We will need a copy for the HC Windows sales book.
You will also need to make your own signage for the window.
If you are planning a reception it must be coordinated with The Arts at Marks Garage and
Hawaii Craftsmen. It would be a good idea to check on the dates available, when you are
setting up your display, so that you can schedule your reception as soon as possible.
