Coin Sales and Introduction • February 26-28, 2009
In the past few months, there is one special
event that has been written about extensively and
that is the Centennial of Flight initiative, which
commemorates 100 years of powered flight in
Canada. At 14 Wing Greenwood, the annual Winter
Carnival is also warmly welcomed, so it is fitting
that this year the Winter Carnival will have a
Centennial of Flight theme. This way, the Wing
can pay tribute to the vintage Royal Canadian Air
Force aircraft that have flown within Canada over
the past 100 years.
Instead of breaking down the friendly
competition in terms of Squadrons or Branches,
the 2009 Winter Carnival will be a little different.
There are four teams with the first being the
Spitfires; they will be represented by the Civilians
of the Wing and their era will be the 1940s. The
second team is the Golden Hawks; they will be
represented by the Junior Ranks and their era will
be the 1950s. The third team is the Arguses; they
will be represented by the Senior NonCommissioned Members and their era will be the

1970s. Lastly, there are the Officers; their team name
is the Lancasters and their era will be the 1960s.
Each Team will be identified by a coloured scarf:
Spitfires will be sky blue, forest green for the
Golden Hawks, fire truck red for the Arguses and
navy blue for the Lancasters.
By purchasing your Commemorative Centennial
of Flight coin for only $10.00, you will have access

DND Mentoring Program
The LCC is delighted to inform you that the DND
Mentoring Program has been
launched. This is a leadership
competency development initiative sponsored by ADMHR Civ.
Mentoring is a universally
accepted approach to professional development. It is defined as a professional relationship in which an experienced person (the mentor)
voluntarily shares knowledge and insights with a less
experienced person (the
mentee) who wishes to benefit from that exchange. Mentors meet with their mentees
usually on a monthly basis
for an hour. The relationship
lasts 12 to 18 months based
on the agreed upon learning
objectives. It is important to
note that the decision to be
part of a mentoring relationship is considered a learning
activity and should be included in the personal learning plan.
Participants of mentoring
programs report positive
gains and significant returns
on their investment in developing a mentor-mentee relationship. It has been de-
scribed as an energizing,
stimulating experience from
both perspectives: the employee who benefits from wise
counsel as they advance their
career plans and the manager
who shares their strategies
and breadth of knowledge.
As part of our commitment
to strengthen and renew our
workforce at DND, we encourage indeterminate civilian employees and civilian and military managers to actively participate in this program. We
are counting on civilian and
military managers to support
civilians in their organizations
to register as mentees.
A solid pool of civilian and
military mentors, who bring a
broad range of work experiences, is essential to the successful implementation of this
program. If you are a civilian
or military manager and you
are in one of the following
occupational categories, consider registering as a mentor
by visiting this website: http:/

Kandahar + half-marathon = perfect start to 2009
Captain Krzysztof Stachura
- 3rd Battalion, The Royal
Canadian Regiment Battle
Group
Kandahar
Airfield,
Afghanistan — Fighter jets,
armoured vehicles and armed
soldiers do not normally figure
in the background of a
competitive event — but, then
again, Afghanistan is hardly a
normal place to hold one.
The morning chill of New
Year’s Day found 135 soldiers
from a multitude of nations
eagerly waiting for the race to
start. It was no New York
Marathon, but the competitive
spirit was keen. The course was
the appropriate distance and
presented a significant
challenge despite being flat. An
altitude of 3,300 feet will do that.
“The idea behind organizing
the event came as a result of a
conversation with a friend while
going out for a morning run,”
said race organizer Captain Paul
Williams (time: one hour, 51
minutes, 43 seconds) of F
Battery, a component of the 3rd
Battalion, The Royal Canadian
Regiment Battle Group.
Trooper Caine Warburton of
Australia was the overall
winner with an impressive time
of one hour, 19 minutes and 12
seconds.
“To be honest, I was very
surprised with the attendance,”
said Capt Williams. “This is a
busy place. The race was
organized early in the morning
so that everyone could get
back to work.”
Being physically fit, and
maintaining a high level of
physical fitness even during
deployments, is more than
important; it is every soldier’s
responsibility. At work for 12 to
18 hours a day, seven days a
week, soldiers deployed in
Kandahar still find time to work
out at the gym and jog.
“We had a good group of
people show up for the race.
Some were here aiming for a
personal best and others were
here for the feeling of
accomplishment. Despite some
sore muscles, I think everyone
had a good time,” added Capt
Williams when it was all over.

Public Skate
Come One Come All
Greenwood Gardens Public Skating takes place
Saturday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday
mornings from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The skate is
free for Military and valid Rec Card holders. There is a
drop-in fee of $4.00 for those without Rec Cards.
Although helmets are not mandatory they are strongly
suggested. Come out and enjoy a great winter tradition.
Woodpecker is still here...he
just had a bit of a fight with a
starling...he won! I saw 6, male,
Ring-necked Pheasants on the
side of highway 101 yesterday
near exit 15. They are there
most afternoons, I have seen
as many as 12 at a time there!
Recently, Wayne Neily helped
me identify a female, Redwinged Blackbird that was
feeding in my yard...she’s a
stranger around here.”
In Spa Springs, Barbara and
I, saw 2 Rough-legged Hawks,
2 Red-tailed Hawks, 80+
Horned Larks, 400+ A. Crows,
2 C. Ravens, 200+ E. Starlings,
1 Song Sparrow, 11 DE
Juncos, 1 male, and 3 female,
Ring-necked Pheasants. At
one point a Rough-legged
Hawk perched on top of a
fence post, spotted a small
rodent on the snow covered
field, captured it, and pressed
on!
Andre Elieff wrote: “We
have had one or more grey
squirrels passing through for
at least four or five years. I
say passing through because
they seem to patrol the
neighbourhood. They were at
first infrequent visitors as
they made their rounds alone.
For a while earlier this past
summer we had a pair
traveling together, it looked
like an adult and a juvenile.
About two years ago, one lost
most of his tail (“Stumpy”)
and he must have settled in
not too far away because he
has become a frequent visitor
to the deck feeder this winter.
He makes it easy to know
whether a different grey is
about but we don’t know how
many others there actually are.
Stumpy has decided it’s his
feeder, as he gave great chase
around the deck this morning
eventually driving an intruder
grey out around to front of the
house and out of the yard.
Thank you Andre. Grey/Black
Squirrels are the same species

Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor:
In the summer of 1940 we
were a little southeast of
London in a village called
Woldingham. Most civilians
had evacuated this village as
it was not far from two R.A.F.
fighter bases Biggin Hill and
Caterham, and Nazi bombing
was expected.
I was with Battalion H.Q. at
this time and if the Germans
started to drop paratroops on
those fighter bases the West
Novas would have had their
hands full but it never came
to that.
I was in one of the houses
that had been taken over by
the War Department, a big

two storey building and every
room was occupied.
One night two bombs
exploded not far away and
then another one quite close
so the concussion opened
some doors, and several
windows where we were on
the floor but no one was hurt.
There were several bombs
dropped in our area and a few
minor causalities, but we were
lucky.
The War Department was
sure that fighter bases would
be first attacked by paratroops
if an invasion came but Hitler
changed his mind and
attacked Russia.
The Battle of Britain was
now on and we often used
binoculars to watch what
happened at these fighter
bases. Sometimes Spitfires
would come in for a landing and
you could tell that the pilot
had been wounded or the
fighter was partially disabled.
It was a busy time for the
ground crews. When a fighter
landed there was so much
activity, ammunition and fuel,
the pilot hardly had time for a
cup of tea.
Once we were moved down
near Dover on the Channel
coast, as it was thought that
the Nazi might invade there
but it never happened. Every
morning at exactly seven
o’clock those big guns started
to fire at the French coast, and
shells exploded in Dover.
For a while we were near
Brighton, there were white
sandy beaches for miles, a
perfect place for an invasion
but it never happened.
While the West Novas
were in England there was no
combat but that came later
when we hit Italy, also on the
Western Front.

It is probably not difficult to tell that we dug deep into the HQ archives to find this

Thinking of volunteering in
a local community or
organization? We often
overlook the benefits of
volunteering and what it can
do to boost our personal and
career development. A person
is not an island and cannot
ensure the prosperity of a
community alone. Community
members need to be codependant on each other and
support each other in order to
see growth and survival, and
is a great way for its members
to become an integral part their
community’s’ prosperous
future. Many organizations

welcome volunteers and
consider their volunteers to be
a strong backbone in their
success. Volunteer work can
be added to your résumé to
beef up your skills, show your
dedication and hard work ethic
and can allow you to explore
different fields if you are
looking for a change in your
employment goals. Whether
you are volunteering to
develop yourself on a personal
level or to boost skills for a job
prospect, make volunteering
part of your life and help ensure
the growth and success of
your community.

idea that a healthy
community is a happy
community, and a happy
community is a supportive
community for our troops.
14 Wing will once again
be kicking off the big New
Year with a day of
snowshoe bliss on Friday
January 30 th at the 14
Wing Greenwood Golf
Course. We will be
holding two separate
events, the first from
11:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m. to
challenge all Military
members, NPF and DND
employees only, to get
active during their lunch
breaks. The second event
is from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and
is for all families to
attend.
The 14 Wing Community
Centre is pleased to be
partnering with the
GMFRC, for this event,
who will provide sleigh
rides and hot drinks for all
families during the 3:30 –
5:30 p.m. time slot. These
sleigh rides will depart
from the 14 Wing Golf
course and allow the
opportunity for all
families to enjoy a sleigh
ride before, after or while
waiting for your chance to
hit the links in snowshoes!
So come out and “take
the roof off winter” with
the whole family—we
have snowshoes to fit any
size foot, big or small; or,
if you would rather, leave
the kids at our Kid Zone
for both indoor and
outdoor fun while mom
and dad take a relaxing
snowshoe through the
woods. There will be
complementary hot drinks
and sweet treats to warm
the soul. In addition,
there will be prizes to be
won along the course and
there will also be prizes
awarded to the first who
sign up. So make sure you
register and mark the
second 14 Wing Red
Family Snowshoe Day on
your calendars! More
information will be
available in the coming
weeks but to learn more or
to register, please call 7651494 ext. 5331, 5337, 5431
or 765-8165.

2009 14 Wing Junior Curling Program
The 2009 14 Wing Junior Curling program is well
underway but there is still time to join us for the second
half of the season. Our program is designed for anyone
between the ages of 11 and 18 and all skill levels. The 14
Wing Junior Curling program is FREE! This great form of
physical activity, for you and your friends, takes place every
Tuesday afternoon at 4:30pm. However, when school is
cancelled our practices are too.
The 14 Wing Junior Curlers have been busy developing
their skills which they have learned to transfer and apply
during a game. Many exciting things are planned for the
remainder of the season, especially a Junior Curling
bonspiel, which will be held in Middleton on Saturday
February 7 th. This fun spiel, with neighbouring Junior
Curling programs, will be free to enter and 14 Wing plans
on entering 2 teams!
Every Tuesday, brooms are provided along with sliders
for the youth to experiment with. All that is required is an
interest in the game and a willingness to learn more and
meet new friends. Please note, if you feel that your youth
may be more comfortable on the ice with either a bicycle or
hockey helmet, then we strongly encourage the use of one.
We would like to mention that it is mandatory for all
juniors to wear proper indoor footwear (carry with you when
you arrive) so please come prepared. We also encourage
all participants to wear warm and comfortable clothing
(jogging pants, gloves, etc).
Curling is a very fun, and inexpensive way to stay active
during the winter and an excellent way to meet new friends!
If you’re interested in curling or learning more about our
weekly program, please call Eric MacKenzie at 765 – 1494
ext. 5337 or come out and join us on a Tuesday afternoon.

be offering evening appointments on Mondays and Tuesdays from
3:00 to 9:00 p.m. These new appointment times will ensure that
clients are able to access PSI services with minimal impact on

Feb. 2 - First day of
Semester 2
Principal’s Report: I am
approaching my one year
anniversary at West Kings
and cannot believe how
quickly the past year has
come and gone. The learning
curve has been steep in many
ways and I know that will
continue. But, I have to admit
that in every challenge lies
tremendous opportunity. The
level of commitment and
dedication this staff has in
ensuring the success of
students is incredible and I
feel very fortunate to be
learning from their experience
and knowledge and getting
the chance to share my own
as we tackle the task of
preparing students for the
future.
I wanted to thank Heather
Davis, our school’s band and
music students, as well as the
Band Parent’s Association for
their work in preparing for and
presenting their concert just
prior to our Christmas break.
It takes a lot of time and energy
under normal circumstances
top prepare for a concert. The
challenges multiply when you
have to deal with Nova Scotia
weather. So, thank you again
and thank you everyone that
came out to see our students
perform.
Our exam schedule has
been released to students.
Unlike previous years, exams
are scheduled in both the
morning and afternoon since
we have to build a schedule
around three grade 12
provincial exams in English,
Chemistry, and Math.
Students who only write in the
morning are permitted to
leave, but buses will NOT be
running until their regular time
at 2:10. Students with conflicts
are asked to notify teachers
and make arrangements to
write one of them at another
time. Priority will always be
given to provincial exams.
Friday, January 30 is a marking
day so students are not
expected to be in school.
Monday, February 2 will be
the first day of second
semester.

Student Council Report:
January is a low-key month
as everyone is working to do
well on their exams. We would
like to wish everyone the best
of luck! In February there are
plenty of opportunities for
Page 19
January 19, 2009
students to get involved!
February 4th is an eventful
day for West Kings! Students’
Council is opening the muchanticipated entertainment
room in our school, furnished
with a pool table, air hockey
tables, a foosball table and
many other activities for
students to participate in over
lunch hours. Thank you to all
those who supported our
endeavour; a list is published
on our Students’ Council
website.
Another round of the
Wolverine Challenges will
also be starting up in February
connected with events such
as Mission Impossible, IFlirtz, our March dance and
Spirit activities. Homeroom
teams will compete to see who
can earn the most points and,
of course, who can beat the
winners of last term’s
challenges the Jeffrey’s
Juggernauts.
Mission Impossible is a
school-wide activity. People
sign up and they will compete
to see who can catch the most
people without being caught!
I-Flirtz is a computer-based
matchmaker that matches
students up with potential
best friends or romances and
gives other neat information.
Both of these are being done
by and in support of TADD
Safe Grad.
Spirit is planning to
celebrate Summer
in
February! It’s cold and we
need something to take away
the winter chills. This will be
done the first week back from
exams.
Everyone
is
encouraged to purchase a
Yearbook as well for $40.00.

and Daddy’s plan to have a birthday party for us. It is
going to be at the 14 Wing Annapolis Mess on 24
January from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. It is going to be so
much fun. Ben and Alex are hoping for cake while
we girls, Julia and Morah, are just going to get
dressed like princesses and look beautiful.
We are still sensitive to strong smells so we ask
you to come scent free. Santa Claus was very good
to us this year so presents are not necessary. We
would like to just thank everyone who has helped
Mommy and Daddy through the very tough first year
for us. Drive safe and see you then.
Julia, Morah, Alex and Ben.
a $500 CANEX gift certificate.
As always, all are invited to
come out and participate in
