We are writing to outline the program and provide you with informatio n on registration and housing. PROGRAM The program, outlined in the enclosed attachment, is designed to provide pragmatic approaches to the many challenges that face us. The theme of the meeti ng is "Solutions at the Interface." We will focus on the transition from pre-medical to medical school and on the trans ition from medical school to residency. Among the topics in the first interface are the changing applicant pool and other admissions issues. The interface between medical school and residency is becoming a compelling issue as the emphasis on caree r advising, Dean's letters and residency pressures combi ne to challenge us in providing the best advice possible to our students. To orient us to this array of issues, the keyno te speaker will be Dr. Gus Swanson. Dr. Swanson has been the Director of Academic Affairs of the AAMC for sixteen years and is the one individual best suited to update us on the most recent data on the changing applicant pool and the results of his special plenary session on the problems around the resid ency match process. While Dr. Swanson will update us on the problems, the program will focus on the variety of solut ions or partial solutions that can be found among the schools in the region. We believe you will find the program provocativ e and stimulating. To carry on with the Asilomar tradi tion of a group activity on Monday night, we are planning to mix it up with an hour of square dancing (Bring your square dancing duds!), followed by disco dancing. All in all we are planning a memorable and worthwhile four days for you. PROGRAM PARTICIPATION Again this year the Western GSA group will subsidize a portion of the expenses for one additional OSR representative from each medical school. By defraying the expenses of food and lodging, this support is intended to increase the attendance of minority students. Student affairs deans at each medical school should forward the name of the student who .is to receive this support to Dr. John Yergan at the address listed below. Document from the collections of the AAMC Not to be reproduced without permission ARRANGEMENTS Enclosed is a Housing Preference/Registration Form. Please forward the completed form to the Conference Registrar, Ms. Lyn Logan Buchanan, with a postmark no later than February 23, 1987, in order to avoid a $15 late fee. The registration fee should be submitted with the Housing/Registration Form. When housing has been assigned, a written confirmation will be sent to you along with a bill for the appropriate housing fee. Housing fees, which include all meals, must be submitted no later than March 27, 1987, in order to hold the housing assignment. Because single rooms are not available and we do not have as many doubles as we would like, we suggest that if you have roommate preferences you state them on the form. You will have at least one roommate. Cancellations of registration and housing may be made in writing or by telephone and will be accepted by the Conference Registrar through March 27, 1987. Please do not fail to make your reservation now and join us for an exciting conference. Attendance is by invitation only and we reserve the right to limit registration. If you have any input concerning the conference, please contact one of the members of the Program Committee listed on the back of the program. We look forward to seeing you at Asilomar! D. The purpose of the session will be to facilitate informal discussions on issues of interest among members of our group. I will be scheduling a meeting room for 4:00 6:00PM on Sunday, April 26, 1987. Several members of our group advised me that the Sunday afternoon time would be a good one since other activities would not be underway, and because it would leave time for additional informal discussion as the conference proceeds. It should be a good way for us to get started. I encourage you to arrange your travel plans so that you can begin the meeting by joining your colleagues Sunday afternoon. Thank you.
