This area was a popular place to go in the late 1880's and early 1900's and the hot springs in the area
were used for medicinal purposes. The sandy trails are surrounded by beautiful desert vegetation with
the southern route climbing onto the Sentinel Plain lava flow - a landscape of lava from 15 to 45 meters

Alto Pit OHV Area

ATV and dirt bike riders enjoy 400 acres with approximately 20 miles of motorized trails, 2 cross-country
areas, and a designated children's area. The main area is a former gravel pit at 6,200 foot elevation just
below Granite Mountain. There is also a smaller gravel pit. Rock and granite surface the area. A host is
available to provide information and assist visitors.

There is a 'Tot Lot' and beginner loop near the main entrance that offers a wide variety of terrain on a
fun little trail loop. Amenities include picnic tables, restrooms, as well as a pavillion and group areas.
Camping is available in one of the many individual campsites flow - a landscape of lava from 15 to 45
meters thick
Black Hills Box Canyon

Some of the trails cross the Hasayampa River at different points. The river flows most of the year and is
usually very shallow and narrow but during some seasons it can get particularly wide and deep making it
difficult to cross (see photos). It has a bottom of soft sand that will quickly capture you if you don’t keep
some momentum.

If staging from the south entrance follow the trail along the river bank upstream for about 1.5 miles and
you will see a primitive campsite on the west bank with a private "beach" shaded by large trees. This
place is called "The Box" and it's got a unique tropical and sort of spooky feel to it with a narrow rock
canyon/cave in the back.

The main staging area is large, flat, and meticulously maintained. There is a separate beginner’s area
that is sometimes used for ATV training courses. The staging area can be busy on weekends, but due to
the large number of good camping spots you can usually still find a comfortable place.

There are plenty of easy to moderate trails, as well as some advanced level single track routes, with
some trails stretching all the way into neighboring regions. While most of the land is BLM, there are
some adjoining areas that may require a State Trust permit to ride.
Bulldog Canyon OHV Area

Primarily a 4x4 playground, this area has numerous rocky desert trails with some great scenery. A gate
combination code and a permit is required to access the area, which can be obtained or in person from
the Tonto National Forest. The permit is free but you will need to provide a driver's license or some
other valid form of identification.

The south staging area has a really fun play pit with numerous trails and it comprises the most
interesting terrain for ATVs and motorcycles. The rules state clearly that you need to stay on marked
trails only.
Camp Verde Trails

Camp Verde is situated at the southern (downstream) end of the Verde Valley, surrounded by a
landscape of 6,000 to 7,000 foot highlands. Within the surrounding region are nine federal wilderness
areas, woven with a network of trails leading to some of Arizona's most beautiful vistas. Camp Verde is
also the only gateway to Arizona's two Wild and Scenic Rivers.

Camp Verde spans 18 miles of the Verde River, a popular place for a more leisurely trip in a kayak, canoe
or anything else that floats. A web of urban trails leads to nearby bluffs and the occasional ancient
pueblo.
Charouleau Gap

This is a moderate 4x4 trail that stretches about 19 miles from N. Lago Del Oro Parkway all the way to
Oracle. The trail is maintained by the Tucson Rough Riders club, and consists mostly of rocky creek bed
washes, deep ruts and some steep climbs. There is not much in the way of actual motorcycle trails or
ATV trails here, but there are a few shallow water crossings and some great desert scenery.

This scenic route is for 4-wheel drive vehicles only. The road up and over Samaniego Ridge is rough and
rocky and requires good ground clearance as well as excellent traction.
Chloride Mine Trails

Located high above in the mountains overlooking the town of Chloride are numerous miles of that lead
to abandoned silver mines, ancient petroglyph paintings and historic buildings. Wild mustangs still roam
the area and can be found in this high desert area. Packsaddle and Windy Point campgrounds offer
direct trail access and are surrounded by juniper and pinyon pine trees.

Crown King, Arizona, a hamlet at about 5900 feet elevation in the pine forest of the Bradshaw
Mountains, attracts people from nearby Phoenix and the Sonoran Desert like a magnet during the
summer.

The trails are usually very dry and dusty but they do wind through some interesting desert vegetation
that consist of scrub brush, saguaro and cholla cactuses. The trails eventually go near a small pond
which serves a watering hole for some of the local livestock

This large area has miles and miles of very flat terrain. There are some marked trails, but they are really
just smooth wide jeep roads with occasional dips into the sand washes.
Florence Coke Ovens

Among the many things to see here are the “Box Canyon”, which is a tall, narrow and colorful canyon
that has a small runoff stream that flows through the center during the winter months, various mines,
an old house or cabin and five well-preserved coke ovens.

Some of the rock-face climbs will be challenging for some jeeps and trucks, however most intermediate
motorcycle riders and ATVers should not have too much of a problem. Do beware of the potential for
flash flooding of the box canyon area during and after heavy rain. This is a great trail for any type of
vehicle - lifted 4x4, Jeep, motorcycle, or ATV. A good time is guaranteed.
Fort Valley Trail System

This part of the Coconino National Forest offers miles of nicely maintained multiple use single track trails
that form long loops with gradual elevation changes with scenic mountain views. Most of the trails
consists of loose soil, some narrow switchbacks and a few rocky sections.

The trails are open year-round but the best time to visit is around March through mid December. Please
note that these trails are open to hikers, horseback riding and mountain bikes. Camping and campfires
are not permitted.
Four Peaks

This Wilderness was established in 1984, and contains approximately 60,740 acres with a major
mountain rising up in its center from the desert foothills. The Four Peaks themselves are visible for many
miles, and are one of the most widely recognized landmarks in central Arizona. Elevations range from
1,900 feet near Apache Lake to 7,600 feet on Brown's Peak.

A large part of this wilderness was burned by a human-caused fire in 1996. It will take decades for the
pine-covered mountains to recover.A group size of no more than 15 people and no more than 15 head
of pack or saddle animals of any type is enforced within this wilderness year-round.

With a variety of play areas and a well maintained staging area featuring shaded tables, BBQ grills and
restrooms, this is a great choice for a day of play with the kids. The main trail starts out as a long and
easy sand wash then gets a little chunkier as it heads up into the hills.

Kelly Canyon

A peaceful ponderosa-forested canyon with tons of bouldering on cliffs and boulders of Coconino
sandstone. Dramatic curving slashes stripe the walls, the result of lithified sand dunes deposited 260
million years ago. These slashes birth many slopes and incut rails, lending to a unique and distinctly
technical sort of climbing.

Rock quality at Kelly is notoriously variable: bullet-hard in some places, horribly sandy and crumbly
elsewhere. Tread carefully, especially on less-trafficked problems, and don't forget to bring a softbristled brush.
Log Corral Canyon

Primarily a jeep trail, this area offers superb views of Four Peaks, Bartlett Lake and the surrounding
desert hills. The main trail to the south is very tough, with deep washouts, sand gullies and you really
need a modified jeep, custom 4x4, a motorcycle, or an ATV with a lift to enjoy this trail. (These rocks are,
and a normal vehicle simply won't make it.)

There are no services and it is slow going, so food, water, a repair kit, and a winch are strongly
recommended. For an easier time, you can follow the sand wash north from the staging area for a short
but fun ATV trail with great turns. Nearby has tons of easier riding as well, and it's just down the road.
Maverick Trail

This was put in June 2010 and is around 45 miles long and winds through a scenic ponderosa pine forest.
The trail starts near Pinetop and ends near Clay Springs. Future plans are to extend the trails toward
Springerville.

This OHV area offers that range from easy to difficult. Wide and rocky trails with some sharp inclines and
a couple of riverbed washes make up most of the terrain. There are very few actual dirt bike trails here.
The loops are generally short, and consist mainly of roads.

Mt. Lemmon Control Road

Open to street legal vehicles only and closed during winter months due to snow and ice, this 25 mile
long maintained dirt road begins at Peppersauce Campground and leads to the top of Mt. Lemmon. The
Mt. Lemmon summit offers various restaurants and cafes, making this a nice and easy dual sport ride, or
if you have a street legal ATV, as many do in Arizona.

large trailers and RVs. There are no pull-throughs and the sites are about 22 feet deep.
Munds Park OHV Trail System

Located just minutes away from nearby Flagstaff, this area offers about seven miles of trails that is open
to OHVs less than 62 inches. Currently the only trailhead that can accommodate the larger machines is
at Iron Springs Staging Area but there are plans to eventually widen the cattle guard entrance at Janice
Place Staging Area.

permitted at the staging area however is permitted off of Forest Roads 240 or 78A. The trails are closed
during the winter months and generally reopens around April or May, weather permitting.
Pima-Bartlett Motorcycle Loop

This area of Tonto National Forest offers a good mix of trails including some single track, double track,
sand washes and banked turns. The climate is hot and dry and there is no shade. Water and other
services are not available either, but there are plenty of places to boat, camp and ski at nearby Bartlett
Lake on the Verde River

some of the trails to the south of Wildcat Staging area (Granite Mountain Multi-Use Trails) have been
closed to motorized use since May 2008 due to dust control ordinances. The closed areas have been
marked and fenced off, but the vast majority of the areas immediately surrounding the Wildcat staging
area are open.
Redington Pass

This secluded area has several miles of very nice motorcycle and ATV trails and miles of surrounding fun
jeep trails that offer beautiful panoramic desert views. The trails are somewhat rocky, but still a lot of
fun on a motorcycle. (The trail system itself is maintained by the Tucson Rough Riders club, so be sure to
say thanks for the great work.)

The Arizona Game and Fish Department occasionally sets up a checkpoint on the main access road to
enforce hunting regulations but they also check for OHV stickers. It is only legal to ride on the main
access road if you make your bike street legal, and you'll still need an OHV sticker.
Saffel Canyon OHV Trail

This OHV area consists of one 21 mile loop, one 4 mile loop and a tot-lot that winds through a mixed
ponderosa pine, conifer and pinion-juniper forest. Colorful wildflowers border most of the trail and
panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys are among the many highlights.

The trail system is well marked and rated easy-medium difficulty with some tight sections for ATVs. The
staging area is open for day use only however camping can be found near the town of Greer, Big Lake
and Lyman Lake State Park.
Santa Rita OHV Routes

This system of rocky jeep trails and sand washes has a small staging area with a map kiosk and loading
ramp but no services. Camping is not permitted at the main staging area in the north, but there are
numerous primitive campsites near the south entrance and along the trails.

and chunky 4x4 roads. Still, the area is pretty fun to check out. The primary roads connecting the staging
areas are open to street legal OHVs only.
Shea Pit and Osbourne Wash Area

Home to the Parker 400 Desert Race this large area has multiple access points and consists of chunky
jeep trails, sandy washes with various cactuses and creosote bushes scattered about. Primitive camping
is permitted and there is no shade or amenities onsite. The nearby towns of Parker and Lake Havasu City
offer numerous services, boating and recreation opportunities.

– Parker 425 & 250 Desert Race. The Parker Desert Races includes different pro classes including dirt
bike, ATV’s, UTV’s and Trophy Trucks. Osborn Wash is adjacent and to the south of the Spectator Area.

This is a great area for a full day ride, or two days of exploration, but the trails are generally more suited

St. David Pits

Located just outside of St. David, this play pit area offers various jumps and turns in a small but very
unique looking canyon. The area gets very dusty, and there are no services here and no fees, but the
locals are friendly and scenery is very cool as the pictures show.

There is also a large sand wash that runs through town and out to the hills that makes for a fun ride. The
nearby city of Tombstone is also a major attraction.

Standard Wash OHV Trails are located just 5 miles south of Lake Havasu City, AZ. This low desert
destination offers more than 7,500 acres with challenging and easy trails for ATV’s, UTV’s, and dirt bikes.
Open camping is allowed. Best time to ride is in the spring, fall, and winter seasons. Make sure and carry
plenty of water with you on those warmer days.

There are a variety of small play areas, and there is an easy loop for beginners if you head north and
west from the staging area until you hit the small wash.
Swansea Townsite

The surrounding trails are mostly hard packed jeep trails with small sharp rocks and some sand washes.
The terrain is largely flat with some scenic canyons and rolling hills but nothing too challenging. Larger
RVs and trailers are not recommended to go all the way to the townsite, as the last three miles of the
main access road gets a little narrow and steeper, with a one-lane bridge (8-ton limit)..

but there are not many challenges for aggressive riders.

This is primarily a hunting area and has no real motorcycle trails, but rather jeep trails and roads. You
will find some border crossing foot paths and smuggling paths that would make great single track
motorcycle trails. The roads are chunky, and loaded with small sharp rocks - enough to take most of the
fun out of it for motorcyclists.
