INTRODUCTION Finnerty are a Civil & Structural Engineering Company based 8 miles from Athenry, employing 150 staff, operating predominantly in the North Western Region of Ireland. The company was formed in 1973 by Michael Finnerty who operates the business with his sons Shane & Cathal Finnerty. The N6 Galway to East Ballinasloe Drainage project included the construction of 60Km of new surface water sewer systems, pipes ranging in diameter from 100mm to 600mm. 60Km of new service utility ducting, 2000m of vertical drainage, construction 92 number drainage culverts, mammal underpasses and headwalls and the realignment and removal of unacceptable material from rivers. Finnerty Plant Hire carried out extensive Bund construction on the N6 Motorway at the Toll Plaza. This project was the most demanding in construction terms. The bund was constructed on bog land with the added difficulty of the location being a Quarry during road construction and filled with peat material. The bund construction was 600m long ranging in height from 2.5m up to 8m. DIFFICULTIES
x The bund construction was carried out when the motorway was open to the public x The ground conditions were extremely poor (bog) and works carried out during winter season. x There Steep inclines where the bund was constructed and at a time of adverse weather conditions. x Ingress of water from adjoining bog lands x The weight if the C2 material had a tendency to creep down the steep incline towards the motorway APPROACH
N6 TOLL PLAZA Finnerty Plant Hire carried out extensive Bund construction on the N6 and
the most demanding in construction terms was the extensive bund at the toll
plaza which consisted of constructing 500m of bund ranging in height from
2.5m up to 8m when the motorway was opened, the duration was 12 weeks.
x Firstly we constructed haul roads using wide pad excavators and track
dump trucks together with wide track bulldozers where we could use
them
x Terraim was used to stabilise the temporary roads
x The imported material was imported to a hard standing point where
the C2 material was loaded onto tracked dump trucks and brought to
the bund under construction
x The C2 material was then placed with long reach 55 feet excavators in
layers
x The full length of the bund was raised in sequence to monitor
movement and each situation that arose would be attended to with its
own solution.

PROJECT DURATION: Jan 2010 -­ April 2010 PROJECT VALUE: ¼ Finnerty Plant Hire acted as Sub-­contractor over the last decade to many industrial & commercial projects. It expanded it structural wing of the company to carry out both groundwork & substructure contracts as they usually interact in the construction stage & have the machines and quality workmanship to carry out both in the most efficient sequence during a project. Finnerty Plant Hire also constructed an all weather training area which was originally to be constructed of synthetic Astra turf surface but changed to a sand based grass finish with Wall Ball adjoining on one side.
