By Marco Miranda
patients, in addition to reporting any
changes in behaviors, health or pain
directly to the patient’s nurse, and
electronically documenting our visits.
T
he holistic care we provide at the
end of life for our patients at Hospice
of Yuma is truly a concerted team
effort. As certified nursing assistants
– or CNA's – we work very closely in
with the nurses, social workers, and
the whole Hospice of Yuma staff. We
operate as liaisons between the patient
and nurse, serving as the eyes and ears
of the Hospice of Yuma staff—that
is, because we come into contact with
our patients more frequently than any
other staff member. A CNA’s work at
Hospice of Yuma differs to working
at healthcare facilities or other home
healthcare agencies. At Hospice
of Yuma we must be aware of our
patient’s condition, as our principal
goal is to facilitate the end-of-life
process, and mitigate pain as much as
we possibly can for both the patient
and the family. A Hospice of Yuma
CNA’s routine obligations are to visit
patients at their homes, and provide
compassionate, hygienic care to these
At the beginning of my work day,
I ordinarily stop by the office and
arrange my day’s agenda, make
phone calls to patients, and gather any
necessary supplies. Shortly thereafter,
I make my way out to my first patient’s
house; my day has officially begun.
Upon arrival, I greet the family, which
may or may not include a couple of
ferociously barking Chihuahuas, then
proceed with taking my patient’s vital
signs and assisting them with their bath
or shower. I document the activities
engaged in during the visit—the
patient’s vitals, any changes to health,
appetite or pain—all on paper. This
continues throughout the day, as I drive
off to my next patient’s house.
In my visits with patients, depending
on their abilities and health, I either
shower or bathe them in bed after
which I make sure to leave them in
a comfortable, relaxed position in a
place of their preference. Throughout
all of this, it is of utmost importance to
me, as it is to my fellow CNA’s, that I
maintain my patient’s sense of dignity
and their sense of independence as
best I can. I remain conscious of their
feelings, give them privacy, and allow
them to do as much as they can on their
own. Not one visit is ever the same.
On occasion, I might cut or paint a
patient's nails, assist a family member
in cutting a patient’s hair, assist the
nurse in changing a wound dressing,
etc. The job is never redundant which
keeps the work appealing. The one
aspect of a Hospice of Yuma CNA
that remains constant is the joy that
comes at the conclusion of my patient
visits, when I leave my patient in
a comfortable state, with their hair
brushed or combed, well-dressed
and smelling nice. It puts a smile in
my heart and on my face to see my
patients looking lively and not ill.
At the end of my day, after I’ve seen
all of my patients, I’m responsible for
transferring my paper documentation
to the computer documentation system
we have at the office. I document what
occurred in my visits with my patients,
their vital signs, pain level (if any),
appetite, weight, occurrence of bowel
movement and urine, and any adverse
events that may have occurred.
We do this so that there is a constant
dialogue available through notes
between the nursing assistants and the
nurses and physicians. Through our
meticulous documentation, we make
sure that our patients' health status is
always current.

A Message From Executive Director John Williams
"What Can I Do To Help?"
Each year I have the wonderful
opportunity to speak to many
community groups, organizations
and churches. It is one of my favorite
things to do. I have met some
wonderful people over the years who
support Hospice of Yuma and have a
heart for helping others. One question
that I am asked constantly is, “What
can I do to help?” I look forward to
answering this question because it
gives me the chance to speak about
all of the opportunities people have
to contribute their time, money, and
talents to assist our mission of caring
for the terminally ill. As we enter the
summer months, we are desperately
in need of both financial support
and volunteers. Please consider
helping Hospice of Yuma. Below
are some different ways you could
assist us and get involved with our
organization.
Legacy Partner Program. Hospice
of Yuma has an annual giving
program that many donors enjoy
taking part in. The Legacy Partner
Program allows donors to give one
time per year or break their giving
down into quarterly or monthly
installments. There are various levels
of giving and each level affords the
donor different benefits. We take
every opportunity to keep the donor
active and informed about everything
happening at Hospice of Yuma.
For more information go online to
www.hospiceofyuma.com or contact
us for a Legacy Partner Program
Brochure.
Volunteer Your Time. Hospice
of Yuma volunteers work in every
part of the program; they are our
greatest assets and we are always
looking for volunteers to assist us in
various aspects of our organization.
Make a donation. A significant share Training is provided to individuals
of Hospice of Yuma’s budget comes who have an interest in patient
from donations. Each gift, large or
support, administrative and/or
small, helps us ensure that services,
bereavement activities. There are also
medications, supplies, and equipment opportunities to volunteer your time

their families will continue. Plus, it
is a wonderful way to express your
support.
To ensure that your exact intentions
are carried out and not decided
by the state, your bequest should
be clearly stated in your original
Will or Trust documents. A bequest
may include cash, stocks, bonds,
securities, real estate, pension
plans, retirement accounts, life
insurance or other property. It may
also be a percentage of your estate
or designated as a specific amount
of money. Using percentages will
give you better flexibility and allow
for changes in your finances. Your
bequest may also provide valuable
tax benefits. It is best to contact your
attorney, personal accountant, or
estate planner to assist you in this
important matter.
Donate Property. You can donate
any type of property – residential,
commercial, industrial, farm
land, etc. Property donations are
used to fund our charitable care
program. One of our long term
needs is for property to build a
Hospice House as well as property
to eventually relocate our office.
For more information and to donate
your property, call John Williams,
Executive Director at 928-343-2222.
Attend a fundraising event.
Hospice of Yuma holds several
fundraising events a year that
directly benefit the continued
mission of the organization. These
events raise hundreds of thousands
of dollars and help bring awareness
to the services that Hospice of
Yuma offers to the community. The
largest of these events include the
Monster Mash, a costume party,
dinner and silent auction event held
the third Saturday in October every
year and the P.K. Hodges South
West Agriculture Golf Tournament
held every April. Contact our Fund
Development office at 928-3432222 for more information about
upcoming events.
Shop at Hospice of Yuma’s Thrift
Shop. Most everyone loves to shop
and we have a place where treasures
are kept that you might just want or
need. Hospice of Yuma’s Thrift Shop
accepts donations of used, still in
good condition, furniture, clothing
and everything else you can image.
We clean the items and make them
available for resale. All the proceeds
from sales go to support the Hospice
of Yuma Program, Charitable Care,
and Operations. Our Thrift Shop is
not just a normal Thrift Shop. Our
Thrift Shop Manager Dorothy refers
to it as a Thrift Boutique. If you have
never come by to check it out, you
are missing out on some incredible
treasures. Come by and take a look.
The Hospice of Yuma Thrift Shop
is located just down from the main
office at 1808 South 8th Avenue. I
promise you won’t be disappointed.
Invite us to speak at your
community organization or church.
Hospice of Yuma has a speaker’s
bureau made up of Staff, Board
Members, and Volunteers that would
love to speak at your community
group function. We cover many
topics involving death and dying,
planned giving, and estate planning,
to name a few.
Learn more and tell others. Contact
Hospice of Yuma by phone or email
or come into our office to request
information about our program. Make
certain your doctor and your place
of worship have information about
the programs and services available
from Hospice of Yuma for those
who may need it. Most importantly,
help spread the word that there is a
difference in Hospice Providers in
our area. Hospice of Yuma is the only
non-profit hospice created by our
community for our community.
Thank you for all your support.
Continued from Cover
My job as a certified nursing assistant
at Hospice of Yuma is very gratifying.
I get a phenomenal sense of helping
people, and that is why I love what I
do. Ultimately, visiting my patients
does not feel as if I am visiting
patients, but more like family and
friends. Walking into a patient’s
home and putting a smile on their
face is absolutely precious. Working
for Hospice of Yuma has taught me
a lot as a certified nursing assistant,
but more importantly as a person; my
patients have instilled so much wisdom
and knowledge into me, it’s unreal. I
recognize that we, as Hospice of Yuma
staff members, leave an everlasting
impact on the lives of many patients
and their families in our community,
which makes my job that much more
satisfying.
Things that Hospice of Yuma
needs...

Golf Tournament
By Alysia Munoz
Our 30th Annual P.K. Hodges SW Ag Golf Tournament kicked off with a bang,
starting with beautiful weather, delicious food, and wonderful surroundings. It made
for a great three day golf tournament. Each year our golf committee devotes time and
support to further our golf tournament in order to benefit the patients on our service.
Our generous sponsors and the golfers themselves also provide great support to our
organization. I am proud to announce this year’s golf tournament raised $39,000.00
for our terminally ill patients. Thank you to our committee, golfers, and
sponsors!! Save the Date for next year’s golf tournament – April 7-9, 2016.

The vision is not as she was at death,
but usually a mature figure from our 67
years.
I am calling this The Mysterious
Phenomenon because the way
Webster’s Dictionary defines a
"phenomenon" is exactly how it comes
to me. I have heard others tell of
experiences such as this and wish, by
describing it, that it can be clear that
this happens and, in recovery time, it
is good. It is never menacing, never
vocal, and always leaves one with a
thought that your loved one was there.
We’d like to extend our appreciation
to Mr. Wilcox for sharing his story
with us. We’re glad to know that
our bereavement services are useful,
but more than that, that there can be
moments of peace, remembrance, and
recovery during the period of grief
after the passing of a loved one. We
hope it will also serve those who have
experienced a similar phenomenon.

Madge Iris Jones
1922-2015
Madge Jones was a giver. She gave her time, affection, and generosity to the
patients and families of Hospice of Yuma for more than 20 years. Her legacy
will be one of kindness and love. She may no longer be with us but she will
surely live on in our memories. Thank you Madge for giving us all so much.
