Annual Report to the Community
2014-2015 Annual Report to the Community A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR AND PRESIDENT & CEO Decade after decade, over centuries and millennia, Jews around the world have embraced the blessing and the responsibility of caring for one another. Today, the Milwaukee Jewish Federation is our community’s way of continuing this tradition. It’s our communal response to both the everyday and the extraordinary needs of Jews in Milwaukee, in Israel and in 70 countries around the world. ANNUAL REPORT 2014 -2015 In 2014-15, we made great strides in developing the financial resources that will sustain our work. We’re pleased to report that our donors invested $5.9 million in our 2015 Annual Campaign, a 3% increase over the previous year, after a multi-year downward trend in campaign achievement. Our donors see the value in our work, and it shows in their giving. We also made a giant step forward in building our Jewish Community Foundation, which now has $165 million in total assets. Through our Create a Jewish Legacy program, we secured 365 commitments for after lifetime “legacy” gifts with an estimated value of $8.7 million. We are following the ancient tradition among Jews of responding to need by saying, "Hineni: I am here. I am ready to do what is asked of me." This Annual Report tells the story of an extraordinarily generous community that distributed $19.6 million in support to nonprofits through the Milwaukee Jewish Federation and our Jewish Community Foundation. It’s a community to whom we owe our deepest gratitude. Daniel Bader Board Chair Hannah Rosenthal President & CEO 1 WHO WE ARE The Milwaukee Jewish Federation changes lives. We are part of a network of Jewish Federations across the United States and Canada that collectively is among the top 10 charities in the world. Our movement raises and distributes more than $4 billion annually for social welfare, social services and educational needs, and protects and enhances the well-being of Jews worldwide. Locally we identify, support and address the full range of programs that sustain the Jewish community today and for future generations. We are thousands of Milwaukeeans who contribute time and financial resources that, combined with the resources of other Federations and our partner agencies, make an impact none of us can make alone. It’s the power of collective action, and it’s what the Federation is all about. 2 YOUR DOLLARS AT WORK The Federation and our network of local and international partners are hard at work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in Milwaukee, in Israel and in 70 countries around the world. I grew up in Miami and married a Milwaukee native. Shalom Baby has been an avenue for me to get to know other young Jewish families in Milwaukee. Like many Federation programs, Shalom Baby is able to help fill in the gaps between the dynamic synagogue and neighborhood communities in Milwaukee. – Lizzie Katz HINENI I AM HERE I am a kids’ baseball coach, a Packers, Bucks and Brewers fan, a member of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s board of directors, and an advocate for the LGBT community. My transgender sister, Lauren Arnold, recently tragically passed away the day before Milwaukee’s Pridefest. The Jewish Federation sponsored a booth which gave me the unbelievable opportunity to volunteer there. I had the great fortune to meet some incredible Jewish gay and transgender people who were so proud to be welcomed in by the Jewish community. The Milwaukee Jewish Federation is doing an incredible job to help make Milwaukee a more inclusive place for everyone to be Jewish. – Brent Arnold 4 I am a library lover, an arts enthusiast, a champion of things I believe in, and the founding president of Jewish Museum Milwaukee, a program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, where we cultivate awareness of Jews and our history. The Stitching History From the Holocaust exhibit helped educate the Jewish and non-Jewish communities about the Holocaust and what it means to be a Jew. We collaborated with the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and the Haggerty Museum of Art, building a network between the Jewish community and the rest of the city. It was a remarkable opportunity for the entire community to benefit from the work of Jewish Museum Milwaukee. – Marianne Lubar I AM READY. I am a physics major, a kick boxer, the CEO of my own startup and an advocate for Israel, thanks to advocacy training by the Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council. I’m concerned about the heavy anti-Israel sentiment on many college campuses. The JCRC helps teens like me learn to speak up for Israel before we even step foot on a college campus. I’ve developed the skills and knowledge to have fact-based discussions about Israel. Now I can help educate people who don’t know a lot and help people who don’t care about supporting Israel become more passionate. – Rebecca Perl 5 JEWISH LIFE I am a sophomore at Homestead High School, a curler, a member of Eden (BBYO chapter), and a recipient of a scholarship from the Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Jewish Community Foundation. My scholarship made it possible for me to attend the BBYO Chapter Leadership Training Conference, which helped me develop my leadership skills and reinforced my passion for Judaism. The Shabbat and Havdalah services at CLTC were some of the best experiences of my life. Singing and hanging out with people I just met but are just like me reinforced why Jewish traditions are so important. I’m grateful for the scholarship because I know it changed my life. – Emma Rachum HINENI I AM HERE I am a journalist, a lawyer, a new insurance agent, and a participant in Shalom Milwaukee, a program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. My fiancée and I moved to town without having any friends or family here. Shalom Milwaukee helped introduce us to the Jewish community. The Federation made a point to reach out to us, bring us to events, and put us in touch with other people so we could build a network of friends. This program helps young professionals in the city and new arrivals realize there’s more to the Jewish world than your parents’ synagogue. – Matt Taub I AM READY. 6 JEWISH LIFE OUR PROMISE We are committed to building vibrant Jewish communities, to strengthening Jewish life, and to connecting people of all ages to Jewish experiences and to each other. OUR WORK A vibrant Jewish community is made of committed, passionate Jews. We foster Jewish identity and connections through education, camping, youth groups and social action. Together with our network of agencies, we are creating a community that is welcoming to all and that responds to each individual's search for Jewish meaning. OUR IMPACT The Milwaukee Jewish Federation fosters a love of Jewish life beginning at birth through our Shalom Baby program and through the preschools we support – Gam Ami and Jewish Beginnings Lubavitch Preschool. Many of these children go on to Hillel Academy, the Milwaukee Jewish Day School and Yeshiva Elementary School, each of which is a partner agency of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. In total, our partners educated more than 850 children last year. Not only did we educate students, we also taught their teachers through our Coalition for Jewish Learning. Our workshops are free, and we even pay a stipend for the teachers’ time. We strengthen Jewish connections through our support of BBYO-Wisconsin Region, which enhances Jewish identity and builds leadership skills for 500 teens and pre-teens. With the help of Federation funding, Hillel Milwaukee and Hillel Foundation-Madison provide a Jewish home away from home, helping to strengthen college students' Jewish identity. Our campus Hillels connected Jews to one another through cultural and educational activities like building sukkahs and enjoying more than 8,500 Shabbat meals. We will support and strengthen Jewish life wherever Jews live around the world. 7 CRISIS RELIEF HINENI I AM HERE I AM READY. I am a hiker, a dog lover, the Israel Campus Fellow in Milwaukee, and a beneficiary of the Jewish Agency for Israel, which is supported by the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. During the second war in Gaza, a bomb landed on my family’s home in Kibbutz Reim, completely destroying the building. My mother, by a miracle, escaped without being injured. Just two days after the bombing, a JAFI representative came to the house with a check to help pay for rebuilding. JAFI also provided trauma support to people like my mother who were affected by the conflict. She went through a long process, and we are grateful for the help of JAFI. – Shay Yoos 8 CRISIS RELIEF OUR PROMISE The Milwaukee Jewish Federation is there in times of crisis when you need us most. We provide a lifeline for Jews and non-Jews in distress here at home, in Israel and across the globe. Whether it’s missiles raining down on Israel’s south, a violent conflict in Ukraine, Hurricane Sandy on the East Coast or an earthquake in Nepal, Federation is there to help. OUR WORK Our network of local and international partners enables us to respond quickly and effectively. We fund urgently needed basics like food and medicine, and long-term needs like trauma counseling. And we provide resources to emergency service providers so they can help where they’re most needed. OUR IMPACT Milwaukee contributed more than $200,000 to the $55 million raised by Federations during Operation Protective Edge in 2014. These funds provide trauma support for Israel’s most vulnerable citizens, aid lone soldiers, and offer respite to people living in the conflict zones. In Ukraine, where the lives of more than 30,000 elderly Jews and 4,600 children have been disrupted by conflict, we’re delivering food and medicine, sheltering displaced people, and expediting aliyah for those who want to move to Israel. Immediately after the earthquake in Nepal, we helped bring an expert disaster response team to provide immediate relief and assess ongoing needs. We are always there, no matter what. 9 ISR AEL CONNEC TION HINENI I AM HERE I AM READY. I am a baseball lover, a fan of pop culture, a native New Yorker, and a participant in a Taglit-Birthright Israel trip. The trip gave me a chance to connect with people my age with similar backgrounds and reaffirmed that it’s okay to be a secular Jew. I felt what it’s like to be in a place where I’m not a minority, where I have a common connection with people who are so far away but still like me. I left with a greater appreciation of Israel’s proximity to other countries, of what Israelis go through on a daily basis, and of the incredibly unique land and culture. – Zach Weber 10 ISRAEL CONNECTION OUR PROMISE We helped build Israel. Today we help keep it strong. We are dedicated to supporting Israelis in need of assistance – every day and during times of crisis. And we work tirelessly to deepen connections between the Jewish State and the Milwaukee Jewish community. OUR WORK Our financial support ensures the strength of our overseas partners who are hard at work supporting Israelis every day. When Israel is in crisis, we mobilize our networks at home and overseas to come immediately to her aid. We also cultivate a love for our Jewish homeland through programs that bring Israel to life for Milwaukee children and adults. OUR IMPACT During Operation Protective Edge, we raised emergency funds to support the urgent needs of Israelis living in the conflict zones. We brought together 700 Milwaukeeans at our Israel Solidarity Gathering where we demonstrated our unwavering support for the people of Israel. Our Israel Center engaged nearly 2,000 participants in Israel programming in Milwaukee including cultural events like screenings of Israeli films and a concert with an Israeli rock star. We helped create one-to-one connections through our Shlichim (Israeli emissaries), our Shin Shinim (young Israeli emissaries) and our Israel Campus Fellow who bring Israel to Milwaukee. And we showed the greater Milwaukee community a different picture of Israel through delegations of Israeli chefs and medical clowns, organized by Partnership2Gether. We helped send young adults to life-changing Taglit-Birthright Israel trips, and we helped millions of immigrants move to Israel and start new lives — 26,000 in the past year alone. Our support of Israel is resolute, as is our commitment to cultivating a love of Israel among Milwaukee Jews. 11 SAFET Y NET HINENI I AM HERE I AM READY. I am a former English teacher, a classical guitarist, a poet, a resident of Tbilisi, Georgia in the former Soviet Union, and a beneficiary of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, which is supported by the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. I experienced a bitter divorce from an abusive husband. It ruined me financially, and my life took a downward turn. I have several serious illnesses, and I am nearly blind from cataracts. I can no longer leave my home. Through the JDC Hesed program, I receive help with bathing, laundry and housekeeping. I receive a hot meal every day and groceries each week. My JDC case worker is usually the only visitor I have. She keeps me connected to the world. — Irina Davidovskaya 12 SAFETY NET OUR PROMISE We support one of the largest, strongest and most enduring networks of social services in North America, providing care that changes lives. OUR WORK We fund skilled providers who expertly care for homebound seniors and for people of all ages with disabilities, counselors who help troubled families overcome difficulties, and programs that help struggling adults put food on their tables and pay their rent. We deliver critical aid to vulnerable populations — older adults, individuals with disabilities, at-risk children, impoverished families — during times of peace and times of conflict. OUR IMPACT Locally, funds raised through the Milwaukee Jewish Federation helped provide counseling to nearly 1,000 individuals through Jewish Family Services and served more than 27,000 clients at the Jewish Community Food Pantry operated by the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center. We distributed over $600,000 in scholarships to make day schools, camp and other Jewish programs more accessible and inclusive. In Madison and in Washington, D.C., we’re a powerful advocate for policy changes and reforms that improve quality of life and services for the most vulnerable. We work to ensure that older adults and individuals with disabilities have adequate resources. With our help, more than 160,000 seniors and thousands of at-risk families in the former Soviet Union — among the poorest Jews in the world — have enough food for dinner and heat during brutal winters. In South America, where the ongoing economic crisis has hit the Jewish community hard, we make sure thousands of struggling parents have baby formula and diapers for their infants, and help buying groceries. We are a source of comfort and care for Jews in need everywhere. 13 JEWISH LE ADERSHIP HINENI I AM HERE I AM READY. I am a stay-at-home mom, an architect by training, a fan of fitness classes, and a member of the boards of Congregation Shalom, the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, and Women’s Philanthropy of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. The Federation helped develop my leadership skills through the George Weinstein Fellowship and the Women’s Philanthropy mentorship program. The Weinstein Fellowship helped me understand the landscape of the local Jewish community, and my mentor helped me learn how I can make an impact. — Tami Kent 14 JEWISH LEADERSHIP OUR PROMISE We help secure the Jewish future by empowering community members to take charge of their Jewish lives and provide leadership to their community. For some this means sharing time and talents to shape current programs and future plans. For others, it’s learning how to become informed philanthropists who can invest in meeting the needs of our community today and tomorrow. HOW WE HELP We provide formal and informal opportunities for leadership development among Jews from school-age children to adults. OUR IMPACT Our Weinstein Young Leadership program provides formal and experiential leadership training to young adults, culminating in a mission to Israel. These young adults go on to become leaders, serving on boards of local agencies, synagogues and day schools. Our Women’s Philanthropy program helps engage and educate women about philanthropy. They develop the skills and knowledge that help them take on some of the most prominent leadership positions in the Jewish community locally and nationally. Our Jewish day school partners instill a love of Jewish community in our youngest children. BBYO-Wisconsin Region enhances these passions and begins to develop teens’ leadership skills. And together, Hillel Milwaukee, Hillel Foundation-Madison and the Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council help college students become educated and skilled advocates for themselves, for Israel and for the Jewish community. We engage Jewish leaders and help them turn their Jewish values into action. 15 FINANCIAL RESOURCES HINENI I AM HERE I AM READY. 16 I am an amateur carpenter, a baseball fan, a native of Brooklyn, and the holder of a Donor Advised Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. When you have enough, you give the rest away. That’s what my father taught me. It’s not my style to have a yacht or an airplane. I love Milwaukee and want to contribute to the city. A Donor Advised Fund makes it easy to make gifts to Jewish and community organizations. I chose to create my fund at the Jewish Community Foundation because I’m Jewish. It was the obvious choice. – Dr. Paul Jacobs FINANCIAL RESOURCES Our work is powered by financial resources that we develop to fund our own programs and those of our local and global partners. We raise funds through our Annual Campaign, emergency campaigns, special programs and business partner initiatives. JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION The Jewish Community Foundation of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation builds security for the future by helping individuals and families create planned gifts and endowments. It also provides financial support today by matching donors with opportunities for charitable giving. $165,317,475 total assets $28,053,521 contributions received $10,985,560 distributed 777 funds 3,364 grants made 900 charities supported Create a Jewish Legacy In 2014-15, the Foundation completed the first year of Create a Jewish Legacy, a program that helps donors create legacy gifts, providing a permanent source of support for the Jewish causes they care about. The program, which is spearheaded by the Foundation, works in partnership with area synagogues, agencies and day schools. It’s founded on the principle that all of us, regardless of age, wealth or affiliation, can make an enduring financial impact. 365 legacy commitments $8,700,000 in future gifts ANNUAL CAMPAIGN The Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Annual Campaign raises critical funds that are distributed to our partner agencies, locally and in Israel, and to Federation programs and services. These funds are especially valuable because they are unrestricted, allowing each recipient agency to use the dollars where they are needed most. Our donors invested $5.9 million in our 2015 Annual Campaign, an increase of 3% over the previous year. This increase demonstrates that the Federation is making an impact that our donors value. 17 2014 -15 SUPPORT TO THE COMMUNIT Y Milwaukee Jewish Federation 2014-15 SUPPORT FOR OUR COMMUNITY * Religion $1.7M 8% Education $4.8M 25% Culture $5.1M 26% $19,562,646 Human Services $0.7M 3% Healthcare Other $0.2M 1% $7.0M 37% Local and National/Overseas Recipient Organizations National & Overseas $4.6M Jewish and Secular Recipient Organizations Secular $2.6M 13% 23% Local $15.0M 77% Jewish $17.0M 87% * Includes funds from our Annual Campaign and our Jewish Community Foundation. 18 2014-2015 SUMMARY OF SUPPORT FOR OUR COMMUNITY Through our Annual Campaign and our Jewish Community Foundation, the Milwaukee Jewish Federation develops and distributes financial resources to support our community.
