Ukrainian Culture
Floods Vegreville Pysanka Festival
ll things Ukrainian descended on Vegreville
last weekend as the
Vegreville Cultural Association
hosted the 43rd annual Pysanka Festival and there was no
shortage of events to soak up.
The weekend long celebrations got underway on Friday,
July 1 as the Pioneer Village
offered a glimpse into the early lives of many Ukrainian settlers with a blacksmith display,
outdoor bread and rope making, stone milling and leather
working. Demonstrations were
performed each day through to
Sunday.
In the Vegreville arena visitors were able to trace their
Ukrainian roots with the assistance of experts providing
regional maps and archived information from various villages
and town of the old Ukraine.
The Yarmarok trade show
provided the opportunity to
browse through hundreds of
authentic and replica Ukrainian items and clothing from numerous vendors. The Vegreville
Social Centre was filled with
traditional Ukrainian folk art
featuring costumes worn during
various eras by different social
levels within the culture. Also
in the Social Centre was Prairie Catering who offered hungry
festival goers the chance to enjoy Ukrainian as well as western cuisine.
The grand opening ceremonies brought with it the traditional dances and colours of
the Ukraine through a number
of dance performances from a
number of Ukrainian dance
groups from the area including the Privit, a traditional
dance to welcome the crowd, as
performed by members of the
Vegreville School of Ukrainian
Dance.
The crowded grandstand of
people was also treated to a performance from the A.L. Horton
Bilingual students who sang
songs in their native Ukrainian
language. In their final performance of the opening ceremonies the students sang a tribute
to their teacher Mrs. Larissa
Bombak who is retiring from
the school after 35 years.
A number of officials gave
their remarks and congratulations to the festival including
Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs
who said, “Today we celebrate
from coast-to-coast-to-coast our
Canadian history and how fortunate we are to be Canadians.
Today we also celebrate our
Ukrainian community, marking the 125th anniversary of
Ukrainian immigrants to Canada.”
Also welcoming those in the
grand stand were Fort Saskatchewan MLA Jessica Littlewood, Town of Vegreville Mayor
Myron Hayduk and County of
Minburn Reeve Roger Konieczny before the official festival
got underway for the three-day
event.
Each evening featured grandstand music hosted by former
CISN FM radio host Damian
Rudiak, which featured famed

Festival was Town of Mundare Mayor Charlie Gargus and his wife Debby.
Lyudmyla Shefee had a display of authentic Ukrainian dresses. Some belong to her
private museum collection but offered some of the pieces for sale at the Vegreville
Pysanka Festival. With some of the dresses being over 120 years old, each of the items
represented each of the various regions of the Ukraine.

he Ranfurly Seniors enjoyed the
‘Seniors Tour and Tea’ at the
provincial Legislature on June 8.
We arrived at the federal building at
10 a.m. where we were served a delicious tea with assorted squares, tarts,
cookies, scones and fresh seasonal fruit.
The tea was a special blend of green
and black teas with a touch of citrus.
We were then treated to a ‘welcome
message’ from Al Chapman, manager
of Visitor Services.
After tea we enjoyed a guided tour of
the federal building special exhibitions
of the political past, the Suffrage Movement in Alberta, historical events of the
years and the Borealis Gallery. Then
we moved over to the Legislature and
the Visitors’ Gallery, seeing first hand
where our MLA’s sit and manage the
business of the Alberta Government.
In the Chambers there is a beautiful
stained glass window depicting Princess
Louise Alberta carrying a sheaf of wheat
with the mountains in the background.
People are welcome to visit the Legislature, free at any time.
Our final meeting for the year will be
on Tuesday, June 23 and 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

O
n Thursday, June 30 the Mannville Fire Department and Vermilion RCMP

Farm Wife Diaries –
What’s In a Wave?
R
By Deb Barber
ecently on the drive from her
house to ours Miss Bug and I
encountered drivers of a friendly persuasion cheerfully waving to us
as our vehicles passed on the gravelled
roads. With those crystal blue eyes fastened on me and with the inquisitiveness
of a five year old she asked; “Nama why
does everyone wave differently?” She
then proceeded to demonstrate the full
hand wave, the two finger wave, an index finger wave and finally the famous
shooting at you action wave. I thought
for a moment and advised her that I really didn’t know and that I have actually
pondered the same question at different
points in time.
After our visit, sitting down at my
trusty computer I went to that all knowing place called Google and typed in the
question; how did waving originate? The
answer didn’t really surprise me; it appears it is ‘thought’ that waving originated for a couple of reasons. The first being
as a means of attracting someone’s attention or a way of catching someone’s eye
and the second suggested meaning was
to indicate you are coming in peace with
no weapon in hand. One search site even
suggested that at one time it was used by
the village ‘look’ out to halt strangers so
that they could be questioned as to the
nature of their business.
According to the reliable source called
the Internet the origins of the two finger
wave evolved from ‘bikers’; it came into
play due to the restriction of their racing
gloves and apparently the need for the
remaining fingers to be kept in place on
the clutch and front brakes. Other sources say it’s just a modified peace sign or a
different slant on the two fingered salute
which when touched to the brim of one’s
hat was done to indicate honor.
After using extreme caution in the
wording the ‘only’ appropriate response
to the question inquiring what a waving
‘index’ finger means is it’s a wave used to
acknowledge the friendship or acquaintance to an approaching driver ‘without’
removing ones hands from the required
ten and two steering wheel hand positions!! I’m sure that’s the proper explanation because we all know that we drive
with our hands in this correct position
fearful to remove them for any reason!!
And lastly the famous gun finger
wave; at best the internet suggests it
could mean anything from ‘gotcha’ to
‘right on’ or ‘I have my eye on you’. This
one probably is meant to be interpreted
on a situation to situation basis but in
our local area isn’t meant as a threat
but rather as just another neighbourly
gesture.
After all my research I think I’m going
to wait a year or to until I tackle undertaking further discussion with Miss Bug
on this topic!
One of the evils of Google is how one
simple little search can cause me to deviate into territories I never would have
normally travelled. Reading about the
origins of waving naturally lead to reading what other ‘gestures’ mean in various countries. And since this is a family
publication I will stay on the straight
and narrow pathway! Our commonly
used ‘thumbs up’ gesture in certain parts
of the Middle East is considered highly
offensive. The ‘come here’ gesture most
commonly used by Mother’s on wayward children could get one arrested in
the Philippines and in Asia should only
be used to summons a dog to your side.
Even our innocent “OK” symbol is considered rude in Brazil. After all my research I’ve decided if we ever travel out
of country I’m just sitting with my hands
clasp in my lap and my feet flat on the
ground and pray that isn’t offensive to
anyone!
On the home front; a word to the wise
for you farm hubbies; when you see your
wife in the midst of a garden filled with
more weeds than vegetables it is probably not wise to make the comment that
she will ‘never’ get the weeds in the garden under constraint! Because if your
wife is anything like me she’s probably
already questioning her ability to bring
the over whelming situation under control and by making such a comment you
are in fact challenging her. By doing so
you could be jeopardizing having meals
appear on the table at their scheduled
intervals and most likely you will have
severely damaged any chance of finding
that ‘pie’ you were hankering appearing
on the counter cooling for dessert.

Spring Creek Cemetery
gathered on June 26 at the
resting place of many pioneer
families to honour them with a
special unveiling of a commemorative bench and directory
plaque with the names of those
buried there.
Committee member Dianne
Saskiw said that after the
maintenance of the cemetery
had fallen to the way-side, a
committee was formed approximately ten years ago to upgrade the property by getting
the grass under control, and installing a sign and fence around
the perimeter to protect the sacred site.
Father Don Bodnar was in
attendance and gave the blessings of the bench and directory and also blessed graves for
those requesting his visit to
each of the graves.
During the blessing of the
memorial plaque Father Don
read each of the names of those
buried and commended the
work of the cemetery committee
for their work in installing the
directory. He encouraged every-
one to bring their children and
grandchildren to the cemetery
to carry on with honouring and
remembering the loved ones
buried there.
Committee member Dianne
Saskiw said many of the old
tombstones were written in
Ukrainian and family members
were finding it difficult to locate
the graves of their family members. The names were translated to English and then listed on
the directory plaque making it
easier for visitors to locate the
graves of the family members.

it was necessary to remember

acquie Fenske has been busy working on a new venture and recently held a
‘Franks on the Farm’ event to officially launch her Chicks And Chaps’ line
of mustards and mayo recipes. The items will carry the Chicks And Chaps
label, and at the event she offered friends and family members a chance to sample
each of them and offer their opinion. Honey mustard, grainy beer, horseradish dill
and horseradish mayo were the four flavours up for scrutiny. The products are
nearly ready for market and will be available for purchase this summer.

Ukraine violinist Oleksandr Bozhyk
as he played multiple fiddles simultaneously, Ukraine soloist Marianna
Ilkiv, the bands Millenia and Euphoria along with numerous dance and
musical groups from Vegreville and
aboard.
The evenings of the festival played
host to the exciting Zabavas in the
Multiplex with sounds from a number
of previous and new acts.
Each year the festival appoints a
Hospodar and Hospodynia (host and
hostess) for the event and this year
was none other than Town of Mundare Mayor Charlie Gargus and his
wife Debby. Alongside his mayoral
duties, Charlie and Debby volunteer
on a number of committees and organizations and have also organized a
one-day workshop for Ukrainian music for ten years. Charlie Gargus was
also the 2015 recipient of the Lifetime
Achievement award at the Ukrainian
National Festival in Dauphin, Manitoba, and Debby was a recipient of the
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in
2012.
Vegreville has proven time and time
again that it can host the best that
Ukrainian culture can offer and drew
crowds from across Canada. Organizers say they are already planning next
year’s event which they are hoping to
prove to be bigger and better than this
year.

Lavoy Host Canada Day Parade And Supper
he streets of
Lavoy were lined
with
parade
watchers as the annual Canada Day parade
made its way through
the hamlet. Floats,
horses and old vehicles
and tractors drove the
streets throwing candy
to excited children. Following the afternoon parade a supper was held
at the community hall
for diners to cool down
and enjoy a steak with
all the fixings and side
dishes. Pictured here is
Trifin Newchuk as he
led the parade on his
black horse, proudly carrying the Canadian flag.
Clark Jackson had his three-horse unicorn hitch pulling the Workhorse
Oilfield Services wagon in Lavoy on July 1. Unicorn hitches are not
always a common site on parade routes and he was thanked for the entry
with a round of applause from parade watchers.
Local auctioneer Dale Menzak had his team pull the ‘Haying In The 30s’
wagon in the Lavoy Canada Day parade.
