Issue 6 July 2016 Goodbye Goodbye to our Year Six & Newspaper team—Derin, Azhar, Amy, Noel, Jenna and Johanan. Thank you so much for all your help this year We say a sad goodbye to Miss Devery, Miss Nai, Miss Winterburn and Miss Holmes. You will be greatly missed—good luck with your future. Welcome to staff An Interview with Nick Gibson (The Dingo Frisbee Team’s Physio) How did you get involved with Ultimate Frisbee? Well, I am physiotherapist, and I have been actively involved in sports related injuries for most of my career. I trained in Australia, and when I moved to the UK I got involved with some local football teams as a side job. Through this, I was able to get in contact with some people who were involved in Ultimate Frisbee in the UK, and naturally was drawn to helping the Australians whenever they play overseas. I am actually up to my 5 th Worlds Campaign. How often do the Australian team play in England? There are many different types of teams that play in international games. The team you guys saw play every four year in the World Championships. Last year it was the Under 23’s team (The Bluebottles). There are also mixed teams (Barramundis), women’s teams, men’s teams and masters. Between the world championships, they have other less formal competitions. What do you like about Ultimate Frisbee? I really like how it is a game that relies on fairness and honestly. There are no refs in UF, the game relies on players to sort it out themselves. As a result it is a genuinely fair game, the players are all really cool people and open to community involvement. It is also a really underrated sport that deserves a lot more recognition. It requires a lot of true athleticism and speed, as well as agility and coordination. It’s actually really hard. Do you play in the game? Haha not officially, what would happen if the guy that fixes people got injured? Who would fix me?? As soon as we got there, we had our delicious lunch and started practising. There were 4 pitches. As we kept on playing, we got better and better Karan Chauhan 4M Year 6 football tournament This tournament was challenging for the 6 teams 6M teams A and B, 6S teams A and B and 6J teams A and B. The 3 classes all fought hard with their spirits and football prowess. They weren’t sore losers and they had positive minds even when they lost. Acting like real football players, they all put up a good game and never lost hope. In the end the last 2 teams had a penalty shootout and one team was victorious: 6J team A. By Noel and Azhar British Library 5M’S trip to the British library was a trip to remember. The vast variety of books was astonishing and mindblowing. Our leader was called Sheila who took us around the ginormous library. She handed us a sheet of paper with treasure hunts on it for us to discover new books and facts about the library. Our first activity was the treasure hunt. She then led us into an eerie dimmed lit room called the gallery room. Year 4 Roman Workshop learnt about the generations of Emperors and how they greeted their subjects. Later on Miss Penny showed them replicas of Ancient Roman Pottery, which were found and repaired. They also learnt Currently in humaniabout the battle of ties, year 4 are learnColchester and how ing about the Rothe Roman and Celts mans. In addition, on fought. After that, we had to find a book with real and pure gold on its pages! We also had a go at listening to ancient music written by some famous composers such as: George Fredric Handel, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Mozart. It was really fun and gave us a chance to learn what kind of music people listened to back in the day. After that we had a chance of making our own books, we went into an empty classroom and that’s where we made our books. Then we ate our lunch as we sat down for a few minutes listening to the sound of other children munching away at their sandwiches. Now it was finally time to head back to school and that was our day at the British Library. It truly was a trip to remember! By Kamran Rabeiy and Shannon Craig. make several masks, wings and plants. To top all of that, we also made our very own Kapok tree! We went On Friday 17th june 2016, 5M put on a majestic, colourful assembly, centred around the Amazon Rainfor- through soooooo much trouble. Soon, it was Quiz time! The questions were easy if you est. We worked extremely hard on preparing the assembly. We gave lots of facts on deforestation, growing were listening because all the answers were in the asnew trees and how to stop animals from driving to ex- sembly. The prizes for the quiz were plants grown happily by Dhruv Tank. tinction. The assembly started at 9.15am and ended at 9.50am. After we sang a song called ‘Power in Me’. We sang that song because we believe we have the power in us After sharing a few facts, the play started. It was entitled ’The Great Kapok Tree’. The story was based on a to stop deforestation. woodcutter cutting down a tress and a group of protest- After a long time of practising, our fabulous assembly paid off. ers persuaded him to stop the removal of trees. The props and costumes took us forever!!! We had to 5M’s Incredible Class Assembly 5J’s Eggs-celent Easter Assembly It all happened on a Wednesday morning when class 5J presented our amusing assembly at 9.30am. Our class assembly was based on the story of Easter. Firstly, we started it with an introduction, after that, we narrated and acted the story of Jesus passing. Also, we acted out how Jesus wanted to spread the word of God. Then we sang a couple of songs which were: Power in me, Sing Hosanna and Wonder. Lastly, we finished off our jaw dropping assembly with a song loved by all the school….Musical Melodies! We got everybody to stand up and join in. We also put all the colourful lights on, followed with the glamorous disc ball. By Rayhana Amin 5J My Stone Age Assembly It was embarrassing to show a performance to 390 children plus 30 parents! I was the main character Sam. I had a shirt on and some blue jeans. Part of our learning was about the Stone Age. One of our activities was when we went under the tables and with chalk drew some stone age things on 5J’s Easter Assembly On Wednesday 23rd March 2016, class 5J presented their Easter Assembly to the rest of the school. It was based on the story of Easter and it also had three songs (which were really fun to sing). It was the last assembly that Mrs Rai, Ms D’Souza and Mrs Richards would see so it was extra special. Our main character was Aryan, who was playing Jesus. It was a memorable assembly because Mrs Richards said it was a lovely assembly and she’ll never forget it. By Amer Jawad 5J Mount Stewart’s Got Talent When I arrived, the first thing I saw was a big box which we had to put our tickets in and after that me and my family went into the vast hall. There were benches all lined up in a row, but with an aisle for people to walk down. We then seated ourselves and after that they announced the runners-up and the winners for the brochure competition. We started off with the first act from year 3. After that we had the winners announced by the judges Mrs Young, Miss Winterburn and Miss O’Brian. Then we had the year 4 acts and the winners were announced. There was an intermission, and then we did year 5 and year 6. The winners were: Year 3: 1st Avni (dance), 2nd Arjun (singing), 3rd Nicholas (traditional dance), 4th Pratham (ventriloquism/puppetry) Year 4: 1st Japesh (piano), 2nd Rassiah (singing), 3rd Shaani & Nakisha (dancing), 4th Drisana, Niam & Karan (Tae Kwon Do) Year 5: 1st Nikisha, Nidhi, Martha & Shivani (acting), 2nd Bhavya (guitar) 3rd Tanuja, Hanaya, Naavya & Brinda (dance), 4th Raina, Rubina & Tavisha (singing) Year 6: 1st Zayan, Shivaan, Jairaj (year 4), Rishaan & Nikhil (boy band), 2nd Nansi (traditional dance), 3rd Emad, Shaylen (modern dance), 4th Shan, Yohanan (piano & singing duet) Saturday 25th June 2016 was the best day ever! It was amazing and I loved it! By Shaani 4M brown and white pieces of paper that were stuck on to our tray places. I had an enjoyable time performing. At the end our parents congratulated us, we were rewarded with an afternoon of watching horrible histories. I felt proud of myself for saying a long speech loudly and clearly. By Ahaan Saraf 3M Year 6 trip to Boulogne We got to school at about 4:45am, signed in with our group leader and waited for our coach to arrive. We left at about 5:15 am and the coach looked really cool because it had an upstairs and a downstairs. It took a long time to get to Dover so that we could go onto The Eurotunnel, which is an underwater tunnel that goes to France. When we got there, we went to the Boulangerie (the French bakery) to learn how to make croissants and French bread. The man that taught us to make croissants was a bit scary at first but we eventually realised that he as just joking with us. He also taught us how to say different ingredients that were in the pastry in French. For example: egg is oeuf, butter is beurre, and water is eau. Next, we went to have lunch. After that, we had a tour of the old town in Boulogne. The lady, who was our tour guide, was very informative and taught us a lot of facts. Then, we went to Nausica, the aquarium in Boulogne. We had the chance to explore different types of fish and sea creatures including huge turtles and giant sharks! It was really fun. Next, we had a chance to go to the shop in the aquarium. Subsequently, we headed back on the coach where we waited for the ferry to arrive. Unfortunately, the ferry was delayed by 1 hour. It was really cool to see the coach actually drive into the ferry! On the ferry we had dinner but we could pay for our food in pounds. Some of us had never been on a ferry before so it was an exciting experience. After dinner, we had a chance to go to the top deck and see The White Cliffs of Dover! It was really cold but still fun. Then, the coach drove out of the ferry and we started our trip from Dover back to Mount Stewart. All of us were really tired and we got back after midnight! Overall it was a great trip. Written by Derin 6S Year Four’s Day at Whipsnade Zoo First we got on the coach to the amazing Whipsnade Zoo. We were so excited that even the teachers couldn’t calm us down! Finally, after we had checked in we went to see the European animals. We saw a wild boar, a lynx and a wolverine but my personal favourite were the grizzly bears. They were scary but cute. After that we saw the penguins. They looked adorable but smelt like raw fish. Then we ran to watch the Birds of the World show. I was really amazed when the two macaws were better than me, being able to work with a partner is not as easy as it seems! Next we had to find a place to eat before the sea lion show which started at 12.00. When we had finished it was one minute to twelve, just in time for the show. They did loads of tricks that were really cool. Then they all had an X-ray, even the pregnant one! It was truly amazing. Our workshop was tremendous! We got to touch a real life snake! It felt just like my mum’s leather handbag. Luckily it wasn’t poisonous, so most of us touched it. Then we went to see the Asian animals. We bumped into Miss Johnson’s group on the way. From then on we looked at all the animals together; we saw the lazy tigers, elephants, cheetahs and the stripy zebras. When we came out of the cheetahs it started to pour with rain. Miss Johnson made us run in to see the giraffes. It was worth it though as they were so beautiful. We had an amazing day at Whipsnade Zoo and I would highly recommend it! By Ella Mitchell & Hiya Upadhyay 4S 4S Class Assembly 4S’ class assembly on Thursday was a smash! Our class assembly on the Romans was brilliant and lots of our parents came to watch it. As the children came in we played a song called ‘Just like a Roman’. Mrs Todd told us not to dance to the music, we tried our very best but it was irresistible! First we talked about our Roman Workshop. During the workshop we learnt about how the Romans lived and fought. We learnt that the Romans liked to prepare a sauce called ‘garum’, it was made from fish guts and stank! They even ate milk fattened snails. We also learned how the Romans fought. Ali, Aarush and Naza demonstrated a bloodcurdling flight. Ali pretended to be attacked by Aarush and Naza, who were Celts. Aarush’s dramatic death was hilarious! Then we performed a play called Marcus and the Hare. The play is about Marcus, a craftsman, who is trying to make a design of a mosaic but can’t decide what to do. Rishi, who played Marcus, acted very believably when talking about the design of the mosaic. Ella played Venus, the goddess of love. She tried to persuade Marcus to make a design of her. Next we sung a lovely song called Sing and some of the parents even joined in! We had fun and learnt a lot during our assembly. Everyone clapped and the audience really enjoyed it. By Youssra Kaabar 4S It all started at lunch time, I had to have lunch first. I finished my chicken and I had to go to our hall. With everything I had, I sat down 15 minutes later. I had to walk with two groups down to the bus station. After, I got on the bus and it took seven stops until I got off. We walked to the arena but didn’t get in straight away. Then when we got in everyone had to wear a badge. As we walked in we could believe our eyeballs, but we had a lot of work ahead of us. We had to practise: Music, Haunted House, Disney Medley, History of Music, Pop Rock Melody, Pavane, Splintess, it had better be tonight, Oblivion, Where words fail, Violin Concerto no. 4 in D major, Clash of Clans, Mambo Groove, Mambo from West Side Story and Mamma Mia. Later it was time for us to perform! By Kelis Caesar 5S Our Day at the Frisbee Tournament We were very excited because Miss Gibson’s brother, Nick, got us 50 free tickets to share with year 3, year 4 and year 5 to go and see a Frisbee tournament between Australia and Columbia and then a second match between Australia vs South Africa. We took a coach to the Watford training centre where they do their training. When we first got there, we followed the teacher to the first pitch and Australia won 14-3. We were very excited when Australia scored! We then went to the next pitch and we sat down and ate our delicious snack. After, we watched the second match of Australia and South Africa. One player called the Saltwater Crocodile got hurt by the Frisbee hitting his nose. His nose started bleeding but Australia got the last point and won! Next we ran onto the pitch, after we got a picture with the Australian team. They were very kind and let us play with their own Frisbees. We also played with the Frisbees after we came back to school. We told everyone in the school that Australia won and they were very excited. It was a superb day! Year 4 Whipsnade Trip On the day of the Whipsnade trip we first got on the coach. It was a very tiring trip but eventually we got there. As soon as we got there we went into a classroom where we learned about animals in their habitat and got to touch replicas of tortoises, owls and skulls of animals. At the end we got to touch a female snake called Redgy, the snake was slimy and squishy. After that we went to see the sea lion show where three sea lions performed tricks. Next we ate lunch and after lunch we split into our groups to see the animals. My group went around the whole zoo and saw bears, penguins and much more. My favourite animal was the giraffe because it had a very long neck. After, we went to the gift shop to buy some things and I bought a fluffy monkey toy. Finally we got back to the coach and went back to the school. Whipsnade Zoo was amazing I hope we go there again! Sky Sports News presenter visit On the 20th of June a presenter from Sky Sports News named Dharmesh Sheth (one of the most famous reporters) visited our school to tell us about his interesting job. He stated many interesting facts such as the amount of renowned footballers he has met, how he got the job and when he first decided he wanted to get the job. Around 1997 Dharmesh got a master’s degree in media. After he got his degree he decided that for 1 year he would search and interview famous sportsmen. He sent his reports to Sky News and eventually, after hard work, he had earned his title of news reporter and journalist. Nowadays he keeps track of main sports events going on in the UK. By Noel Azhar Year 6 Cricket Tournament On Friday 24th of June, the year 6 cricket tournament took place on the playground. Luckily, the weather was good so the tournament could be held. Everyone was motivated and in high-spirits. Although we all tried our best only two teams could participate in the finals. The 6m B team and the 6s A team performed amazingly and fortunately made it to the finals! After watching an intense 6s narrowly beat 6m, beating them by only 5 runs. All the teams played superbly, however at the end of the day only one class could win. It was an enjoyable game and we all had a great time. Murderous maths website: http:// www.murderousmaths.co.uk/ Movie review for Zootopia This film entrails the adventures of the two protagonists (a police officer bunny named Judy Hopps and a con-artist fox named Nick Wilde). They are played by voice actors Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman- respectively. This film is set in a fictional city called Zootopia/Zootropolis and the main plot is that a new police officer Judy Hopps is investigating recent disappearances of many predators. Through this investigation she met the con-artist, Nick Wilde, who helps with the investigation but at the same time makes it a bit harder. This movie has a lot of positive messages such as anti-prejudice and teamwork so I would recommend watching it with the entire family at any age. By Noel and Azhar Moby Dick Book Review Moby Dick; or The Whale is a book by the American writer Herman Melville, published in 1851. The narrator, who calls himself Ishmael, travels in the month of December from Manhattan Island to New Bedford with plans to do whaling. During his endeavours he encounters a white whale, which is named Moby Dick by the Narrator: Ishmael. It’s a great story and a wonderful classic to enjoy at home. I, personally, had enjoyed the book and it is a must read. Though there are some phrases and words younger audiences may not understand, I personally recommend it for ages 9 and above. I give it a 10/10 in language and story. I hope you too find this book interesting. By Azgat and Noel WONDER This review is about the fantastic book, Wonder, by R.J.Palacio. This book is about a boy called August, whose nickname is Auggie. Auggie has some general disabilities. Auggie's teachers and Mr. Tushman, the director of Beecher Prep, let him find his own way socially. Auggie himself shows real grace, as well as enough believable kid emotion to make him as amiable as he is admirable. I recommend you read this book, it is brilliant. I hope you enjoy it! By Simran 6S The Jungle Book This is a review about the Jungle Book film. I loved the way the effects come to you but I did not like it when Shere Khan killed the wolf. I felt horrified. Later on I saw a massive monkey eating tons of bananas. Luckily at the end Shere Khan died with the help of Mowgli. I thought they put a lot of effort into this movie.
