Electric Avenue - McDonald’s
For the past few months Electric Avenue
has been alive with the sounds and sights of a
major construction project. Long time franchise holder, Tim Barrett, opted to raze the 40
year old McDonalds building in favor of the latest technologically up to the moment
design. Features include digital menu boards, a bright color pallet, three televisions,
double refreshment towers and lots of power outlets for computer use.
Situated on the same lot, greatly expanded with many truck-loads of fill, and a
total redesign, the store will complement Barrett’s second Lewistown location at the Wal
-Mart entrance, which features a Playland, making it more appealing to
consumers with younger children. The new Electric Avenue location will
prove to be more adult and older teens friendly.
The 1.5 million dollar reconstruction is sophisticated and much more
functional. The new double drive through will expedite the customer flow as
70% of the business is provided by this means. Many special offers and door prizes will
make the grand opening an exciting major event.
McDonald’s began as a barbeque restaurant in 1940, owned & operated by
Richard & Maurice McDonald. In 1948 they reorganized their concept and thus began the production line style hamburger stand.
Ray Kroc came on board in 1955 as their marketing director and subsequently purchased the company and led its growth both
domestically and worldwide.
In 2011, McDonalds served 68 million customers daily, operated 34,000 restaurants over 119 countries while employing
400,000 people and registering 27 billion dollars of business in the U.S. alone.

Twenty four
years ago Scott Knouse was a “man in brown” delivering packages for UPS, a job he had been performing for
over sixteen years. His young son, Scott Jr., was fascinated

by computers and Scott Sr. realized how limited the local technology

tech companies. He saw the potential for a local supplier to fill the void.

With the help of his son and his brother Richard, who had taken some computer courses in college,

Scott opened Knouse Computer on East Market Street in downtown Lewistown, this was in 1989. Shortly thereafter, with the closing of Lewistown Specialty Yarns, Mike Fisher joined the staff and started taking computer Open: Monday - Friday
classes. The business grew continually for over a

decade. In 2002 ACS World bought Scott’s business and hired him and four of his employees to work out of the ACS location in the
former Buffington Office Supply/J Office Supply building on the corner of Third and
Wayne, the current Mifflin County Annex Building. ACS had become a fast growing
consortium of business services all housed under one roof and seemed a perfect fit
moving forward into the fast changing future of technology.
The business and the relationship lasted two years at which time Scott
Knouse and Mike Fisher decided to form a new corporation, Knouse-Fisher Technologies. For a short term they worked out of a downtown warehouse and in October of 2004 they opened a store front location in Burnham at 230

2012 AGENT OF THE YEAR - Stone Arch Real Estate Proudly Announces
Top Sales Agent
Congratulations to Bev Naylor of Stone Arch Real Estate for achieving the 2012 Top Sales Agent of the Year award for her outstanding sales production. Bev
brings over 18 years of experience to her real estate career. She resides in Lewistown with her
husband Pat and nephew Blade Kelly. Bev can be reached at 717-250-4530, or by emailing her
at: [email protected].
In second place for total sales production is Tami Slick. To achieve this award after only being in the real estate business since 2011
is an amazing accomplishment. Tami lives in Lewistown with her husband Curt and three children, Cassidy, a senior at Penn State University,
Mason, a student at Triangle Tech and Ella, a 7th grader at Mifflin County Middle School.
Stone Arch Real Estate is a specialty office committed to a higher standard of customer service, built on listening and trust, and we
apply a team approach to make sure every detail is taken care of throughout the transaction. Our vision is to make our clients #1, not to be
the office with the most units sold. It's simple; by serving a smaller market, we excel in service and results. Our combined knowledge and
specialized expertise in Mifflin County's most distinctive properties make us the real estate company to turn to for real estate with the personal touch.

One of the highlights of the year is always our annual Holiday
Gathering. 2012 certainly was no exception. A shared “After Hours” at
two brand new businesses adjacent to the Best Western Hotel at the
Milroy exit of 322 West took place on
December 13th.
It’s a home run when you
mix great food, live music, outstanding hospitality and networking opportunities. Think bruschetta, hummus
& pita wedges, shrimp cocktail, marinated beef tips, veggie platter and meat & cheese platters, live music by Doug Snook; all at Smitty’s Sports Bar & Grill.
Next door at the Dutch Pantry, a co-op of gift, clothing & food vendors, huge subs
were carved plus samplings of many delectable treats from the shelves of the pantry. Door
prizes and discount coupons were an added bonus to a festive night enjoyed by well over
100 members and guests.
Many thanks to our hosts; Ajit & Will Smith from Smitty’s and Scott Keys of the Dutch Pantry. We highly recommend
you visit both businesses in the near future, you won’t be disappointed.

I have never been on a cruise, never been to Florida or to Alaska.
Haven’t walked on any continent other than North America, as a matter of
fact, I have never been to any foreign land besides Canada. I did fly to
California to take training on an inventory control system in 1990 and I flew to Las Vegas to
get married in 2003. I have flown to New Orleans; Charleston, South Carolina; Portland, Maine; and to Halifax,
Nova Scotia; and Montreal. Any other travel was by automobile, train or bus, which included Washington, D.C., Boston/Cape
Cod; NYC; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Block Island, R.I.; Cape May, New Jersey; and Virginia Beach. In simple terms, I am not
very well traveled outside the borders of the state of Pennsylvania.
The Commonwealth has always presented enough opportunities to keep me enthused. Most of my destinations have
become hot spots for a multitude of repeat visits. For example, my first visit to Bucks County took place many decades ago and
prompted a romance that has endured well over one hundred re-visits. A similar history includes Wellsboro/PA Grand Canyon,
Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Jim Thorpe, Kinzua Dam, Longwood Gardens, Route 6 road trip, Bedford, and Lititz/Lancaster. I’d
designate these destinations as long trips, as opposed to close-by day trips I enjoy such as Lewisburg/Mifflinburg, Huntingdon/
Raystown, Selinsgrove, State College/Boalsburg, Bellefonte, Millheim, Millersburg Ferry/ Lake Tobias, Knoebels Grove,
Hershey Park, Ricketts Glen, Adams County/Gettysburg, Orbisonia/trolleys & trains and Harrisburg/Camp Hill.
Needless to say, our very own Juniata River Valley with the mantra “Discover Our Good Nature” may provide many days
of exploration all within minutes of home. I still enjoy a Saturday afternoon in the Big Valley, a Sunday drive across Juniata
County on Route 35, a picnic at Reeds Gap State Park, a winery tour, a kayak sojourn on the Juniata or a hike from the Arch
Rock Canal House to the fishing access area along the narrows. How about a Saturday evening at the races in Port Royal or a
Sunday afternoon at the McCoy House or the Juniata County Historical Society Museum at Academia and lunch on the
Pomeroy-Academia covered bridge? An interesting drive is from Thompsontown to Mt. Union on Routes 333 and 103, on the
south side of the Juniata River.
Pennsylvania has so much for all of us to choose from; be it scenic vistas, recreation, state parks, wine tours,
underground caverns, entertainment, culinary tours, shopping , antiquing, museum tours, historical tours, fairs & festivals,
education, fishing, hiking & hunting, sporting events/stadiums, golf courses, ski resorts and a plethora of other interesting &
educational opportunities.

2013! We’ll look forward to seeing you on the highways and byways right here at home in the Juniata River Valley and
throughout the “State of Independence” in 2013.
