Background- JSS, Sindhudurg
•  Since 1968 the scheme has been existing in
urban areas as “Shramik Vidyapeeth”
•  Supported by the Ministry of Human Resource
Development, Government of India, it was meant
only for industrial workers” & their families
•  There was no training institute for illiterates,
neo-literates, workers, under-privileged rural
masses
•  Eighty percent of the rural population was thus
denied opportunities to generate income

Birth of JSS, Sindhudurg
•  Has the distinction of being the
first ever JSS in a rural area in
the country
•  Mr. Suresh Prabhu, then Member of
Parliament of the area, diligently pursued
the issue of implementing the “Shramik
Vidyapeeth” scheme for the rural masses
•  In April 2000, rural areas were granted a
Shramik Vidyapeeth with a new name:
‘Jana Shikshan Sansthan’ (JSS)

Village Gharpi- a JSS Success
Story
•  The village is located in a hilly terrain with
no proper roads and transport facilities
•  The village school gives education only up
to the 4th Standard
•  The closest middle school is at a distance of
6 Km
•  Getting higher education is Difficult
especially for girls
•  Girls thus stop studying after 4th Standard

Village Gharpi
•  In June 2008, the joy of Seema, Varsha, Ashwini, Vasanti &
Darshana, five students from Gharpi village, knew no bounds.
•  They had achieved the impossible: Passed 8th Standard
Examination through National Open School.
•  The young girls give credit of their achievement to JSS
Sindhudurg, which roped in young college students to organize
special classes for these girls in a temple premises in the village
•  College students Yojana & Nayan toiled for almost 2 years,
wading their way even through floods, to impart education to these
girls
•  Encouraged by this success, the five girls are now planning to study
even more

Success story of Sunita Naik,
village Kalmath
"I was housewife, and had studied up to Matriculation. JSS taught
me how to make soaps, incense sticks and detergent powder. Now I
have started my own business in detergent making. I have created
my own brand TOP, which is giving tough competition even to the
established brands. I am making use of the Self Helf Group network
to market my product."

Success story of
Mr Naresh Kalmethar
Kalmethar hails from the fishing community in Malvan.
After taking training from JSS, he started his own coir
industry. Soon he started producing coir mats and
ropes. He now employs over local 60 persons
JSS gave Mr. Methar advance training in coir.
Mr. Kalmethar expanded his business to include
handicrafts, and seashell jewelry. He organized a month
long workshop for his craftsmen on seashell jewelry and
handicrafts. Immediately after that he started
production.
.
Kalmethar’s offerings- a plethora of coir and
seashell handicrafts, which is very much popular
all over the world.
Mr. Kalmetar is working on creating his own art and
crafts centre -Deep Arts n Craft Center. A dream project,
te centre is spread over 3 acres of land at Malvan and
will be ready within a year. This will be a training,
research, production, and marketing centre
