gratitude I congratulate the Affiliates on
their 90th Anniversary. Since its founding
in 1923, the Affiliates have devoted their
time and talent to their mission of supporting their beloved Los Angeles Philharmonic and the music education of the children of Los
Angeles.
With your passion, dedication and hard work, we have evolved from
a handful of volunteers into an organization consisting of over 900
members who continue to raise the bar on contributions of significant volunteer hours as well as monetary gifts.
I salute you on all of your wonderful achievements, and encourage
each of you to continue your passion in order to further the mission
of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Having passion about our organization’s purpose is an exceptional edge.
We will commemorate this very significant milestone during our upcoming Spring Celebration on May 29. We have much to be proud
of!

THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC WOMEN'S COMMITTEE (HONORARY) - 90TH YEAR
The Women's Committee, now in its 90th year, received its
“Honorary” status in 2008 and was no longer required to
solicit new members. Members continue to support the
Philharmonic with donations and volunteering to the best of

The Los Angeles Philharmonic was founded in 1919 and
was resident at Philharmonic Hall on 5th Street and Olive
Avenue until the time the Dorothy Chandler opened on
December 6, 1964.
The Women's Committee was organized by a group
of women interested in music and the arts in March
of 1923. It has functioned as a support group for the
Phil ever since. Members of the committee fondly remember the work that needed to be done in support of
raising funds for the new home of the orchestra under
the strong leadership of Dorothy Buffum Chandler. They
would meet with their brown bag lunches and follow the
instructions of Mrs. Chandler. They tell me they worked
hard, even after the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion was
opened – often meeting in the Founders Circle for their
activities. Mrs. Chandler continued to be their leader.
Charla Bisno Janecek told us how she got involved with
the Women's Committee. When she was old enough to
drive she chauffeured her mother to meetings. As new
activities were started, the Women's Committee members took on leadership roles to start these “special interest” committees. Today there are 16 Committees under the direction of the Affiliates organization spread out
all over LA County busy doing fundraisers, outreach to
schools and attending concerts all in support of the orchestra. Each group has found ways to be successful in
raising funds for the orchestra, reaching out to young
musicians and exposing children to music.

On December 1st, we joined the Salem Lutheran Church
Women for their Annual Christmas Tea and participated in
carol singing. Of course the fun is the “high tea atmosphere,” wearing hats and gloves and using a fancy tea cup,
very special indeed. Another Salon is planned for April.

GOLD BOOK ONLINE AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
Los Angeles Philharmonic Affiliates Wins Gold Book Online Award of Excellence from
The Volunteer Council of the League of American Orchestras for
Outstanding Volunteer Project, “LA Phil Affiliates Fundraising Workshop”
The Volunteer Council of the League of American Orchestras is pleased to announce that the Los Angeles
Philharmonic Affiliates has won an Award of Excellence in the annual Gold Book Online competition. Their
project, entitled “LA Phil Affiliates Fundraising Workshop,” benefited the Affiliate Volunteers by developing a
mentor relationship with the LA Phil Association Development Department. The award will be presented at
the League’s 68th National Conference this June in St. Louis, MO.
The annual Gold Book Online competition recognizes outstanding projects created and executed by volunteer
associations of symphony orchestras throughout the United States and in Canada. Projects are judged by the
League’s Volunteer Council each fall. All of the submitted projects will be featured online at
www.goldbookonline.org.
The League’s Volunteer Council is an organization comprising recognized community leaders throughout the
United States and Canada who have demonstrated outstanding support for their symphony orchestras. The
Council’s awards honor volunteers who, through their hard work and dedication, help to insure the success of
their organizations.
League of American Orchestras
The League of American Orchestras leads, supports, and champions America’s orchestras and the vitality of
the music they perform. Its diverse membership of nearly 800 orchestras across North America runs the gamut from world-renowned symphonies to community groups, from summer festivals to student and youth ensembles. LA PHILHARMONIC AFFILIATES DVD SHOOT
On Thursday, January 31, 2013, LA Philharmonic
Affiliates met in the Green Room of WDCH to help
prepare a DVD marketing tool designed to tell
about the Affiliates – our rich history, vibrant present, and bright future. This was our chance to
present who we are and what we do for the Phil
and for the community. Various committee members arrived throughout the day to go before the
video camera and talk about their respective roles
in promoting the LA Phil and its endeavors.

minutes in front of the camera in order to keep the
best few minutes for the final takes.

SPEAKERS BUREAU
About two thousand students participate yearly in our
Hollywood Bowl tours. Not only do they enjoy the
hands-on museum on Peppertree Lane and Music
Mobile™, but they also “walk” the history of the Bowl,
tour dressing rooms and backstage areas, and even
perform songs on stage.

Recently, member Robert Scales, Professor Emeritus
of the USC School of Dramatic Arts, presented a fascinating description of his work as a technical consultant in the planning of Walt Disney Concert Hall, giving
us the “inside scoop” on critical decisions.
One of his duties was to consult with theater designers worldwide about ideal acoustics, sight lines, and
backstage facilities. We also learned how fortunate
we are that our Philharmonic musicians and management insisted that the acoustic qualities equal or surpass those of favorite concert halls in which they had
performed, such as Suntory Hall in Japan.

MUSIC MOBILE™
The Music Mobile™ program is currently presenting in
Glendale schools via the Glendale Committee. The
Peninsula Committee will follow with the program during February and March and invites all docents to attend their orientation at Amuse on February 11 from
9:00 am to 10:30 am. Those interested should contact
Shirley Farley at [email protected]. This year each
school will receive a "Peter and the Wolf" CD to prepare students in advance of the Music Mobile™
presentation and they will keep this in their school file
for future years. The Music Mobile™ training DVD
was created by Lynn Gref and given to each commit-
tee participating in the Music Mobile™ program. Committees interested in viewing the DVD should contact
Shirley Farley or Margo Penney. We thank Lynn for
all his time and effort and also Charlotte Brackmann
for her presentation to the students. It was especially
challenging since they had to relocate the equipment
and children to the Hollywood Bowl Cottage from the
Hollywood Bowl lounge the morning of the event. We
will be using the Bowl Cottage during April for our Music Mobile™ classes since the Bowl lounge is unavailable until next fall. We thank all the docents and students for their patience during this time.

On February 16th, a benefit with recital, luncheon and
auction was held at Old Ranch Country Club. Los Angeles Philharmonic musician Barry Socher, violin, was
the featured artist. Proceeds from this event will benefit
the Los Angeles Philharmonic Education Programs for
Children and Youth.
Upcoming programs include the Spring Musicale on
March 13th at Lakewood Country Club, Lakewood, featuring The Company Three Trio and Los Angeles Philharmonic musician Robert Gupta, violin, performing at
the May 7th installation luncheon at Virginia Country
Club, Long Beach.

WESTSIDE COMMITTEE
The Westside Committee Benefit, Simply…the
“Best,” will be held on April 7, at the Riviera Country Club. Guests will enjoy a delicious dinner, silent
auction and entertainment by flutist Slapy Kerkonian and pianist / classical guitarist, Yalil Guerra.
Plans are being finalized for other events. In the
planning stages are a tour of a local museum, tennis gathering, bridge party, and cooking demonstration and lunch at a member’s home.

Simply…the “Best” was chosen as the name of the
event as it celebrates the Los Angeles Philharmonic, recently deemed the best orchestra in the United States.
In addition to planning the event, Chair Bonnie
Hecht has been organizing “mini” fundraising
events to supplement monies raised at our major
fundraiser. One such event was a shopping trip to
Pacific Palisades’ Lavender Blue store. The owner, an LA Phil supporter, generously donated a
percentage of our sale receipts to the Benefit. After shopping, all enjoyed a delicious lunch next
door at the restaurant, Maison Giraud.

Gustavo's latest recording for its
Yellow Label, Mahler's Ninth Symphony, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, recorded live at Walt
Disney Concert Hall as part of Gustavo's landmark Mahler Project.
“I waited a long time to conduct this
symphony,” says Gustavo. “It embodies all the deep, personal dualities at the heart of Mahler’s music:

and despair. It is a very special

LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC COMMITTEE
On December 8, 2012 the Los Angeles Philharmonic
Committee came together for the annual Holiday Party
at the historic California Club. The evening included an
exceptional performance by the Harvard Westlake
Chamber Singers, under the direction or Rodger Guerrero. Their program encompassed several centuries of
renowned choral music. In addition to the ensemble
group works, the Bel Canto women’s choir and the Wolverines delighted the audience with their selections. It
was an evening where members celebrated their fundraising work for music education and the endowment
that took place during the November Letter Writing
Campaign, when letters were mailed to friends and
family requesting donations to support the LA Phil’s
many youth music education and awareness programs.

Looking ahead to May 4, 2013, the Committee will return to the 1940’s as we step back in time to “The
Swinging Years” and revel in a world of swing dance
and the energy of the Big Band Era. The Los Angeles
Art Deco landmark, Cicada Restaurant, well-known for
its Lalique glass and operator-run elevators, will be
filled with music and dancers. All Affiliates are invited to
join in the fun and support our spring fundraiser knowing that the proceeds directly benefit music education
and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. There are always
intriguing travel opportunities, vacation homes and restaurant packages, among other items available at our
silent auction.

In February, our Associate members, led by Ginger
Ludwick, have planned an outing to the Palm Desert
Designer Showcase. This is a premiere for the
Coachella Valley Designers, who offer a tour of four
homes that have been transformed by decorators and
design professionals. Lunch will follow at the Marrakesh Country Club. This event has been planned by our
Associates who have invited all Active and Provisional
members. Many of our Associates were former mem-

Peninsula Committee
The Peninsula Committee will proudly present its annual Grand Salon on Sunday, May 19th.
This all takes place in a beautiful oceanfront home, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm, and features Nathan Cole,
First Associate Concertmaster of the LA Phil, and his wife, Akiko Tarumoto, LA Phil violinist.
Guests will also enjoy special music by young musicians from Peninsula Schools, as well as gourmet tastings by notable South Bay chefs.
Proceeds from the Salon and its silent auction will benefit the Los Angeles Philharmonic and youth music education events in South Bay schools.

All Affiliate members are welcome to serve at the center if they can spare some regular time helping after school help.

One of the Affiliates, Brigid Najera, from Affiliates at Large knows from personal experience how rewarding this can be.
When asked the following questions this is what she said.
Q: How long have you been volunteering at HOLA?
A: Almost 3 years.
Q: How often do you go to the school to volunteer?
A: Before every concert, rehearsals and sometimes once a week to tutor their academic school work.
Q: What do you do when you are at HOLA?
A: Whatever is needed to help get ready for concerts or to help the staff.
Q: Why do you like volunteering?
A: Volunteering at HOLA is very positive and inspiring. I help bring classical music into the life of children and families
who might never have a chance. When the children “make music,” my volunteering gives tribute to the discipline, sacrifice, love and devotion of the staff and children.
Q:What would you advise anyone who is thinking about going there to volunteer?
A: Come be part of this wonderful transforming process. El Sistema does change lives and communities.
Q: Would you please tell of an experience during your volunteering?
A: ”There are many. You have to be part of the HOLA music world. All the students want me to clap for them when they
play.

INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE
Faithful to its traditions, this year’s International Committee Christmas Board meeting and luncheon was
generously hosted by President Kay Sidhu and held
at Le Petit Chateau, a lovely French restaurant situated in the heart of North Hollywood for over 30
years. The restaurant provided a delightful culinary
experience with exquisite decor.
Members enthusiastically engaged in various volunteer activities of the Philharmonic including Toyota
Symphonies for Youth tickets, Symphonies for
Schools, Braille Institute, Opening Gala for Affiliates,
workshops, etc.
The International Committee’s membership is growing and the committee is again delighted this year to
welcome new provisional members eager to support
the Philharmonic.
In preparation for the Ball Benefit 2012, the Committee traversed the timeless beauty of the land of Italy
in “Italia: Centuries of Art and Style,” but where will
the International Committee take us in the year
2013? Veteran Ball Benefit Chair, Rabab Ashley,
waving her magic wand, remains decisively quiet and
enticing, promising us an elegant and enchanting
evening celebrating the land of waltzes and wonderful
music, the country of Austria.

SYMPHONIES FOR SCHOOLS
On February 5, 6, 7,and 8, the LA Phil presented six
sold out concerts to over 13,500 students (grades 312) and their teachers who came to WDCH from
throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Very many
thanks to all the Affiliates, who were a tremendous
help in getting the students off their buses, into the Hall,
to their seats, and back to their buses.
With over 100 Affiliate members participating in four
consecutive days, this becomes a very busy commitment for our members each year. But, the excitement,
wonder, and terrific behavior of the students certainly
makes this a worthwhile project for the Affiliates!

The week before, many of our volunteers attended
an orientation meeting and backstage tour at WDCH.
The LA Phil Education Department fully appreciates
the participation of the Affiliates in these yearly Symphonies for Schools outreach events.
At a recent talk at WDCH for special education thirdgraders, a student called out during a video with
background music, “I love this classical music!” Our
efforts are more valuable and rewarding than we often realize.

ENCORE
Encore's annual Holiday Tea was held at Bette Moen's home
in Rolling Hills on December 17, 2012.
The tea table delicacies were provided by Encore board members who acted as hosts to the membership at large. Current
and past presidents served tea and coffee. The pianist, Jolie
Hughes, played traditional music of the season which added
to the holiday festivities and the tea event provided an opportunity for members to renew friendships and welcome
new members.

On January 21 Encore held its Winter Meeting and Luncheon
at Bistro Garden in Studio City.
Concert pianist Gavin Martin was the musical guest and provided the group with a totally superb recital of demanding virtuoso lollipops and transcriptions by composers from Rachmaninoff to Bach.

Affiliates Tribute Luncheon for
Danny Rothmuller, hosted by
the B&P Committee

The B&P Committee continues its
great program of notable musicians and classical music personages. On February 7 our guest
speaker was the newest member of the viola section, Michael
Larco. It was obvious from his enthusiasm how much he enjoys, on
so many levels, being in the LA Phil!
On April 11 we welcome internationally renowned guitarist, Kenton Youngstrom, who will discuss
his career of guitar performance,
teaching, composing and arranging, ending with a demonstration of
the instrument and aspects of
learning the guitar from the point of
view of adult students.
Our fundraiser for the music library takes place on Saturday,
April 27, and features a Philharmonic String Trio with Ingrid
Hutman, viola; Gloria Lum, cello; and Akiko Tarumoto, violin.
They will play one of classical music’s summits, Bach’s Goldberg
Variations, in a special string trio
arrangement. That’s not all!
Rounding out this extraordinary
recital are a silent auction, raffle
drawing, and sit-down dinner by
Patina at $200 per person for all of
this. It takes place in the Dorothy
Chandler Pavilion, 5th Floor.

On May 9, all the Affiliate committees are invited and encouraged to attend a well-deserved
tribute to Associate Principal
Cellist Emeritus, Danny
Rothmuller, recently retired from
the LA Phil.
Over the past 42 years no one has
done more for the Affiliates than
Danny. He is as renowned for his
authentic Hungarian dinners which
have brought in thousands of dollars to the Phil as he is for his virtuosity. He has appeared before
committees countless times and
has always been there with his
quick wit, smile and proud conversation about his orchestra. We
could never miss him onstage, often appearing with bright Hungarian red socks and spinning his cello
around as the audience applauded
after a major orchestral piece.
This is a great opportunity for us all
to do something for Danny to
demonstrate our high level of appreciation. Space is limited at Kendall’s Restaurant, where the luncheon takes place. The cost is $50
per person. The invitations for the
luncheon will be distributed in
March, so be on the lookout!

The Affiliates At Large started the
Holidays off with an International
Dinner at the Volunteer Cottage. The
guest speaker was noted composer,
arranger and lecturer, Shelly Cohen.
He discussed his extensive professional career, including being the Director of Music for the
Johnny Carson Show, choral director
for a major church, producing many
albums and lecturing to community
groups on music appreciation and
music history. The evening included
the collection of canned goods for
distribution by a local food bank.
The Affiliates at Large continue to
provide tickets to Toyota Symphonies For Youth for students
in Music Education programs at Stagg Street
School in Van Nuys and
Guest speaker Shelly Cohen and his wife, Leona
Lorne Avenue School in Northridge.

COMMITTEE OF PROFESSIONAL WOMEN
In January, forty-three COPW members and guests
gathered at A Food Affair in Los Angeles. It was a
time to welcome new members, honor outgoing Board
Members, vote on the proposed slate of new
Board Members, rekindle friendships, enjoy an incredible buffet, and increase one's knowledge and appreciation of music.
The musical program featured Dr. Li Chi who performed on the erhu, a Chinese two-stringed bowed
fiddle. She explained the history of the instrument
and played a variety of music genres. Erhu is now
one of the most popular instruments in China.
COPW welcomes all Affilates to join them for
the March 26th meeting at St Bede's Episcopal
Church, 3590 Grand View Blvd., Los Angeles for an
afternoon of choral music presented by the Johnny
Mercer's Braille Institute Children's Choir. A buffet
luncheon will follow the concert.

FOOTHILL COMMITTEE
Foothill Committee’s Holiday Party is now a happy
memory and it is safe to say that it was a wonderful party.
How could it not be? Getting together a group of people
who know how to make their own good time is always a
winner. Pianist Brian Shyer provided the entertainment.
His talent, sense of humor and patience continue to be a
perfect complement to Foothill Committee’s spontaneous
and fun group.
um in the Los Angeles County Fairplex. This year’s
event will feature jazz pianist David Benoit and will be
fabulous! It features elegant jazz and vintage cars, an
outstanding combination! As always, there also will be
lots of wonderful food and the event promises to be great
fun!

our January meeting. This was a lovely concert followed
by a delightful lunch -- a great way to continue old
friendships and make new ones at the beginning of a
new year.
The Committee’s focus is now on its annual fundraiser,
scheduled for May 5th at the NHRA Motorsports Muse-
Nancy Farrow, Barb Damuth, and Hostess Peggy Rees at Foothill
Committee’s Holiday Party.

CRESCENDO
Crescendo proudly hosted the Sights and Sounds of
Kathac Dance Stories of India on Sunday, January
13th at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Affiliates came to
listen, enjoy and learn about the Kathac dance tradition.
The name Kathac is derived from the Sanskrit word Kath
meaning story and Kathac is generally translated as “she
or he who tells a story.” Kathac dance history is over
4,000 years old and even today is one of the most
watched and respected classical dance forms of India.
that followed featured intricate rhythmic footwork patterns,
sounds of ankle bells accentuating slow dance walks, story-related facial expressions and hand movements.

Affiliates and guests were all eyes and ears watching the
four dance stories performed elegantly by two beautiful
and graceful dancers from Anjani’s Kathac Dance of India. The program began with a dance invocation to the
elephant-headed deity Ganesh whose blessings are
sought at the opening of a program. The dance stories
Topping off the event was a Patina light Indian tea and
buffet. Affiliates lingered to enjoy the food and conversation and to express how much they enjoyed the program.

provide diverse musical experiences to expand our

INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT GUPTA, LA PHIL FIRST VIOLINIST (CONTINUED ON PAGE 17)
Affiliates News Editor, Gary Hollander, had the pleasure of interviewing LA Phil first violinist Robert Gupta on
January 9, 2013. We discussed some local activities
that he has spearheaded, all related to his quest to give
back to the community, namely those challenged by
mental illness and poverty, unable to help themselves.
The LA Phil Affiliates have long been involved in giving
back to the community and to the orchestra, and Robert’s campaign represents an organization and platform
that is both unique and praiseworthy, with several members of the orchestra giving back to the community.
Street Symphony, which he directs, is a registered 501
(c)3 non-profit organization that promotes on-site outreach concerts for greatly underserved members of the
community, presented by local classical musicians of
the highest artistic standard.
Street Symphony came about after Robert met Nathaniel Ayres around 2008 at Disney Hall through the
LA Times reporter, Steve Lopez, who had written an
article about Robert when he joined the Phil. At the
same time, Robert had been reading about Nathaniel,
which led to Robert’s working with him. Robert later had
the opportunity to speak about his work with Nathaniel
at the Technology, Entertainment, Design conference,
which is a very prestigious platform. TED showcases
ideas that matter in any discipline. Robert’s TED blog
online has a couple hundred thousand viewers now
and, from speaking about Nathaniel at TED, Robert
was “inspired further to create a platform to reach out to
more people who were like Nathaniel, living homeless
on Skid Row and suffering from severe mental illness.”
Robert continued, “We’ve probably done about 25 concerts there so far and my Philharmonic colleagues,
namely Danny Rothmuller, who has recently retired as
Associate Principal Cello Emeritus; Carrie Dennis, our
Principal Viola; Ben Ullery, our Assistant Principal Viola; and several other members, Jin-Shan Dai, Barry
Gold, and Mitch Newman. These musicians have just
poured out their hearts and...we’ve had a chance to
play some really spectacular music for these audiences.”
Robert described how overwhelming the community
support has been in getting this project launched. “The
audience response has truly shown us that this music
has a healing force.…We’ve been shown that this muSpring 2013
sic is a language that can speak beyond physical barriers such as the walls of prisons and sometimes even
more importantly, psychological barriers that separate
us and sometimes create an association that leads to
stigma --- and it maybe allows us to have a chance to
interact on a really truly human level.”
Affiliates News: Have you found that your results with
some of these mental illnesses have attracted worldwide notice, perhaps physicians and mental health experts from all over the world?
Robert Gupta: Well, we have, and I have had a
chance to speak about Street Symphony further at a
number of conferences….We have the great privilege
of having a really prestigious scholar of neuroscience,
António Damásio.” Robert explained that Damásio
serves on the Street Symphony advisory committee
and researches the neuroscience of “what’s going on
while we play for these audiences.”
Street symphony has even expanded to include one of
their newest venues, the LA County jails. Robert explained, “We’re working alongside of the LA County
Sheriff’s Department as well as a number of LA County
judges who have started the program for educating the
incarcerated called Merit, a program that has had one
of the greatest efficacy levels when it comes to lowering
recidivism in Los Angeles County. We also had a

chance to play for a number of inmates, over 1500, this
past summer in a series of 15 or 16 concerts throughout the year, both male and female groups. That’s become really wonderful as well to reach out to those individuals.” One inmate was quoted as having said, "For an
hour and a half, I closed my eyes and I wasn't in jail anymore."
AN: It’s almost ironic, you could end up making up a
bigger mark in helping to heal mental illness having
been a musician than had you originally gone into medicine.
RG: You know, Gary, I think you hit the nail right on the
head. I don’t think I quite thought about it in that way
but you’re right. In a way it’s applying what has been
my deepest passion as a human being -- to make music and to share that music with an audience that would
otherwise not have access to it. It’s become one of the
most meaningful things I can do.
AN: Is this related to Hindustani types of beliefs? In
your new CD there is a lot of spiritualism and there is
some of this that is also involved in the communication
to these mental health inmates and other ill individuals.
RG: Well, very much. I feel that one of the paradigms
that I came up with the Hindu culture is that the idea of
service is paramount. Music becomes an act of human
service when it’s shared this way and we share our
problems and our lives with individuals who are not in
the best of health or in the best of times.
AN: Speaking of that, I understand that the proceeds of
your new CD, Suryodaya, are going to help these individuals.
RG: It was such a joy working with Bob Attiyeh at Yarlung Records. I am so grateful to Yarlung for creating
the platform to support a young artist and really giving
me the reins and trusting me so much to allow me to
not only experiment with the music that was on the album and composing a Raga [Raga Jaunpuri] and exploring many different types of music but also in what
the album represents – and what the message of the
album supports – all proceeds of the album go to support the work of Street Symphony, specifically the supplementary grant that Street Symphony just received
from the National Endowment of the Arts to create a
concert series for underserved veterans throughout Los
Spring 2013
Angeles so that’s what the proceeds from Suryodaya
will go to support.
Robert further told about works included on the CD,
John Harbison’s Four Songs of Solitude and Joe Pereira’s Partita. Besides being the Principal Timpanist of
the LA Philharmonic, Joe is “a wonderful friend and a
wonderful composer. When I heard Joe’s piece the first
time it was for cello and I actually transposed it for the
violin.…From that time to the recording session the
piece really transformed…. It was like playing a percussion instrument--being a percussionist more than being
a violinist, in a way.”
That links with Robert’s “uncle,” Badal Roy, who contributed to the album with his percussive talent on the tabla
in Calcutta Sunrise. Robert explained, “’Uncle’ is a term
of endearment. We are not related by blood in any way
but Badal Roy has been a very close friend of the family and my father. He was actually in the hospital when I
was born so he’s been a very close friend and he’s always been my ‘uncle,’ in a way. He’s played all over the
world, with Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman. He’s a
really special man.”
Robert also explained his title, Suryodaya. “It is Sunrise that also means the grace of light. There’s a quote
that Bob [Attiyeh] included in his liner notes, by Robert
Schumann, and is quoted on the Street Symphony
Website as well. ‘To send light into the darkness of
men's hearts - such is the duty of the artist.’ That’s really what Street Symphony stands for in its most pure
form. To literally go into the darkness of these places
and make music and bring light in probably one of the
most depressing places in their lives. That’s also very
much what the album stands for: It is recalling a type of
inner light that can emerge from the shadow of a single
violin.”
