Captain James Cook is justly famous for his explorations of the southern Pacific
Ocean, but the exploration of the northern Pacific and the Arctic are equally significant. On his third and final great voyage, Cook surveyed the northwest American
coast, hoping to find the legendary Northwest Passage. While dreams of a passage
proved illusory, Cook’s journey produced some of the finest charts, collections, and
anthropological observations of his career. It also helped establish British relations
with Russia and opened the door to the hugely influential maritime fur trade.
This collection of essays from an international and interdisciplinary group
of scholars—including former Vancouver Maritime Museum executive director
James P. Delgado; Canada’s pre-eminent naval historian, Barry Gough; Richard
Inglis, former head of anthropology at the Royal British Columbia Museum;
and University of Alberta historian I.S. MacLaren—uses artifacts, charts, and
records of the encounters between Native peoples and explorers to tell the story of
this remarkable voyage. The book also provides new insights into Cook’s legacy
and his influence on subsequent expeditions in the Pacific Northwest. Finally,
the collection uses Cook’s voyage as a springboard to consider the promise and
challenge of the “new North” today, demonstrating its importance as a meeting
place of political, cultural, economic, and environmental forces.
James K. Barnett is the author of Captain Cook in Alaska and the North Pacific and coeditor of Enlightenment and Exploration in the North Pacific, 1741–1805.
David L. Nicandri is the author of River of Promise: Lewis and Clark on the Columbia and
the former director of the Washington State Historical Society.
Robin Inglis is a fellow of the Canadian Museums Association and author of the Historical Dictionary of the Discovery and Exploration of the Northwest Coast of America. He has
served as research curator for the exhibition Arctic Ambitions: Captain Cook and the Northwest Passage for the Anchorage Museum and the Washington State Historical Society.

Jayne Seagrave—author of the bestselling Camping British Columbia and Yukon—is
back with a book that only an avid camper with children could write. Camping with
Kids in the West: BC and Alberta’s Best Family Campgrounds is the definitive guide for
parents who want to introduce their children to the wonders of nature and create family memories that will last a lifetime.
With over fifteen years of camping experience with her own two children, both
now in their teens, Jayne is an expert on the fine art of family camping. Camping with
Kids in the West includes practical information about twenty-five of the best familyfriendly national and provincial campgrounds—from Alice Lake and Shuswap Lake
in BC to the Bow Valley and Dinosaur National Park in Alberta. All campgrounds
listed are easily accessible by car or RV, are relatively close to amenities like grocery
stores and medical services, and come with recreational opportunities for all ages and
skill levels. Speaking from her vast personal experience and meticulous research, Jayne
addresses the wonderful benefits (and potential challenges) of camping with kids of
every age—from toddlers to tweens to teens.
Born in the UK, Jayne Seagrave immigrated to Canada in the late 1980s and soon discovered
a love of camping. Since becoming parents in 1999, Jayne and her husband have taken their
two sons on trips to over one hundred campsites in BC, Alberta, and Yukon. Jayne is the
author of the hugely popular guidebook Camping British Columbia and Yukon: A Complete
Guide to National, Provincial, and Territorial Campgrounds. She holds a Ph.D. in criminology
and divides her time between writing; working as the marketing manager of the Vancouver
Tool Corporation (vancouvertool.com), the business she started with her husband; and
speaking on innovation and the home-improvement industry (jayneseagrave.com).

To the Lighthouse
An Explorer’s Guide to the Island Lighthouses
of Southwestern BC
Peter Johnson and John Walls
Photography by Richard Paddle
Foreword by Senator Pat Carney (Ret.)
Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands are home to over two dozen active lighthouses. For over a century, these coastal beacons have guided ships through the fog and represented hope for countless mariners. Today, the lighthouses on BC’s southern islands
are ideal destinations for day trippers and coastal explorers of all ages who are looking
for historical sites in spectacular maritime settings.
To the Lighthouse: An Explorer’s Guide to the Island Lighthouses of Southwestern BC
offers a comprehensive and fascinating look at these remarkable landmarks, blending practical information on location and accessibility with riveting facts, local lore,
and gorgeous photography. From Fisgard Lighthouse, a National Historic Site at the
mouth of Esquimalt Harbour, to the remote west-coast sentinels of Cape Beale and
Pachena Point, and from the isolated Cape Mudge beacon on Quadra Island to the
community-supported restoration project at Sheringham Point on southern Vancouver
Island, this book celebrates a unique culture of public service passed down through
generations. To the Lighthouse is a travelling companion like no other.
Peter Johnson is an educator and an author of three previous books: Quarantined: Life and
Death at William Head Station, 1872–1959; Glyphs and Gallows: The Rock Art of Clo-oose
and the Wreck of the John Bright; and Voyages of Hope: The Saga of the Bride-Ships.
John Walls is director of the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society and the
author of Celebrating Victoria.

At the end of the nineteenth century, Canada’s Prairies were still sparsely populated.
Crimes such as horse theft, random murders, and prison escapes were the order
of the day, and the North West Mounted Police continued to rely on their horses,
their contacts, and their wits to apprehend the culprits. By the mid-1930s, a sea
change in technology and police science had changed the game. Major advances in
transportation, communications, and sleuthing techniques made crime-solving a new
art—but the criminals also had access to the new ways.
The US had Bonnie and Clyde, and John Dillinger, but Canada had its fair share
of bad apples committing equally vicious crimes: a serial rapist and strangler who
most often chose female proprietors of rooming houses as his victims; a father-andson murder team, tracked by an enterprising detective all the way to Kentucky; and a
group of murderous youths who sparked a manhunt across two provinces and a bloody
shootout resulting in the deaths of four policemen. These stories offer an intriguing
look at the skill, determination, and bravery of Prairie law enforcers as they risked
their all to bring ruthless outlaws to justice.
Art Downs (1924–1996) was a writer, editor, historian, and pioneer of BC book and magazine
publishing. Born in England, he moved to Saskatchewan as a young child and later settled
in Quesnel, BC. He became owner of the Cariboo Digest, which evolved into BC Outdoors,
a successful magazine about BC history, wildlife, and conservation. In 1969, Art and his wife,
Doris, established Heritage House Publishing.

THE LUCK OF THE K ARLUK
Shipwrecked in the Arctic
L.D. Cross
When the members of Canada’s First Arctic Expedition set out from Victoria aboard
hmcs Karluk in the summer of 1913, it was a moment of great optimism. The threeyear mission would chart unexplored land masses of the western Arctic and secure
Canada’s place in the international geographic community. Little did the team of
distinguished scholars and scientists realize, however, how their hopes would soon be
brought to ruin. Just a few months into the journey, the vessel became lodged in heavy
ice, eventually sinking near the coast of Siberia.
With little polar experience among them but ample supplies salvaged from the
wreck, the group of castaways slowly made their way to solid ground on desolate
Wrangel Island. There they would wait while the ship’s captain and an Inuk guide
embarked on a heroic 1,100-kilometre trek along the Siberian coast in search of help.
By the end of the fifteen-month saga, eleven members of the original expedition would
perish from frostbite and sickness, while the remaining twenty would survive to tell
the tale. The Luck of the Karluk is a fascinating story about an important episode in
Canada’s history and a revealing study of the strengths and weaknesses of human nature
under treacherous conditions.
L.D. (Dyan) Cross is an Ottawa writer and member of the Professional Writers Association
of Canada, the Canadian Authors Association, and the Creative Non-Fiction Collective. Her
business and lifestyle articles have appeared in The Globe and Mail and in magazines such
as Weddingbells, Home Business Report, Legion Magazine, Profit Magazine, enRoute, and

Association of Business Communicators, the EXCEL Awards for features and editorial

Fields of Conflict—Germany, 1945
John Wilson
“A masterful storyteller.”—The Globe and Mail
As a boy growing up in Germany during Hitler’s rise to power, Dieter has been seduced
by the pomp and circumstance of war. But as global hostilities intensify, he is called
upon to fight for his country in a conflict that he doesn’t fully understand. Now he
must run from everything he knows. With most of his family dead, Berlin in ruins,
and the Russian army closing in, Dieter can no longer naively cling to his childhood
beliefs. The world he is facing is brutal, dirty, and unforgiving. And the most he can
hope for is a chance to survive.
In this second instalment of Wandering Fox’s Fields of Conflict series, John Wilson
brings history to life for young readers ages twelve and up.

Stones of time
The Shenanigans Series, Book Two
Andreas Oertel
“A fun, engaging series for adventure and history buffs.”—Quill & Quire
In their last adventure, Cody, Eric, and Rachel were clever enough to fool townspeople
with a homemade “ancient Egyptian” tablet. Their exploits brought some much-needed
tourism to Sultana, Manitoba, but their deception ensured they would spend the summer
doing community service. While mowing the grass in the local cemetery, they stumble
across some ancient stones that seem to indicate this was a sacred site long before the
arrival of European settlers. All of a sudden, they find themselves on a rescue mission
in a world beyond their imagination. Will their quick thinking and knack for history
be enough to get them home? Modern-day adventure and ancient civilizations meet in
Book Two of the Shenanigans series.
Andreas Oertel was born in Germany and has lived most of his life in eastern Manitoba.
He holds degrees from the University of Manitoba and the British Columbia Institute of
Technology and has a lifelong passion for archaeology, ancient civilizations, and writing,
especially for young people. Learn more at andreasoertel.com.

If you live like me
Lori Weber
“Lori Weber captivates her readers and keeps them entranced.”—CM Magazine
Before her plane even touches down in Newfoundland, Cheryl is already plotting her
escape. She knows life on this rock will be no better than it was in the other places
she’s been forced to live ever since her parents launched their cross-Canada tour. The
unwilling spectator of her father’s morbid fascination with “dying cultures,” Cheryl
has seen more than her fair share of towns so depressing they could haunt your dreams.
His decision to study the defunct fishing industry in St. John’s is Cheryl’s breaking
point—this city girl is more determined than ever to get back to the concrete, the
buzz, and the bright lights of Montreal. Will Cheryl’s cold, goth exterior and her
refusal to embrace a new life cut her off from those who love her?

Shirlee Smith Matheson
“Matheson has been rightly hailed for her appreciation of the prairie landscape and her
ability to capture the rhythm and swing of a young girl’s thoughts.”—Calgary Herald
The sequel to Shirlee Smith Matheson’s critically acclaimed Prairie Pictures follows
the main character, Sherri, as she is uprooted once again and forced to adjust to life in
Calgary and get ready to start at yet another new school. Sherri is thrilled to instantly
make a new friend in Sam, the girl next door. A year older than Sherri, Sam is happy
to show Sherri how to dress and behave. Eager to fit in, Sherri follows Sam’s lead until
she discovers that appearances can be deceiving. Sometimes, it is hard to tell what is
genuine from what is phony.
Shirlee Smith Matheson was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, but has lived in over twenty
different communities. Her own experiences of making new friends and leaving familiar
things behind inform many of her stories. Shirlee is an alumna of the Banff Centre’s writing
program and has published award-winning fiction and non-fiction books for adults and

A PURPOSE RIDDEN
Ryan Correy
In the summer of 1996, a father and his 13-year-old son embarked on a 3400 km bicycle
tour across Canada. Affectionately known as “Manhood Training,” this unique bonding experience became the inspiration for Ryan Correy to break away from convention
and turn a passion for cycling into his purpose in life.
A Purpose Ridden is an honest and often obsessive first-hand account of becoming one of Canada’s most respected adventure cyclists. Ryan shares in great detail the
sponsorship woes, the evolution of his ego, an admiration for flawed role model Lance
Armstrong, the many accolades earned, family tragedy and, of course, the evolving
relationship with his father, their fights, and friendships lost along the way.
The path less travelled begins with a paternal taunt: “We’re close enough to home.
If you want, we can call your mother to come and pick you up now.”
Ryan Correy is an Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership graduate who has taken on many of
the world’s toughest cycling challenges, including a 25,000 km tour from Alaska to Argentina;
the grueling 4828 km Race Across America; the 4418 km of remote mountain terrain on
the Tour Divide; and a crippling 6 day, 20 hour stationary cycling World Record attempt.
In between planning his next adventure, Ryan regularly speaks to groups of athletes about
endurance and how to turn passion into purpose. He also serves as the Fueling Guru for
Hammer Nutrition Canada—giving advice to amateur and professional athletes alike. Ryan
lives in Burlington, Ontario, with his equally ambitious girlfriend, Sarah.

A YOUTH WASTED
CLIMBING
David Chaundy-Smart
David Chaundy-Smart took it as a compliment when his high school vice-principal
told him he was wasting his youth by climbing. Here, he tells the story of how he
and his brother, Reg, spent the last years of the 1970s fighting suburban boredom
to become, in the words of renowned climbing historian Chic Scott, “one of the
leading figures in Ontario rock climbing throughout the 1980s.”
With its vivid accounts of short and nasty climbs, dubious mentors, hapless
climbing partners, teenage crushes, bad cars, underage drinking and questionable
climbing techniques, this is a memoir of coming of age in a simpler era of climbing, told with compassion, humour and insight.

THE REAL THING
The Natural History of Ian McTaggart Cowan
Briony Penn
During his academic career, Ian McTaggart Cowan stepped outside the narrow confines of academia to pioneer nature television. His television programs in the 1950s
and ’60s, Fur and Feathers, The Web of Life and The Living Sea, made him a household name around the world by capturing the first microscopic organisms on TV and
bringing a live moose into the studio. He was also responsible for hiring a young David
Suzuki, who followed in his nature-show-host footsteps.
The Real Thing is the first official biography of Ian McTaggart Cowan (1910–2010),
the “father of Canadian ecology.” Authorized by his family and with the research support and participation of the University of Victoria Libraries, Briony Penn provides
an unprecedented and accessible window into the story of this remarkable naturalist. From his formative years roaming the mountains around Vancouver looking for
venison to his last years finishing the voluminous and authoritative Birds of British
Columbia, Cowan’s life provides a unique perspective on a century of environmental
change—with a critical message for the future.
Illustrated throughout with colour and black-and-white photos from all aspects of
Cowan’s life, The Real Thing takes the reader on an adventurous and inspirational journey through the heart of North American ecology, wilderness, landscape and wonder.
Briony Penn has spent the last twenty-two years working as an award-winning newspaper
and magazine columnist/illustrator, having published over 400 columns on natural/cultural
history in regional newspapers and magazines, including “Wild Side” for Monday Magazine
and “Natural Relations” for Focus. She received a Western Magazine Award for Best Columnist and Feature Writer, won the Silver Environment Educator Award at the Canadian
Environmental Awards and was nominated for best North American columnist in alternative
weeklies. She lives on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia.

When Nathalie Chambers and her husband, Dave, first took over Madrona Farm, a
local plot of land with a deep history, they never thought the business of small-scale
agriculture would become an international political act. In time, however, they found
that the mere act of planting, cultivating, harvesting and selling locally produced food
was considered by many to be revolutionary and by some to be an act of rebellion that
needed to be bound up in red tape.
Saving Farmland introduces readers to stories of lost farmland; of bees saving lives;
of sustainability, ecosystems and activism; lessons for overcoming obstacles, choosing models, identifying vital farmland, building community, and fundraising; and
successful examples of regained farmland, international land trusts and heroes for
ongoing inspiration.
Filled with farming stories from the past and present and brimming with fascinating facts, Saving Farmland is a practical treatise to help us all support local farming
and sustainable land development and indulge in good eating—forever.
Nathalie Chambers has a diploma in Restoration Ecology from the University of Victoria
and has studied Conservation Finance at Yale University. She is the founder of both the Chef
Survival Challenge Inc., a fundraising event that channels proceeds to farmland conservation, and the Big Dream Farm Fund, which directs funds towards farmland acquisition and
sustainable farming education initiatives. Nathalie and her husband, David Chambers, live
and work on Madrona Farm, where they grow more than a hundred varieties of produce
year-round for over 4,000 regular customers, including numerous wholesalers and local restaurants. Nathalie is mother to two kids, Sage and Lola, and lives in Victoria, BC.
Robin Alys Roberts has written articles and contributed to books, ezines, websites and
conference presentations on justice and equal rights. Her love of gardening, good food and
democracy sprouted her desire to contribute to Saving Farmland. She lives in Victoria, BC.
Sophie Wooding has a degree in creative writing and English literature from the University of
Victoria. She apprenticed at Madrona Farm surrounding a stint at GoodRoots, a Community
Sustained Agriculture Farm near her hometown of Langley, BC. Sophie lives in Victoria, BC.

TOD INLET
A Healing Place
Gwen Curry
Tod Inlet has been a place of refuge for hundreds, if not thousands, of years, but
few are aware of its history. This tiny fjord, less than a half hour from downtown
Victoria, is part of Gowlland/Tod Provincial Park and is accessed by a forested
path beside Tod Creek. For centuries it was the home of the WSÁNEĆ (Saanich)
people, providing everything for their spiritual and material sustenance. In the
early part of the twentieth century a small company town grew on its shores.
Houses, a railway, a clay mill, a factory and a dock for steamships were built
for the Vancouver Portland Cement Company. When the cement company had
exhausted the limestone quarries, Jennie Butchart began her ambitious cultivation project, Butchart Gardens. Developers made plans for marinas, golf courses
and hotels to be built on this quiet inlet, but local citizens, environmentalists,
scientists and Native people fought back.
Almost all the buildings have been demolished, but concrete and iron are not
easily disposed of, and reminders of the past confront the walker everywhere:
shell middens spill into the sea, fruit trees and garden flowers mingle with indigenous plants, and century-old industrial relics litter the creek, the forest and
the Inlet. But despite the ravages of the past century, Tod Inlet retains a spirit of
peace and renewal. In other environments this clash of the man-made with the
natural can create an unsettling mix. Here, time has allowed nature to begin the
healing and has morphed into a present that speaks softly of its past.
Gwen Curry is an artist and former professor of Fine Arts at the University of Victoria.
She has been involved in many exhibitions in Canada and abroad and had several
catalogues devoted to her work. Her media has included prints, works on paper, sculpture and installations. Environmental issues and the juxtaposition of word and image
have been hallmarks of her work. She is well travelled and has enjoyed several adventurous journeys. She lives in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia.

Having sold more than 40,000 copies of previous editions, this authoritative climbing
guide has been completely revised, updated and redesigned for a whole new generation
of mountaineers.
Armed with first-hand information, Alan Kane describes over 150 scrambles
in a clear, concise format featuring colour photos and maps. You’ll find complete
information here on equipment needed, when to go, how to get there, where to park
and what to expect as you work your way to the summit. Photos showing the ascent
line complement descriptions that include historical trivia, origins of placenames, and
summit views. Routes range from off-trail treks suitable for strong hikers to challenging
ascents at the low end of technical climbing where use of specific handholds is required
on steep, airy terrain. Most ascents are day trips from a major road; many utilize a
hiking trail on approach and include some of the most photographed Rockies postcard
peaks. The scramble areas begin in Waterton Park near the US border and continue
north through Crowsnest, Kananaskis, Canmore and into the contiguous mountain
parks of Banff, Yoho, Kootenay and Jasper. An overview of facilities, accommodation
and climate is provided for each area. Specific hazards from rock quality to wildlife
encounters are also covered, including advice on scrambling safely.
Alan Kane was born in Banff, Alberta, and grew up in Golden, British Columbia. In 1991
RMB published his original Scrambles guidebook, which to this day is almost solely responsible for the widespread popularity of non-technical mountain ascents, or scrambles, out
West. When he isn’t hiking or scrambling, Alan may be found wandering along streams
pursuing his other passion, fly-fishing. Alan is married to his very tolerant wife, Diana, and
lives in Calgary, Alberta.

7th Edition
John Martin and Jon Jones
Sport Climbs in the Canadian Rockies, with over 15,000 copies of previous editions
sold, returns with a new, completely revised, updated and redesigned seventh edition.
Sport Climbs continues to be the quintessential guidebook that both local and
visiting climbers reach for when travelling to Western Canada. Featuring over 2,300
routes located throughout the Bow Valley, including climbs at Banff, Canmore, Lake
Louise, Kananaskis Country and the Ghost River area, this new edition features eight
new areas, 500 new routes, the latest updates, full-colour maps and photos, and over
300 marked topos. All routes include difficulty classifications and are completely indexed, including first-ascent information.
John Martin, a Calgary native, is an environmental consultant and the author of 13 climbing
guides. He has been climbing in the Rockies since 1963 and developing sport routes there
since 1983. John lives in Calgary, Alberta.
Jon Jones started rock climbing on the gritstone edges of his native England at the age of
15. Now a recently retired university geology instructor, he spends his time rock climbing
in the Rockies, the Okanagan and, when winter arrives, in Australia and other warm places.

Imagine going to the supermarket and buying three bags full of food but then dropping one in the parking lot before driving away. With the amount of food each of us
wastes each year, it’s like we do the equivalent of that every single week. Food waste
is not only a waste of cash, but also a major contributor to global warming.
With more than 140 recipes and countless brilliant ideas for using everything
up, The Waste Not, Want Not Cookbook is a practical guide to a sustainable kitchen.
You’ll learn how to transform leftovers into delicious new dishes, store and preserve foods to make them last, shop smart when buying in bulk, and interpret
“best-before” dates.
So resolve to reclaim the contents of your refrigerator and pantry before sending them off to the compost pile (or, horrors, the landfill!). Do something about
food waste, one meal at a time, from your own kitchen.

HONEY
Everyday Recipes for Cooking and Baking
with Nature’s Sweetest Secret Ingredient
Angelo Prosperi-Porta
A collection of 85 sweet and savoury recipes that use nature’s sweetest whole food.
Honey is a collection of recipes that showcase the sweet, rich, and sunny-coloured
delight made by nature’s hardest worker—the bee. You’ll be surprised at how
versatile honey really is when you discover how to use it in baked goods, vegetable dishes, main dishes, desserts, sauces, preserves, and jams.
Did you know that honey can:
• add moisture and colour to breads and baked goods
• enhance the texture and depth of flavour in sauces and preserves
• provide balance and an unexpected counterpart to savoury side and main
dishes such as roasts and seafood
• add its trademark understated sweetness to confections and desserts
In addition to supplying guidelines on how to substitute honey for white
sugar in all kinds of dishes, this book offers information about the most common varietals of honey, and how to use honey to create brines that enhance the
savoury flavour of meats before roasting, smoking, or barbecuing. And if that’s
not enough, you’ll even learn how to make your own honey throat lozenges.
Angelo Prosperi-Porta has worked as a pastry chef at some of Western Canada’s
best hotels and restaurants, and ran the pastry kitchen at the Delta Mountain Inn in
Whistler, BC. In 2001, he and his partner, Ina, opened Angelo’s Cooking School at
Cooper’s Cove Guesthouse in Victoria, BC.

Seventeen-year-old Freddy is having a rough year. First, he is expelled from school
for fighting. Now, at his new school, he is required to have regular conversations with
a school counsellor—an awkward situation for anyone, really, but even more so for
Freddy, who has autism.
But then Saskia—a fair-haired girl who is non-verbal—appears at his new school,
and his memories start to unravel. When they were children, Freddy and Saskia attended
the same group therapy sessions, and he hasn’t seen her in ten years. Now, not only
does his unconventional relationship with Saskia provide him a place of respite in a
difficult world, it sets a chain of meetings and events in motion that reveal a longhidden family secret, and bring Freddy to a renewed understanding of his life and a
freeing moment of truth.
Telling a story that evokes The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by
Mark Haddon and The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion, this novel is both funny and
moving.
Aaron Cully Drake has written for newspapers and magazines, and is a former reporter and
editor. He lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, with his wife, son, and autistic daughter, all of
whom keep advising him to shut up. Do You Think This Is Strange? is his first novel.

THIS GODFORSAKEN PL ACE
Cinda Gault
The year is 1885 and Abigail Peacock is resisting what seems to be an inevitable future—
a sensible career as a teacher and marriage to the local storeowner. But then she buys a
rifle, and everything changes.
During target practice one day, she encounters Shep January, a dying outlaw. In
return for her help, he teaches her how to really shoot. When she kills the Pinkerton
who is tracking January, Abigail must make a drastic move.
She sets out on the road to Bill Cody’s Wild West Show in New York City, where
she not only befriends Annie Oakley but also falls in love with Shea Wyatt. When
Shea is wrongfully accused of the Pinkerton’s murder and put in prison, Abigail and
Annie Oakley commandeer the help of Metis Rebellion leader Gabriel Dumont, and
stage a dramatic jailbreak.
This is the absorbing tale of one tenacious woman’s journey set against the backdrop of the Canadian Wilderness and American Wild West, told by four narrators—
including Annie Oakley and Gabriel Dumont.
Cinda Gault holds a PhD in Canadian national identity issues in women’s writing of the 1960s
and 1970s. Since then, she has taught and written about Canadian literature. She lives in
Toronto, Ontario.

The fifth instalment in the Cait Morgan mystery series, a classic whodunit series featuring
an eccentric and funny female sleuth who is both a criminologist and an avid foodie.
It’s Cait and Bud’s wedding weekend and for the first time she feels like a bride—or at
least, she’s supposed to. But then the rain won’t quit, the supposedly romantic Welsh
castle they’ve chosen as their venue feels creepy, and there’s a dead body on the stairs.
What first appears to have been the untimely, unfortunate, and accidental death

BL ACK TIDE RISING
A Dan Connor Mystery (#2)
R.J. McMillen
Set along the remote islands of the Pacific Northwest coast, the second instalment in the
Dan Connor mystery series once again pairs ex-cop Dan Connor with Walker, a First
Nations tracker.
It’s been a year since retired cop Dan Connor formed an unlikely partnership with
ex-criminal Walker to find Claire, then a missing marine biologist. And it’s been a
year since he fell for her. Now he is travelling up the Pacific Northwest coast of British
Columbia to meet her in the remote village of Kyuquot for a getaway. But when Dan
stops for a visit with the lighthouse keepers of Nootka Island, he discovers the mutilated remains of a sacred totem and a large pool of blood.
With the reports of a missing woman and the discovery of a young boy’s lifeless
body, Dan is thrust back into active duty. Once again he must rely on his own logic
and Walker’s wisdom to solve the case while lives hang in the balance.
R.J. McMillen has spent over 30 years sailing the Pacific Northwest on a 36-foot sailboat she
and her husband built, visiting the remote coastal communities where her family worked in
the early 1900s. Black Tide Rising is her second mystery novel.

HIGH RIDER
Bill Gallaher
High Rider is the fact-based fictionalized account of John Ware (1845–1905). Born a
slave on a rice plantation in South Carolina, John Ware became one of the most successful independent ranchers in southern Alberta through the sheer force of his will
and through his incredible skill at the cowboy trade.
This novel details his adventures, as well as his trials and tribulations, on the long

THE CAREFREE GARDEN
Letting Nature Play Her Part
Bill Terry
A lighthearted and clever reflection on how best to work with Mother Nature to create a
carefree garden.
What happens when a lifelong gardener finally realizes he must collaborate with
Mother Nature, rather than work against her, to achieve his dream of creating the
perfect garden? In this delightful and thoughtful narrative journey of horticultural
discovery, Bill Terry asks how and even why we garden, and to what end.
These are personal stories, thoughts, and ideas about the “perfect” garden interspersed with humorous imagined conversations with Mother Nature herself. As he
works in his West Coast garden, choosing wild roses over fancy hybrid teas, and discarding man-made cultivars in favour of the charm and simplicity of peonies, hellebores, and
tulips, Terry learns to welcome and encourage happy accidents, greatly reducing the
work and effort required to maintain order (as most gardeners seek to do), and instead
embracing a substantial measure of disorder.
The perfect garden, he discovers, respects both Mother Nature’s demands—by
integrating endemic plants, and choosing natural species and varieties—and the
gardener’s personality—expressing their own taste and creativity, and embodying
private memories. This is a witty collection of reflections that will appeal to gardeners
everywhere.
Bill Terry is a retired CBC executive, as well the author of Blue Heaven and Beyond Beauty
and co-author of Beauty by Design. He lives on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast with his
wife, Rosemary.

In these inspiring letters to his grandchildren, David Suzuki speaks personally and
passionately about their future. He also explains why sports, fishing, feminism, and
failure are important; why it is dangerous to deny our biological nature; and why First
Nations must lead a revolution. He even has something to say about fashion.
His letters are also chock full of stories about his own childhood and anecdotes
about his children and grandchildren when they were small, providing an intimate
look at Suzuki’s life as a father and grandfather. Most of all, as he ponders life’s deepest
questions and offers up a lifetime of wisdom, Suzuki inspires us all to live with courage, conviction, and passion.

ON THE EDGE
The State and Fate of the World’s
Tropical Rainforests
Claude Martin
Foreword by Thomas E. Lovejoy
Approximately half the world’s tropical rainforests—essential for biodiversity, clean air
and water, and climate stability—remain intact. Will our actions over the next decades
conserve or destroy what’s left?
In the 1970s, the global community was rocked by reports documenting the deforestation of tropical rainforests, and conservation became the rallying cry of the day.
On the Edge examines what has happened, both good and bad, in the decades since.
Tropical rainforests are not just massive repositories of biodiversity: everyone on the
planet relies on this essential ecosystem for fresh water, clean air, and climate regulation. And yet, urbanization and the worldwide demand for food and biofuels still drive
deforestation, and climate change threatens to start a feedback cycle that could make
the rainforest a carbon source. With contributions from environmental luminaries
worldwide, On the Edge, the most important book on tropical rainforests in 50 years,
takes a close look at deforestation and reforestation throughout the world and finds
hope in success stories that guide us toward conservation.
A report to the Club of Rome
Published with the support of the World Wildlife Fund, the International Union for
Conservation of Nature, the Club of Rome, and the David Suzuki Foundation.
Claude Martin, Ph.D., worked as a field biologist in India and parks director in Ghana
before becoming the director of WWF International and an advisor to various conservation
organizations.
Thomas E. Lovejoy is a senior fellow at the United Nations Foundation and University
Professor in the Environmental Science and Policy department at George Mason University.
Since 2009 he has served on the board of directors for the Amazon Conservation Association.

For too long, the gut has been the body’s most ignored and least appreciated organ,
but it turns out that it’s responsible for more than just dirty work: our gut is at the
core of who we are. Gut, an international bestseller, gives the alimentary canal its
long-overdue moment in the spotlight. With quirky charm, rising science star Giulia
Enders explains the gut’s magic, answering questions like: Why does acid reflux
happen? What’s really up with gluten and lactose intolerance? How does the gut
affect obesity and mood? Communication between the gut and the brain is one of the
fastest-growing areas of medical research—on par with stem-cell research. Our gut
reactions, we learn, are intimately connected with our physical and mental well-being.
Enders’s beguiling manifesto will make you finally listen to those butterflies in your
stomach: they’re trying to tell you something important.
“To dismiss Giulia Enders’s debut work as a ‘toilet book’ would do it great injustice …
its message is far from flippant: our gastrointestinal tract is not only the body’s most
underappreciated organ, but ‘the brain’s most important adviser’.” —The Guardian
Giulia Enders is a two-time scholarship winner of the Wilhelm und Else Heraeus Foundation
and is studying medicine at the Institute for Microbiology in Frankfurt. In 2012 her presentation on the gut won her first prize at the Science Slam in Freiburg and went viral on YouTube.

FALLEN
A Trauma, a Marriage, and the Transformative
Power of Music
Kara Stanley
In the vein of Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking, Kara Stanley tells the compelling story of her husband’s life-changing brain and spinal cord injury, and the role of music,
science, and love in recovery.
Kara Stanley combines the heart-wrenching narrative of a catastrophic brain and spinal
cord injury her husband suffered after a fall with the latest research on the brain. She
also describes the transformative role of music both before and during his continuing
rehabilitation and his battle to return to work as a professional musician. At the heart
of the story is the relationship between Stanley and her husband, as she explores what
allows a marriage to grow and thrive amid pain, chaos, and uncertainty.
Kara Stanley holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of British
Columbia, and her writing has appeared in Fugue, HipMama, and Paste.

BAREFOOT AT THE L AKE
A Boyhood Summer in Cottage Country
Bruce Fogle
An idyllic summer at the cottage in the 1950s, as revealed through the eyes of a boy on the
cusp of adolescence: a first crush, the joy of nature, and the struggle to understand grown-ups.
To ten-year-old Bruce, the summer of 1954 seemed, at first, like any other in cottage
country: floating in the rowboat, eating peach pie, exploring with Angus the dog,
watching the seagulls, frogs and herons, and catching crayfish. But just when he thinks
life is perfect, everything starts to change, and over the summer both the harshness of
the adult world and the patterns of the natural world reveal themselves. By the time
the weather turns he will be a different child and will have chosen his own path to
understanding the wilderness that waits behind the family cottage.

the predatory relationships in this web of life. Through state-of-the-art camera

A FL AG FOR CANADA
50th Anniversary Celebration
Rick Archbold
In 1964, almost a hundred years after its birth as a country, Canada still didn’t
have its own flag. Yet Prime Minister Lester Pearson’s recent election pledge to
at last give Canadians their own distinct, official banner seemed like a promise
to commit political suicide. Six months later, after one of the bitterest debates in
parliamentary history, the House of Commons voted to adopt a design chosen by
a parliamentary committee. A Flag for Canada is a stunning visual biography that
traces the flag’s central maple leaf symbol from its colonial origins to its gradual
acceptance as the unofficial but unmistakable emblem of Canada.

SEPAR ATION ANXIETY
A Coming-of-Middle-Age Story
Miji Campbell
A sharply observed and wryly funny memoir that chronicles a woman’s search for
independence and self-actualization in the face of an anxiety disorder.
Miji Campbell grew up in a close-knit family in the 1960s and ’70s, in a middleclass Calgary suburb called Kingsland. Her life proceeds in an orderly fashion until
she moves away from home and then suddenly, inexplicably, it begins to unravel.
Night after night, Miji wrestles with insomnia and increasing anxiousness. She
yearns for her mother’s presence and feels overcome by homesickness. It’s not until
middle age that Miji learns she has an anxiety disorder and finds ways to quiet her
mind and body. Through acts of courage and grace, she learns to stand—tentatively,
hopefully—on her own.
Miji Campbell is a writer and teacher whose work has appeared in print media, radio and
an anthology. A two-time National Magazine Award nominee, Miji offers writing workshops
through her business, Write Where You Are. Born and raised in Calgary, Miji lives in Red Deer,
Alberta. Separation Anxiety is her first book.

A SHORT HISTORY OF
CR A Z Y BONE
a long poem
Patrick Friesen
“Crazy Bone’s solitary life on the margins is at once a performance of the archetypal
feminine forever at odds with patriarchal order and a libretto for the wayward,
solitary, and vulnerable spirit of art, passion, and expression.”

The voice of Crazy Bone takes you on a mesmerizing journey in Patrick Friesen’s
evocative new long poem. Crazy Bone lives on the edge of the world, at the edge of
time, wandering the mid-path of her life, on the outskirts of a small town. She is
caught in her own monologue, listening to herself, to the river. Crazy Bone is a trickster, a fool, a wild woman laughing, a campesino, who through loss is finding her way
back to herself. Society has dismissed her presence as irrelevant, but Crazy is cleverly
confident, and tests the reader. In her rambling, she references writers, singers, artists,
theologians, tightrope walkers, philosophers, not as experts but as guides along the
way. You won’t forget her voice as she passes by.
Patrick Friesen is an award-winning author, formerly from Winnipeg, now living in Victoria.
He adapted his book The Shunning for stage; it premiered at the Prairie Theatre Exchange
in 1985 and was performed in 2011 at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. He has also collaborated with various musicians, choreographers and dancers and recorded two CDs of
text and improv music. Friesen was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award for poetry
and the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize in 1998 and 2003 and won the McNally Robinson Book
of the Year Award in Manitoba in 1996 and the ReLit Award for Poetry in 2012.

BR AIDED SKIN
Chelene Knight
“The city, the body, the past—these are the strands that Knight triumphantly weaves
together in Braided Skin.”
—Wayde Compton, author and Director, Creative Writing, SFU
Braided Skin is the vibrant telling of experiences of mixed ethnicity, urban childhood, poverty and youthful dreams through various voices. Knight writes a confident
rhythm of poetry, prose and erasure by using the recurring image of braiding—a
different metaphor than “mixing,” our default when speaking the language of race.
In the title poem, “Braided Skin,” this terminology shifts, to entwining and crossing,
holding together but always displaying the promise or threat of unravelling. This is just
as all tellings of family, history and relationships must be—“Skin that carries stories of
missing middles.” When speaking about race, Knight raises the question, then drops it,
and the image becomes other objects, then abstraction, and memory—finally becoming
something “she breathes in” actively.
Chelene Knight was born in Vancouver and is a graduate of The Writer’s Studio at SFU. She has
been published in Sassafras Literary Magazine, Room, emerge 2013 and Raven Chronicles
and is a member of the editorial board of Room. Her work is deeply rooted in her experiences
of mixed ethnicity. Braided Skin is her remarkable debut book.

Jack Akroyd (1921–1996) was born in Halifax, Yorkshire. Following war service
in the RAF he emigrated to Canada and attended the Ontario College of Art. In
1953 he moved to the West Coast, working first as a draftsman then a freelance
artist. Two trips to Japan in the 1960s profoundly affected his perspective and
iconography, and he developed a signature style he called the “visual diary,” which
rendered details of his daily life, dreams and reminiscences in mysterious combinations. He exhibited at the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Burnaby Art Gallery,
and held three major shows in Japan, selling over a hundred works. He died of a
heart attack on a Vancouver bus. His paintings are found in many private collections in Japan, Europe, Australia and across North America.
Peter Busby is a writer and art collector. He was born in West Yorkshire and educated at
Sheffield and Leeds universities. He co-wrote two thrillers and the BBC series Thin Air and
is the author of First to Fly, winner of the James Madison book award. He lives in Vancouver,
British Columbia.
Paul Wolf founded Artists West in Ottawa and sold West Coast art by avant-garde
outsider artists from Vancouver during the 60s and 70s. He lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Aliens Among Us
Invasive Animals and Plants in
British Columbia
Alex Van Tol
Would you be surprised if you came face to face with a Drumming Katydid,
Red-eared Slider or Brown Bullhead? Would you know what to do if Dalmatian
Toadflax or Giant Hogweed landed in your neighbourhood?
Alex Van Tol can help. In Aliens Among Us, she identifies more than 50 species
of animals and plants that have invaded British Columbia. With the help of colour
photographs and illustrations, she exposes the invaders, explains how they got
here and what they’re doing to the environment.
In this first-ever children’s book published by the Royal BC Museum, Van Tol
has harvested the knowledge of museum biologists to alert the next generation of
responsible environmentalists. Her list of serious invaders includes the colourfully named Purple Loosestrife, Violet Tunicate, Eastern Grey Squirrel and Yellow
Perch, species that tend to take over an area and crowd out or destroy native species. She names the creatures that can eat their way through an ecosystem, like
Smallmouth Bass, Gypsy Moths and American Bullfrogs, as well as vandals like
Norway Rats and European Starlings that cause damage to property. And she
points out the species that might do serious harm to humans and other animals,
such Rockpool Mosquitoes, Giant Hogweed and Poison Hemlock. Some aliens,
like European Wall Lizards and Giant Garden Slugs, haven’t yet posed problems
in BC, at least not that we’re aware of – but they still need to be watched. And
finally, Van Tol raises the alert on species that haven’t yet arrived but may be
coming soon, like Northern Snakeheads, Fence Lizards and Zebra Mussels.
This readable and alarmingly informative book will help young people prepare for the invasion, and arm them with the tools to stop the spread of unwanted aliens in British Columbia.

Stewards of the
People’s Forests
A Short History of the British Columbia
Forest Service
Robert Griffin and Lorne Hammond
The creation of the British Columbia Forest Branch in 1912 marked the start of over
a century of service by the many women and men who served as stewards of British
Columbia’s forests. It is a remarkable story. This book honours those decades of service and
presents a small portion of the many events and personalities that mark the evolution of
British Columbians’ relationship with their forest history. —from the Introduction

Historians Robert Griffin and Lorne Hammond tell the story of BC’s Forest
Branch—renamed the Forest Service in 1947—over a century of stewardship of the
province’s largest industry. The authors relate not just the big stories involving the
major personalities, such as H.R. MacMillan, Ernest Manning, C.D. Orchard and
Ray Williston, but also the front-line foresters, rangers and firefighters who dedicated
their lives—and sometimes risked them—to protect BC’s forests.
This book is about a group of people who made important contributions to the
growth of British Columbia as an economic force in North America.
Dr. Robert Griffin recently retired as history curator at the Royal BC Museum, a position he
held for more than 30 years. He has written many articles on the forest and mining industries, and recently co-authored (with Nancy Oke) Feeding the Family: 100 Years of Food and
Drink in Victoria.
Dr. Lorne Hammond has been a history curator at the Royal BC Museum since 1997. He has
written extensively on energy history in the province and has curated museum exhibitions
on many aspects of BC history.

The Waggoner Cruising Guide is often called “. . . the Bible for Northwest Cruising”.
Each year it is extensively updated to provide the latest information covering each
cruising area along with detailed listings of moorage and fuel facilities. There’s text
on anchorages, local knowledge, the “flavour” of each area, some history, and list on
things to see and do. Lots of maps and photos, too. (The Waggoner contains 150 maps
and 375 photos.)
The Waggoner’s maps, showing the coverage of each chapter, the harbours,
and individual marinas, are one of its most popular features. They show approach
routes and facilities, and take much of the anxiety out of entering a harbour for
the first time. Maps of individual marinas detail the entrances and markers, shoal
areas, dock layout, and location of the guest moorage and key facilities.
The Waggoner is an easy reference to use. To find the page you need, turn to
the index, table of contents, or the locator maps in the front of the book. Charts
for each area are listed right up front in the chapters. Its detailed listings of marine
facilities are logically organized and updated each year by Editor Mark Bunzel,
Managing Editor Sam Landsman, correspondents, and the Waggoner staff.
More than a catalog of listings and maps, the Waggoner is praised as a “good read.”
The Waggoner is full of navigation tips, weather lore, anchoring ideas, and local
knowledge. Serious sidebar features and descriptions explain tide-rips, reversing
tidal rapids, stern-tie lines, shellfish toxins, and more. Lighter pieces and descriptions include the “lost-in-the-’50s” flavor of downtown Olympia; the proper attitude while waiting at the Ballard Locks (“it takes as long as it takes, and that’s how
it is”); and the discovery of a genuine fur-bearing trout (very rare) in Prince Rupert.
These stories are intended to entertain but also instruct, giving an “insider’s look”
at hazards, joys, and just plain facts of Northwest boating. Things change. Don’t
get caught without the latest cruising information for 2015.
