The 75-year heritage – and future - of four Royal Canadian Air Force Squadrons will be showcased at a June gathering at 14 Wing Greenwood, Nova Scotia; along with 50 years’ worth of VP International history. Organizers expect up to 600 guests to attend anniversary events over the week, all highlighting the strong relationships within the Canadian aviation community, and with international partners. Twenty-three nations with VPI affiliations are invited to participate. “It’s a chance to reconnect and meet with old friends and talk about our history and heritage,” Hone says. “And it goes the other way: with today’s personnel talking about the challenges that go along with the advances in today’s technology, the new overland mission, the integration of the flood of information available in today’s aircraft and the analysis and communications required to turn it into a tactical plan.” It is easy to point to the pressures and challenges in the generations of aviation heritage encompassed over the past 75 years, and see how they evolve: 413 Squadron can be out the door on a search and rescue mission within 30 minutes of a call, and the danger is just as real as bombing runs over Second World War Europe or surveillance flights over Afghanistan or Iraq today. “We’re all part of the Air Force, all working in support of Canada – and that continues today,” LeBlanc says. “Folks take great pride in that, and the tradition continues.” 14 Wing Greenwood Commander Colonel Pat Thauberger has several hats to don at this June gathering: officer in command of the hosting 14 Wing Greenwood facilities, a past commander of 404 Squadron and patron of the VP International association, in addition to having been a crew member on 405, 404 and 415 squadrons. “This is such a great opportunity to collectively remember our Former Lynxes invited back for 406 Squadron’s 75th Celebrations marking 75 years of operations for 406 (Maritime Operational Training) Squadron are May 13 and 14 in Shearwater. Online course offers radiation safety awareness Several misconceptions exist about ionizing radiation and nuclear safety within the Department of National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces community, and the general public. Events surrounding the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in Japan highlight society’s general misunderstanding of the impact of potential exposure to ionizing radiation. To assist DND and CAF personnel in understanding the risks associated with exposure to ionizing radiation, Director Nuclear Safety has released an online Radiation Safety Awareness (RSA) course to generate basic awareness of ionizing radiation, introduce the types of practices in DND and the CAF that use ionizing radiation and explain the role of departmental radiation safety officers in helping to manage the overall nuclear safety program. The RSA course is accessible via the Defence Learning Network and is open to all DND and CAF personnel (it takes about one to two hours to complete). If you have any questions or concerns with regards to radiation safety, contact your unit radiation safety officer or Wing Radia- tion Safety Officer Sergeant Greg Smith, 902-765-1494 local 5007. Lieutenant-Governor J.J. Grant, Premier Stephen McNeil and African Nova Scotian Affairs Minister Tony Ince joined guests from across the province at Province House January 27 to launch African Heritage Month 2016 in Nova Scotia. The theme is No. 2 Construction Battalion: the Legacy of Commitment - They Fought to Fight. The No. 2 Construction Battalion, also known as the Black Battalion, was created after the British Empire renewed its call for soldiers during the First World War. A separate battalion was the military’s response to black men who wanted to enlist, but were turned away from recruiting offices. “Despite the great prejudice that they faced, the brave men of the No. 2 Construction Battalion voluntarily stepped up to fight for king and country,” said Grant. “Their courage and legacy continue to inspire 100 years later, and it is vital that all Nova Scotians know this history.” “African Heritage Month is a celebration of culture, history, longevity and progress,” said McNeil. “This year’s theme of overcoming adversity to participate in the broader society resonates in all communities, but African Nova Scotians know it well.” The battalion formed July 5, 1916 in Pictou. Most of the more than 600 men accepted came from Nova Scotia, but others came from New Brunswick, Ontario, the West, the United States and the Caribbean. Nova Scotia Public Archives “We are proud to help promote and preserve the legacy of the battalion,” said Russell Grosse, executive director of the Black Cultural Centre of Nova Scotia. “They are a symbol of commitment in the face of adversity for all Nova Scotians.” More information on African Heritage Month and a calendar of events can be found on the African Nova Scotian Affairs website, ansa.novascotia.ca; Facebook.com/AfricanNSAffairs and Twitter through @ OfficeofANSA. Kidnapped as a child from Africa, Aminata Diallo is enslaved in South Carolina, but escapes during the chaos of the Revolutionary War. In Manhattan, she becomes a scribe for the British, recording the names of blacks who have served the King and earned freedom in Nova Scotia. But hardship and prejudice there prompt her to follow her heart back to Africa, then on to London, where she bears witness to the injustices of slavery. It is a story no listener - and no reader - will ever forget. The reading group guide is included. “Under The Story Tree” takes place every Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the library. It’s a great time to bring your youngsters to listen to stories, sing songs and make crafts. Family Literacy Day January 25 was a huge success. Be ready for leg warmers, cool sunglasses, big hair and neon colours, as teams take to ice, stage, pool and games tables. The Pep Rally was held February 19 at the Annapolis Mess to tee things up, and Winter Carnival’s main activities get underway February 22 with the opening hockey and curling games. February 25, make sure you catch the finals of both tournaments. February 26 is a full day of fun, starting with sports and games at the Fitness & Sports Centre, including the Wing Commander’s Revenge pool challenge. Take time for lunch with a food truck parked just outside, and then head off for the Amazing Race base-wide contest. Move indoors to the Annapolis Mess – and stay: it’s a Monster TGIF, the beard growing contest judging, the lip sync and closing ceremonies, followed by a band. Saturday is family day – starting with breakfast at the Mess, movies at the Zedex Theatre, bowling and skating. “This year, we’re aiming to capture those people who think, ‘Oh, Winter Carnival – been there, done that!,’” says co-chairman Central Stations Lieutenant Andrew MacNeil. With a committed team of volunteers from around the wing, working for several months on the planning, this Winter Carnival has a solid schedule, and something for everyone, MacNeil says. “The committee worked hard, they were enthusiastic and we were underway with the planning early. All our goals were met.” Sponsorship from the community has been strong, meaning Winter Carnival bracelet holders have a chance at $6,500 in prizes: there are three main raffle prizes – a $2,500 travel voucher, a $1,500 snowblower and a $1,000 smart TV; and there are door prizes to be drawn at every event. The $10 carnival all-access bracelets are available at all wing orderly rooms. Bracelet owners have free entry to all events, are automatically entered in the three main prize draws and have a chance at door prizes at every event they attend. Bracelets are available for all defence team members and spouses. MacNeil himself is looking forward to the Friday night main events at the Mess. “I like the lip sync and the party – it’s a good time,” he says. “Last year, it was on two nights. This year, it’s bigger and better – in one night. We have two stages lined up so, as the lip sync and closing awards are happening, the band (Shaydid, from Halifax) will be gearing up and ready to start on the second stage.
