The heart of the film takes place in the South Bay of Southern California, the Mecca of beach volleyball. From Manhattan Beach’s sprawling strand to its famous pier, the sand, surf and sunsets play an integral part in the telling of Cameron’s story. After all, a Beach Kings is truly a product of this environment. Not to be outdone, the bustling nightlife of the beach scene provides the perfect backdrop for Beach Kings characters to act and react. Pictured below, “Pier Avenue” in Hermosa Beach. PRESS KIT 16 www.BeachKingsDVD.com PRESS KIT 17 www.BeachKingsDVD.com PRESS KIT 18 www.BeachKingsDVD.com PRESS KIT 19 www.BeachKingsDVD.com Despite growing up in an “athlete’s world,” film directing has always been my primary passion and number one goal in life. For this reason, I find it awkwardly-perfectly-appropriate that my film career has begun focused on a topic that is so integral to who I am and where I come from. It was the perfect bridge for me as I took my first step towards my life’s passion. I was in my early twenties and a new resident to the South Bay beaches when I was first told about the Green Flash (the international title for the film). Needless to say, it stuck with me despite the fact I have never seen one. My gut reaction determined it rumor, another urban myth, but my own research and witnessing of photographical documentation have proven the phenomenon to be quite true. I still time my evening activities around my hopes to catch a brilliant green flash, but I don’t tell anybody that. Instead, I look like another person jogging or In describing Beach Kings I feel myself grow defensive of the claim that Cameron’s story is my own autobiography. It is not. But at the same time, I’m portraying a character who has found his greatest comfort zones on the athletic playing fields of his life, and I can’t help but know that he is a part of me. My goal throughout the writing process and production was to capture the reality of sport action and to illustrate just how extreme the mental process of being a highly competitive athlete truly is. There’s a heavy misconception that elite athletes live a life of purely pampered luxury. The mind doesn’t allow it. Cameron is a character who is truly tormented by his dilemma. In order for him to be great at what makes him most comfortable in his life he must surrender a great deal of his own self control. I believe there is vulnerability here that makes him very real and at the same time very dangerous. Partnerships are a strong dynamic throughout this story. Cameron explores several one-on-one relationships that range from friendships to teammates to personal. I believe Cameron’s personal relationship with Mia is the key to Cameron’s being able to better understand himself and the core to his finding happiness. Labeling is another theme that resurfaces throughout the story. Cameron as a character is plagued by his belief that the world labeled him an athlete at a very young age, and he is caught up in a personal struggle to fight this label or to accept it. In another instance, Mia represents an open-minded character with a heavy bias towards “jocks” and a personal reluctance to be involved with one. Her breakthrough on this front paves the path for Cameron’s own breakthroughs. One of my favorite aspects of Beach Kings is the short-lived meet and greets we encounter with various characters. We were blessed to bring in an amazing support cast of performers, both actors and athletes, who instantly provided an authenticity to what we were seeing and doing. You simply can not fake that. Ultimately, Beach Kings is about greatness and the often times uncomfortable, personal challenges we must overcome in our pursuit to achieve greatness. PRESS KIT 20 www.BeachKingsDVD.com
