The memorial stone, situated along the Greenwood Memorial Garden Walkway, offers friends and families a quiet place to remember and contemplate the sacrifices of these brave “Eagles”. It is also worth mentioning that this stone was unveiled on the eve of yet another 405 Squadron crew deployment to the Canadian Arctic to conduct surveillance and support. On 31, July 2010, approximately fifty military and civilian members stationed at Canadian Forces Station Alert braved the cold to pay their respects to the fallen crew. The poem “High Flight”, which adorns the memorial stone in Greenwood, was read during the Alert ceremony and will hopefully become a yearly act of remembrance. On behalf of the Commanding Officer of 405 (Long Range Patrol) (LRP) Squadron, Lieutenant Colonel Irvine, and the men and women of 405 (LRP) Squadron, I would like to offer my sincere thanks and appreciation for the cooperation and effort of all who helped make this dedication ceremony memorable. Many thanks to the Greenwood Military Aviation Museum, members of the VP International, members of 14 Wing Logistics and Engineering Branch, graphic designer Mr. Bruce Gormley of the Maritime Proving and Evaluation Unit, Heritage Memorials and the many businesses and individuals who generously donated and supported this significant project. As stated by LCol Irvine during the unveiling ceremony, “Our remembrance Members of 405 Long Range Patrol Squadron stand on parade during the Alert Lancaster Crash Memoof our fallen comrades remains in our hearts. Page 4 August 16, 2010 The Aurora Newspaper, 14 Wing Greenwood, NS Priority Public Service Entitlement for the Surviving Spouses of CF Personnel The Public Service Commission of Canada has established a new priority entitlement for the surviving spouses and common-law partners of Canadian Forces personnel who have died while performing their duties. The priority entitlement gives eligible spouses increased access to public service employment opportunities by placing their names and résumés on a priority listing for external federal government job competitions. Spouses then have the right to compete for positions and be appointed in priority to all other persons, except statutory priorities, to any term or indeterminate position in the public service for which they meet the essential qualifications. The program will be administered by Director Casualty Support Management (DCSM) and the Public Service Commission of Canada. A representative from DCSM will be contacting all eligible spouses to make sure they are aware of this opportunity should they choose to take advantage of the entitlement. “Director Military Family Services (DMFS) is pleased to help spread the word about this significant gesture on the part of the Canadian government, which honours and acknowledges the sacrifices of these spouses by offering them new employment opportunities that may help build a brighter future,” indicated Celine Thompson, Director, DMFS. For complete details about this opportunity, please visit the Public Service Commission’s website at http://www.psc-cfp. gc.ca/lhhr-lcrh/2010/10-07/attach-ci-joint-eng.htm. Just as the nature of Canadian Forces (CF) deployments have changed over time, the concerns of MIL callers have also evolved. This winter, the MIL was especially busy answering calls and updating messages about the deployment of CF personnel to Haiti for Operation Hestia. An officer from the Disaster Assistance Response Team provided updates to an automated MIL message box almost daily so that families could hear firsthand how their loved ones were helping with the relief effort. “Families called in regularly to hear about everything from the first baby born in the CF makeshift hospital, to how many litres of water they had made safe for drinking, to how the people of Haiti are doing,” says Robin Whitford, MIL Manager. “Though this deployment happened suddenly, it was great that word of mouth let people know where to call for information. During the two month deployment, the message boxes dedicated to Op Hestia received over 1000 hits!” The MIL provides message boxes dedicated to each military operation on deployment, and works with CF personnel to keep the boxes updated regularly. Cet hiver, les intervenants de la Ligne d’information pour les missions ont été particulièrement occupés à répondre aux appels et à mettre à jour les messages touchant le personnel des FC Tibb’s Tumblers Locksmithing Services WIDE ASSORTMENT OF KEYS Automotive Transponder Keys Available Richard Tibbel, Bonded Locksmith www.tibbslocksmithing.ca High Security Keys Safes Commercial Residential Automotive Installations Lockouts Code-Key Cutting (VWLPDWHV Rekeyed Locks IRPP Claimable 59 Stronach Mtn. The message boxes can also provide updates for families on when to expect their loved ones back from deployment. “Deployment Support Centres can use their message boxes to record the flight return timings of the soldiers returning from tour. As flight information can change right up until the last minute, the Deployment Support Centres are able to update this information with one simple recording and hundreds of families are able to call as often as they wish. During this anxious time, many families call repeatedly!” In addition to the message boxes, the MIL also provides families with access to a counselor from 8 a.m. until midnight (EST), Monday-Friday by pressing ‘0’. Callers can also leave messages for the MIL and all messages will be returned. Urgent messages will be returned even on weekends and holidays. Whether callers are working up to a deployment, already have a loved one overseas, or the reunion has brought its own set of challenges, the MIL can help make the transitions easier for families. The MIL’s services don’t start only when a loved one departs, and they don’t end when the planes land back in Canada. Families are welcome to call the MIL anytime with their questions, concerns or even just to talk. Call 1-800-866-4546 or visit www.missioninfoline.ca for more information. Page 10 The Aurora Newspaper, 14 Wing Greenwood, NS August 16, 2010 Mr Nelson Mullen, Chapter President of Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping By Sergeant Pete Nicholson Nelson Mullen is a founding member of the William C. Hall VC Chapter of the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping {CAVUNP} www.cavunp.org. This is a National organization formed in 1986 in Toronto and has more than a 1,000 members Canada wide. Consisting of all three elements of the Canadian Forces, Army, Navy and Air Force; all members must have done at least one United Nations (UN) peacekeeping tour! He recently received a Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation for his commitment and dedication to veterans. Nelson was very surprised and deeply honoured that he received this Commendation. From Weymouth, Nova Scotia originally, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1959 as Radio Operator and his career spanned twenty five years! He retired in Debert Nova Scotia, and then moved to Greenwood to become the Greenwood Detachment Commander and the Annapolis Valley Area supervisor for the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires and served with them for fifteen years. I n 1 9 8 8 t h e C AV U N P Greenwood chapter was founded. Since then, Nelson has held every position, secretary, treasurer and now President for the past four years and it looks like it may be more. It is an organization providing a social atmosphere for UN tour personnel, to share in the benefit of talking and listening. Meetings are held monthly at the Royal Canadian Air Force Association (RCAFA) Wing in Greenwood, and there is a TGIF (thank God it is Friday) on the first Friday of every month. With a maximum of eighty members at its peak, it now has thirty two. A very small chapter, but it has members all across Canada! For the first time, the National meeting is going to be held this year in Greenwood, 24-26 September 2010! The first time it has been east of Quebec City. Other events that are attended are the July 1st parade, Steer BBQ, August 9 National UN Peacekeeping (the day nine UN soldiers were killed in plane crash in 1974 in Syria!) and November 11th parade in Kingston. Nelson and his wife Isabelle have a son Steve, who is a Lieutenant Commander at Canada Command in Ottawa and a daughter Patty, a dietician, who is married and resides in Hawaii. To relax, he plays his version of golf in the summer and bowls in the winter. Nelson has helped build a tremendous venue of recognition and public awareness and like all Veterans should not be forgotten! (Image: Cpl Melissa Spence) By: Officer Cadet Patrick Dornan On Wednesday, August 4, 2010, the 14 Wing Logistics & Engineering Branch (WLE) held a Change of Command parade at 11 Hangar. Outgoing 14 Wing Logistics and Engineering Officer (WLEO) Lieutenant Colonel (LCol) Ron Ubbens thanked the Branch for their dedicated service and professionalism over the past two years. The official handover of the Unit to the new incoming WLEO, LCol Ghislain Létourneau took place with an official signing of documents between the two LCols and the Wing Commander, Colonel (Col) Bill Seymour. LCol Létourneau then shook hands and congratulated outgoing Commanding Officer (CO), LCol Ubbens on a job well done over a tough two years which saw the deployment of many WLE personnel as part of the14 Mission Support Squadron as well as issues with water shortages across the Wing. Hundreds attended the parade at the Hangar including special guests such as Major General Ian Patrick (retired) and former 14 Wing Commander Colonel Brian Handley (retired) as well as the families of both the incoming and outgoing COs. This past year had been one of the most demanding years for the Branch as more than 100 WLE personnel from all sections were deployed overseas. Base functions saw very little slow down, even with the reduced numbers of available personnel, a testament, noted Col Seymour, to the superb leadership of LCol Ubbens and the dedication of the personnel of the WLE Branch in Greenwood. Col Seymour then went on to commend LCol Ubbens for his outstanding service, and offered words of welcome to the new WLEO, LCol Létourneau Prior to his new posting to the Wing, LCol Létourneau was posted to the Canadian Forces Staff College in Toronto, Ontario. LCol Ubbens has been posted to an overseas assignment. In a short speech, LCol Létourneau also offered his compliments to LCol Ubbens for his leadership and hard work during his time as the Wings WLEO and added that he looks forward to the continued success of the WLE Branch under his command. The excellent teamwork that was demonstrated by all personnel was certainly noticed and recognized by LCol Cummings. The significance of this motto to LCol Cummings was clearly seen when he was presented with his parting gift of a print with 14 Wing insignia of the unit and the Wing motto. The only words he had upon receiving the print were “It’s perfect!” Prior to his new posting to the Wing, LCol Chouinard completed Staff College at Paris, France. Annapolis Valley Health Teddy Bear Picnic (Image: Private Jessica Reynolds) Submitted by: Wendy Walters, BPR, CIM, Acting Director - Public Relations Annapolis Valley Health will be hosting a Teddy Bear Picnic on Saturday September 11, from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Centennial Park in Berwick. Children from the community are invited to bring a Teddy Bear or other stuffed animal to a picnic where our local health care team and partners are on scene to provide a full teddy bear health check up. This event helps children become more comfortable with local emergency service providers (RCMP, EHS, Fire Department, Health Care Team, Canadian Forces) by interacting with them vicariously through teddy bears. Children will watch as their teddy bears have their Vital Signs done, get weighed and measured, have an X-ray, get examined, get a “needle”, a cast and a Band-Aid, etc. AVH is taking interest from local media who may want to set up on scene for a live broadcast or to sponsor this important community event. Remember….Safety remains top priority Natural Resources The Aurora Newspaper, 14 Wing Greenwood, NS Page 15 August 16, 2010 ZX Cycle N Run Cabot Trail Ride Submitted by: MCpl Mike Dymond 31 Jul – 2 Aug 2010 Eight members (MWO. Andre Daigle, Mr Dean Peach, Mr Steve Moores, MCpl Mike Dymond, Cpl Yvette Cedeno, Mr Ian Giles, Mrs Annette Dymond, Lt (USN) Greg Becker) of the ZX Cycle N Run Club participated in a three day ride around the beautiful and challenging 300 km Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island. Day one’s leg (the easy day) departed Baddeck and rode over Hunter Mountain and west through the rolling Margaree Valley, then north to Cheticamp for a distance of 90 km. The duty of driving the support vehicle was shared by all, with handovers every 1015km. The group then set up camp at Roberts Brook campground in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Day two (the hard day 100km) departed the campsite and immediately went into the “Grades” that doubled as the warm-up for the ominous French Mountain. The beautiful and scenic grunt up the 6km (elev. 455m) climb was “Breath Taking”. Kudos Andre, Annette and Yvette! Riders then regrouped at the top of McKenzie Mountain, and were stopped by a park Warden asking if we had seen any Coyotes. Three coyotes had been spotted earlier that morning, which was unusual, and he informed us you normally only hear them ``Crunching on Bones`` near the roadside. All sixteen legs and arms were accounted for. The harrowing descent down the multiple switchbacks of McKenzie Mountain had a surprise for Dean, as he hit a bird (claims the bird hit him), causing his stereo speaker to depart his bicycle. Next was a quick lunch at Pleasant Bay and on to the dreaded North Mountain (elev. 433m). This 4km climb, with the first 3km at 11% was brutal. But all riders were eventually successful in ascending. Andre discovered that when he could not maintain forward momentum, and his pedals could not rotate, the bike will fall on its side if your foot is not on the ground first. He had a short rest, unclipped his shoes, climbed back on, and conquered the Mountain. Kudos Andre! The harrowing descent down the other side had mixed reviews as ``Little Greg`` shredded the hill and rocketed down to the rest stop at Big Intervale. Mike lost his nerve, climbing the mountain faster than he descended it. The group split as Greg and Steve took the Neils Harbour coastal route while Ian took the remainder over South Mountain, eventually enjoying an 8km 6% downhill. The riders regrouped shortly before the day’s destination at the Broad Cove Campground near Ingonish. Day three (the not so easy day 113km) we were pointed south towards Cape Smokey. After a 15 km warm-up through multiple construction zones and beautiful scenery through Ingonish Beach we started up the supposed 15km climb to the summit. Our group weatherman/tour guide Ian had a great surprise for us as it was “Only” an 8km climb. Some of us had a bailout plan, and fortunately didn’t have to use it. After a couple of kickers near the bottom, the climb was fairly gradual, and Yvette was seen occasionally adjusting her hair (blamed her helmet). The descent down Smokey again had mixed reviews, but the road eventually wound along the shore and settled to some undulating hills. We More Firsts in Flight Submitted by: Heather Gardner For the past 3 months I’ve been living with nesting Sharp Shinned Hawks (SSH) in my yard. They would wake me at dawn with their shrill cry that seemed to go on all day. Tonight, July 23rd 2010, there was a payoff. While out for a bike ride we got to see about 20 juvenile SSH out for what appeared to be their first flight! Quite a fantastic sight here in Ravenwood Subdivision. The Valley has so much to offer, even just outside your front door! The Air Quality Health Index is a scale from 1 to 10+ that relates outdoor air quality to health risk. All arrived with a great sense of accomplishment at the finish at the Bra`s D`or Lake Campground. Andre, Annette and Yvette are new road riders this year. Their riding accomplishments are impressive and this weekend they rode the following personal bests: Andre Daigle – 100km Ride Annette Dymond – 90km Ride Yvette Cedeno – 100km Ride ONLINE EDUCATION AT ITS TOP 10 Military Friendly University by BEST Your success is our mission. Three Weeks of Fun, Sports Camp Style! Submitted By: Carly Gillis Week 4 at the 14 Wing sports camp was all about Canada’s favourite sports, hockey and lacrosse! The week was filled with hockey and lacrosse drills, scrimmages, and tournaments. Big thanks goes out to the Nova Scotia Lacrosse Society who put on a lacrosse camp for the kids, to the Halifax Discovery Centre who allowed us to visit, and to our bus drivers who made this trip possible. After the long weekend, it was Week 5 at camp and the greatly anticipated “ A d v e n t u r e We e k ” h a d arrived. During this week we went on a rewarding scavenger hunt, and also had the chance to perform Yoga, and even Aikido. Thursday night was also “Sleepover Night” and the kids had tonnes of fun playing flashlight tag, watching movies, and enjoyed a healthy supper thanks to the donations from the Greenwood Subway. Thanks again to Aprill Denney who gave us a lesson in yoga, Steve Nickerson who taught us the skills of Aikido, and the Greenwood MacDonald’s who provided us with prizes in our scavenger hunt. This past week was Week 6 which was filled with net and racquet games. The kids got to enjoy fun games like volleyball, badminton, ping pong, tennis, and even squash thanks to the F&S Centre who allowed us to use their squash courts. Other thanks go out to our bus drivers who took us to Pirates Cove on Friday and to the staff of Pirates Cove who allowed us to visit. Also, we would like to thank the lifeguards of the Greenwood outdoor pool who allow us to swim safely everyday. See you next week Remi Zinck and Tyler Badcock try their new Aikido skills for the “Extreme Survivor Challenge!” as instructed by Steve Nickerson during Adventure Week. By: Captain Scott Spurr Residents of the town of Bridgetown were treated to a concert by 14 Wing Greenwood’s Band on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at the town’s Jubilee Park. The hour long concert started at 7:00 p.m. and featured several musical arrangements that included contemporary and modern numbers. The band was directed by acting band director Maggie Helmes from Kentville. It was also the last concert that outgoing band director Master Warrant Officer Lisa Paquette had the opportunity to play and conduct with the 14 Wing. MWO Paquette is currently It is past the middle of August and it seems like ages since I wrote a 19th Hole article. The Ladies news: August 4th several ladies from our club were at Paragon for the Texas Scramble: Sandra Cathcart came home with the closest to the Sub Box prize and Wendy and Connie Armstrong won 2nd L.G. in the 3rd Division... what a day that was... it rained so hard but the organizers didn’t want to give in to Mother Nature, so after an hour delay we finally got to play...a bit wet for the first couple of holes but we were all dry by the time the round ended. Hats off to the organizers....it really was a fun day. On August 11th there were 13 ladies out for Ladies Night and they played Bingo Bango Bongo and the winners were Faye Penny, Paullette Swindells,Deborah Melanson, Cyndi Landry and Hazel McEwan. The 50/50 was won by Sandra Cathcart. The team from our club that will be going to the Bronze competition at Oakfield will be Audrey Costin, Wendy The 19th Hole Richardson, Sandy Adams, Betty Lane and Carolyn Litsas ...good luck ladies. Steve Greenwood did an excellent job of organizing the 2nd Annual Leafs vs Habs grudge match-play challenge. After last year’s very close loss to those Leafs, the Habs team expected a better result this year. The Challenge was tied at 10-10 with the last 2 matches coming up the 18th. Unfortunately (that depends on who you are cheering for) ...the Leafs took both matches and finished with a 12-10 victory. It was a tough defeat for the Habs for the second year, but they can always say that the Leafs had an extra month to practice after the hockey season. For several of the players it was their first experience of match-play and they all enjoyed the experience. It was nice to see more ladies participate this year. Results for the Leafs were: Cooper over Dan Smith, Gorman over Stoddard, Jenkins over Keilback, Donna Hill over B. Saltzman, Sheila Johnson over Sandra Cathcart., Youden over Bill McDonald, Rideout over Ian MacKenzie, Business of the Week is Back! Rick said it was around $9.00 over 2 days... well worth the trip from Edmonton. Congratulations to Mike Newman who scored a Hole in One on July 17th. He aced the 8th hole with a 7 iron (playing partners Steve Newman, Mike Newman and Keith Abriel) The Club Championship is scheduled for Aug 21/22 ...sign up sheets are in the Ladies Locker Room and for the Men... it is on the Bulletin Board in the Hallway. Volunteers Needed By Eric MacKenzie Community Recreation Coordinator The 30th Annual Terry Fox Run (Site # 1060) is set to once again happen on Sunday September 19th 2010, as part of our annual Wing Welcome weekend. Registration will take place at the 14 Wing Community Centre at 12:00 p.m. where a warm up will be offered at 12:45 p.m. prior to the official start at 1:00 p.m. Individuals can either participate by walking, running or biking the 10KM route planned. However, please note that helmets are mandatory and you will not be permitted to bike the route if you do not have a helmet. If you do not have a helmet you can still walk or run the route if you wish. Also, please be aware that participants under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Finally, it is important to note that both the 5km and 10km routes will be the same as last year; the run will start at the Community Centre and then proceed down Kingswood Rd, through the flower streets, through the PMQ gate, around the Wing and then back to the Community Centre through the main gate. Speaking of the run, the Terry Fox 100KM CHALLANGE has once again been set. Are you ready for it? This challenge is for anyone who would like to run, walk or bike 10KM a day, for ten straight days, starting on Friday September 10th. The goal is to complete your final 10KM during the 30th Annual Terry Fox Run event on Sunday September 19th If you are interested in signing up or learning more about this challenge, please contact Eric MacKenzie at the 14 Wing Community Centre at 765 – 1494 ext. 5337. This is the third year that the Village of Kingston has partnered with14 Wing and with this great partnership, we expect this event to be even larger and more successful than ever. It is also our goal that this partnership will increase the amount of donations that we are able to collect in support of the Terry Fox Foundation! However, as a result of this event growing, the demand and need for volunteers has also grown. This event is just over a month away but we would like to remind everyone that the success of this annual community fundraiser requires a great deal of community assistance and support. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Eric MacKenzie at 765-1494 ext. 5337. Lastly, please keep an eye out for pledge sheets and Terry Fox Run posters in the community. 14 Wing Greenwood Skateboard Union Club! The 14 Wing Community Centre held our second Greenwood Skateboard Union Club meeting on Tuesday July 20th. Our Club is now officially formed, and we have started to make decisions on how to spend the grant we received on the park, and pick a day to raise funds through a community bottle drive. This Club is opened to anyone between the ages of 9-18 but anyone under 9 can join the club, provided a parent or guardian (18 or older) is present when they visit the skate park. This includes our BMX users and skateboard users. Our membership is only $15 a year, $12 for each additional child, and all of your registration dues go towards fundraising purposes to provide upgrades to the park. Membership forms are available at Limitless Skate and Snow, in the Greenwood Mall, and at the 14 Wing Community Centre. Please note that your completed form must be submitted at the Community Centre where you will be given a receipt for your payment. We hope to continue to meet monthly, and discuss what upgrades the park needs and how to fundraise the necessary funds. This Club, in partnership with Limitless Skate and Snow, allows users of the park to provide feedback on where our grant funding should be spent, and collectively set a plan in place for what direction we would like to see our park go. Other benefits will include discounts on entry fees to our event, such as the upcoming Wing Welcome competition set for Saturday September 1 8 th 2 0 1 0 . P l u s , w e a r e already trying to organize skateboarding lessons for those who would like to learn how to skate. In addition, by forming this Club, we will improve our chances to be approved for additional grants and also improve the success of our fundraising initiatives, since we will have a group of committed members who are dedicated to helping improve our park. If you are interested in joining the Club, please contact Eric MacKenzie at 765-1494 ext 5337 or attend our next meeting set for Wednesday August 18th from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. inside the 14 Wing Community Centre Conference Room. During this meeting we’ll discuss plans of holding a bottle drive at the end of August / early September, and this will be an opportunity to voice your opinions and recommend the changes that you would like to see. Please note that the Community Centre Conference Room is located on the second floor of the Centre. Welcome to Greenwood! Submitted by: Michelle Thibodeau Wagner, Coordinator of Special Events and Promotions, Greenwood Military Family Resource Centre 765-1491 local 1421 [email protected] The Greenwood Military Family Resource Centre (GMFRC) would like to extend a heartfelt welcome to everyone posted to Greenwood this posting season. Greenwood is a wonderful place to be, the people are friendly, the community is supportive, and the landscape is fabulous. What is there to do in Greenwood? This posting will give you the chance to enjoy some of the wonderful things the Annapolis Valley and Nova Scotia have to offer. Take a hike to Crystal Falls; watch the sun set in Margaretville; check out a local u-pick for the freshest fruit and veggies available; or attend a local festival, play or concert. July and August are great times to find a local beach or lake. September is a great time to go whale watching and apple picking. October brings the chance to go to a farm and pick your own pumpkins for Halloween! Looking to get involved? In the Greenwood/Kingston area there are many things to do or get involved with, depending on your interests. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and learn about your new area or to add new skills to your resume. The GMFRC has many volunteering opportunities from tutoring to childcare, packaging parcels to promotion and everything in between! For all those looking to get involved in their new community there are many organizations that are looking for volunteers, coaches, or members and would love your help. Looking for causal childcare? Forecasted for September, the GMFRC will be offering full day casual child care to military families at a minimal cost. It’s nice knowing your children are looked after in a state of the art, safe, licensed, and stimulating environment. Casual childcare is a great service to take advantage of for an afternoon just for you. The GMFRC Open House that was scheduled for August 27th has been cancelled this year to allow the staff to focus on the new child care project. Even though there will not be a formal Open House this year, the GMFRC “house” is always open for you, please feel free to drop in anytime. Got questions about your new community? In September, the GMFRC offers a wonderful program to initiate you into your new community. Greenwood 101 is a guided bus tour of our local area. Bilingual tour guides will fill you in on the area and answer any questions you may have. The tour is followed by a family BBQ to allow you to meet GMFRC staff, as well as, other families new to the area. Greenwood 101 takes place on September 16th, contact the GMFRC for further details and to book your spot on the bus. Childcare, during the bus trip, is offered free to all who attend. Looking for information? The GMFRC has information that you may need to get settled in a new community. Information such as daycare and babysitter lists; doctor and dentist lists are available to you if you should need them. The doors of the GMFRC are always open for questions and information; please feel free to drop by. Access to a fax machine, internet, and photocopier services are also available should you require it. The GMFRC offers many programs, events, and service for adults, volunteers and children; a little something for everyone. The Aurora Newspaper, 14 Wing Greenwood, NS Page 21 August 16, 2010 What’s Up in Day Camp Day Campers thinking hard about what they want to be when they grow up! WOW the past three weeks of Day Camp have just been a blast! Looking back at week four, we were mad scientists doing all kinds of crazy experiments! Monday, we started off by constructing the tallest free standing structure, using limited supplies. Tuesday, we made a cradle for an egg out of straws, tape and newspaper, and then dropped it off the top of the stairs outside. Our campers sure know how to make some strong cradles because during the first drop, none of the eggs broke! Wednesday, we made some homemade volcanoes! Thursday the campers took a trip to Halifax to see the new Toy Story 3 movie in 3D. To finish off the week, the day campers made some of their own silly putty that they were able to take home! Before we knew it, it was week five and we were diving into some wild adventures! Monday we had no camp… bummer… but we sure made up for it Tuesday with our trip over to the Sudoku Birchall Centre to watch Madagascar 3! On Wednesday we made scavenger hunt posters and painted rocks with all kinds of wild designs! Thursday was another big day because we explored outer space with our scavenger hunt using our completed our posters we had made the day before. In the afternoon we tie dyed T-shirts which turned out groovy! Friday, our campers were a little upset that the rain washed out our trail at the Duck Pond, meaning we couldn’t go on our hike. To make up for it French Camp and Day Camp got together that afternoon for a trip to the park and made some homemade sundaes that were delicious! Week six was jam packed with guest visitors! On Monday, the Search and Rescue (SAR) Techs came over to the Apple Bowl and we all got to watch them to do a parachute drop. After snack we had the 14 Wing Fire Fighters come over with Sparky the Dog and gave us some great tips on what to do if a fire ever happens! Wednesday, we explored the Discovery Centre to find out some cool things scientists might do! Thursday we had two more guests come in, our first being Wesley Norris who showed us some sick tricks on his skateboard while giving the kids some safety tips about extreme sports such as this! Our second guest was Aprill Denney who came in to give our campers a pretty sweet yoga lesson! Friday we had Clp Ferris come over from the Military Police to talk to us about her job and what she does on a day to day basis! After snack we had Stacey Hanninen come in and talk about her job as a dietician. She had tons of cool facts and key hints on ho to stay healthy for the campers! Day Camp would like to send out a huge thanks to all of our volunteers and bus drivers for these past few weeks. Without you guys it just wouldn’t have been the same! Thanks again! KGSC Soccer Tournament Submitted by: Craig Sawler On July 16th-18th, the Kingston/Greenwood Soccer Club hosted the annual Amanda Forster Memorial Soccer Tournament. Amanda was a treasured member of the Club, who tragically passed away in 2006 at the age of 14 years. Each year, teams from across Nova Scotia join the Kingston/ Greenwood Soccer Club to honour Amanda’s memory by participating in a soccer filled weekend. This year, 46 teams braved the heat to compete in 85 matches in age divisions ranging from 6 to 16 years.
