Dr. Betsy Joy B. Tan (2nd from right) and Mrs. Lorna T. Yso (first from right) entrust books to Cantil -e
Elementary School, Dumaguete City in a turn over ceremony.
Last June 23, 2011 another public school became the latest recipient of the SU-Presbyterian
Church of Ann Arbor Michigan outreach program. Some library personnel headed by University Librarian, Mrs. Lorna T. Yso, together
with Dr. Betsy Joy B. Tan, SU Acting President
and concurrently Vice President for Academic
Affairs (VPAA) handed out 669 books to Cantile Elementary School of Dumaguete City. As a
gesture of gratitude, the school management
prepared a short program to entertain the
group.
Earlier, three other public schools of the city
received their set of books allocated for them
from the same source. These public schools are
the Amador Dagudag, Camanjac and Ramon
Magsaysay Memorial Elementary Schools. The
first two schools comprised the second batch of
beneficiaries of the said outreach program while
the last one together with Cantil-e Elementary
School belonged to the third batch. The first
batch were the Babajuba and Hermenigilda Elementary Schools.
The program stipulates that on the second year
the beneficiary schools (which SU arranged by
pairs) will exchange the loaned book collection
with each other. The following year, the respective schools shall become the owner of the said
book collection ∎

SU LIBRARY PERSONNEL HOLD
TRAINING ON ARCHIVES
SU Library personnel eagerly listening as Bongalos demonstrates to them the proper handling of archival materials. Inset. The speaker in front the portrait of Dr. Silliman and Dr. and Mrs. Hibbard.
The Silliman University (SU) Library personnel held a training
program on archives, entitled
“Bringing the Past to the Present”
last May 30-June 1, 2011 at the
American Studies Resource Center (ASRC) of the Robert B. and
Metta J. Silliman Library. This is in
line with the staff capability program of the Library and also to
improve the organization, maintenance, and management of its archival materials. The resource
speaker was Ms. Florbella Sedillo
Bongalos, Administrative/Archival
Assistant of De La Salle University (DLSU) Library. Bongalos, a
trained archivist, is a product of
Silliman University, and the first
U N I V E R S I T Y
placer of the PRC Librarian’s Licensure Examination in 2006.
In the three-day activity, Bongalos guided the group in understanding archives and records
management and conducted
workshops on inventory and appraisal of materials, arrangement
and description of the archival
materials. Digitization, disaster
preparedness and/or response,
and the actual arrangement and
description of SU records were
also discussed. At the end of
the training program, the participants were able to determine
and separate archival materials
from the so-called Sillimaniana
Collection ∎
LIBRARY PERSONNEL LEARN TO BLOG
An in-house training on Creating a Simple Website and Blog was conducted for all library personnel
on May 13, 2011. This is another staff capability building program of the Library. This is also to make use of
the new emerging technologies to maximize the library services and reach as many users as possible online.
The training was divided into two packed sessions. In the morning, the group learned how to create
a simple website, how to make a blog site and write blogs and the afternoon was spent on writing blogs.
The group had fun in doing the activity. They realized that the skills they learned from the training could
enhance their online capability to promote the library and connect to the SU online users.
The training was conducted by Mr. Rey Dennis Caballero, Cyber Library Technician, assisted by Mrs.
Isabel Mariño, Acquisitions Librarian and Mr. Eric Ramos, Cyber Library Assistant Technician.
LIBRARY CONDUCTS STUDENT ASSISTANTS ORIENTATION
The SU library student assistants and the library personnel had a memorable time during the
student assistants library orientation program last June 19, 2011 at the Robert B. and Metta J. Silliman
Library. All library personnel and assistants took time out from their regular library tasks to be acquainted
with the other members of the library family and to be oriented with library rules, regulations and policies.
Mrs. Lorna T. Yso, University Librarian started off the program by introducing the library personnel to all the
student assistants. On that important occasion, some talented librarians and assistants brought the house
down as they entertained the crowd. More fun and laughter followed when everybody fought for the prizes
in the games and contests. All in all, it was a fun-filled and productive activity as everyone wished that there
will be another similar endeavor in the future to further foster camaraderie among members of the library
family.
PLASABAS RETIRES
One of the staunch pillars of the SU Library, Mrs. Gemma B. Plasabas, Knowledge for Development
Center (KDC) Librarian bid her colleagues farewell after thirty-seven (37) years of service. Her retirement
took effect on July 1, 2011.
In a send-off party, Mrs. Lorna T. Yso, University Librarian, thanked her for her valuable
contributions to the Library. Plasabas was not only a librarian but also an educator who helped develop
future librarians inorder to make them worthy and effective librarians. As she embarks on the next journey
of her life, everyone wished that she continue to lead a productive and enjoyable life.

STAFF UPDATE
University Librarian and American Studies Resource Center (ASRC) Director Mrs. Lorna T. Yso, and
ASRC Librarian, Mrs. Nenith P. Calibo, attended the American Corners Annual Conference from May 4-6,
2011, in Marco Polo Plaza Cebu City. On hand to welcome the participants to the affair was no less than the
U.S. Embassy Manila Deputy Chief of Mission, Ms. Leslie A. Bassett. The annual conference sought to
amplify the knowledge and skills of American Corners staff in understanding social media concepts and
platforms and to enhance their ability to plan and implement programs using social media tools. The
conference also promoted current trends in technology to further increase, strengthen, and create more
dynamic programs in alignment with the ASRCs public diplomacy framework. Further, it emphasized the
significance of the tools like iPad/tablets, audio books, and e-books for research and information.
Mrs. Lorna T. Yso, University Librarian, together with the other Directors of Libraries from the
Visayas and Mindanao joined the Directors’ Forum on May 9-10, 2011 at the Elizabeth Hotel, Cebu City
which was organized by LibTech Source Philippines, Inc., an affiliate company of iGroup (Asia Pacific)
Limited, a Hong Kong based multinational organization with offices in 13 countries in the Asia Pacific
Region. The forum was intended to inform the librarians of the new services and product packages
available to improve the digital collections of libraries. The company encouraged libraries to form a
consortium to be able to avail of a much lower rate.
The Academic Libraries Book Acquisition Systems Association, Inc. (ALBASA Inc.) held its 38th Annual
General Assembly at the Cebu Grand Convention Center, Cebu City from May 17-19, 2011 with the theme,
“Educational Reforms: Challenges to Libraries.” Mrs. Lorna T. Yso, University Librarian, represented Silliman
University in this gathering. The three-day program included a book fair, business meeting and a two-day
seminar. The objectives of the event were to make librarians aware of the current Philippine educational
reforms to prepare them to respond to the challenges brought about by these reforms and to make them
aware of library standards specifically the CHED library standards.
SU KDC delegation led by Dr. Betsy Joy B. Tan (Acting President and Vice President for Academic
Affairs), Mrs. Gemma Plasabas (SU KDC Librarian), Mr. Mark Raygan Garcia (Office of Public Information
Director), Dr. Reynaldo Rivera (School of Public Affairs and Governance Dean), and Mrs. Lorna T. Yso
(University Librarian) recently joined the Policy Dialogue on Local Governance and KDC Annual Meeting on
May 26-27, 2011 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Quezon City. The participants were welcomed by Bert Hofman,
World Bank Country Director. The two-day event was composed of a series of discussions with the
Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jesse Robredo, local government unit (LGU)
executives, KDC network members, and non-government organizations on DILG’s reform programs geared
towards improving performance of LGUs. The dialogue sought inputs from the KDC network members on
the roles that the academe can take in strengthening performance monitoring of LGUs and in promoting
reforms through an expanded network of universities and colleges working with their local networks of civil
society organizations and LGUs.
The activity was sponsored by the World Bank Philippines.
