away from home.
“They go in and great everyone as if they’re their best
friend,” says Moore.
The couple has been taking
their family dogs into Soldiers’
Memorial Hospital for 14 years
as St. John therapy animals,
visiting residents and staff in
the transitional and long-term
residential units and “brightening their day.”
“Bob saw a poster one day,
and we contacted St. John
about the program,” Moore, a
sergeant with 14 Wing Greenwood’s Education and Training
Organization, says. Geub, a
sergeant, is 405 Squadron’s
training coordinator. They had
two dogs, chocolate labs Otto
and Papillion, who passed the
training and testing to become
official program members.
“When you’re testing a dog,
you would have people with
walkers and canes and chairs
and lots of clutter, pretending
to be a residence, and see
how they’d do. Any dog that
just wants to be touched and
talked to, and can just sit and
lie down and be content can be
a therapy dog.”
Otto and Papi put in over
200 hours of visiting time at
SMH over the years: both have
since passed away, but Moore
and Geub have added Shadow and Riley to the “team,”
and one-year-old Koal is in
training. Geub was hoping to
have him “in action” over the
weekend.
“Taking a dog in just opens
things up,” Moore says. “We
try and go at least once a
week, sometimes up to three
hours, and the dogs just love
it – love it.”
They also seem to have a
natural affinity for the people
they’re visiting, the couple
feels. Moore remembers visiting a man years ago, who
always greeted them in his arm
chair. One day, they arrived to

the way to visit veterans and patients at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital.
The couple has been bringing their “fur kids” to the hospital on

Proteau realized as he arrived at 14 Wing Greenwood last summer was the high level of seriousness backing the base’s network of “champions.”
Awareness and education campaigns around
discrimination, disabilities, women and minorities are led by appointed base leaders, and Proteau took on the mantle of champion for visible
minorities along with command duties at 404
Squadron.
“By appointing the responsibilities to the commanding officers of units, you make a statement
leadership is on board, and a champion has a
captive audience at many opportunities to talk
about these issues,” Proteau says.
While he attended a Kings County multicultural
event in the fall on behalf of the base, African
Heritage Month, February, is his first substantial
chance to focus on visible minority issues. A
proclamation signed by Wing Commander Iain
Huddleston will be read at February’s wing council meeting and published around the base, and
supporting information will be circulated through
defence team links here in Greenwood. Proteau
understands the challenge and sensitiveness of
identifying individual minority representatives
as part of base efforts to support and educate
everyone, but hopes the base’s overall commitment makes a difference.
“I think everyone, no matter who they are,
wants the same opportunities, wants to be
evaluated just like everyone else and wants to
be equal,” Proteau says. “I never thought of this
as an issue, but we’re supposed to be totally
transparent in what we do - and we may take it
for granted that we are.”

find him in bed, and “Otto just
hopped up so gently, and just
laid down beside him. His arm
came up and around and you
could just see the life come
back in his face,” Moore says.
They visited another man
for years and, when he passed
away and his wife moved into
the residence, they continued almost as family. Shared
chats about sewing projects
underway, models under construction at a hobby table,
experiences in past work lives,
extended families and more
“brings back memories and
can do wonders for their wellbeing,” Moore says.
“For these people, their daily
menus repeat, there’s no difference between a Saturday,
a Tuesday or a holiday,” says
Geub. “I definitely think, for
these people, the dogs’ visits
are gratifying and make their
day.”
There are tough days as
well, the couple acknowledges,
when someone they’ve visited
many times before is no longer
in their accustomed chair or
room.
“It’s hard, but it’s so gratifying,” Moore says. “It’s just
fantastic what a dog will do:
petting something, they say,
is the best medicine there is.”

Prevention, training key to FES’ 2013 success

14 Wing Greenwood Fire and
Emergency Services was busy
through 2013 in all respects,
from fire response to life safety.
The section’s suppression
platoons responded to 279
calls for assistance and, thankfully, while there was some
property loss, no one was seriously injured. National Defence
and the Royal Canadian Air
Force experience less fires per
capita due mostly to mandatory training of all department
personnel, fire engineering
practices and regularly scheduled prevention inspections.

over 7,000 calls in 2013.
There were 11 reportable
fires during 2013: five on the
wing, two public service responses – one for the summer
warehouse fire in Kingston and
another for a private vehicle
at the Greenwood Mall. There
were also four wildland fires.
There were 127 non-fire incidents, including false alarms,
fuel spills, rescues and motor vehicle accidents. Crews
also responded to 41 medical
emergencies and, while some
were quite serious, all resulted
in positive outcomes.
On the aircraft side of the
house, there were an even 100
responses for emergencies and
hazardous process stand-by.

Sergeant Trevor Jessome, a member of 14 Construction
Engineering Squadron, Bridgewater, didn’t get a chance
to tie on the Masterchef apron strings January 20, as the
Canadian TV show premiered and whittled down 50 top
amateur cooks to 25. Thousands of Canadians applied
to cook for judges Michael Bonacini, Alvin Leung and
Claudio Aprile – and the chance to become Canada’s first
Masterchef and win $100,000. Jessome made the initial
short list and prepared pan grilled boneless leg of lamb
in herb crust with ribbons, yellow zucchini, red onion
and cherry tomato and kale pesto gnocchi; but it wasn’t
enough to advance him to the next round in the cook-off.

Second Language Services
FULL-TIME POSITION
The Coordinator of Outreach and Second Language Services is
responsible for the GMFRC’s outreach program and ongoing liaison
with local military and civilian communities. This includes providing
information, community outreach, and education information on posting
and referral services. Outreach Services will also be provided to CF
members and families in Reserve Unit locations as well as those
CF families living outside of the immediate area. This position also
coordinates Second Language Services by developing, implementing,

Education:
• Candidate should have an undergrad degree in public relations,
marketing, communications, or social sciences from a recognized
university.
• Our population includes families requiring service in the French
language. Candidate MUST possess excellent oral and written
communication skills in both official languages.
• Translator diploma or equivalent training and experience.
Experience:
• Knowledge of public relations practices and community development
processes and possess a friendly, outgoing, cooperative personality.
• Experience with development, implementation, and delivery of
individual and family programs/services.
• Highly proficient in the use of MS Office Software.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and assessment skills as well
as sensitivity and tact in dealing with people under stressful conditions
- entails the ability to tolerate high stress levels, and ability to respond
to crisis situations.
• Exhibits characteristics of warmth, empathy, humour, and a nonjudgmental philosophy of care and strong understanding and
application of ethical principles.
• A clear understanding of the community development process is
essential and a working knowledge of community resources in the
catchment area is required. In-depth knowledge of civilian/provincial
agencies and organizations that can provide support to military families.
• Excellent public speaking ability is essential.
• Demonstrated ability to organize and manage caseload effectively to
meet deadlines.
• A strong belief in the principle of volunteerism is required.
• A good understanding of the unique needs of CF families as well as a
demonstrated ability to work effectively within both an inter-disciplinary
team and in a self-directed environment while responding to the
challenges of a demanding multi-faceted role.
• 37.5 hours per week (occasional evening & weekend hours are
required. Flexibility is a must.)

Forum, will take place over
two evenings, February 18
and 19, to accommodate
busy family schedules, with
both sessions starting at 7
p.m. at the Military Family
Resource Centre (MFRC).
On either evening, military
family members will have
the opportunity to informally
chat with representatives
from the Family Information
Line, the National Military
Family Council, the MFRC,
SISIP (Service Income Security Insurance Plan), OSISS
(Operational Stress Injury
Social Support) and others.
The newly founded RCAF
Family Support Team will
also be available with information on national programs
and ways “grass root” solutions may be developed for
RCAF families.

than ever, and this is an
important chance to connect with families directly
to let them know what’s
available,” says LieutenantColonel Jean Mallais, who
heads the team running the
Family Forums. “We’re assembling key contacts who
have a vested interest in the
well-being of military families to provide information
on how easy it is to access
first-class support.”

in 1984. During his career, in addition to many postings

January 28, families were treated to a morning of fun as the Greenwood Military
Family Resource Centre and the 14 Wing Library teamed up to provide fun activities
to celebrate National Literacy Day 2014. The theme this year was “15 minutes of
family fun,” and fun is indeed what the children attending the activity had! A wide
variety of children’s stories were read “under the story tree” by guest readers Jill
Jackson, 14 Wing community recreation director; and Mike Taylor, Personnel Support
Program manager (shown). Families also received a literacy package of activities and
a free book to take home so they can continue to make literacy an important part of
their daily routines.
