Enzymes and bacterial system. Anti-Stress and biological soil activators: as
an aid to improve soil condition, reduce soil erosion, increase water penetration, increase plant uptake of fertilizers and nutrients. Relieve moisture and
plant stress.
• PENA*TRON is an acid to activate and supply essential nutrients by
activating microorganism metabolism.
• PENA*TRON is an acid to accelerate seed germination and increase
plant population. Root penetration is deeper, developing a stronger tap root
and later feeder roots.
• PENA*TRON is an aid to help all types retain more water by breaking
the surface tension of the water and soil, allowing greater water penetration
per cubic foot, by retaining more moisture and allowing less water to be used
per irrigation.
• PENA*TRON will save water - one or two irrigations per crop season.
• PENA*TRON enzymes and bacterial system, as an aid to detoxify the
soils that have been damaged by over use of chemical can be detoxified.
Time, temperature and types of soils are also factors which affect the detoxification by breaking the surface tension of the soil, allowing moisture, water,
oxygen and energy to work together to balance the soil environment and
produce healthy and high yielding plants.

REDTEK®
Fix Your Own Air Conditioning
I
f your air conditioner has lost its
charge or if you’re looking for an
alternative to the new, more expensive freon replacements, you might
want to take a look at what’s available
from TCB Technologies, a Canadian research company.
Their Red Tek R12 refrigerant is an approved replacement for the old R12 and
R12 substitutes and an economical replacement for the new R134a. Red Tek
12a is an alkane refrigerant, as opposed
to CFC and HFC types that have been
blamed for ozone depletion.
Red Tek 12a is compatible with the orings, seals, hoses and oils in both R12
and R134a systems. Unlike R134a,
Red Tek 12a is non-toxic and non-corrosive.
And, since it has larger molecules than
the gases it replaces, it is easier to pump
through the system. “Because of this,
the air conditioner compressor will run
cooler. And it’s less likely to leak from
the air conditioning system as well,”
Gary Grenzke, a TCB researcher.
“Because the molecules are larger,
you also need less product to charge
the system,” adds Mel Brown, a Johnstown, Colorado distributor who markets Red Tek 12a in the U.S. “Six
Available in 6-oz. cans, Red Tek Refrigerant is an alternative to the new, more
expensive freon replacements.
ounces of Red Tek 12a has the same
cooling capacity as 18 oz. of R12 or 16
oz. of R134a.”
Red Tek 12a is available in 6 oz. cans,
which are the same size cans other re-
frigerants are sold in, and also a 12 lb.
cylinder, which is the equivalent of 36
lbs. of R134a. Cans sell for $7.95. Cylinders are $197.40.
As with any refrigerant you should
follow all local and federal regulations
in handling Red Tek. Brown has a tap
and hose adapter for installing Red Tek
12a, as well as the appropriate adaptor
fittings.
ProSeal
Another new product from Mel Brown
is ProSeal advanced seal treatment for
air conditioner systems.
ProSeal is a formulated system designed to seal leaks in both metal and
rubber parts of air conditioning and
refrigeration systems, improving their
efficiency. It’s chemically activated by
moisture at the leak site to form a permanent seal. Sells for $18.50 per can.
Leak Stop
O-ring and seal failure cause 80% of
refrigerant loss. Leakstop is a new product that makes seals pliable again, stopping most system leaks. One 4 oz can
treats any car, truck, tractor or combine.
Sells for $8.00 per can.

Pressurized Exhaust Kills
Burrowing Rodents
T
he H & M Gopher Control PERC system (Pressurized Exhaust Rodent Controller) uses carbon monoxide from pressurized engine exhaust to kill burrowing rodents such as gophers, ground squirrels, prairie
dogs, moles & voles.
According to the company, exhaust gas has long been one
of the most lethal and least expensive methods to kill burrowing rodents. But until now there hasn’t been an economical, efficient delivery system.
Company owners, Allen Hurlburt and Virginia Massey,
said that the PERC system involves a narrow steel wand
that is used to probe the burrow and inject pressurized exhaust that fills the burrow in two minutes with lethal con6 • Western Farm, Ranch and Dairy
Rocky Mountain/Heartland
www.farmranchdairy.com
centrations of carbon monoxide before the rodent has a chance to either
escape or block the burrow.
An internal combustion engine
generates the carbon monoxide and
drives a compressor pump that pressurizes the exhaust gas to 115 psi in a
storage tank. An air hose and a hand
held probe inject the gas directly into
the burrow without any digging.
Brand new to the PERC lineup is
the PERC 620, a trailer-mounted unit
with a 20 hp motor and six reels - each
with a 50’ hose and hand probe. The
620 features a tandem axle with turf
tires. It sells for $12,950 plus S&H.
The PERC 412 is a trailer-mounted
unit with a 13 hp motor and four reels
each with a 50’ hose and the hand
probe. The 412 features turf tires and
is designed to be pulled behind an
ATV. It sells for $7,249 plus S&H.
The PERC 206 is a skid-mounted
unit with a 6.5 hp engine, two reels
with 50’ hoses and hand probes. It
sells for $4,595 plus S&H.
The PERC 206T is the skid unit
mounted on its own special trailer. It
sells for $4,995 plus S&H.
The PERC system is simple to use
and safe for the operator as well as
wildlife since there is no poison bait
or explosion involved. Crop stands
are not damaged during treatment.
No other control method is as effective, efficient and as inexpensive to
operate as the PERC.
A PERC system can treat moderately infested alfalfa fields at about 3.5
acres an hour with a single operator.
Each probed location requires only
about 1 to 2 minutes injection time.
Units have been shipped to customers from Southern California to central Canada and as far east as Florida.
Though most of the market has been
with alfalfa growers, orchard and
specialty crop growers have also purchased units. The PERC system is the
best solution anywhere burrowing rodents are a problem.

Elston Manufacturing
From Sanders to Gopher Getters
I
n 1925, Rue R. Elston, the founder
of the Elston Company and his
wife, Clara, and son, Wendell,
moved to Sioux Falls, SD from Spencer,
Iowa. Rue found employment with the
Manchester Biscuit Company. The next
year his son Jack was born. In 1927 Rue,
wife Clara, and two sons, Wendell and
Jack moved to Minneapolis, MN where
Rue found work as a bus driver for Twin
City Motor Bus.
One snowy night, Rue saw a young
man get hit by a car while spreading
sand with a shovel at a bus stop. The
man lost his leg in the accident. After
seeing this accident, Rue thought a unit
could be manufactured to mount in
front of the drive wheels of a bus and
be electrically controlled by the driver.
Such a unit could help eliminate this
type of accident by spreading sand in
front of the drive wheels of the bus. After extensive testing and engineering,
the first units were installed on Greyhound buses.
In 1938 a corporation was formed to
manufacture the Elston Electric Sander.
Today sanders are used on city buses
such as those in Seattle, Washington and
are mandatory on school buses in many
Northern States. They are also used on
fire trucks and a special design for railroad trains.
In 1952 Rue, and his son Jack, engineered and designed the Elston Cargo
Space heater, a unit that controls the
inside temperature of semi-trailers
that transport products that cannot
be frozen. Through the years several
models have been designed. These
units are sold in the United States,
Canada, and parts of Europe.

Wachtman Agri Supply Makes Equipment To LAST!
F
or the past 21 years, owner Loren Wachtman and his crew have
been manufacturing and selling
long-lasting, competitively priced plastic fertilizer augers for use with gravity
wagons, trucks and planters.
“We offer fertilizer and seed handling
auger systems, using plastic to reduce
corrosion and maintenance,” Loren
says.
And now, as part of their commitment
to keep up with the latest trends in agriculture, they’re offering seed-fill systems for today’s new no-till grain drills
which feature flexible, polypropylene
bristle flighting to move soybeans and
other fragile seeds quickly and easily
while still maintaining high quality.
“We’re concerned about the quality and
durability of our systems,” Loren says.
“Having grown up on a farm, I know
the importance of high quality and durable equipment.”
Wachtman Agri Supply offers horizontal crossaugers for most popular 4- to
8 • Western Farm, Ranch and Dairy
16-row planters and 15- and 20-foot
grain drills; mounted truck and gravity
wagon augers; and such accessories as
6-inch steel-core bristle flighting and
6-inch plastic flighting with a stainlesssteel core.
Loren is especially proud of his new
radius-track drill-fill auger.
On this unit, a single vertical auger is
taken out of the transport cradle and the
hopper is placed on the ground behind
the center of the drill.
The upper portion of the auger is held
Rocky Mountain/Heartland
in place by a trolley, which travels from
side to side on a radius track that’s
mounted behind the drill.
As the auger travels from side to side,
the intake hopper remains in its original
position on the ground.
This auger features PVC tubing, a plastic hopper and either steel-core bristle
flighting or plastic cupped flighting. Loren’s Rust Evader Auger Systems have
been formally recognized as Showstoppers at the National Farm Machinery
Show in Louisville.
Loren is planning a larger building
in the near future to accommodate his
growing business and he’s looking forward to offering new products for the
constantly changing agricultural equipment market.
And while his business IS going strong,
it’s not too big to care about the individual farmer.
“We feel we’re still small enough to
provide our customers with personalized, helpful service,” he says.

Adequate available sulfur increases yield and quality. 200 lbs of N usually
required, especially in a hot year. If your field looks dark and spindly (like
cold water rice) utilize more S. (60 lbs.) Rice uses less sulfur than any of
these crops. Why grow any of these crops without sulfur?
CORN

This is good for it shows some N entering the plant through the

URAM increases nitrogen efficiency.
URAM decreases global warming by decreasing methane gas production and
increasing carbon dioxide utilization by crops. Crops produce more oxygen.

EZ Products
I
n 1969, Claude Sheets was running
cattle on wheat pasture. He needed a
way to roll up the barbed wire that was
being used for electric fence. After many
sleepless nights, he invented the EZ Roll
machine. He built 5 custom machines and
applied for a patent. Sending an updated,
more sophisticated replica to the patent office, Claude began to mass produce them.
The patent was issued in 1972.
Over the years, a successful manufacturing business was established.
The business is still being operated by
Claude & Jo Nell Sheets, under the
name of E-Z Products, incorporated as
Sheets Enterprises.
Over 13,000 have been sold on a money back guarantee and none have been

NEW CAB INTERIORS
PRE-CUT INSTALLATION KITS complete with original material, adhesive & instructions
Save Your
Hearing
With A New
FEHR CAB KIT
A
fter years of hard work, your
tractor and combine cabs start
showing their age (just like us
farmers)! The foam starts sagging and
deteriorating, making your cab dirty,
dusty and noisy, but a new FEHR CAB
INTERIOR can help your tractor environment become quieter and cleaner.
The insulation really should be replaced
when it starts to harden and crumble,
because it loses all acoustical properties
and the sound waves are no longer absorbed. Hours spent in a noisy cab can
damage your hearing!
FEHR CAB INTERIORS began as an
upholstery service in 1988. As farmers
began requesting new insulation for
their tractors, we researched and found
the original materials for all the different models, and went right to our customer’s farms with our service: sewing
machine, glue pots, and cutting tables.
We replaced hundreds of tractor and
combine cab interiors in farmers’ machine sheds across the Midwest.
As our customer demand grew, we put
together pre-cut, formed, and pre-sewed
kits for the most popular models and
started shipping the kits to farmers all
over the country. FEHR CAB INTERIOR kits are complete with detailed
instructions, a diagram, and the best adhesives for applying our parts. Since we
also install many cab kits, we know how
they need to be made for the best fit.
In the last 15 years the ag-industry has
shifted to pre-molded, thermoformed
plastic components. We are now manufacturing the most popular parts, and
add new models as demand requests.
It’s simple to order from us: call 815692-3355 or fax us at 815-692-2574 or
visit our website @ www.fehrcab.com.
We try to ship your order right to your
farm within a few days.

Thoughts on Dryland
Range Improvement
By: Russell Holzhäuser, Wind River Seed
J
ust the other morning I overheard
a crop manager talking to someone in the office about crops and
costs. At one point he mentioned alfalfa longevity and replanting costs. I
thought to myself, that wouldn’t be an
issue with Falcata alfalfa. I went out
and visited with him a bit about trying
some Falcata. We talked qualities and
price and he seemed interested when
he left. It’s still January; we’ll see.
I went back to my office where I was
trying to come up with a requested
article from Wind River Seed for this
publication. Duh, big red truck. Let
me visit with you a bit about Falcata
and see if I can get you a little interested too.
The story has almost become a rural
legend around here. Back in the early years of the 20th century a South
Dakota University agronomist, N.E.
Hansen, brought some seed back from
Siberia up around the Arctic Circle.
(Remember this, there’ll be a test.)
Around 1915 he brought a small package to a rancher named Gehriki and
suggested he try planting it. This was
up around Lodgepole in Northwest
South Dakota; east of the Standing
Rock Indian Reservation.
Bud Smith currently ranches there
and Gehriki was his great uncle. The
seed from the agronomist that was
planted in 1915 was Falcata or yellow flowered alfalfa and that stand
has spread in all directions and was
still there in 2003. I haven’t seen it
but it might still be there today. Can
you say that about any other alfalfa
stands?
Here are some talking points to consider:
12 • Western Farm, Ranch and Dairy
• Alfalfa persistence in the Northern
Great Plains requires good winterhardiness. - That original Falcata seed
was collected in Siberia near the Arctic Circle. (See I told you there’d be
a test.) It has shown superior survival
in very cold places.
• In case you haven’t heard, drought
tolerance is getting to be more of a plus
these years. - Falcata alfalfa or Medicago falcata has a fibrous spreading
root system more like prairie grasses
unlike the taproot commonly found in
Medicago sativa, the purple flowered
alfalfa species. This allows yellow
flowered alfalfa to compete more successfully with other prairie species for
the water from those short afternoon
rain dumps that characterize our summer moisture.
• Besides persistence, bloat is another concern with grazing alfalfa.
- Bud Smith reports that he’s never
had a bloat problem in his rotational
grazing. There is some research out of
Canada that suggests a reason for this.
One study identified a protein group
Rocky Mountain/Heartland
in falcata that may play a role in decreased bloat potential. Hear me when
I say that the jury isn’t in on this point
so I don’t want to hear folks quoting
me saying that Falcata is a bloat-free
alfalfa. It isn’t.
• There are a lot of alfalfa varieties out
there. How does Falcata stack up to the
rest? - The ideal place to plant Falcata is
into established dry grassy rangelands.
Assessments of the successful introduction of Falcata on these sites have
shown increase in associated forage
production, rough protein percentage as
well as increased nitrogen and carbon
levels. Most of you are familiar with
some of Falcata’s cousins. Most all of
the “dryland” alfalfa types have some
Falcata in them. These include Ranger,
Vernal, Drylander, Rangelander, Travois, Ladak and Spredor types. The
broad-crowned creeping rooted habit
and many branched fine leaved character of the plants lend themselves well to
grazing.
• How about the cost? - Back in 2003
seed stock totaled between 20 and 40
pounds and a pound ran around $30.00.
I am happy to say that in January 2008
supplies are much better and pricing is
very competitive with other public varieties. It may take longer to firmly establish but, given a longevity of 20 years or
more and observations of root tillering
at about 2 feet from the parent, I’d have
to say its worth having a look at the yellow flowered alfalfa.
Final thought - If you are already using
dryland varieties or if you have dryland
range that’s looking a little tired and
peaked, you owe it to yourself to give
Falcata a try.

Erath Earth, Inc.
E
rath Earth, Inc., founded in 1989 by organic agriculture
specialist Sabino Cortez, began as a small business focused in manufacturing organic products for the home
and also for large-scale farmers.
After much research and time in the laboratory, Sabino
patented the Vortex Generator in 1992 as an ultra-efficient
manure separator for dairies and farming facilities. The serendipitous effect that the Vortex Generator had on water led
to oxygenation and the creation of aerobic compost tea. This
compost tea became an ideal natural fungicide, insecticide,
and soil inoculate all in one. Realizing the benefits of this
product, Sabino marketed it to growers, encouraging those
who had been using chemical products to move to this natural
and organic method.
In recent years, Sabino has tested soil growth and cattle grazing in surrounding areas of Texas. With the use of his compost
tea, Sabino found that grazers could increase cattle grazing
population and gain 50% productivity through a mob grazing technique. This increase in grazing on grasses grown with
compost tea had other benefits as well including improved soil
fertility, healthier cattle, and also an increase in native plant
and animal population.
Erath Earth, Inc. has since expanded into a global company
that specializes in consulting work with large-scale organic
farming endeavors with the overall goal of creating more sustainable and healthy food sources for the world over.
The array of products produced by Erath Earth, Inc. caters

to organic fruit and vegetable producers as well as the grassfed beef industry, in hopes that these food sources will become
more prevalent than other chemical-based options. With the
social veil on chemically-enhanced foods being lifted, consumers are becoming more and more aware of where and how
their food is being produced. Erath Earth seeks to inform the
consumer about healthy food sources and provide the catalyst
for discussion on natural growth methods and a movement towards organic techniques.
The goal of Erath Earth, Inc. is to allow growers and farmers
to do more with less. Erath Earth products and techniques are
more cost effective than their chemical counterparts and save
producers both time and money. The long term effect of Earth
Earth’s organic methods can be seen both in the health of the
consumers and in the quality of the land.
Sabino believes everybody has a right to eat organic, healthy
foods grown naturally and Erath Earth, Inc. is laying the groundwork for that possibility. As the President and CEO of Erath
Earth, Inc. he has managed to maintain the integrity and honest standards that he set out to provide to his customers some
twenty years ago.

Reel-Tites....
since 1971
T
he REEL-TITE fence tightener's patented design can save
you 75% to 90% of your fence
maintenance labor. You can use them
on any kind of wire....new, old, rusty,
high tensile....without unstapling and
restretching! REEL-TITES DO NOT
BREAK THE WIRE. REEL-TITES can
be retightened at anytime with the portable handle. A REEL-TITE is a metal
disc measuring 4" X 2 3/4" and made
of 13-gauge steel with a plated, weatherresistant finish.
HERE'S HOW THEY WORK.....
Under average conditions, place one
REEL-TITE on each wire in the middle of a 40 rod span of fence. Tighten
up the REEL-TITE turning the handle
clockwise until the wire reaches the
desired tension. An out-turned flange
holds the REEL-TITE securely in
place. Remove the handle. The next
time you check the span of fence,
the slack will have equalized to the
REEL-TITE. Then, simply retighten
the REEL-TITE with the handle. The
tension can be maintained on this span
of fence for the life of the wire!! With
a little practice, it will take you one
minute to tighten four wires and only
30 seconds to retighten them. Think of
it this way.....a fence is never tight in
one area and loose somewhere else...
this is the equalization principle. Let
equalization work for you.

and ETHOSFR+ FUEL
TREATMENT - a Great Team
I
n today’s economy, who doesn’t
want to protect their automobile
investment and save money at the
gas pump?
Penny Peters, an ECOMATES™ Independent Business Owner, addresses this
question daily on her website at www.
pennies4fuel.com. She also provides a
way of making it possible for people to
accomplish these goals.
Scientific tests on ethosFR+ indicated
a significant reduction of measured
tailpipe emissions for Hydrocarbons,
Carbon Monoxide, Nitrous Oxide, and
Particulate Matter. A marked improvement in horsepower and fuel economy
was also noted.
According to the California Environmental Engineering Lab (CEE) Research Director Joe Jones, the results
were “surprising” and outperformed
most other additives that the CEE has
tested in the past.
Corey P. Schlossmann, Ethos Environmental, Inc.’s CEO, said, “These
test results from a CARB certified unit
verify, with a high level of confidence
the validity of ethosFR+ and its high
probability for continual improvement
with constant use.” Everyone should
take advantage of the economical and
environmental benefits of EthosFR+.
Both gasoline-fueled and diesel–fueled
engines operate at much lower efficiencies than the theoretical thermodynamic
cycle. In a diesel-fueled engine, the single-most limiting parameter is poor air
utilization, resulting in a loss of 10% to
15% of the engine’s energy output.
ECOMATES™ offers an optimal fuel

reformulator called EthosFR+ Fuel
Treatment that addresses fundamental
weaknesses in diesel and gasoline engines. Product testing conducted on medium and heavy duty trucks and large
stationary diesel engines have shown
fuel economy improvements ranging
from 10 to 23%, although results vary
based on engine, overall age and condition of the engine, weather, and other
engine variables.
When combined, ECOMATES™
EthosFR+ Fuel Treatment and EthosFR
Oil Treatment the ester molecules penetrate and condition the metal quickly to
clean and lubricate your engine. Together
they go to work to lubricate, cool, clean
and protect your engine. Which in return
you will receive improved horsepower,
increased mileage, reduced maintenance
costs and longer engine life.
Ethos FR+ saves consumers on average 7% to 19% each time they fill up. It
dramatically reduces harmful emissions
30% or more. Using Ethos FR+ will
save consumers more than the price of
the product. It is non-toxic, nonflammable, non-hazardous and biodegradable.
Hundreds of millions of miles of road
testing has been done on this product.
Each time, Ethos Fr has proven to reduce the engine exhaust emissions and
as a result the fuel mileage increases

used and recommended by the City of
North Miami, Bal Harbour, Florida,
Morris County, New Jersey, Allied
Waste Services, Precision Motor Transport Group and more. It is EPA registered, SAE based test protocol, Herguth
Labs: Ash test and the Southwest Research Institute. The new and improved
blend was tested by the California Environmental Engineering Laboratory,
Center for Environmental Research (the
CEE) in Santa Ana, CA in March. The
CEE is EPA recognized and California
Air Resources Board (CARB) certified.
According to CEE Research Director
Joe Jones, the results were “surprising”
and Ethos FR+ outperformed other additives the CEE has tested in the past.
“The results using the Ethos FR+ product showed significant improvement in
lowering the tailpipe emissions and improving the fuel economy,” he said.
Ethos FR+ works in all fuels including
gas, diesel, bio-diesel, gasoline ethanol
blends, and furnace oil and all motor
oils. It works in any internal combustion engine including cars, trucks, tractors, RV’s, motorcycles, boats, generators, two stroke engines, lawn mowers,

Vertical Tillage Coulter Kit Attachment Gets Even Stronger
R
on’s Manufacturing has added
two more bearings to their kits.
This makes the kits even more
heavy duty. Coulter kits from Ron’s
Manufacturing converts any chisel plow
to a year-round tool to prepare your
fields.
In the fall, it can be used to lightly till
the soil, incorporate and size residue.
It is also a practical way to dry out wet
soils. The Vertical Tillage Coulter Kit
Attachment works well in no-till conservation tillage, as well as conventional
tillage operation, extending the growing
season and creating better planting conditions. Vertical tillage prepares the soil
to warm more quickly in early spring,
energizing the seedbed for maximum
growth and yield potential.
The Vertical Tillage Coulter Kit At-
tachment is a smart investment in that
it has multiple uses which will ultimately produce savings in terms of time
and money. It also has a low operating
cost per acre and can be used in a wider
range of conditions than most tillage
tools. It operates at a relatively high
speed of 6 to 12 MPH which saves time.
The Vertical Tillage Coulter Kit Attachment allows for quick mixing of manure
and soil to prevent loss of nutrients and
control odor. It can also be used for very
shallow incorporation of fertilizer and
select herbicides.
The Vertical Tillage Coulter Kit Attachment is spaced on 6 inches.

Tri-States Grain Conditioning, Inc.
The Importance Of Grain Temperature Detection
T
emperature is the key to safe
grain storage. When grain goes
out of condition, regardless of
the cause, there is always an unusual
increase in temperature. Temperature is
the only truly accurate indicator of grain
quality for those who manage grain.
Knowledge of the causes of deterioration and spoilage in grain is essential to
the grain manager. Although more is yet
to be learned, grain workers and scientific researchers have jointly given much
sound information with which to work.
To point out the uses of a grain temperature system, we will discuss various applications of temperature information.
Grain is a living organism. Like other
living things, it breathes (respires) and it
may become sick. Excessive moisture,
high temperature, and poor grain condition (damaged kernels) are generally
considered the most important factors
that lead to trouble in stored grain.
The use of moisture tests in receiving
grain is an indication of the great importance given moisture as a criterion for stor-
age ability. Some tend to over-emphasize
moisture content to the exclusion of all
other factors, but low moisture content is
not enough to ensure trouble-free storage.
In fact, deterioration from excessive moisture can occur in grain which is placed
in storage at a uniform moisture content
below that considered safe for long term
storage. Temperature and atmospheric
changes can cause certain areas within a
mass of stored grain to rise in moisture
above the critical safe moisture level.
Temperature importance is best indicated by the use of refrigeration to keep
foodstuffs, and by the tendency of high
temperatures to speed most chemical
reactions.
Grain condition refers to the soundness of grain. It has been demonstrated
that unsound grain (grain with a high
percentage of damaged kernels, greater
number of microorganisms, and with
deteriorative chemical changes) is much
more likely to heat in storage than sound
grain of the same moisture content. Both
grain respiration and the growth of mi-
croorganisms are thought to be affected
when grain is unsound.
Now let us examine the causes of heating, and determine their relationship to
grain deterioration and spoilage.
The three specific causes of heating
that are of interest to you are:
1. respiration of the grain itself (metabolism of viable grain)
2. microflora (microorganisms such
as fungi and bacteria)
3. insect infestation.
All three contribute to total respiration
and heat production below 135° F. One
type of heating alone can cause trouble,
but one type of heating can also serve to
trigger another problem which will contribute to total heat production.
Grain respiration increases as the moisture content of grain increases. This increase is gradual until a critical moisture
content is passed. Respiration then increases faster than the heat of respiration can be dissipated. This will cause a
marked temperature rise, but corrections

are possible before damage is done; i.e.
aerate, turn, or dry. This condition will
occur in grain of relatively high moisture content and in cases of moisture
translocation.
The increased temperatures are likely
to excite the other two causes of heating.
When grain respiration alone is the cause
of heating, visual inspection of the trouble area, while turning, will show little
evidence of cause. If moisture translocation has brought about the increased rate
of respiration of the grain, aeration can
be employed to correct the situation.
If the moisture content of the entire
lot of grain approaches or exceeds the
critical limit, and if grain drying equipment is available, drying is advisable,
especially as a precaution against future
problems.
The important thing for us to note
about microorganisms is the fact that
they respire and tend to increase the rate
of respiration of the grain. Thus a rise
in temperature can mean microorganism
growth. If the temperatures of the grain
mass are low, such growth can be slow
and temperature rises relatively small.
Slowly rising temperatures warrant investigation of the causes. When indications
appear, look closely for growth of microorganisms as you inspect your grain.
During the last 70 years, many factors
have made accurate temperature knowledge even more important than before.
For example:
1. Grain is stored longer and in larger
bins, making the risk in holding it greater.
2. Damage from insect infestation is
great.
3. Grain is harvested and often stored
when it has high moisture content.
4. There is a greater demand for top
quality grain.
5. The cost of handling and moving
grain has increased. It costs from 2-1/2
to 5 cents per bushel to move grain. Accurate temperature information allows
an operator to turn his grain only when
it must be turned.
6. Buyers today want assurance that
grain purchased is of uniform quality
throughout. Unless a grain manager has
temperature records, one cannot be certain of the condition of purchased grain.
7. With the use of aeration systems,
temperature knowledge is essential.
24 • Western Farm, Ranch and Dairy
The grain manager must know if and
when hot spots are forming before the
aeration system can do a thorough and
economical job.
These are the reasons why temperature
information is important to a modern
cost-conscious grain manager. No matter what type of grain is stored, the same
basic principle holds true: You must
know the temperature of your grain
to know the condition of your grain.
It is imperative that the grain manager
has accurate, complete, and up-to-date
temperature information for good grain
management. Monitoring the temperature of grain on a regular basis gives
the manager the best chance to make a
correction when a temperature change is
occurring. Knowing the temperature of
the grain makes it possible for the fans
to be run only when they are needed,
saving money in utilities.
Now, there are several ways to obtain
this temperature. 1) You could use the
“Feel and Smell” method. All that is required here is for the grain manager to
feel the side of his bin and smell inside
the bin in an attempt to detect heating.
Another variation of this method is while
turning the grain, it is felt, smelled, and/
or visually inspected on a belt or at a
spout outlet to detect heating. Obviously, this method has its drawbacks, due
to the limited knowledge these observations will bring.
2) The “Thermometer Method” is
another way to read temperatures. With
Rocky Mountain/Heartland
this method, pipes are inserted into the
grain mass and a thermometer lowered
into them. After a time, the thermometer is raised and the temperature read for
that point. This method also has several
serious drawbacks. 1) It is very time consuming. (A thermometer is not designed
to furnish quick readings). 2) It must
also pass through grain temperatures
which are above or below that which
is to be measured. 3) It must be read
very quickly once it is withdrawn from
the pipe, and often in a poorly-lit area,
making fast, accurate readings nearly
impossible. 4) In addition, currents are
set up inside the pipe itself which may
affect the readings. Although much better than the “feel and smell” method, the
thermometer leaves much to be desired
in all phases of accuracy, dependability
and speed of obtaining temperatures.
3) A third concept is the thermocouple
cable method. A thermocouple is nothing more than two dissimilar metals soldered together to make a heat sensing
point. TSGC, Inc cables have thermocouples made of copper and constantan
(an alloy of copper and nickel), the most
sensitive combination made for grain
bin temperature scanning systems.
Thermocouples are the most widely
used temperature sensor for several reasons. 1) They are rugged, low-cost, dependable, and accurate. 2) The measurement is a point measurement with fairly
quick response to temperature change.
3) Watching the trend (changes) of the
temperatures provides a clear indication
of unusual temperature activity.
We will repeat again the paragraph we
began with: Temperature is the key to
safe grain storage and quality grain.
When grain goes out of condition, regardless of the cause, there is always
an unusual increase in temperature.
Temperature is the only truly accurate
indicator of grain quality for those who
manage grain.
TSGC, Inc. is one of the largest suppliers of grain temperature monitoring
equipment in the world. Headquartered in
America’s Heartland, our administration,
fabricating, sales and service divisions are

Texas Fence Fixer
Fence Fixing Made Easy
O
ne of the most valuable assets for a farmer and rancher
is their time. That time can be
saved by use of a unique tool called the
Texas Fence Fixer.
Invented and patented by Ken Evans
of Sequin, Texas, the tool will tighten or
take slack out of barb wire, horse wire,
electric wire, net wire and high tensile
wire, all with equal ease. "If you're like
me," says Evans. "You’ve spent a lot
of hours mending fences, using come
a longs, pieces of pipe and most anything you can get your hands on. It is
a back breaking, knuckle busting, time
thieving chore and I figured there had
to be an easier and faster way. While
ranching near San Saba, TX, Ken did
a lot of experimenting and modifying
26 • Western Farm, Ranch and Dairy
until he had invented a tool that really
worked on loose fence and the Texas
Fence Fixer was born.
Popularity of the tool is easy to understand if you ever had to tighten a
sagging fence, only to have it go loose
again when the tool of choice is removed.
With the Texas Fence Fixer, no staples
or tie wires are removed and with a
little practice, the job can be complete
in 30 seconds to a minute and when
the tool is removed, the fence remains
completely tight. To tighten a wire, the
arms are spread wide to catch the slack
wire between the jaw slots. When the
two arms are pulled together and the
chain fastened, a loop forms inside the
tool area. A piece of spare wire is laid
Rocky Mountain/Heartland
across the face of the tool and wrapped
a few times on each side of the tool.
Then the handle of the fence pliers or
smooth pipe is inserted between the two
wires and they are turned (not twisted)
together until they almost become one
wire and the fence is tight. The wire is
not crimped or damaged in any way.
The tool is totally American made
with parts formed in a Texas foundry,
shipped to a 5,000 Sq. Ft. shop in Sequin. Texas, ground to perfection and
assembled and painted by the Evans'.
The tool carries a lifetime warranty.

“The 66 participants had two very
well-managed farms to visit located
near Wooster, Ohio,” said contest chair
John Goeser from Vita Plus. “They rose
to the challenge to analyze those operations.”
This year’s contest, hosted by The
Ohio State University, included students
from University of Illinois, Iowa State
University, Kansas State University,
Lakeshore Technical College, Michigan
State University, University of Minnesota, The Ohio State University, Ohio
State University-Agricultural Technical
Institute, Purdue University, South Dakota State University, Southwest Wisconsin Technical College, University of
Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-River Falls, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and the UW-Madison
Farm & Industry Short Course.
Working in four- or five-person, mixeduniversity teams, students assessed all
aspects of a working dairy farm and
then presented their highest priority
recommendations to a panel of judges
and the dairy business owners. Judges
chose three teams as Platinum winners,
the contest’s highest distinction. The
individuals who comprised these teams
were Holly Bruns, South Dakota State;
Ryan Conklin, Ohio State; Sabrina Eick,
OSU-ATI; Andrea Eilenfeld, Ohio State;
Allison Flinn, Iowa State; Tricia Gates,

and Ed Weisgarber, OSU-ATI.
Comprehensive Experience For Participants
Arriving the evening of February 11,
participants first gained new insights
about sales careers, dairy nutrition, farm
finance and industry image from dairy
industry professionals. The Dairy Challenge teams were then formed and began analyzing their assigned operation.
www.farmranchdairy.com
Steinhurst Dairy is a seventh-generation
dairy farm. Myron Steiner and his three
sons, Carlton, David and John, started
with a 25-cow dairy in 1959. As time
progressed, David and John took over
the day-to-day operations. The family
formed an LLC in 1995 with John, David, and David’s sons, Eric and Kurt. After the untimely death of David Steiner
last February, the operation reorganized
its leadership with John, Kurt, and Eric.
All three of them are involved in various
aspects of the operation. Currently, the
farm consists of 410 milking cows and
1,200 acres.
The Ayers Family Dairy is certainly a
family-operated dairy farm. Carl Ayers returned home in 1968 to assume
management responsibilities along
with brother, Steve, and parents Ed
and Ina. Carl’s wife Janet and Steve’s
wife Deb help manage the dairy fulltime as well. Kathy Davis returned to
help manage the farming operation
full-time in 1994. Jesse Ayers returned
to help manage the farming operation
full-time in 2002. David Ayers is currently helping with the farming operation and taking agronomy courses in
After touring the dairy on February 12,
teams developed questions that were
used to in interviews with herd owners
to better assess dairy management and
farming operations. This information,
combined with their observations, herd
production and financial information,
was then used by each team to develop a
report about what they saw and opportunities for improvement.
On the final day, February 13, each
team was given 20 minutes to present
their recommendations before the herd
owners and a panel of judges with expertise ranging from dairy management,
nutrition and reproduction to animal
health and ag business finance.
Throughout the weekend, participants
had many opportunities to network with
industry professionals. Representatives from NAIDC Platinum sponsors,
including several who were looking to
hire both interns and full-time employees, were also available for a career fair
held on Saturday.
