After more than 21 years
of publishing the Westside
Weekly, no issue has probably generated more comment than last week’s photo
of a murdered Rasul
Gresham.
It was a very graphic
photo that produced both pro
and con from readers.
(See two letters on Page
6 concerning that picture.)
Gresham, 33, was shot
four times in his head, according to police; when he
was riding his bike on the
5900 Block of Pine Street
last September 16. He was
shot around 11 in the morning in broad daylight.
Many of our readers said
they were concerned about
Gresham’s relatives’ reactions to that picture. After all,
they have lost a father, husband, son and brother, and
now, must see that soul gripping picture of their love one’s
body lying in his own pool of
blood.
And, many others felt the
picture would help to wake
up the community that has
become “immune” to the violence in this neighborhood.
And, yes, there were a few
who felt Gresham got what he
was going to get for the kind
of life he was living on the
streets. Neighbors had told
the Westside Weekly that
Gresham was no angel and
that he hung “with the wrong
crown.”

Meet Derrick and Eric
King. Both brothers stand 6
feet and 2 inches tall and both
weigh more than 220 pounds.

When it comes to high
school football, these two
young brothers are dangerous on the football field.
They have been part of
the defensive unit that has
kept the Overbrook football
team powerful for the last
four years.
Eric and Derrick King were
born on January 20, 1993. Even
though they are not identical
twins, they do a lot of things
alike. They eat the same foods,
they like the same type of music. They just don’t like the
same type of girls.
Since the age of 15, both
brothers have had dreams of
becoming star football players. They used to play street
football on 63rd and Race
Street, behind the Rite Aid
store. When they were
younger, they tried to play
Pop Warner football, but because of their huge size they
were always denied a spot on
the team.
It wasn’t until they to
tried for the Overbrook junior varsity team that they were
allowed to play organized

“I think we (Overbrook)
are going to go to the championship,” said Derrick King,
who was injured in last week’s
game against George Washington, a game that Brook lost
27-8. “I feel we are going to be

seniors, who can lead us to the
championship.”

children’s ensemble as members of the theatre.

will demonstrate her unique
use of encaustic, a painting
process utilizing hot beeswax
and pigment (see picture).
She seals wood panels
with wax and applies color
by adhering cloth and paper
with transparent wax and alternating this with layers of
oil paint.
With these processes she
creates a texture
and depth that
draws one into the
substance and
spirit beneath the
surface.

You were absolutely right
that people would be upset
by the graphic photo placed
in the Westside Weekly. It
was so unnecessary. You
could have run the story without the picture. Did you think
about his family, friends, or
your readers at all when you
did this?
I was sick to my stomach
yesterday when I was on the
bus, on my way to class, and
the body was still in the street
covered by a sheet. I thought
what kind of society have we
become, that we are so desensitized by a dead body in
the street. So it should be
easy for you to understand
that your picture literally
makes me want to vomit.
To make matters worst,
there are no witnesses, no
suspects, and you running this
picture will not help us find
the savage murderers! Let me
just make my point. As far as
the news is concerned, Mr.
Rasul R. Gresham is just another “man shot dead in West
Philly.”
I actually expected more
from you. The Westside
Weekly always seemed to be
about us, for us, supporting
us, informing us, and being
true to our community. And
if you guys lose that — what
is the point? Why even have
a neighborhood paper?

Dear Westside;
I am sure my email is one
of many you may have received regarding the cover of
the issue that clearly shows
Rasul Rahman Gresham lying in a pool of his own blood
as a paramedic seems to be
packing up to leave, realizing
there is nothing she can do.
I must admit, I was
shocked to see the graphic
picture and article on something that just occurred yesterday. At the same time, I
have to applaud your courage because I agree, maybe
its time our community realize what kind of madness is
occurring in our neighborhood.
The death of Mr.
Gresham brings me sadness,
because regardless of what
kind of life he led, no one
deserves to be shot down in
the street. What is even sadder is the fact that when I
arrived home from work yesterday, it was business as
usual around the way.

not advised me while I was at
work what he saw and heard,
I would have never known
this occurred because only
Channel 3 had a 2 minute
blurb on what happened.
What angers me however,
is the disregard for all of the
people that may have been
outside at that time (11 AM).
Anyone could have been
caught up in that mess, especially considering the time
of day and how busy Pine
Street can be.
What angers me is the
fact that I have to live in a
war zone when I go to work
every day and do what I can
to have a decent home and
life like a lot of my other
neighbors.
We all should be angry
because it’s getting to the point
of being ridiculous. Everyone
that lives in this area knows
despite a few, we live in a
decent community. It’s just
these kids are off the hook and
seems to have lost the values
that a lot of our longtime residents have and instilled in their
kids which kept this area decent for this long.

I am tired of it and I am
sure there are many who feel
the same way. Its a sad day
when a black man getting
gunned down in broad daylight becomes such a “norm”
it isn’t covered on the news.
My condolences go out to
Mr. Gresham’s family, friends
and loved ones, because his
kids are left without a father
and his mother has lost her
son.

to this issue of the Westside

When the two married in
1882, they eventually reared
three children - Chester Thomas, Edna Harris and Ruth
Green — in Chestertown,
Maryland.

the Satterfield Thomas family with “an awful lot of”
children.
Last month, more than
75 of George and Lydia’s
descendents gathered together on Belmont Grove
atop Belmont Plateau in
Fairmount Park to celebrated
their 56th Family Reunion.
“I guess there are about
150 of us,” said West Philly
neighbor Patricia Young, a
great-granddaughter of the
couple.
The family held their first
reunion in 1954 as they celebrated George and Lydia’s
50th anniversary. The couple
was married in 1904. He died
1957; she in 1963.
At the reunion, their descendents came from far and
wide, although most live in
Maryland, Pennsylvania and
New Jersey.

A Fundraiser For Mantua's Future

Conditions of Sheriff’s Sale for
JUDICIAL/FORECLOSURE SALE
Ten percent of the highest bid for each property auctioned off shall be deposited in cash,
certified check, attorney’s check or money
order with the Sheriff by each bidder when his
bid is registered, provided that in no case shall
less than Six Hundred Dollars ($600.00) be
deposited, otherwise upon failure or refusal to
make such deposit, the bidder shall lose all
benefit of his bid and the property may be
immediately offered again and sold unless a
second bid has been registered, then, the second highest bidder will take the property at the
highest bid price.
Additionally,
where there is active bidding, the highest
bidder, and the second highest bidder, if any
must post the entire amount of the cost of the
distribution policy for the property at the
time of sale by cash, certified check,
attorney’s check or money order with the
Sheriff.
The balance of the purchase money must be deposited in cash, certified check, attorney’s check or money order
together with a Deed poll for execution by the
highest bidder to the Sheriff at his office within
30 days from the time of the sale. An extension
of time for an additional 30 days may be
granted at the discretion of the Sheriff upon
receipt of written request from the buyer
requesting the same, except when a second
bidder has been duly registered. Also, if the
first bidder does not complete settlement with
the Sheriff within the thirty (30) day time limit
and a second bid was registered at the sale, the
second bidder shall be granted the same thirty
(30) day time limit to make settlement with the
Sheriff on his second bid. Thereafter, the Sheriff shall be at liberty to return the writ to court.
A second bid must be registered on any property immediately after it is sold. The second
bidder must present the same amount of deposit that the highest bidder delivers to the
Sheriff at the sale. An extension of time under
no circumstances will be granted or honored
by the Sheriff whenever a second bid is registered on a property at the sale.
The first bid or opening bid on each property
shall be a sum sufficient to pay all Sheriff’s
costs including advertising, all taxes, water
rents and municipal claims due to the City of
Philadelphia. If there is no other bid price
above the opening bid price, the property shall
be sold by the auctioneer to the attorney on the
writ at that price.
The deposit by any bidder who fails to comply
with the above conditions of sale shall be
forfeited and the funds will be applied to the
Sheriff’s cost, then to any municipal claims
that the City of Philadelphia has on the property. Finally, if a balance still remains, a
Sheriff’s Distribution Policy will be ordered
and the money will be distributed accordingly.
No personal checks, drafts or promises to pay
will be accepted in lieu of cash, certified
checks, attorney’s checks or money orders
made payable to the Sheriff of Philadelphia
County.
The Sheriff reserves the right to grant further
extensions of time to settle and further reserves the right to refuse bids from bidders
who have failed to enter deposits on their bids,
failed to make settlement, or make fraudulent
bids, or any other behavior which causes disruption of the Sheriff Sale. Said bidders shall be
so refused for the sale in which said behavior
occurred and for said further period of time as
the Sheriff in his discretion shall determine.
The Sheriff will not acknowledge a deed poll to
any individual or entity using an unregistered
fictitious name and may, at his discretion,
require proof of identity of the purchaser or
the registration of fictitious names. The bid of
an unregistered fictitious name shall be forfeited as if the bidder failed to meet the terms
of sale.
All bidders are advised to remain at the sale
until after the last property is sold. The Sheriff
reserves the right to re-sell any property at
any time before the end of the sale, upon the
successful bidders’ failure to tender the required deposit. The Sheriff reserves the right to
postpone or stay the sale of any property in
which the attorney on the writ has not appeared and is not present at the sale.
Prospective purchasers are directed to the
Web site of the Philadelphia Bureau of Revision of Taxes, (BRT) “brtweb.phila.gov” for
a fuller description of the properties listed.
Properties can be looked up by the BRT
number – which should be cross checked with
the address. Prospective purchasers are also
directed to the Philadelphia Department of
Records, at Room 154 City Hall, 215-6861483 and to its website at http://
philadox.phila.govwhere they can view the
deed to each individual property and find the
boundaries of the property. PROSPECTIVE
PURCHASERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR
DETERMINING THE NATURE, LOCATION, CONDITION AND BOUNDARIES
OF THE PROPERTIES THEY SEEK TO
PURCHASE.
The “BRT #” refers to a unique number
assigned by the City Bureau of Revision of
Taxes to each property in the City for the
purpose of assessing it for taxes. This number
can be used to obtain descriptive information
about the property from the BRT website.
