Case Study: Commerzbank Frankfurt am Main, Germany City: Country: Product: Architect: Curtain Walling Company: Frankfurt Germany Dow Corning® 795 Silicone Sealant Sir Norman Foster (UK) Metallbau Wenker – Gronau The Project: ● Currently the tallest building in Europe at nearly 300 metres tall this is said to be the world‘s first ‘ecological high-rise’ ● Interior wall glazing with invisible structural glazing fixation, fitted flush to the frames, concealing most of the buildings m&e services ● The units have to be easily demountable to allow access to m&e plant ● The glazing systems with the glass sitting flush in the frames was realised using Dow Corning 795 for bonding the glass to the aluminium frames. The Project The Challenge • One of the landmarks of the high-rise centre of Frankfurt, the Commerzbank Tower is currently the tallest building in Europe. The striking exterior with its curving corner is topped by a mast which brings the building to nearly 300 metres tall. • A triangular atrium rises through the entire building from the ground floor, divided by glass partitions. The atrium opens to the exterior wall at different levels, forming 9 large gardens. • Said to be the world‘s first ‘ecological high-rise’, the building, offices are primarily naturally ventilated with topup cooling and mechanical ventilation available. • The building uses no traditional air conditioning - at least for 60% of the year - in favour of natural ventilation, cutting fuel consumption and ensuring the building‘s green credentials. • To achieve interior wall glazing with invisible structural glazing fixation, fitted flush to the frames. • Since this interior glazing was designed to conceal most of the buildings m&e services the units needed to be easily a quickly demountable to allow installation, maintenance and repair of the pipework and wiring behind. The Solution • The glazing systems with the glass sitting flush in the frames was realised using Dow Corning 795 for bonding the glass to the aluminium frames. Dow Corning 795 Silicone Building Sealant is a one-part, non-sagging silicone material that cures to a medium modulus silicone rubber upon exposure to atmospheric moisture.
