(critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity) in order for each student to be equipped to be college/career ready by the time of graduation.
We are honored to help promote an event in the Metro that will allow parents, teachers, students, and community members to wrestle with and have a candid
conversation about what it takes for the students of today to succeed in life and how the educational system impacts that success. The film highlights project-based learning, a best teaching and learning practice that is used and modeled in the West Fargo Public Schools.

Ted Dintersmith, a venture capitalist turned passionate 21st century education advocate, will be coming to Fargo on September 17, 2015, to host a showing of
his new feature-length film called “Most Likely to Succeed.” The film was featured at the Sundance film festival in January and received critical acclaim. He also has just
recently co-authored a book with Tony Wagner called Most Likely to Succeed. Ted recently shared his experiences making this film at TEDxFargo in July 2015. His

West Fargo Public Schools invites you to participate in this FREE community event where the film will be screened at the Fargo Theatre beginning at 7:15pm
on September 17. After the film, there will be a time for reflection and conversation about continuous innovation of education in the Metro, including a panel discussion
with Ted Dintersmith, Dr. David Flowers, Dr. Jeff Schatz, and Dr. Lynne Kovash.

Farm to School is a national movement aimed to connect communities with local, fresh, healthy foods served
in schools. North Dakota Farm to School week is celebrated Sept 14-20. West Fargo Public Schools is now
purchasing a portion of its food locally as part of a Farm to School program.
Our school district has started a new partnership with Fresh Connect Food Hub in Fergus
Falls, MN. We are purchasing fresh, local fruits and vegetables grown right here in our
area. Farmers and producers from the region are growing items specifically for schools
and other institutions who are purchasing from Fresh Connect. Our school district is excited to be involved by supporting area farmers and bringing the farm to you!
Locally grown means fresher, tastier, and more nutritious foods for our students. Food
Service Director Jan Sliper notices the difference of local foods. “The quality and freshness of the fruits and vegetables is outstanding. When students are served fruits and vegetables that taste
good, we know they will consume more”, said Sliper.
We are committed to supporting the development of healthy eating habits for our students by offering a variety of delicious fruits and vegetables on our menus. Your school’s salad bar features a nice variety of fresh
produce. The cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes are from local growers. Give them a try!
Registration night for Cub Scouts Pack #274
Cub Scout – pack #274 – Parent Meeting is 7 pm @ Horace Elementary School Multipurpose Room, Tuesday, September 14. The boys will meet who is in their den, their den leader and get to have some fun with the Den Master
while the parents fill out registration forms and pay their annual dues.
Auditions for Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre’s original musical production of “WIZARD OF OZ” will be held on Monday, September 14th 2:45-4:45pm in the gym at Horace Elementary.
Up to 75 children are needed to play the roles of DOROTHY, TOTO, THE MUNCHKINS, GLINDA THE GOOD WITCH, THE
TINMAN, THE COWARDLY LION, THE GREEN GUARD, THE WIZARD, THE EMERALD CITY TRADERS, THE FLYING MONKEYS, THE WINKIES, AUNT EM, UNCLE HENRY, AND THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD.
Auditions are open to anyone in grades 1st through 5th. The audition process lasts up to two hours and all those auditioning are required to be in attendance for its entirety. The cast will be announced at the end of the two hour audition;
each cast member will receive a rehearsal schedule for the remainder of the week. A portion of the cast will be required to stay following auditions for a short rehearsal.
Two professional actor/directors from the staff of Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre will direct the production and play the
roles of THE SCARECROW and THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST.
Rehearsals will be held from 2:45pm to 7pm throughout the remainder of the week, with performances scheduled for
Saturday, September 19 at 9am and 11:30am at Liberty Middle School in West Fargo.
This week long Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre residency is being sponsored by Horace Elementary
PTO.
Tickets for the performances are $5 for Adults and $3 for children ages 4 years and up. Tickets will
be available at the door.

The age of the child is not the only factor that should be considered when children are left alone. Other factors include the
maturity of the child, emotional health factors, the child’s physical or cognitive limitations, length of time left alone, time of day
or night, other children present or to be supervised, location
and environmental conditions, frequency of being left alone
and the accessibility of a parent or other responsible adult.
For children 0-17 (specific minimum ages outlined):
 Children eight (8) years of age or under should be supervised at all times with a caregiver available. An eight year old
should not be left in charge of children;
 Children who are nine (9) years old should not be left
unsupervised for periods greater than two (2) hours during the
daytime. This age child should not be unsupervised at night

and should not supervise other children;
Children who are 10 and 11 years old may be left alone for longer periods of time. However, caution is advised in leaving a child unsupervised during sleeping hours. Children in this age should not be responsible for younger children;
 Children who are the age of twelve (12) years and older may be permitted to act as babysitters. It is recommended that they successfully complete an approved childcare training course. Caution should be advised on number of children left in care, length of time for
care giving responsibility, factors regarding special needs of children left in care and resources available to child providing care;
Children under 15 years of age should not be left unattended overnight;

 Caution should be taken in leaving 15-17 year olds alone overnight. Extended absences of caregivers are not recommended; and
 Caregivers should adhere to supervision requirements of public facilities, (i.e. Video Arcades, Drop-In Centers, Pools, Restaurants,
etc.).
All children left home alone must be able to demonstrate:
 Knowledge of where their parents or other responsible adults are, how to reach them, and length of time of absence; and Knowledge of
emergency procedures and arrangements for emergency situations
