Dear Parents and Guardians,
April starts with the typical, April Fool’s jokes. April also brought eighth grade
parents and students to Cañon City High School to start the transition from
middle school to high school. We would like to thank all parents and students
for coming. We look forward to seeing you next year.
There will be a reduction to our staff next fall due to a decline in the projections
of student enrollment. There will be approximately 20 less freshman next year.
There are normally over 300 and the projection is about 280. This year total student enrollment was just over 1150. Next year the total student projection is
1108. The financial burden that has fallen on the nation also has affects in our
district. The district will be eliminating 6 teaching positions; three from the high
school. We will do our best to keep programs, which will require some shuffling of teaching assignments. We will also do our best to keep class sizes
down. This has been a trying time. We will work together for what is best for
our students to provide them the best education Cañon City has to offer. We
have great teachers and top-notch programs that will prepare our students for
the 21st Century.
April brought the play production “Cinderella” to the stage. It was a must see
event! Competitive Speech continues to bring accolades to the school. Track,
baseball, girl’s soccer and tennis continue through their season schedules.
ROTC had a drill competition on April 11th which brought schools from around
the state to compete.
April 25th is the Junior-Senior Prom with the theme of “Above the City Lights” at
Harrison School. Following prom, CCHS parents will continue the prom theme
and host Cañon City High School’s first Post-Prom Party, “A Night in New
York”, from 12:30-5:00 a.m. for all Junior and Senior students. This activity is
sponsored by the School Improvement Committee. Post-Prom events will feature Wall Street (casino area) and Apollo Theatre (movies). Students may also
participate in activities as they visit Central Park, Ellis Island, Rockefeller Center, and Coney Island. I would like to thank those parents who have volunteered
and parents of the School Improvement Committee who have taken on this
challenge.
