The 2015-16 school year with students in the building has officially concluded. Congratulations to the graduating class of
2016! We wish you the best as you turn the page to the next
chapter in your life.
Reflection is a crucial part of learning and improving. We
continually examine ways to enhance our existing structure
and programs while maximizing fiscal responsibility. The FY
2015 efficiency data from the Department of Education was
released earlier this year and the Chester Area School District was ranked 2nd
amongst all South Dakota school districts. One of our school board goals is to
strive for increased student achievement while maximizing the dollars we
have. A great example of our district providing a high quality education is the
data from the School Performance Index – we are right near the top of our conference and all area schools when combing the SPI scores from our elementary, middle, and high school. That data, coupled with our efficiency report, is
something to be proud of! In addition, we have had a historic year with our
extra-curricular activities. This success is an extension of the classroom and
the Flyer faithful have much to be excited about! We are blessed to have talented students, educators, and community working together to make our
school great!
Building and Grounds Projects:
 Throughout the summer break, our custodial staff will be working on the
typical projects associated with this time of year. In addition, the following capital projects will be completed: 1) New steel on the bus barn,
2) Parking Lot improvements, and 3) New carpet at Cyber School. A
committee is also progressing toward a digital board and marquee to replace the existing sign in front of the school.
I look forward to seeing all the smiling faces when we resume school in August. School will start for students on August 18. Enjoy a safe and fun-filled
summer!
Mr. Larson
Greetings from the middle and high school!
Another fantastic school year has wrapped up. The year was filled with success in and out of the classroom. Our 6th, 7th, 8th, and 11th graders took the
Smarter Balance Testing in April over math, English, and science. The staff
and Mrs. Hansen did a great job prepping our students to take these difficult
tests. Parents/guardians will be sent results later this summer.
On April 26th, Ms. Mogen held the 5th-8th grade instrumental solo and ensemble contests at Chester. Students were able to display their hard work of the
year with contests. The judges were impressed with the talents and musical abilities of our young
students.
Ms. Mogen’s work with her students has made the band program thrive at Chester Area. The band
showed off its’ talent by performing down in Branson, Missouri over May 31st-June 4th. I even received an email from a former principal from Illinois who saw our students perform as well as interact with others. This gentlemen and his wife were so impressed with our students’ performance
and behavior. Once again, our students and staff showed everyone what a class act they are! Great
job students!!
The middle school track and golf teams endured the weather and were able to see some great results. Ms. Benson, Mr. O’Connell, and Mrs. McDonald were pleased with the gains the students
made. Great job middle schoolers.
Mrs. Larson, assistant coaches, and the high school track team hosted the second annual Little Flyer
Track Meet in April. Surrounding area schools sent students ages from 3 years old to 5th grade to
this successful meet. Fun was had by all involved.
The Chester Area Flyers track team ended the season with a bang! The boy’s team finished 2nd to
Bison, (just five points behind them) and the girls’ finished in 3rd (one point behind runner-up
Deubrook Area). The Chester Flyers won the Combined Team Title, for the first time ever. The
following were the results of the state track meet in Sioux Falls for the boys’: Austin Eppard – won
the disc with a throw of 159’07”. Austin also won the gold medal, which is awarded to the top performance in all classes. Austin also placed 5th in the shot put with a personal best of 46’05”. The 4
x 100 m relay team consisting of Riley Greenhoff, Haden Ewoldt, Mikeal Tammen, and Cade Larson won the event in a time of 44.94. This same team broke the school record on Friday running a
time of 44.56. The 4 x 200 m relay team consisting of Mikeal Tammen, Riley Greenhoff, Haden
Ewoldt, and Cade Larson placed 2nd with a time of 1:32.71, just .05 seconds off of the winning
team. Riley Greenhoff placed 2nd in the 100m dash, with a time of 11.33. Cade Larson placed 4th in
the 100m dash, with a time of 11.38. Haden Ewoldt finished 7th place in the high jump with a jump
of 6’1”. Other boy’s state team members included Devin Eppard, Levi DeVries and Aden Baumberger.
Girls’ Results: Josie Wolf won the 100m dash with a time of 12.63 and the 200 m dash with a time
of 25.86. The 4 x 200 m relay team consisting of Makenna Larson, Karissa Campbell, Jenna Reiff,
and Josie Wolf won the event in a school record time of 1:46.15. The 4 x 100 m relay team consisting of Makenna Larson, Amanda Tieszen, Karissa Campbell, and Josie Wolf won the event in a
school record time of 50.33. Makenna Larson placed 4th in the 200 m dash in a time of 26.51 and 6th
in the 100 m dash in a time of 12.98. The Medley Relay team consisting of Amanda Tieszen,
Karissa Campbell, Hanna Reiff and Molly Heyn finished 7th in a time of 4:32.35. Other team members included Sarah Benson, Dakota Alfson, Marissa Hanley and Aleesha Alverson.

Congratulations Coach Larson, Bonte, O’Connell, Strom, Philips and athletes!
The high school golf team had a full squad for both the boys’ and girls’ teams this season. Mr. Peterson and crew improved throughout the year. Regions were held at Madison on May 31st. Chester
had Zach Brown and Cole Pry advance to State golf meet in Rapid City on June 6th and 7th. Congratulations boys!
On June 3rd, Jenna Reiff and Josie Wolf were both invited to the Argus Leader South Dakota Sports
Award. This event paid tribute to the finest high school athletes, teams, coaches and sports performances of this past year. This year’s guest speaker was Payton Manning. Josie was nominated for
track and field while Jenna was for volleyball. Jenna was selected as South Dakota’s volleyball
player of the year. Quite an accomplishment for two young ladies from a small school!!!
On May 18th, we held our first scholarship recognition ceremony for our seniors. It was during this
ceremony, we recognized our seniors’ academic accomplishments. This year’s senior class had six
valedictorians (Josh Anderson, Kacey Anderson, Kelsey Geraets, Molly Heyn, Jenna Reiff, and Marissa Philips) which reconfirms what great students the class of 2016 was. We are excited to see
what the future has in store for this class.
Graduation was held on Saturday, May 21st for 26 students. With this, it signifies another school
year coming to an end. Hats off to the staff, students, and community members for making the 2015
-2016 school year a huge success. Thank you for all you do. Hope you all enjoy your summer and
come back ready on August 18th to have another great year!
Kids First,
Julie Eppard
WOW! That was an amazingly quick school year. It seems like just yesterday
we were at open house and starting off the year. I guess time flies when you
are having fun and working really hard in the classrooms.
I need to take a moment to thank people that make a huge difference in our
school and in the lives of our students. I would like to give a huge thank you
to our teachers. I truly believe that we have the best teachers in the world.
They go above and beyond their duties to reach each student and to make a
difference in their lives. Thank you to the support staff: paraprofessionals,
secretaries, cooks, bus drivers, and janitors. These people make a difference
in the lives of our students, whether they know it or not. We are thankful for them. Thank you to
the parents, grandparents, and guardians of our students, all the work that is done at school would
be lost if we didn’t have your help. We see huge strides and gains from our students because of all
your help. Thank you to all of our volunteers, they do a great deal for our school as well. Lastly, I
would like to thank our students; we have great kids here at Chester, because they come to school
every day, prepared and ready to learn.
We had a couple special events and contributions that took place toward the end of the season.
Dayne Wyszynski a fourth grader here at Chester won the Sioux Valley billboard contest. Dayne
was awarded a letter of certification, and his picture is now on a few billboards around the area (one
is located at I-29 & 60th St. North, Sioux Falls). The second project that took place in Chester was
that our local Girls Scouts provided the elementary playground with a Buddy Bench. If a students is
feeling left out, they can have a seat on the buddy bench and others can see that they are in need of
someone to play with. The bench was built by Bob Martin from Bob’s Benches. This is a very positive addition to our playground. A huge thank you to the Girl Scouts for working hard to make this
happen.
All the classes had a lot of fun at the end of the school year on a number of different field trips. Our
preschool students spent a day at the Children’s’ Museum in Brookings. The Kindergarten and 1st
graders spent time at the Washington Pavilion. Second and third graders went to Pipestone to enjoy
and learn about the quarries. The fourth graders spent the day at the Water Festival. I had the pleasure of spending the day with the fifth graders at Gracevale Hutterite Colony. They learned about
their ancestry, culture, and way of life.
Thank you again for a great and wonderful school year. I hope everyone has a fantastic summer.
My hope is that you will use the time to reenergize and connect with family. We will see you August 15th for our elementary open house from 5:30-6:30.

By Mr. Mike O’Connell
The Empower Graduation was a complete success. Officer Gant and Rowe explained to the students how important it is to say no to drugs and alcohol. Matthew Wollman was the guest speaker and he told the kids about how important it is to pick the right friends in school. Stay away from the trouble makers and make the right decisions. Rocko, the canine, gave a demon‐
stration on how it finds drugs for the kids. Very impressive program! Isaac is releasing the 12 rainbows into the Out‐
door c a m p u s pond. Trout in the Classroom is a great program and we will do this every year and im‐
plement new learning activities that come with the curriculum.
This is a picture of my Earth Science students releasing the rainbow trout that we raised in our classroom this year. The temperature of the Out‐
door Pond was 58 degrees. We had to slowly raise our temperature of or fish from 48 degrees to with 5 de‐
grees of the pond, otherwise the fish would shock and die. We released 12 rainbow trout this year. Cody Neumann and Isaac Heidelberger are seen here testing the temperature of the pond water. My Earth Science classes used streambeds to make new, mature, and old type of rivers. Students planted crops to prevent erosion. The impor‐
tance of topsoil and agriculture in our state is very important.
Life Science this year is usually full of dissecting eyeballs, frogs, worms, and perch. I want to thank Jodie Larson, Eyecare Center, for coming in to our class again. Dr. Larsen talked about the importance of eye care and followed through the cow eye dissection. Students were engaged and we thank you for taking time out of your schedule to come into our classroom. Famous Scientists presentations were a hit
in the middle school. Each student was to
pick a famous scientist to research and
present to their audience. The students
dressed up as this scientist, which made
this experience quite unique. Makenna
Larsen, Chase McDonald, and Mackenzie
Fods.
I want to thank all of the middle school students t h a t brought in items to be sent to Trey Sal‐
men. He is currently deployed in Ku‐
waitt. I appreciate to those students that participated. Thanks!
Mrs. Larson - High School Math
As the 2015- 2016 school year comes to a close, the mathematics classes at
Chester Area High School continue to challenge themselves with a variety of topics. The
Algebra I students study polynomials, the Geometry students probability, the Algebra II
students rational expressions, and the Advanced Math Concepts students trigonometric
functions. It has been a great year academically and I appreciate all of the students’ efforts in my classes.
Mr. Eric Ruppelt, a DSU student teacher, joined our classes in February. He
brought a unique perspective to the mathematics classes and was a great addition. In Mr.
Ruppelt’s own words, “I’m really thankful to have student taught in Chester. Much has
been learned at my time at Chester High School. Chester is an excellent school, and I’m
glad to be able to have been part of it.” We wish Mr. Ruppelt well as he begins his
teaching career in West Sioux, Iowa.
Wishing everyone a wonderful summer break!
Board work is an important part of all mathematics classes. Students explain their reasoning and communicate with
their classmates about their thinking process.
Up to the
Challenge
Mrs. Moyer’s 11th Grade English Class
Imagine being given a bag of random Legos and having to create a masterpiece out of what you are given. Could you do it? The junior class in English
had to not only do that but much, much more. Technical writing is a lesson
that doesn’t get much consideration because frankly, it’s boring. However,
anytime people in the business world have to file a report, produce an action
plan, create a manual, or list instructions, they are using technical writing.
In pairs, the juniors were given a bag of Legos. They had to create a
product out of the Legos they were given—I let them add more pieces to the
bag, but they could not take any away. Once the creation was complete, the
students had to write instructions so a different group could try to re-build
the same piece. Sometimes the testers had an easy time with the re-build,
sometimes not.
Once the instructions and the testing
were complete, the students needed to sell it.
In order to do that, they had to write and
deliver a 30-second commercial in either
video, live, or audio format. This might have
been my favorite part of the challenge.
Some of the commercials were entertaining.
After a long week of state testing, the Lego
challenge was certainly a nice way to get
active, get thinking, and get creative again.

In 6th grade Computers we have been working on PowerPoint Presentations and Photo Story’s. We have also been working on Photo Story’s in 8th
grade computers. A photo story is Microsoft’s solution to digital storytelling.
You can create a basic multimedia movie without having to learn video editing.
They were allowed to make any type of photo story that they wanted and add
music to go along with their photos. You use the basics of any video by using
images, titles, music, and narration.
In freshman boys health we did a curriculum on The Truth About
Drugs. This curriculum comes from The Foundation for a Drug-Free World
which is a nonprofit public benefit corporation that empowers youth and adults
with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and
live drug-free.
In the sophomore boys gym class they became very passionate about
floor hockey when the weather didn’t permit us to get outside. Lately we have
been able to go outside and we have been working on football, basketball, and
soccer. This is a very competitive group of boys and they have been very fun to
work with!

In Geography the freshman girls are learning about the different parts of the world through
maps as well as human geography by learning important cultural and physical features in each
region. Some of the cultural aspects we focus on in each region are language, religion, and local traditions.
Cartography is also an important part of the class as students must map out each region on a large blank piece
of poster and draw each country to scale.
For US history we started back in August talking about the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the settling of the
West and we have now just finished up talking about the Vietnam War and 1970s politics. An interesting project we did this semester was researching JFK assassination theories. In addition, as a class we researched the
Vietnam War movie genre and its impact on the public’s perception of the event.
In World History this semester we started with the Ancient Greeks and Romans and ended with the industrialization of the late 1800s. In between that time we have covered a wide variety of topics throughout the western
world such as religion, war, and discovery. This created great class discussions and critical thinking questions
for the class.
For government class the seniors have been doing their in class congress project with the 10th Senior Congressional Congress. The class must go through the same procedures our government has to go through today in
order to pass laws for the classroom. The class is split into the House and Senate and each chamber has assigned their leaders such as the Speaker of the House, Senate Pro Tempore, whips, and conference committee
members. I serve as the president and Mr. Knight serves as the Supreme Court Justice. An example of a bill
that this class congress has passed is Law 10.SB.8 entitled the “No Homework”. The law stated that on days
when there was a golf meet and track meet there would be no homework assigned. Surprisingly enough that
bill passed unanimously in both chambers before it came to my desk.
Congratulations to the Senior choir members from the Chester Choir. These seniors have
all been 4 yr choir members. These singers have
posted a superior rating at the Region 2 Large
group Vocal contest for the last four years – and
have also accumulated over 18 superior ratings
on solos/ensembles at the Region 2 Solo/
Ensemble contest at Augustana University.
Thank you for your leadership and talents – we
will miss you. Best of luck as you graduate
and may you always keep singing!!!
Ms. Benson
I am saddened that this is the last opportunity I will have to write to you about the young people here in
Chester, but very excited to tell you that we have ended on a very high note. I want to thank the community
and the students here at Chester Area School for a wonderful two years. The students in this school are very
special, and we should all be proud of them.
This year we had Kelsey Geraets who placed 6th in the Vet Science competition at the State FFA Convention
in Brookings. Kelsey received a $1,500 dollar scholarship from Monsanto as she pursues a degree in agriculture. We had four seniors who earned their State FFA Degrees. This is the highest degree that the State can
give. These four young people were Zach Kilber, Mikeal Tammen, McClay Fischer, and Chane Lewis.
Mikeal Tammen was awarded the first ever Roger Seeley $1,000 Scholarship to the school of his choice.
The year came to a close at our FFA Banquet on May 5th. The banquet was filled with awards, recap of the
year, as well as announced the new set of officers for the following year. Overall, I am very proud of the
young people here in Chester and will very dearly miss them as my wife and I move forward to the next
chapter in our lives. Good luck to these young people and am excited to see just how far they can go.
Thank you,
Brady Duxbury

9th English Students Finish Their Research Papers
9th English: Students finished working on their research papers in April. Their research papers
were a culmination of the English skills that they have worked on during the school year. The research
topics were chosen from a list of 80+ topics. Students had to write an informative paper covering
the topic that they chose. They worked very hard on researching different sources, highlighting their
sources, work on a thesis statement, work on outlines, bibliographies, citing their work within their
document and they also had to poll their fellow classmates with a question that they documented
into their papers in the form of a chart or graph. Students research topics ranged from leukemia to
the Chernobyl disaster to autism and Lou Gehrig’s Disease/ALS and other interesting topics. These
papers were very impressive! Ask your child to share his/her paper with you!
