Invitation
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
We are extremely happy to invite you to take part in the 48th congress of ERA-EDTA which will be held in Prague in June
2011. Hopefully we will attract you both by our outstanding scientific programme and the beauty of our city.
Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, lies in the heart of Europe and is now easily accessible from all major European
destinations. The Convention Centre in Prague, the venue of the meeting, has a marvellous view of the Prague Castle and
the old city and is located only two or three underground stops (5 minutes) from the centre of the city which gives the
participants the chance to enjoy also its rich cultural and social life.
The scientific programme was carefully prepared by the Scientific Committee and is aimed at covering all major areas of
basic and clinical nephrology in a form of specific tracks which should provide a comprehensive view of the recent progress
in clinical nephrology, dialysis and transplantation. Special attention will be paid to the activities of different work groups
and the presentation of the late breaking clinical trials. As usual, CME sessions will precede the official opening of the
congress. We believe that they will attract many young nephrologists.
Prague is well known for its marvellous historical centre. You can start your visit in the centre near the Powder Tower
and proceed along the so called King´s Road through the Old Town Square and Charles Bridge towards the Prague Castle.
Hopefully, you will be enchanted by the atmosphere of the well preserved baroque city with the interspersed Gothic
churches and Art Nouveau buildings demonstrating different periods of the gradual transformation of the city from the
medieval residence to the modern cosmopolitan centre. For those who decide to explore also the other parts of the Czech
Republic we can recommend the well known spas of Carlsbad and Marienbad, the city of Kutna Hora located near to the
medieval silver mines and beautiful Renaissance cities of Cesky Krumlov, Trebon and Jindrichuv Hradec.
We are looking forward to seeing you in Prague next year!

General Information
ABOUT PRAGUE
Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic, situated in
the heart of Europe ranks amongst the most impressive
historical cities in the world. Prague was established as a
town when the Prague Castle was built in 870. In the 11th
century, the first Czech king, Vratislav II, chose Prague as
his capital. The city has always played an important part
in the history of the nation, country and Europe. Since
medieval times, Prague has been distinguished as one of
the most beautiful cities in the world. Prague is not only
a centre of cultural movements dating back for centuries
(Art from every period in history can be found here), it
also exhibits a unique collection of historical monuments,
dominated by the Prague Castle. Prague occupies both
banks of the Vltava River and consists of 6 districts: the Old
Town, which includes Josefov (the Jewish Quarter, which
remains intact despite World War II), New Town, Lower
Town, Hradčany and Vyšehrad. These districts house the
majority of historical landmarks, museums and galleries.
Charles University, founded in 1348 is one of the oldest
universities in Europe. In 1992, the historical core of the city
(866 hectares) was listed in the UNESCO World Cultural
and Natural Heritage Register as a town with a unique
and lively blend of Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque,
Art Nouveau and Cubist architecture. Prague was one of
nine European cities awarded the title European City of
Culture in 2000. Prague has around 1.2 million inhabitants.
For more information, visit the website www.pis.cz
AIRPORT
Prague International airport handles flights from within
Europe and from overseas. It is located 30-45 minutes
by car from the centre of Prague. There are good
connections between the airport and the city centre by
public transport – buses and taxis.
Prague Airport website: www.prg.aero
CLIMATE
Prague is a city with a “mild continental climate”.
Temperatures in June varies between 19°C and 25°C.

RESTAURANTS - CZECH CUISINE
Czech cuisine is typical of Middle European gastronomy,
yet clearly reflects a number of Czech elements - e.g.
bread or fruit dumplings, various kinds of soups, sauces,
numerous potato dishes, cakes and a wide range of
festive dishes. In general, Czech gastronomy means
roasted pork with dumplings and sauerkraut, potato
pancakes, plum dumplings and bilberry cakes… and, of
course, Czech drinks - primarily beer and first-rate wines
from South Moravia, not to mention “Slivovice”, a clear
Czech plum brandy and “Becherovka” a delicious herbal
elixir with legendary aphrodisiac qualities. People usually
have lunch between 12.00 and 14.00, sit down for dinner
between 18.00 and 21.00. However, it is possible to dine
throughout the whole day.
SHOPPING
Shops in Prague are normally open Monday-Friday from
09:00-18:00, Saturday from 09.00-12.00. Most of the
shops in the city centre are open every week day from
09.00-20.00. All major credit cards are accepted.
TAXI
When taking a taxi, be sure that the taxi is equipped with
a permanently installed yellow roof lamp with the TAXI
sign in black letters. The registration number, company
name and the price list including the basic rate, rate per
kilometre and one-minute-waiting rate must be displayed
on both front doors of the cab. These prices must
correspond with the prices set on the meter in the cab.
Customers are recommended to order a taxi with nonstop dispatching offices where the information on fares
is available in advance. In the city centre taxis are easy
to hail from the street but we strongly recommend that
you use hotel taxis or obtain taxis by phone through the
13
General Information
radio taxi service e.g. AAA (+420-14014), City taxi (+420257257257) or Speed cars (+420-224234234).

Time zone, i.e. GMT+1 hour. Daylight saving time (GMT+2
hours) is in effect from the end of March until the end of
September.

Service is almost always included in hotel and restaurant
bills. A further tip of a few coins is appropriate. Some
typical percentages for tipping are: Restaurants 5-10%,

TRANSPORTATION IN PRAGUE
Prague Public Transit Co. Inc. is the main public transport
operator in the Czech Republic. Almost two thousand
metro trains, trams and buses are dispatched every day in
Prague and the surrounding region. You must purchase a

The Metro operates daily from 5.00 to 24.00. We
recommend that you use this kind of transport as the
fastest and cheapest form of moving around the city.

Frequently Asked Questions
about Registrations
1. I have become a member of ERA-EDTA very recently
and I have not yet received my Membership Card and
number.
If the deadline is approaching you can contact the
ERA-EDTA Congress Office (Email: registrations@
era-edta.org, fax +39-0521-959242) or the ERA-EDTA
Membership Office ([email protected]) and
explain the problem. Your position will be verified and
you will be provided with your number (either a provisional one, or your definitive Membership number).
2. I am a member of ERA-EDTA but when I type my
membership number in the form the system says my
status is not regular.
There are two cases for this to happen: 1. You have
not yet paid this year’s membership fee. 2. You have
made your payment only one or two days ago. In
case 1, settle your membership fee and wait for one
week before trying again to register for the congress.
In case 2, try again to register after a full week has
passed from your payment.
3. I have made my online registration before February
28, and ticked the “Paid by direct money transfer”
box, but I have been able to make the payment only
after that date. Will I be considered as registered or
not?
By making your payment after the deadline you have
missed the opportunity of the Early Registration rate.
Your registration will be held in a “stand-by” until you
pay the difference between the Late Registration rate
and the Early Registration one. You will receive your
confirmation only after settling the full amount.
4. I have registered and paid well in advance, but I have
not yet received my badge. Should I contact the ERAEDTA Congress Office to enquire?
Badges and congress materials are sent after the respective deadlines, so if you have registered several
weeks before the deadline please wait. However, if
the deadline is already two weeks past, please contact the Congress Office.
5. I have submitted an abstract and my Institute will
authorize me to attend the congress only if I have
a poster or an oral communication to present. The
deadline for early registrations is too early for me to
know if my abstract is accepted. Has ERA-EDTA taken
into consideration this kind of problem?
Yes. The only exception to the deadline for early registrations is precisely the case of people who have an
accepted abstract and have not registered before the
deadline. You will be able to register after February
28th, but earlier than May 23rd, and pay the early registration fee. You will find information about it in the
acceptance letter of your abstract.
6. I have received my badge, but now I cannot find it.
Will I be able to get a replacement on site?
Yes, but you will have to pay 10 euro for it.
7. I have been registered by a company and I would like
to receive my badge in advance. Can I obtain it from
the ERA-EDTA Congress Office?
No, your badge and vouchers have been sent to the
sponsor. The company that invited you is responsible
for passing them to you.
8. I have registered for the congress, afterwards a company has offered to sponsor my participation. Can I
transfer my original registration to a colleague?
No. Each registration is strictly personal. You will have
your original registration refunded by ERA-EDTA, but
your colleague will have to make a new registration.
9. I am registering a group of doctors that my companies will sponsor. I am asked to provide addresses for
each of them, but I don’t have this information. What
can I do?
You should provide at least the name of the hospital
or other institution where each doctor works, and the
city.
10. I registered for the congress well in advance, but
now I have found I cannot attend. Can I transfer my
registration to a colleague?
No. Each registration is strictly personal. You can receive your money back (minus 25% for handling charges) if you cancel your registration before May 23rd, but
you cannot transfer it to anybody else.
11. I must cancel my registrations. Can I do it by phone?
No. Cancellations must be sent in writing (post, email
or fax). Please provide all the details that can help the
ERA-EDTA Congress Office to identify you correctly,
e.g. give your first name in full and not just the initials,
mention the type of registration you had, quote your
registration number if you have already received your
confirmation.
21
Frequently Asked Questions
about Registrations
12. I have cancelled my registration well before May 23,
but I have not yet received the refund I was promised.
All refunds of any kind are done only after the congress.
13. I have missed the Late Registration deadline. Can I
send a payment for the on-site registration fee and
pre-register anyway?
No. Between the deadline of May 23rd and the first
day of the congress no registration can be accepted
by the ERA-EDTA Congress Office. If you have reasons
for preferring not to pay directly on-site, you can order a money transfer from your bank in advance, and
bring the original proof of payment with you, to show
it to the staff at the registration counters when you
make your registration on site.
14. I will be able to attend this congress just for one day.
Can I pre-register for that specific date?
You can register for one day, but you can do it only on
site.
15. Can I send a cheque to pay my registration fee?
No. Due to substantial changes in the banking system
over the last few years, the time and costs for processing cheques have increased dramatically, so ERAEDTA cannot accept this form of payment any more.
22
16. I see that on the first day of the congress the registration counters will close at 18.00, but I expect to arrive not earlier than 18.30. Can I inform the Congress
Office in advance and ask to make an exception for
me? I don’t want to miss the Opening Ceremony.
You will have to register the next day. However you
will be admitted to the opening ceremony and to
the welcome cocktail anyway. Badge controls will be
done only for the scientific sessions.
17. When I register on site, will my credit card be charged
in the local currency?
No. The payment system by credit card is the same as
for the online registration made in advance and the
charges are in euro.
18. Is there any way for me to be able to pay in the local
currency?
You can pay in the local currency only if you register
on site and pay by cash. Please note that for practical issues the exchange rate will be determined a few
days before the congress.

NDT-EDUCATIONAL
A GROWING ENTERPRISE
WWW.NDT-EDUCATIONAL.ORG
NDT-Educational is now an eight year old electronic enterprise. The newsletter and the related website of this
E-journal collect the best lectures presented at the annual Congress of the Society as well as clinically oriented papers
and editorials of “Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation” and other first class medical journals such as the “Journal of
Clinical Investigation”.
Both CME lectures and full papers are open to all registered users (registration is free). We regularly publish surveys
on different aspects of Nephrology issues. Subject Editors act both as filters of the flowing literature as well as
evaluators of the clinical and basic science relevance of the papers they review.
During 2009 NDT-Educational grew tremendously and has now reached the 49,000 mark of stable electronic visits
per month (with more than 102,000 web pages downloaded) and the journal is regularly sent to more than 10,000
registered colleagues. We know that NDT-Educational is read in many countries where the opportunity of free access
to medical literature is limited and that our colleagues in those countries particularly appreciate our efforts.
The success of this endeavor is due to the generous, continuous contribution of our Subject Consultants, who are all
highly reputed European nephrologists/investigators with heavy academic and clinical duties.
Register for free at www.ndt-educational.org
and you will receive
the NDT-Educational e-journal every two weeks
and access to a number of CME Slide Presentations
mainly from the ERA-EDTA annual congresses.

- Free subscription to the journal Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation (12 issues per year) + NDT PLUS (6 issues per year).
Included in the payment of the “Full Fees” is a free print subscription to NDT and NDT-Plus. Every month NDT, one of the
world’s leading journals devoted to original clinical and laboratory research in nephrology, dialysis and transplantation,
provides readers with the latest clinical research in the field to improve patient care and outcomes; every other month,
NDT-Plus provides readers with essential educational and training articles that really benefit clinical care. NDT’s Impact
Factor of 3.306 (Thompson Reuters Journal Citation Reports, June 2010) makes NDT the leading European nephrology
journal.
- Free access to NDT (Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation) Online (including NDT-Plus Online).
All active ERA-EDTA members, except members who pay the “Reduced” fee, are entitled to receive free access to NDT
+ NDT-Plus Online. The online versions of the Journals have outstanding features: Electronic Table of Contents (eTOC)
alerts; Advanced Access publication; PowerPoint download of figures; CiteTrack; RSS Feeds; and PDA Access. Visit the
