The 2010 United Way of the Southern Tier annual fundraising campaign celebrates a return to positive growth this year – and what a remarkable achievement that is! Thanks to your collective effort, we expect the total amount raised this year to top $4.45 million – a 1.1 percent increase over 2009. This result and the support of the local community deserve all our praise and a healthy dose of perspective. Consider where the nation and local economy have been since the housing and financial markets collapsed in the fall of 2008, triggering the most severe economic crisis in America since the Great Depression. These events have had historic consequences on tens of millions of Americans, including thousands of people right here in the Southern Tier. And yet when it comes to people helping others when things get tough ... there’s no other community I’d rather live in than this one. Think about this … The previous economic recession to confront our nation began in late 2000 and was profoundly impacted by the disaster of September 11, 2001. United Ways across the county, big and small, experienced material losses in their respective campaigns. Many, including United Way of the Southern Tier, went several years before seeing growth in their campaigns. While devastating and horrific were those events some 10 years ago, on an economic scale they pale in comparison to the recent recession. Your loyalty to United Way of the Southern Tier has propelled us to positive growth just one year following what many now describe as the Great Recession. Again, I say ... there is no other place I’d rather be than here in the Southern Tier alongside people who truly care about others – especially when the need to help is greatest! On behalf of the staff and leadership of United Way, thank you for your remarkable commitment to an exceptional community. Stephen M. Hughes Vice President of Resource Development A celebration of YOU In December, United Way hosted its annual celebration to thank those who make campaign success possible – YOU! CCCS is a non-profit organization that offers financial counseling, budget planning and debt repayment assistance to families across New York State. Most services are free, regardless of income level. Although these services have been available to residents of Chemung and Steuben counties in the past, United Way has joined forces with CCCS to help residents find out about these services and to provide financial information that can help all families, not just CCCS clients. CCCS currently offers monthly appointments at Cornell Cooperative Extension in Elmira, and United Way is making plans to offer space for regular appointments in Steuben County as well. As part of this collaboration, United Way will periodically share financial tips with you via e-mail, newsletters, Facebook and Twitter. Please share this information with your co-workers, family and friends. More information about CCCS is available through 2-1-1 Helpline. Dial 2-1-1 or (800) 346-2211.
