In Memoriam
Major Anders Lindgren has passed away
at 85 years of age. A former cavalry
officer and member of the Swedish
Olympic team, his influence upon so
many riders and instructors in the U.S.
has been profound. His insight, patience,
and wit, along with his love and respect
for the horses touched hundreds of us
and redirected our riding lives. Major
Lindgren was a 2003 USDF Hall of Fame
Inductee.
Major Lindgren was a HUGE presence in
NODA's past. Many long-time NODA
members participated in the instructors’
seminars NODA sponsored. These

seminars attracted dressage instructors
from all over. He taught many of our
best instructors how to teach, how to do
lesson plans, how to lunge properly and
how to long line. He taught them riding
and teaching theory, and how to
appreciate their responsibility for the
welfare of the horse and the sport.
Major Lindgren conducted clinics at
Dagmar Zimmerman's farm, and later at
Liberty Bell Stables. Many of our local
professionals rode in his clinics and
attended his lectures. NODA members
who had the privilege of working with
him absorbed as much as they could
every time he came. He was a mentor to
many NODA members.

USDF Announces Dressage Tests iPhone App
December 22, 2010 (Lexington, KY) - The United States Dressage Federation
(USDF), in cooperation with Numen Communications, has released the first
version of the new 2011 USDF Introductory tests in a downloadable iPhone
application.
Each test allows the user to read the test instructions along with the judging
criteria; review dressage arena diagrams that animate through the movements
within a test; play and record your own readings of the test that are perfectly
timed for an individual horse and the arena in which you are practicing; reference the official USDF dressage test sheet; review the USDF Pyramid of Training; and keep up-to-date on the latest in dressage competition through the
USDF news feed.
The iPhone application has been developed for USDF Introductory Level Test A,
USDF Introductory Level Test B, and USDF Introductory Level Test C. To download the applications or to see a full listing of EquiTests applications, visit the
iTunes App Store. http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/

Routine Dental Exam and Float

he routine dental exam and float should consist of
three basic parts. These are a thorough history, a
comprehensive float, and evaluation of the float.
Once the horse is sufficiently sedated, the mouth is rinsed
and a full mouth speculum is put in place. A full mouth speculum is an apparatus which holds the mouth open and allows
a clear view of the mouth. This type of speculum is the safest

The goal of the float is to identify and correct any abnormalities in the mouth in a safe and effective manner, while causing minimal stress to the patient. I routinely sedate horses
for all procedures to ensure safety, minimize resistance, and
allow the veterinarian to do a thorough and adequate float.
It is important to asses the function of the horses mouth following a float. Manipulating the jaw tells me if the teeth are
grinding effectively with no resistance. Visually you can tell if
the teeth are in balance and if reductions were sufficient. I
consider pain or difficulty eating after the routine float to be
abnormal. The vast majority of my patients will go back to
eating as soon as they wake up from sedation.

New York Finals Fun
By: Jennifer Ball
HITS on the Hudson might never be the same after a group of
travelers from Ohio decided this year to buck convention and
attend the Region 8 Championship show in Saugerties, New
York. Region 8 competitors welcomed Ohioans with kindness
and hospitality, as the 600+ stall facility housed the Fall
Festival of Dressage and a hunter show (Marshall Sterling
Hunter Jumper Finals) during the September 14-19, 2010
week. Horses of all sizes, shapes, and colors rambled to and
fro throughout the expansive show grounds. Peppered along
all major thoroughfares, vendors sold clothing, tack, food,
and anything else shoppers might browse. Horses learned to
ignore golf carts, scooters, and bicycles as people surged
around on very important business! By the end of the week,
crossing the wooded bridge along the shaded trail leading
from the stabling to warm up and show rings proved to be as
calm and confident for the horses as a walk down their own
barn aisle back at home.
The distance from the stabling to the rings and all activities
made competitors appreciate golf carts and other
transportation, but plenty of exercise was part of every day
for riders walking their horses around and heading to food,
view friends in competition, etc. The turn out paddocks
available provided a healthy mental release for horses that
needed to buck and run.
NODA News 2010 page 6
Days began as most horse shows do, with arrival on the
grounds in the dark and crisp cool morning. But quickly,
Saugerties unfolded into the daylight of the Catskill
Mountains and what seemed to be an infinite maze of horses
and riders all headed somewhere and ready with a smile.
Beautiful little girls with braids and ribbons were pitched onto
adorable ponies ready to canter over fences, elegant warmbloods in their double bridles with quiet riders in white
breeches, brown saddles, black saddles, braids, clips, and
shiny spurs—more than the eye could see and more fun than
a person has a right to expect! And the food service was
divine with stir-fry, burgers, sandwiches, salads, breakfast
sandwiches, pasta, and more…delicious!
Following long days of showing and horse care, competitors
enjoyed evenings of great food, singing, jokes, and the
infamous escalator party trick (oh maybe that was just us?!)
The only drawback was the consuming pile of dirty smelly
laundry toted back across the Ohio border. Competitors are
human, and not everything can be perfect, but in spite of the
occasional tear, a flat tire on the way home, and Rhavel
insisting he must travel home sans halter (he took it off
twice!) Region 8 Finals in Saugerties, New York was the most
fun ever! It was the whole snow cone! Thanks and
appreciation to Nancy Lewis Stanton and Bob and Bernie
Lewis who made a bunch of amateurs proud equestrians in
New York!

2010...What a Year!

By: Clara Etzel
In January of 2010, if you would have asked me what the year
had in store for me, I would have rattled off a few goals I wanted
to accomplish such as, continuing to ride and show horses,
continuing my undergraduate degree, and earning my BHS

certification, among other things.
I started off the year at Albion College, finishing up my training
for my BHS exams and ended the year living in Ann Arbor,

Michigan, having established my own business. I could in no way
have predicted what 2010 had in store for me, but it was a

rewarding and exciting year for me as a rider and student. I
wanted to share a few highlights with NODA members about
what happened during my 2010 year.


Passed my BHS
Stage 1, 2, 3 and
Prelim Teaching
Test, thereby
becoming a BHSPT
(British Horse
Society Prelim
Teaching
Candidate). I spent
December 2010 (during winter break) completing
paperwork to become a BHSAI (British Horse Society
Assistant Instructor).
Started my own LLC, named Clara Etzel Dressage, LLC. I
started an LLC to train horses, teach lessons, give clinics,
and sell horses, which is based at Cavallo Equestrian Centre
in Superior Township, MI (near Ann Arbor).
Declared and competed in NAYRC qualifying competitions
for FEI Young Riders- Although circumstances prevented me
from competing in all qualifying competitions and going to
the NAYRC in Lexington, KY, it was a very enjoyable
experience.
Competed my horse, More Coffee Please aka Reggie at
Fourth Level, earning all scores in the 60’s! Quite an
accomplishment for my little Quarter Horse : )
Earned my USDF Bronze and Silver Medals.
Transferred to Central Michigan University to an online
Undergraduate degree, majoring in Administration. All my
courses are online. I love this program. Although it requires
discipline, I now have the flexibility to train, compete, and
travel when I want and
need to.
I can only hope that
2011 is full of such
gratifying experiences
like those that I had in
2010. One exciting event
that I am especially
looking forward to is
brining 2-time member of the Swedish National Dressage Team,
Mette Rosencrantz to Cavallo Equestrian Center for a clinic in
April. I encourage NODA members to ride or audit the clinic, as
this is an exceptional opportunity to work with a top
international competitor. I am sure 2011 will be filled with new
adventures, just as 2010 was and cannot wait for them to
unfold.
Happy New Year!

New Years Resolutions
By: Cassandra Hummert-Johnson
Happy New Years everyone! As is traditional, the new year is
time for resolutions, goals, and to forgive and forget. I am so
excited for this year and the exciting things it will bring! Here
are a few of my big goals for 2011!
1.)Be Healthy! As many know, it’s sometimes difficult to keep
to a diet and exercise regimen. Over the last year I’ve tried
different exercises, workouts, diets, classes and I’m planning
on putting together something that’ll work for me! Pilates and
Yoga are both GREAT for equestrians, especially dressage riders. Pilates works on your core/abdominal muscles. It is in a
workout type style. Classes and videos are awesome. I recommend Pilates for Dressage Riders by Janice Dulak. Yoga is also
really great for riders- it keeps you flexible and loose. I love
going to Yoga classes, but videos are also good, even nonhorsey ones. Also, I’ve gotten into running and kickboxing!
Kickboxing is so much fun, I recommend it to everyone. It’s a
combination of cardio, self-defense, boxing and fun! My hope
is to be able to integrate all of these things throughout the
week to benefit my health and my riding (as well as possibly
eliminating those weekly Starbucks Mochas…. :)
New to the team is Rio, a 4-year-old Lusitano
stallion sponsored to Kate by Fair Weather
Farm. Kate and Rio are a new team but have
already had several scores in the 70's at
Training level and many blue ribbons. We are
looking forward to the future with this
amazing horse.
We were proud to host a clinic with Christoph
Hess this past summer at Fair Weather Farm.
We had a big turnout of auditors and had a
waiting list for rider slots. This clinic was a huge success and
we are looking forward to having Christoph back in April and
November 2011. Fair Weather Farm will also be hosting clinics
with Michael Poulin and Stephan Clarke of Germany. We are
all looking forward to 2011!
3.) Compete at the NAJYRC! Rampal is happily munching grass
down in Tennessee after 25 years of successful competition,
and Archie has moved on to a family that absolutely adores
him. However, I look forward to 2011 with a new partner!
Tizayo (Ozzy) is a 10 year old KWPN gelding. We bought him
from South Carolina in September, 2010. He is such a sweetheart and is learning new things every day. Right now we are
looking forward to competing in the spring!
4.) Get my PADI Advanced Diver Certification! Last summer I
did a marine biology project in the Yasawa Islands of Fiji. I had
so much fun diving in the South Pacific. My dad and I are
planning to take a trip to the Caymens to do my advanced
diver. I LOVE photography, and when becoming and Advanced
Open Water Diver you get to explore areas of Scuba, such as
underwater photography. I can’t wait!
5.) Stay Thankful. Every day I try to remember and
acknowledge how blessed and lucky I am. As a young rider,
I’ve been blessed with 4 awesome horses, great opportunities
and wonderful people. As a student I go to a great school and
will move on to the University of Kentucky where I will continue to study and train. And personally, I am thankful for my
health, my happiness, my fabulous parents and my friends.
2.) Write more! With my school schedule and riding and being I’ve certainly had a beyond-awesome “childhood” (sheesh
pretty busy I stopped writing monthly articles for NODA! I will that’s a scary thought, as I turn 18 next year. I’ll always be a
little kid though :). So thank you to everyone that’s done that
definitely start back up again, and have a bunch of ideas for
for me, and I can only hope to continue to realize that every

What Horses Have Done for Me
By: Kimber Mackenzie
heading for a 2’9” fence in our fourth jumping class when we
crashed into the fence. My poor horse sent me sailing
through the air, hitting the ground hard enough to separate
my shoulder, break ribs, rupture a lung, and bruise my
kidneys. At the hospital they found that I had kidney cancer. I
was able to be cured with surgery. Now I look at my horse
and see my guardian angel. After another less traumatic fall, I
admitted that the demands at work and at home did not
permit me to ride enough for the strength to jump safely.
I’m sure my story would not interest “The Today Show”
audience, but maybe those of you in NODA will find it
entertaining. My name is Kimber Mackenzie. I started riding
when I was 8 years old on school horses. My mom finally
broke down and bought me my own horse at age 13, a grade
mare with no special breeding, the most beautiful horse I had
ever seen. We jumped, went trail riding, and started in

In 2006, at a hunter show, we were doing a roll back and

Riding has recently given me good health and the opportunity

Thanks to all of you that make this happen: To NODA officers,
volunteers, riders, and stables that do all the work to have
these shows. You make some of us feel like little girls (and
boys) again.

Fall Wellness Exam

ongratulations to everyone that won an end of season
Championship ribbon or trophy! It was wonderful to
see everyone dressed up at the NODA banquet.
Now that show season is over for those of us not lucky
enough to be heading to Florida, it is the time for a Fall
Wellness Exam. This is the best time to reflect on the past
season and make plans for the winter training session.
A physical exam should be scheduled to address any health
concerns that have developed over the past year.
Auscultation of the heart, lungs, and GI tract should be
performed. If any pesky lumps have developed, now is the
time for them to be checked and removed.
Vaccinations are essential for the complete health of the
horse. Consult your veterinarian to determine the vaccines
required by each horse on an individual basis.
A fecal egg count should be performed at least 60 days after
the last de-wormer has been administered. The fecal egg
count will determine the need to de-worm, if the current dewormer is effective, and help the veterinarian develop a deworming strategy designed specifically for your horse and
property.
An oral exam should be performed. A good oral exam should
be done under sedation with a bright light and an oral
speculum. The sharp points on the molars can be “floated”
equilibrated if needed and hooks can be reduced.
A CBC profile (complete blood count) and fibrinogen blood
work can be drawn to fully evaluate your horse’s health. The
CBC looks for anemia, infection, inflammation and low
platelets. A profile will evaluate liver enzymes, kidney
function, and overall electrolyte and protein values.
Fibrinogen levels help to assess the overall inflammation
state present within the horse.
Now is the time to look into any subtle lameness or gait
abnormality. Early intervention may correct or cure a
problem. Radiographs, ultrasound and MRI are advanced
diagnostics that can be utilized to pinpoint lameness.
Joint injections, joint supplements and injections of joint
protective substances such as Adequan or Legend may
improve your horse’s comfort and allow him to perform at a
higher level.
Using all the information from the Fall wellness Exam we can
start evaluating a training program to prepare for next
season. Hopefully we will all be recipient of a Championship
ribbon next year!
