A Welcome from the
Dear Guests,
Tonight is a night of celebration.
Thank you for being here at our annual fundraising gala. It is
inspiring to have such a wonderful turnout. We are honoured
by your presence and look forward to enjoying your company as we hope you will enjoy ours.
Our annual gala is a very special occasion because it allows the Unionville Home Society
the opportunity to celebrate, thank and shine a spotlight on individuals and institutions
taking long term care and seniors’ need to heart. We are so incredibly touched that you
have made it a point to support us and help us to continue our important work.
For more than 40 years, the Unionville Home Society has operated as a not-for-profit,
providing hundreds of elders each year with quality care in warm, secure and holistic
environments.
Tonight, however, is not about what we have done or the progress we have made to this
point. Rather, it is our hope that you will draw inspiration from the fact that more needs
to be done to advance seniors’ care and why we will need your ongoing support.
So much of our funding comes from government programs, which especially in this difficult
economy, does not cover the cost of quality care. This is why we are together this
evening. Please know that whenever you make a contribution to the Unionville Home
Society, 100 percent of your gift is put right into care and service delivery. Every dollar
raised tonight is dedicated to our Project Comfort Excellence initiative.

Unionville Home Society
This is a 3 year initiative focused on providing excellent equipment, supports and programs
for the residents at Union Villa. The money will be used to purchase high quality beds,
pressure relief and pressure reduction mattresses, provision of palliative care programs
and essentially provide comfort that goes above the norm or minimum standards.
As your seniors’ care partner, we are constantly striving to do better so that we can help
your family, your friends and your neighbors receive quality care in warm and welcoming
environments. Our work isn’t easy and innovation in elder care won’t come overnight. But
we do know that the demand for our services is growing and our elders deserve the best
care we can give them.
Our goal is that you end the night with renewed commitment and compassion for quality
seniors’ care. Enjoy and have fun !

Giving from the Heart
A letter by Alex Miles, Grandson, Age 16
Dear Guests,
For those of you who know my grandfather and grandmother, Elson
and Joyce Miles, you may also know that they recently sold their
farm to the town of Markham. Well they are slowly donating back to
the community that has given so much to them for so long. Elson
has been farming at Stouffville Road and Warden Avenue for as
long as I’ve known. It’s such a gorgeous place that my family and I
have enjoyed for many years and we will all miss it very much.
You may have seen Elson’s new 2011 BMW around Markham, but
despite their nice car and expensive dinners here and there, my grandparents are sticking to canned
soup and chicken pot pies. Most of their food is usually prepared in their microwave that they have
had since my father and uncle were working on the farm. Where they are definitely not frugal is with the
wonderful things they do for the town of Markham.
My family was recently brought to an Recognition reception to celebrate the Miles donation of 1 million
dollars to the Unionville Seniors Society. Many members of council, and the mayor, Frank Scarpitti, all
said a small speech at the event. They mentioned how kind and generous the donation was and how
much it is going to help the already lovely building. When my grandfather walked up to say a few words,
his first sentence was “Thank you all for coming tonight” . He said this at an event where he was donating
one million dollars - can you believe that? So, as I stood there after my name was called up as part of
the family, I realized that not much had been said about the type of people my grandparents are. The
speeches focused more on the donation and not much was said about how my grandfather puts everyone before himself, or how my grandmother has our family
go out for wonderful dinners and thanks each and every one
of us for just being there.
For myself, I have learned many lessons growing up with
these fantastic grandparents. My grandfather and my father
are both men who understand and have taught me that to
get anywhere in life you need to work as hard as you can.
My only wish is that I will turn out to be a man equal to
the men that they are. I hope that they will continue to
be respected and recognized for being the humble and
generous people that they have been to the community.
Selling the Miles Hectors farm couldn’t have happened to two better people – my grandparents, Elson
and Joyce Miles.
