Introducing . . . . . the 2007
From the Chairman... It’s finally summertime and time for another exciting season of the KIDS FROM WISCONSIN! For me, the KIDS have become more than just a “summer” activity. Beyond our year-round board meetings – I strangely seem to keep running into former KIDS (KIDS that I had yet to meet) all over the place! Several months ago, I recognized one of the names on a meeting invitation at work from our missing KIDS list. I couldn’t wait to attend the meeting just to ask if she happened to be that person. Before the meeting ever began – I pounced on the opportunity. After a few moments of trying to figure out how I could have possibly known that, she grinned and stated that she was indeed a part of the 1971 troupe. Last week, I attended a Central Wisconsin Symphony board meeting, and mentioned a marketing Volume 26 no. 1 Spring 2007 The Troubadour is published Spring and Winter each year by Kids From Wisconsin, Ltd. Tommy G. Thompson Youth Center, 640 South 84th Street, Milwaukee, WI 53214, Barbara Dorn, Editor. 2 idea that we used for KIDS. After the meeting, one of the directors approached me and told me she was a former KID – and from my hometown of Kenosha nonetheless! It’s great to share KIDS stories with alumni of years long past – and despite the differences in years, the stories are always the same. With just over 700 alumni, and a Wisconsin state population of over five million, it is amazing that I continue to find KIDS alumni who share the same fond memories of the group as I do. But what’s even more amazing is the amount of energy, financial resources and love so many have put forth to keep the KIDS FROM WISCONSIN alive. From our corporate sponsors to our Friends of the KIDS, our dedicated staff to our altruistic volunteers – your dedication and support for this group has truly created a legacy. It’s hard to believe that next year is our 40th anniversary. Plans are already underway to make sure this milestone is properly celebrated. Shirley Azzolina, a former KID and current board member, has taken on the responsibility of chairing this event. If you’d like to help out, please contact the KIDS office. I am sure that you’ll agree – summer just wouldn’t be summer without the KIDS. And to the many who continue to provide support to our organization – know that the KIDS wouldn’t be the KIDS without YOU! We look forward to seeing you this summer! Brad Anderson Chairman of the Board From the Producer... As I write this, it is startling for me to realize that we will soon launch the 39th edition of the KIDS from Wisconsin – nearly four decades of KIDS shows! We have once again recruited and selected an incredibly talented troupe from among Wisconsin’s finest young performers. The finishing touches of the show are being written. Costumes are being designed and created. And our intensive ten week tour schedule is quickly filling up. Summer is here! I am looking forward to this year’s dynamic mix of first time and returning KIDS, with an especially high turnover in the band – 10 of 13 are new this year! Our show this summer will include a wide range of popular music, ranging from Queen to Henry Mancini, swing to ragtime, soul to Broadway. You must come and see a show, and discover the KIDS magic for yourself! Some updates on our staff: Amanda Lewin (KID 2005) joins the staff as Tour Assistant, filling the vacancy left by Liz Ofte (KID 2003-04), who wonderfully handled the tour assistant duties last summer, but is getting married in August. The rest of our staff returns for another summer. I could not be prouder of the fine artistic staff that puts together our show, and have great confidence in the four members of our tour staff who take the troupe out on the road all summer. The KIDS program is truly blessed with a talented and dedicated staff. In this issue, you will find information about the new troupe and tour, a gallery of fun photos related to KIDS comings and goings, fascinating updates on various KIDS alumni, and an introduction to our newest Board member. I hope you will join us for our premier performance and season-opening fund-raiser, held this year at Divine Savior Holy Angels High School on Sunday, June 24. Call 414/266-7067 for more information and to make a reservation. I’ve recently had conversations with executive directors and development directors for several different organizations in the non-profit sector. These are not easy times for non-profit organizations, and perhaps even more difficult for arts-related organizations like the KIDS. I do not take for granted how unusual it is for us to have stayed alive for nearly 40 years! You may be wondering how you could help us continue to stay in business and to thrive even more. Let me offer three suggestions: 1) come to several shows this summer! Nothing supports the KIDS program more tangibly than packed houses all over the region. 2) consider bringing the KIDS to your community. Sponsor a show! Our tour schedule still has a handful of open dates. Sponsoring a show is a rewarding and challenging endeavor, well worth the effort. 3) If you haven’t already done so, consider making the KIDS a part of your charitable giving. I make a small contribution every month, and it gives me great satisfaction to do so. Every KIDS supporter makes a difference and keeps the 39-year tradition of the KIDS from Wisconsin alive and well! Be sure to check out our website from time to time with updates on our tour schedule and other KIDS information: www.kidsfromwisconsin.com. Mark S. Dorn Producer Special thanks to Liz Ofte, who served us so well last summer as our Tour Assistant. Liz’s good humor, dedication to the KIDS program, and commitment to professionalism and excellence set her apart as a fine member of our tour staff. Liz will be getting married this summer and moving on to the next chapter in her life. Thanks, Liz! 3 Introducing . . . . . the 2007 Dan Bader Trumpet Green Bay Bryce Bielec Trombone Eau Claire Allison Boyle Alto Singer/Dancer Marshfield Cameron Chase Bass Singer/Dancer Sun Prairie John Dobbratz Baritone Singer/Dancer Mayville Sarah Ellis Soprano Singer/Dancer Platteville Kelly Eshbaugh Bass Trombone Greenfield Josh Fuchs Trumpet Lancaster Evan Garry Tenor Singer/Dancer Lodi Joshua Gibbs Bass Singer/Dancer Waukesha Matt Gillespie Tenor Singer/Dancer Appleton Elizabeth Heth Keyboards Mineral Point Joe Holtan Bass Singer/Dancer Port Washington Jane Jarvis Bass Guitar Green Bay Nick Jelich Trumpet Oconomowoc Sarah Larson Alto Singer/Dancer Milwaukee Kevin Maher Percussioin Oconomowoc Brad Kish Tenor Singer/Dancer Sun Prairie 4 Jenny Kruger Alto Singer/Dancer Mayville Nick La Muro Percussion Fort Atkinson KIDS from Wisconsin Joel Meyer Bass Singer/Dancer Kenosha Justin Nellis Keyboards Sturgeon Bay Mike O'Connor Guitar Monona Krista Porchetta Soprano Singer/Dancer Middleton Torrie Rinehart Alto Singer/Dancer La Crosse Kelsey Schmitz Soprano Singer/Dancer Green Bay Eric Schultz Woodwinds Green Bay Kristen Steel Soprano Singer/Dancer Green Bay AJ Vanden Heuval Tenor Singer/Dancer Kaukauna Brittany White Alto Singer/Dancer Lancaster Jesus Zalapa Tenor Singer/Dancer Madison Mandy Rieck Trumpet Oconomowoc Courtney Toepel Soprano Singer/Dancer Kiel CAMP ALTERNATES Krystina Andreoli - Kenosha Nate Gilanyi - Burlington Lindsey Graff - Rice Lake Alex Odya-Weis - Milwaukee Kelsey Kornaus - Brussels Cameron Meilicke - Brookfield Emma Van Ommeren - Lake Mills Matt Zblewski - Hatley 5 ALUMNI NEWS Michael Bettine (1973), former KIDS percussionist, is located in Milwaukee where he teaches beginning and advanced percussion students. She comes to us as a representative of the Wisconsin State Fair. Susan believes in the important role the KIDS play in the overall entertainment at the Fair and acknowledges that fairgoers come each year to see their show. A background in dance study and some choreographic experience makes her involvement in the KIDS organization especially enjoyable. Susan joined We Energies nearly five years ago. She is currently Agriculture Program Manager and PSC contact for Customer Generation. Her varied management responsibilities include both gas and electric agriculture customers and programs associated with this customer group. She is also involved in renewable energy and conservation projects. Before joining We Energies she was the Fluid Products Manager at Foremost Farms USA. Susan holds a BS in Business Administration from Cardinal Stritch University and a MBA from Marquette University. Before a career change she was a Registered Nurse. She is committed to Agriculture, and especially the Dairy Industry. She serves on multiple Ag related boards including Wisconsin 4-H Foundation, Midwest Rural Energy Council, Town of Brighton Zoning and Planning Commission and the Wisconsin State Fair Park Board which she serves as First Vice Chair.
