the New Downtown - Metro rail lines
Changing
how people
connect with
downtown
The METRO
Main Street
Red Line began
operating in
2004.
This guide will help
you understand where
the new downtown rail
lines can take you, how
to ride the rail and how
to coexist with light rail
when you’re not riding it.
The new downtown rail
lines will add six new
stations running east and
west along Capitol and
Rusk, along with the new
Main Street transfer station.
Today, the Red Line
carries 40,000
passengers a day
between the
Fannin South and
UH-Downtown
stations.
Only Boston’s
light-rail system
serves more
people per
mile (US).
WHERE WE ARE
The existing downtown Red Line connects a
number of popular destinations.

SHARED
LANE
The train system was designed with safety
as a top priority for passengers, pedestrians,
motorists and cyclists. Exercise good
judgment around trains at all times.
RUSK
SHARED
LANE
CENTRAL STATION RUSK
MOTORISTS
Motorists and trains will share eastbound lanes on Rusk and westbound
lanes on Capitol, the only section where this happens.
SHARED LANES
allow trains and
motorists to travel
in the same lane.
PEDESTRIANS AND SKATERS
Use designated crosswalks, obey all traffic signals and follow the
rules of the road.
Stop and look both ways before crossing tracks.
CYCLISTS
Use bike lanes where available, obey traffic signals and follow the
rules of the road.
Be extra cautious when sharing lanes eastbound on Rusk and
westbound on Capitol.
GARAGES
Enter and exit parking garages as you do now. Just be sure to check
for trains as well as cars, motorcycles and bikes.
Trains are quiet
and weigh nearly
50 tons.
STAY ALERT.
Representing
communities through
Arts in Transit
To celebrate the cultural and artistic diversity of the
vibrant communities along the rail lines, METRO created
Arts in Transit. This project enlists the talents of 22 local
artists, community residents and art experts who are
transforming individual stations from bland, generic
necessities into engaging artistic showcases. The stations
will offer a proud and meaningful reflection of downtown
and the diverse neighborhoods the lines serve.
After a rigorous selection process that included METRO
staff, art specialists and members of the community, the
following artists and projects have been selected
to enhance stations along the downtown lines.

Central Station Rusk, Central Station Capitol, Theater District Station
Boarding platforms on Rusk and Capitol are different than others you
might be familiar with. They’re elevated, but they’re curbside instead
of in the middle of the street. Curb and pedestrian ramps and comprehensive
signage at every stop make the platforms fully accessible to seniors and
people with disabilities.
You can bring your bike on the train. See ridemetro.org for rules
and regulations.
You can transfer between rail lines at two stations.
CENTRAL STATION:
You can transfer between the Red Line, the Green Line and the Purple Line.
EADO/STADIUM STATION:
You can transfer between the Green Line and the Purple Line.
IMPORTANT THINGS
TO KNOW ABOUT
LIGHT RAIL
You can still make left and right turns like you do now. Just remember that
there may be a train sharing the lane with you.
Light rail helps ease traffic congestion, reduce greenhouse emissions
and improve our air quality.
We welcome your feedback and encourage you to contact Linda Trevino,
Senior Stakeholder Affairs Representative, at 713-739-6009, or submit
comments to gometrorail.org/go/inquiry/2491/.
